Leaving Again

- Shoyo Hinata x gender neutral!reader

- Warnings: angst

- Summary: Hinata says a tear filled goodbye to you at the airport

———————

He was holding on to you so tightly, as if this was the last time he’d ever get to feel you against his chest. He tried to hide his tears in your hair, covering the top of your head in rushed kisses as the final call for his flight rung out through the airport.

“I love you y/n, and it’s only a few months.” You nodded, knowing nothing you could say would make this moment any less painful.

“It’s only a few months in Brazil. Only a little while apart. We’ll be okay.” He chanted into your hair, laying kiss after kiss down. He was trying to calm himself down, convince himself that you wouldn’t get bored of waiting and leave him. He was so scared of losing you.

“Final call. Will Mr Hinata Shoyo please come to gate 14. That’s Mr Hinata Shoyo to gate 14.” He tensed up around you, pulling you closer and laying a kiss on your head one last time. He usually littered your face and neck with kisses, but they were happy and full of love, these were rushed, trembling, and full of sorrow.

“I promise you I’ll be back soon. I’m sorry I have to go.” You smiled as he pulled away, both of your faces covered in tears.

“Don’t be sorry, one day you’ll come home to me for good and we can have a proper family. Little red headed kids screaming our home down, me and you outnumbered in the middle.” You laid a soft kiss on his nose and some smaller ones on his cheeks.

“I really have to go now baby.” You stood back, holding onto your car keys for dear life. This never got easier.

“I love you y/n.”

“I love you too Sho. Come home safely.”

———————

The little angel inside of you kicked and wiggled almost every minute now. You could barely get any sleep; your eating schedule was totally out of whack and you didn’t even know feet could swell up that big. Your chest was heavy and sore, your back felt as if you laid in a bed of nails every night and your head was almost always pounding. You were now seven months pregnant, sore and achy everywhere but glowing according to your mother. But you were doing it all for your little boy. Your tiny Tetsu.

You were still thinking of a way to break it to him, to let him know that while he’s been helping the boys train for their national games for the past five months, you’ve been growing and carrying his first child. Your first child. It was scary, you were terrified every day, but you knew he had to focus, and this was something you could take care of yourself. He was due home any day now anyway, so he’d still get to see how swollen and cranky you’d become, he’d still get the excitement and the awe you got every day when you realised you were closer to holding your little bundle of joy in your arms. You wanted to kiss him already, to look into his eyes and swear to protect him. You knew his dad would always be there for him, you always said Tetsu would make the most doting father. Your little boy wasn’t planned though which is why you were so scared. You hadn’t really spoken seriously about children but he knew it was something you wouldn’t budge on and whenever you two did joke about the subject he seemed deep down to like the idea of having little mini-me’s running around the place.

Your phone went off beside you on the sofa and you smiled softly when you saw it was Shoyo. You two had dated all throughout high school and through part of your college career. You only split up when Shoyo decided that he would never want a family, the one thing you wanted more than anything in the world. He didn’t want to be the reason you were miserable for the rest of your life, so he let you go. Sure it hurt more than anything you’d ever felt before, but it allowed you to stretch your wings and meet the true love of your life. Remaining friends with Shoyo after your breakup allowed you to mingle with more of his friends outside of Karasuno, and that’s what led you to Tetsu. He always knew about your past with Shoyo and never held it against you. He got jealous occasionally, but you reassured him that you wanted him and no one else. It was true, you only had eyes for Tetsu, even if you did occasionally daydream about what a life with Shoyo would be like, but he was happily dating Kageyama now and even you had to admit they were the perfect couple.

Shoyo: Hey y/n! How’s the baby?

y/n: He’s not stopped moving all day, he’s gonna be such a little ball of energy!

You hadn’t intended to tell anyone about your pregnancy apart from your parents and older brother, but you had accidently sent your twelve-week ultrasound photo to Shoyo and captioned it “my baby BOY!” intending it to be a gender reveal for your mum. But when you grabbed your phone to see her reply, you saw a selfie of Shoyo smiling and giving you a thumbs up. You begged him not to say anything and to definitely not tell Tetsu and he agreed, understanding that you never intended on telling him in the first place. He wasn’t upset by it, in fact he was thrilled for you.

