lord of the rings when the narrative pov switches from Frodo to Sam during the trek to Mordor because Frodo is too weary and grief-stricken to make sense of his own emotions and memories and we need someone else to tell the story for him.... and then lord of the rings when once again it is Sam who finishes writing the book because Frodo, worn out by grief, could not bear to stay in the Shire and left for the Undying Lands....

this is almost certainly a post ive made before but when a character's grief is so strong it fully alters the form of the narrative itself... moby dick being so much longer than strictly necessary because ishmael's grief made him stall for time in the telling of the tragedy... harrow the ninth being in second person because harrow was so grief-stricken that she herself was not capable of making narrative sense of the events of the novel and so someone else had to do it.... do u know what i mean

Every time Sean Astin makes a statement on whether or not Sam and Frodo were indeed gay for each other in lord of the rings he’s always like “well we have to acknowledge that attitudes around sexuality have changed dramatically over the past several decades and since authorial intent is only up to speculation, the story is open to multiple readings, some of which might have different significances for different groups of people also they kiss on the lips because I said so”

*watching Lord of the Rings*

Aragorn: You have my sword

Legolas: And you have my bow

Gimli: And my axe!

My mom, softly and with genuine confusion: How’s he going to carry all of that??

Arafro, For My Beloved @cathymee

cathy's works are always a treat for my heart. they found and make beauty in it; be it dark, humorous, or sweet fluffiness, cathy just nailed them all ✨

they're the ones who have been giving me wonderful pieces of lotr fanfictions, and from there i discovered their blog and youtube channel full of wonderful lord of the rings edits 🌼

still hopelessly crying because of their aragorn and frodo video that they made for me. it's a masterpiece because cathy didn't merely make an edit-they really made a whole story. it's just ethereally beautiful ; ;

lord of the rings fans, please visit and give love to cathy's pages of creations. samfro, arawen, merpip, arafro, farwyn, wonderful tributes to every fellowship member, cracks, cathy do deliver them all!

they have been nothing but wonderful and supportive to me. in this post dedicated to you, my dear cathy, i sincerely hope only the best of everything that would always come to you. we're so, so far away, but the feeling of love is ever present and apparent for me.

I Am Naked In The Dark, Sam, And There Is No Veil Between Me And The Wheel Of Fire. I Begin To See It

“I am naked in the dark, Sam, and there is no veil between me and the wheel of fire. I begin to see it even with my waking eyes, and all else fades.”

His change was like seeing a phoenix rise from the ashes....

A main character realising what they're here for.

But it scarred him in the procedure. It was not supposed to go like that. He was never free, never healed. And he knew it. Others couldn't see it, but maybe in the shores of Valinor there could be a cure.

"Flight to the Ford"

2021

"Flight To The Ford"

At once the white horse sprang away and sped like the wind along the last gap of the Road. At the same moment the black horses leaped down the hill in pursuit and from the Riders came a terrible cry...

-"The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring", by J.R.R. Tolkien

Following up with my countdown of favorite Fellowship of the Ring scenes is the Chase Scene to Rule All Chase Scenes. Seriously, this scene puts all cheesy car chases in generic action movies to shame. It has high stakes, tension, emotion, beautiful scenery and camera work, very epic soundtrack, and just a touch of magic.

Flight to the Ford is such an epic, exhilarating, iconic sequence. Probably my favorite one out of the whole movie (together with another one, which should be fairly obvious). It's the first time that we've seen the Nine assemble all together since they've left Minas Morgul, which just adds to the sense of peril and urgency. I distinctly remember being completely nailed to my seat the first time I watched it, and flinching so hard at the part where one of the Nazgûl reaches out and almost snatches Frodo from Arwen. I remember also feeling disappointed when the Nazgûl where washed away by the flood, because I thought they had been destroyed, and already at my first watch I loved them so much. Fortunately for me there was a lot more Nazgûl to see in the next two films.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think one of the many strokes of genius in these films was to have Arwen do the rescuing. Glorfindel is a popular character, but the truth is that except for this scene his role in Lord of the Rings is fairly inconsequential. It makes sense to introduce Arwen this way. She is Elrond's daughter and Aragorn's betrothed... why shouldn't she go look for them? It also compensates a little for the lack of female representation these stories are known to suffer from.

"Frodo's Decision"

2021

"Frodo's Decision"

A great dread fell on him, as if he was awaiting the pronouncement of some doom that he had long foreseen and vainly hoped might after all never be spoken.

-"The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring", by J.R.R. Tolkien

An underrated moment of great courage: Frodo, who up to this point thought that the worst had passed, that he had done his bit, that he'd return home soon, and after already having felt a taste of the burden of the Ring and been pursued (and wounded) by the servants of Sauron, volunteers to take the Ring to Mordor.

"The Breaking of the Fellowship"

2021

"The Breaking Of The Fellowship"

"My heart speaks clearly at last: the fate of the Bearer is in my hands no longer. The Company has played its part."

-"The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers", by J.R.R. Tolkien

Another underrated moment of great courage, from both parts: Frodo decides that to fulfill the Quest, and to protect the Fellowship from the destructive influence of the Ring, he must head out alone to Mordor; and Aragorn understands that the best way to protect Frodo now is to let him go. It's a moment that isn't in the books, but that adds a lot to the story and the characters, a placing of trust and faith in each other.
