It's canon that the reason dazai survived many of his attempt was because Mori was keeping him alive which sounds like a full-time job

Fr, Dazai, especially PM!Dazai is one sadistic mf and he's sick. Also, I agree with you, simply because it's something that I could actually see him doing, ya know? Like, we all know Dazai is a man that is fascinated by humans and their... humanity and just how they work, so I wouldn't put it past PM!Dazai too find intrigue in just the thought of how you'd react. Could you still cum as he holds a gun to your head? Would you still tell him you love him as your eyes fill with fear? Well, he doesn't doubt that you would.. but would you mean it? Those three words.. would they be true as they leave your lips? He doesn't know so he wants too find out. You'd be something akin to a guinea pig for his fucked up experiments. Something I also love about this is that it's easy too write PM!Dazai as this fucked up person because again, it's true. In canon he's tortured people and I personally hc Dazai as someone who thrives in psychological games, as we've seen with him and Fyodor, Dazai actually likes the cat and mouse between him and Fyodor, he thrives in it because it's mentally stimulating. Now, I don't know if this is canon or not, but I feel like Dazai is someone who easily gets bored, so he constantly has too find the next thing too gain his interest, it's a cycle for him if you will.

Okay, Dazai's bandages. Yes, I have seen headcanons or theories, whatever you want to call it. Some say it's to cover the scars from his suicide attempts or scars from self harm. Others say it's because of his ability. Others think he's transgender or non-binary. All that are valid points but I have a specific way I wanna talk about this. The bandage on the eye. That's my focus and what drives me crazy.

From the very moment we see Dazai in the past, we see he has his eye covered. With that, his depth perception is gone. So, why? Why does he cover his eye and takes away an advantage? Of course, the longer he has it the more used to it he is but why did he do it in the first place?

He has them uncovered. Yes, Oda took the bandage off and Dazai kept it as such and it's probably because Oda did that he kept it but bear with me.

Beast!Dazai covers the other eye. Now, if you have read the BEAST light novel, you know that this Dazai is aware that he's living in a book and has gone through many realities in said book and as such choose to cover his other eye. Why? Was it because it's an alternate universe? But, if he has gone through many, why is BEAST the one he changes the bandage's position? Or has he changed it before BEAST? Still, why?
And the last one, which isn't about the eye being covered BUT the hairstyle. Stupid. Dumb. Bear with me here.

Joining the bad guys in the movie, he changes his hairstyle. Why? Ofc, he looks amazing dear God but he didn't have to change his hairstyle.
So, what all this makes me conclude, except of giving me a headache, Dazai changing the bandage, not having it or changing his hairstyle has to do with morals. In Bungou Stray Dogs, everyone has questionable morals, all characters fall into this grey area, some having "good" and others "evil" tendencies. Dazai is just simply, morally grey. He's not good, he's not bad, he's just there, he doesn't care what side he is in, good or bad. Yet, he goes through these changes, why? I truly think it has something to do with his morals.
Mafia days and BEAST have the eyes covered because he doesn't have "good" morals. He does bad things and mentally gets worse. It's kind of like he feels he doesn't deserve to see the world in full if he does bad things to it, also blocking him out from seeing the good in it. But, I cannot explain the whole, changing the eye which gets covered at different realities.
His eyes being uncovered in the ADA, although I do believe it has to do with Oda, it's also because he acts with "good" morals. He is a "good" guy. Saving and helping people and so if in the Mafia days he felt he didn't deserve to see the world then by doing good, he allows himself to see the full world and also it's good side.
And Dead Apple... that hairstyle will not be brought back so I don’t have to analyze it and it's probably one of the things that will never get answered BUT his eyes aren't covered, meaning if we take what I said, he allows himself to see the good in the world even though he's in the "bad group". His bangs being pushed to the side feels like he's saying something I can't pin-point. Is it because his morals are being questioned? Like how he can so easily get to the bad side but also be with the good guys? I don't know.

✧ dont know if this counts as anything but: odasaku wasnt dazais father figure—and as much as i hate to say this: mori was.
the toxicity of dazai? his never ending list of red flags??? the root of it all is mori, because he ‘raised’ dazai; not odasaku. mori took dazai under his wing and influenced him—shaped him into who he is.
all in hopes of dazai becoming a spectacular, one of a kind mafia member, if not the next boss; mori himself speculated that he wouldnt be shocked if dazai were to assassinate him and take his place as the next port mafia boss back in dark era.
…(at age 23 to be precise—dazai is 22 in the canon and current timeline—dazai rejoins pm agenda WILL become reality)
even in 15, when dazai asked mori “who do i remind you of?” (correct me if i quoted it wrong my memory is shittier than a gold fish with dementia)
mori responds with “myself”.
odasaku couldve been the healthy father figure, but that doesnt mean that he actually was. (even though that i desperately wanted him to be…)
so, if dazai was found by odasaku and not mori, then yeah, our sonny boy wouldnt have turned out to be so fucked up. but unfortunately, that isnt the case…
though shoutout to beast for feeding into my delusions! because if there are multiple universes with multiple different outcomes, that means that at least in one of them, odasaku found dazai before mori did!!!
no worries guys!!! dazai is taken good care of in at least one universe out there!!! (head in hands, shinji sitting pose…)
and to end this debate with a lil something, mori and dazais dynamic reminds me of the saying:
“The abused becomes the abuser”.
