Graduate - Tumblr Posts
So in my time zone it's almost 3:00 a.m.
Which means I graduate today.
In less than 24 hours.
And it's such an insane feeling for a multitude of reasons. One of course being that in the fall I'll start college.
But there's also this realization that I'm not a kid anymore. I've been 18 since October, so I've been legally an adult for months, but it's really hitting me that I'll never really be seen as a "kid" again. And I've felt like an adult for years, so this shouldn't be so bittersweet, but it is.
I'm also leaving my best friends of 4 years. The closest I'll be to them is 3 hours away. Furthest I'll be is like 11. These people that I've spent nearly every day with for the last four years will be hours away at minimum.
Finally, I'm graduating cordless. Which I know is not a big deal, honestly, but I'm a bit sad about it, only because no one can see how truly hard I've worked to get to graduate. At 16 I didn't even know if I'd move up a grade, much less actually finish school. I'm proud of her for getting here, but I wish she had more to show for it.
It's so crazy to be both wildly exited for the future and what it brings for me and my people, but I'm also terrified. I'm safe the way I am. I have a life and a routine I'm comfortable with and this just pushes me away from it.
I know people see this as a start to the rest of my life, but right now it just feels like the end of the one I've been living.
I'm so exited, and so so scared.
I don't normally post things like this, but I've been thinking a ton about it.

If you're wondering why I've been posting about butterflies recently, it is not only that it is butterfly season where I live; it is graduation season as well.
I have been attending quite a few graduations recently and certainly have attended many many more in the past, including my own. The two seasons complement each other quite well, even if I shed a tear or two at each and every *ceremony.
A child, like the caterpillar, must grow where it is planted, its survival dependent upon the environment around it, whether that is parsley, milkweed, or the adults who provide care (or not!) and all the other elements that encourage a life to be lived. One can relocate caterpillars or small humans but the need for nourishment in all its forms is still there if the wee creature is to survive.
So we come to the bursting open of the chrysalis and behold the graduates in their multi-colored regalia as we watch them take flight. They are no longer bound by that one plant (we hope) but we also hope they never forget the sustenance that was provided throughout the days, weeks, and years. For caterpillars that have turned into butterflies, it is in the DNA to seek out the plant specific to their species, but for humans it is so so much more. Relationships, environments, cultures--whether positive or negative--shape the graduates just as much as they shape them in turn. They can choose to learn from either and with that choice can continue to grow and foster the new and strengthen the old. Wherever they go. And according to the Dr. Seuss book that is a popular graduation gift--they'll go many many places taking their unique gifts, quirks, and hopefully love with them.
If there is one sentence I would put in each and every graduation speech, it would be:
follow the butterflies.
*Hell, I cried at ret Commander William McRaven's commencement speech at the University of Texas-Austin in 2014 and I only watched it on YouTube.
**Once a year around graduation season, I used to tuck a note in a box that remembered things we had learned throughout the year and possibilities for the future. One could do it more often, but let's be real here with parenting, K? When one becomes a parent, the yearly note of lessons learned/future plans just hit different. It makes an 18 (or more or less, life happens) map of the past, present, and best wishes for the future....

We just had our graduation dance and got our diplomas yesterday, Vixxie had a final grade (from 7th grade to 9th) of 9.7 and i (Lemon) had one of 9.6!
I also ran into a glass door as i was leaving the graduation, what a great way to end my time at my school.
On a day like today, July 5, 2021, I, Mike Rodríguez, officially graduated from high school, ✨👨🎓✨🎉🎉🎉👏👏👏 and I want to thank all my family and friends for supporting me in my studies, I'm really very proud of me same for graduating from high school ☺️🎓👍
