When news broke that you were dating Ari your friends nearly didn’t believe it.

Shrugging it off as another unbelievable rumor this stagnant old town came up with in hopes of spicing up their painfully monotone lives.

Ari was Ari. He was a no-nonsense, gruff, only speaks when spoken to, a painfully unfriendly, mysterious man who arrived in town a year ago to live out his years on his plot of land in the mountains. (Or so they say.)

And you were … you.

A sweet little thing who would be hated by the town's wives if you weren’t too innocent and vapid for your own good – always willing to lend out a hand whenever they were starting to get overwhelmed from the children and housework every time their husbands leave home. 

The very image of you in short summer dresses and glittery lipgloss smacked on pouty lips that are somehow constantly sucking on candies holding hands with rough palms covered with dust and grease is connected to a man nearly twice your age and height with a face stuck on a permanently bored glare was too comical to even think about.

And yet, one perfectly normal Spring morning, birds crashed on windows, bunnies tripped over their own legs, and hearts of bachelors all over town broke when you were found prancing on the farmer’s market with the grumpy giant in tow – who now apparently has learned to speak:

“Yes, sweetheart,” he nodded at the large bottle of strawberry jam you were shoving on his face. “Whatever you want.”

You shrieked in glee, jumping into his arms to give him a wet kiss that had any man within the viewing radius blush or get slapped by their wives. It wasn't helped that Ari wasn’t one for decorum and gripped your ass into his hands, pulling you closer into his body and nearly flashing the entire town when your summer dress bunched up.

“This is going to be sooo good! I can make you that cute crêpe I always make the kids at their tea parties. It has strawberries and extra cream and I add just a pinch of cinnamon and sugar to make that –”

And the weirdest sight of them all on that extremely uncanny morning was … the older man smiled – was smiling, as he let himself be dragged by you from one end of the market to the other while you threw whatever you had fancied into his face. And when that had finished he walked out of there, as quietly as he usually does, with one of his hands full with paper baskets and the other holding a sleepy little darling that kept muttering on about picnics under the willow tree and sweet strawberry shortcakes.

Ari was suddenly taking a lot of trips down the mountain. Usually, he would drive down once every two weeks to replenish his groceries and to buy materials for whatever project he was working on in his house in the next town over but now he was somehow everywhere every day.

He was in the cafe, painfully large and out of place in the small space, buying different slices of all the cake baked that morning together with a cup of black coffee (no sugar or nothin’) and strawberry blended frappe with whipped cream and extra sliced strawberries to go. Someone saw him in the finals of the small league baseball tournament leaning on a tree, his eyes never wavering from your figure as you ran up and down the bench to give assistance to the kids (the crowd was sure the sun wasn't the only one to blame for the opposing coach, who was usually a lecherous jerk, to be sweating bullets). 

“Sweetheart.”

Everyone could feel the crowd straighten up when he finally spoke, calling out for you in an uncharacteristically sweet endearment. However, you seemed to have not noticed everyone’s eyes on you as you turned to him with a smile.

“Com’ere, you’ve been under the sun too long.”

You turned to the rowdy kid behind you and their exasperated mothers. “J-Just, a second, da – Ari!”

However, the man just cocked his head to his car parked by the shade before it had you wincing, quickly running to him with a kiss and a small pout of sorry. He gladly accepted the kiss before leading you into the truck and driving off with no more than a glance at the clearly gawking crowd. 

On a rare occurrence, someone even caught him in the bar surrounded by a group of people, only he had his head buried on your neck blocking everyone out as you sat gleefully on his lap, giggling at every word whispered on your skin.

“How’d that happen?” Dexter, the son of the town’s mechanic snickered bitterly into his bottle, pushing his head up to empty it. His eyes throwing glares at you nestled perfectly on your lover’s lap, lost in your own bubble only he had access to.

“Beats me,” his friend shrugged, following his lead and raising his arm to order another pair of cold ones for his frustrated companion. It was clear Dexter had been aiming for you for a while now but his advances always flew over your head. So he was understandably upset when he had finally heard of you getting snatched up by an older man that lives over at the fucking mountains when Dexter had the homecourt advantage of living close to you and was one of the most eligible bachelors of the town who had the leading shot of getting to wife you up.

But the old fuck had to ruin it all.

“I bet he snatched her up on her lil’ walks and fucked whatever was left in her brain,” he muttered bitterly, ignoring his friend’s slap on his arms at the harsh jab at your … simplistic tendencies. “If there had been any in there, to begin with.”

He knew he was talking out of bitterness but his resentment and the alcohol let his mouth get a little too loose.

“DEX –”

“Whiskey straight and a strawberry cocktail.”

A gravely deep voice cut through the noise of the bar. When he whipped his head behind him what greeted him was you all alone in your seat staringly deliriously at the man right behind him, ignorant of the murderous haze in his eyes.

