I would like your opinion on a post I saw on tumblr, this post is defending Jiraiya as a good teacher: https://odditiesinnaruto.tumblr.com/post/649929660408512512/jiraiya-was-a-terrible-teacher-to-naruto-because
This is kinda a long and messy response, but I hope you get what I’m trying to say lol. Thanks for asking!
In general, I find it weird when people blame the children in situations where adults had responsibility.
This is a problem that I have with a lot of people in the Naruto fandom because I just feel like they don’t understand that when something is wrong with a child, it’s almost always the fault of an adult.
Like??? They need to go watch Spirited Away so they can see Hayao Miyazaki poetically explain the way adults neglect and ignore children.
A good teacher doesn’t have a 'teaching style.' A good teacher adapts to their students learning style. Most teachers don’t do this and that’s why we all hated almost all of our teachers growing up.
Is Naruto the sharpest knife in the drawer? No. Is he my favorite character? Definitely not. Do I have problems with his character? Absolutely. BUT it is not an exaggeration to say that every single notable adult in his life failed him EXCEPT Iruka (KING).
The Third Hokage? Pretty much abandoned him.
Kakashi? Allowed his trauma to affect his ability to teach and only valued Naruto because he was Minato’s son.
And Jiraiya. God do I hate him.
Jiraiya failed Naruto a lot. For conciseness I’ll just sum it up using bullet points.
He didn’t come back to Konoha to raise Naruto when he found out about MinaKushi’s death. He was Naruto’s godfather, which was the closest thing Naruto had to family. Not to mention Minato gave him the key to Naruto’s seal for a reason. Some might say, “The Third Hokage wouldn’t have let him.” But Jiraiya was a Sannin and a Sage. He could’ve just said tough and taken Naruto anyway but he didn’t. I don’t like the way this post acts like Naruto got some huge privilege in getting Jiraiya for a mentor. Jiraiya should have always taken care of Naruto.
When Jiraiya teaches Naruto the Rasengan, he just kind of dumps him in the forest for like 6 weeks until he teaches himself. He also constantly compares Naruto to Minato. And imagine how much quicker Naruto would have learned (and they would have found Tsunade) if Jiraiya hadn’t spent most of the trip hanging out in brothels.
Then (unrelated to training) Jiraiya, who should know how much Naruto needs a positive parental figure in his life, constantly abandons Naruto so that he can write porn. When you decide to take on the responsibility of a child, it is now your responsibility to take care of that child. It doesn’t matter how ‘inconvenient’ it is for you.
After almost three years away, Naruto has learned basically nothing. He’s improved on techniques that he taught himself but that’s about it. When you compare that to Sakura and Sasuke’s improvement during the time skip, it doesn’t look great.
Both the toads and Killer B teach Naruto more than Jiraiya ever taught him. So Naruto isn’t an unteachable idiot. His problem is that no one ever had the patience to actually sit down and teach him.
Now this post brings up the fact that the Ame Orphans learned a lot from Jiraiya. I would argue that this was due to it being necessary for their survival. And let’s not forget that after three years, Jiraiya abandoned them to fend for themselves in the middle of a war torn country. And also not forget, that both Nagato and Konan resented Jiraiya for doing that. Ultimately, Jiraiya’s neglect of his students cost him his life, so yeah I do think he earned a death like the one he got.
Not to get all serious on everybody’s asses, but I tend to be overly observant of the way adults treat children (even in fiction and fandom culture) because I plan on adopting teenagers eventually. When you want to adopt kids you have to understand that most of their behavior and mindset come from the adults around them. So patience is incredibly important when dealing with them. You have to be careful how you treat a neglected child because you could trigger them or further their trauma.
It is a responsibility to be put in charge of a child not a privilege bestowed upon that child.
There’s this horrible part of our culture (that is definitely the reason we’re all so fucked up btw) that believes that children are responsible for everything. HOLD ADULTS ACCOUNTABLE PEOPLE.
Kids are kids. They actually don’t think the same way that adults do because their brains aren’t finished developing. No amount of stupidity or bad behavior will make a child deserve abuse or neglect from the adults responsible for them.
yearning for an “i want to stay up just to talk to you” kind of love