“Levinson, I’m so sorry about this, man. He’s drun –”

Ari cut his friend off with a look. Dexter could almost see his imaginary tail tucked behind him. He tried to steel himself and puff his chest out but every nerve in his body begged him to cower. The large shadow of the man falling on his body had him audibly gulping. Maybe it was the alcohol or maybe the primal fear of running from predators but he could feel his limbs shake in desperation.

“You’re right,” he flinched when Ari slammed the two glasses in his hand which was immediately replaced by the bartender with the fresh drinks he ordered. “I did take your girl, didn’t I?”

Dexter saw an uncharacteristic smirk on his face, yet something in it made him shiver – made him realize he was a lot more dangerous than he let everyone else believe. 

“But hey, best man always wins, right?” he smirked, leaning into his space until he had to step back and knocked a glass back, shattering on the floor. His words were harmless and almost friendly but everyone in the vicinity knew he was anything but such. 

“Ari?”

He could vomit, eyes flicking behind the towering man to see you peeking up at what was the commotion about. “Is everything okay?”

You grabbed at his arm, his face quickly doing a 180 as he smiled down at you.

“Hmm,” he kissed the top of your head as you beamed up at the monster mindlessly. “Just had a … talk with your friend.”

“That’s good!” you clapped, innocently gleaming up at your shivering neighbor, completely oblivious to Ari’s terrifying expression behind you. “This one doesn’t really like to go out much. Just wanna lock me in his house, I swear.”

It took everything in Dexter not to imagine just what goes on within the four walls of his home but the smirk the older man sent his way made him sick to his stomach.

“Can you blame me, kid?” Dexter gritted his teeth, watching as Ari wrapped his bulging arm around your waist, his neck getting kissed by you as you turned to hug him back. He was clearly looking down on him but it’s not like he can do anything about it. 

“No,” he gulped, when he realized Ari wanted to play the buddy-buddy act and answer. “I can’t blame you at all.”

“Why don't you go say goodbye to your friends now, sweetheart? I think you’ve had enough tonight,” Ari cooed at you as you struggled to cleanly drink your new pretty glass before whining when he forcibly took the half-empty cup and gave it to the bartender.

“But Ariiiii,” you whined but all that earned was a sharp slap to your ass that rang out and cut through the music of the dingy bar. They would’ve at least tried to defend you if you didn’t gleefully shriek and press your body harder into his, giggling and pressing small kisses and small bites to what part of his neck that you could reach.

“Now, honey,” he commanded, finally bending down slightly to give you the kiss you were so clearly desperate for.

“Okay, okay,” you moaned into his lips before prancing off to say goodbye to your group, Ari’s eyes watching your every move.

Everything happened so fast that it took Dexter a moment to realize Ari had his arms reached out for a handshake. Despite his pride, as a man in tatters, he decided to accept it only to whimper and nearly keel over in pain when Ari had gripped it so hard he felt his fingers crack and pop in protest.

Ari suddenly pulled his hand into him until he was leaning over his ear. “Let me hear you talk about my woman again I’ll rip your fucking jaw open.”

In a snap, he was back to being normal – the same unreadable mask on his face as he let go of Dexter’s ruined hand and patted him on the back. “I’ll see you around.”

(Six Months Ago)

The people in this town may have no idea how the two of you happened but Ari remembers everything – remembers the weather, the smell of the incoming rain in the air, the soft pounding on his door, and the sweetest voice –

“Mr. Levinson, sir?”

He had no choice but to open the door.

He knew these woods. And he knew that the soft voice behind his door would not be able to survive the descent at this time of the day when the sun was just about to go back down and the storm was about to arrive.

And he knew you too – saw you in passing on the rare occurrences he went down the town. You were an attractive girl, someone that will definitely drag any man’s eyes toward her no matter how much they try not to. And believe him, he tried not to.

“Good morning –”

“It’s night.”

He winced at his blunt words. It wasn’t that he was purposefully trying to be rude or that he hated your very presence and how just a few giggles and coo’s from you had him ordering a fucking pastry when he hated sweets but it’s just that … he’s not good with people. The longest people he had been with were people who worked for him, not with him which made it a bit difficult for him to function socially in the normal world.

But you didn’t seem to take offense, confusing him when you turned your head up and then giggled at yourself, “Hehe, good evening, Mr. Levinson, sir!”

Ah, he remembered the whispers about you. You were a bit on the dull side. But you had the pretty face and sweet personality that makes it just endearing.

He sighed, rubbing his face, “Is that –?”

“The choco butternut munchkins you ordered, sir!”

“It’s Ari.”

You had a confused expression written all over your face, “I-It’s …” you looked back down at your basket where the sugary treats were placed, almost as if willing them to give you an answer. “It’s called choco butternut munchkins in the bakery but I guess you can call them Ari too. It’s a cute name!”

Ari opened his mouth to correct your misunderstanding but then he saw the genuine confusion in your face that he couldn't help but burst out in laughter. You joined with a nervous chuckle before you genuinely laughed when you realized he wasn’t making fun of you.

“Here,” he grabbed his wallet from behind his pocket to pick out two hundred dollar bills.

“This is too –”

“For the bother,” he nodded at the small scratches and splotches of dirt in your legs that had you crossing them with one another. He couldn't help but run his eyes up to your painfully short bottoms and a tight sleeveless shirt that just teased the lacy top of your pretty pink bra. “I know it isn’t the easiest trip to take.”

“I-It’s okay,” you smiled bashfully, looking up at him through your lashes. Ari has to remind himself to breathe, his grip on the door frame tightening. “The view is nice.”

Ari knew you genuinely meant that the view from the trek up the hills was nice. And from what he knew about you from the whispers of the town, you weren’t one to be sly about your intentions. Yet he couldn't help but feel a burn on his face. Especially when you looked at him like that.

Suddenly, a flash followed by a loud explosion in the sky had you screaming and clambering up to him. Rain has already fallen, and it seemed it brought nasty weather along it.

When he looked back down at you you were already shaking like a leaf, broken apologies sputtering out of your lips and yet you still clung to him through your teary eyes. You must've been really surprised.

“Hey,” he had no choice but to hook his hand under your chin to make you look up at him. “How bout some coffee while we wait for it to pass?”

You nodded hastily, “Yes! T-Thank you!”

He knew he was making a mistake – that his patience has been spread thin from the few moments he spent with you. It would only be a matter of time before he snapped.

He knew better … and you didn’t.

He should try to last through the night at the very least.

“That’s a pretty sight, ain’t it?”

He lasted less than an hour.

If he was being specific, at exactly 34 minutes since you have been in his home you were now splayed out ass first on the dining table he made himself. I want to see harry resorting to muggle fighting because of fights with dudes and because that's what he grew up with and his first response wouldn't be to whip out his wand. I want to see panic attacks when people raise their voice. I want to see panic attacks in general.

REALISTIC TRAUMA RSSPONSES ARE NEEDED!!

(this is not to say that people don't revert to infantal behaviors in response to trauma. However the degree fanfic authors crank it up to is entirely unrealistic in my opinion. All people with this type of trauma response are valid in my mind ❤️)

Alive Really Isn't Your Color by @meles-merrivale (T, 6k)

A beautifully written, bittersweet take on Harry's life after the war and what it means to fall in love with someone you're supposed to hate and who's supposed to be dead. There's so many stunning, evocative lines from this fic that I could quote, but I'll leave you with this one: "How did Harry ever think Voldemort didn’t understand emotion? The man feels everything, feels it with his whole body, twisting his face and coiling his magic and tearing apart the world with the force of it."

contrapasso by hanamichi (E, 13k)

This was GRIPPING from beginning to end. The author does an incredible job with showcasing Harry's struggling emotional state after the war, and his grief is just so palpable. Harry and Voldemort's dynamic is gorgeous here.

Time loops beloved! This was such a clever take on the classic graveyard encounter, and there's nothing more that I love seeing than Harry losing it with every successive time loop.

A sense of uneasiness pervades this fic — lots of haunting prose and elements of psychological horror — it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. A must-read if you like alternate takes on Harry encountering another one of Tom's horcruxes (in this case, the ring horcrux).

In Your Image by @perhaps-sunlight (T, 11k)

An AU loosely based on the Portrait of Dorian Gray, with Tom as a painter who's found immortality and eternal youth by stealing his victims' souls away and what happens when he sets his eyes on Harry— very suspenseful and gripping throughout, and I love how it cleverly weaves in elements of canon that were very fun to recognize!

knock it off by TheOnceandFutureQueenofTarts (E, 3k)

Harry having a masochistic streak is a characterization that I adore, and this fic does an amazing job delving into this aspect of his psychosexual development that by the time he meets the locket horcrux, it all goes downhill from there. It's also so funny and written in a snappy way, I laughed out loud at the ending.

Love at First Sight by @dividawrites (E, 5k)

One of the funniest things I've ever read in this ship — every single line of Harry's desperate pleading to Voldemort had me howling. And it wouldn't be a Divida fic without super hot smut at the end (featuring! actual! hemipenes!!) The best take on creature inheritance trope I've read.

My Decorated Horcrux by @youknowmevj (E, 4k)

I love Voldemort wins AUs; it's fascinating to explore the dynamic that he'd have with Harry in his new regime, and oh, does this fic deliver! Voldemort adorning Harry and showing him off is always a treat, plus Harry remaining his defiant self — so many fun elements in this PWP.

on the other side by @philolust (E, 3k)

One of the most haunting things I've read this year. Voldemort's POV is surprisingly heartbreaking; actually, the whole fic is heartbreaking. I don't want to give too much away, but this is an EXCELLENT take on the trapped-in-a-room trope.

On the rejection of love by Baryshnikov (T, 2k)

A really interesting exploration of Tom being aroace and what that means in terms of being in a relationship with Harry. I love this author's series on aroace Tom overall; it was hard to pick a favorite!

Snappy banter and really hot smut in this PWP, a perfect generation mashup that showcases a great depiction of how Harry doesn't actually hate Tom as much as he claims 😊

Personal Assistant by @phantomato (E, 10k)

This one is an absolute masterpiece, an incredible study in suspense. It's a really unique take on a universe where Voldemort never comes back after his initial downfall on Oct 31, 1981, and features a very realistic depiction on who Harry grows to be if he didn't have the formative childhood adventures that we saw in the books. There's an incredibly skillfully crafted mystery at the heart of this story, and when it all comes together in the end, I screamed and gasped and immediately reread it looking for clues that Phantomato had layered in all throughout.

Dream sex with Voldemort! The writing is so ethereal and floaty and poetic, packed full of intensely sensual phrases like, "Its shadowy form sinks deeper into Harry's body, soothing him. Harry can feel it everywhere, like ice through his veins, like they’re two halves of the same whole." It's the perfect dream sex sequence fic 💖

Sola Fide by @crowcrowcrowthing (M, 8k)

So very atmospheric and a fascinating depiction of ritual magic and Voldemort as an actual god! AUs are a really great way to explore what makes the core of a character — that even if it's the characters thrust in different circumstances, you can still tell who they are at their core, and this fic does a fantastic job of reimagining Harry and Voldemort meeting under different circumstances.

Something New by @itsevanffs (E, 2k)

A fresh (and super hot!) take on A/B/O dynamics, featuring both Alpha Harry and Alpha Tom, with both of them overriding their natural instincts in different ways in order to be with each other. The control, the restraint, the desperation, the taboo-ness of what they're doing within their society — all amazing elements that have made this into one of my favorite A/B/O dynamics that I've read. Alpha/Alpha is so underrated! (Also, not a tag that can be filtered yet on AO3, for some reason).

This was SO clever and funny, and an amazing play on Harry being MoD. I don't want to give too much away, but let's just say this fic perfectly captures how murder is the ultimate Tomarry love language.

Incredibly beautiful and poetic prose. The mysterious backstory behind the Tomarry established relationship had me on the edge of my seat. This is one I'll reread over and over again for the haunting and atmospheric prose.

The perfect follow-up to 'Either must die' told from Voldemort's POV — surprisingly sweet and, not surprisingly, very sexy. As always, Metalo's fics pack a huge emotional punch; this one accomplishes it in just 1600 words — every single sentence is emotionally significant and not a single word is wasted - a must-read if you've read EMD.

Harry pining for Voldemort after the war. A lovely, haunting, perfect depiction of dream sex, where you've left wondering what is a dream and what is real.

The Ties That Bind by @mosiva (E, 8k)

Mosiva writes an amazing Harry and Tom dynamic, as well as consistently delivers on great smut, and Tom here is a gem. This fic showcases Tom at his manipulative (sexiest) best, and the progression of Harry growing more drawn to Tom feels very natural and unrushed. Also, did I mention how hot the smut is? The author has other chaptered works that are worth checking out as well, if you like this dynamic!

The Train Station at Forever by @vdoshu (T, 1k)

This is one of the most deeply emotional takes I've seen on the endless reincarnation cycles theme (usually due to Harry being MoD and Voldemort being tied to Harry's soul). In just 1000 words, Doshu does an amazing job of capturing the angst and torment of Harry and Tom achieving "immortality" in this manner, and left me in shivers.

We Still Have Time by @duplicitywrites (T, 9k)

This was SO BEAUTIFUL and SO SAD, an incredible depiction of holding onto someone you love even after death, and I can't even think about this fic without wanting to weep. One of the most heartwrenching things I've read in all of fanfic, in all of my years reading fanfic. I very rarely cry reading fics, and god, I cry every time I've reread this fic. This is duplicity angst at its finest.

Wrath of the Lamb by @penmanner (M, 6k)

One of the most unique takes I've seen on Harry time-traveling to Tom's time in the 1940s. Something goes wrong, and Harry has amnesia but still a sense of purpose. The author's writing is gorgeous and poetic and does an amazing job of illustrating how disorienting Harry's experience is. I absolutely LOVE the amnesia trope, and this fic does it amazing justice.

you, me, a room we made by @kkeikatt (E, 9k)