Shoyo: I’m so happy for you y/n, I know you’ve wanted a family since you could walk. I’m glad it all worked out for you in the end x

He was so sweet about this, always there to talk to if you were having a particularly rough day and he always sent you random sweet messages encouraging you or filling you in on Tetsu’s day. He recalled this particularly embarrassing time when Tetsu joined them for practice and got a bloody nose after teasing Bokuto and saying his spikes had weakened in his old age… Oh how he regretted that when Bokuto aimed a spike directly for him at full pelt. Shoyo was such a good friend to you, and that’s all you needed him to be.

But Tetsu had noticed the stolen glances from Hinata to his phone all practice today, and how his eyes lit up when texting whoever he was texting. He was curious so sauntered over.

“Hey Hinata, you texting Kageyama?” The ginger shook his head and stuck out his tongue as if lost in thought. He glanced over the ginger’s shoulder and saw your name at the top of the conversation. This caught Tetsu off guard, he didn’t feel totally comfortable with your ex smiling like an idiot while you two texted.

“You’re texting y/n?” Hinata nodded, angling the phone away slightly so Tetsu couldn’t see the messages.

“Just planning a get together for when me and Tobio are back in Japan!” He smiled brightly at Tetsu and, as much as Tetsu hated to admit it, he was scared this energetic, funny, loud, and annoying ginger man could steal you away from him.

You were sitting at home folding some new baby clothes you’d brought into neat piles when you heard your phone buzz.

Shoyo: Hey

y/n: Hey Sho! You texted at just the right time, I needed a rant haha

Shoyo: Why?

Y/n: coz this baby is kicking me right in the ribs! At least we know he’ll have his father’s jumping down to a t haha

Shoyo: yeah, takes after his dad doesn’t he?

Y/n: oh totally, but I could handle you and the boys during school and college and when we meet up now, so it’ll get through it! it’s gonna be a challenge though don’t get me wrong, a little ball of energy running around the house to keep track of

Shoyo: but I’ll be there for you princess

Y/n: Princess? You haven’t called me that in years, you okay over there? Heat getting to your head?

Shoyo: yh I’m good

You didn’t reply, worried Shoyo was acting a little funny. He hadn’t called you Princess since you two broke up in college, what was he thinking? You put it to the back of your mind. It didn’t matter now, and if he did try to make a move, you’d remind him that you love Tetsu and this baby, and you’re not fucking that up for anything.

Tetsu hadn’t replied to any of your calls lately, rather shooting you apologetic texts saying he was busy with promotional interviews and training camp, and the time difference didn’t help either of you. You were worried he was getting bored of you, or finding your calls annoying so you always ended up apologising right back at him. That’s basically all your conversations were now, him apologising for being busy and you apologising for being annoying. You smiled to yourself as you scrolled through the national volleyball team’s Instagram, seeing Tetsu grinning widely with all the boys and feeling a sense of pride swell within your chest. You wished you could kiss that dopey smile of his, run your hands through his hair and just be together. The distance was getting to be too much, but you only had to hold on for a few more days, he would be coming home any day now. You stretched across your double bed, feeling your way down his side of your bed, holding his pillow close to your chest with your other hand. It still smelt of him somehow, the scent still there after five months away. Your boy wriggled around, feeling the kick to your bladder sending you running to the bathroom before you had an accident and had to change the sheets… again. This whole pregnancy thing was hard.

You were terrified. Your eyes wide and mouth agape. You hoped he hadn’t read the newspapers. It was all over the front pages –

High school Volleyball Star turned National Volleyball Promoter expecting First Child with Girlfriend

 - this was the worst way for him to find out. You begged whatever higher power there was to stop him from seeing this before you got to tell him, he had caught his flight before you saw the headlines yourself and you hadn’t been able to contact him since. He should be landing soon, then I can call him. I can still be the first to tell him. You repeated to yourself, not sure if you actually believed in it. You were panicking, the doctor said you needed to take everything easy, that stressing yourself out would stress the baby and neither of you wanted that. You just had to make it until Tetsu got home, then you could welcome him with a smile and a kiss, finally getting the missing piece of your family back.

You froze, the heaviness of the steps outside your front door echoing into your home. Tetsu was back. Your skin burned and cheeks flushed, your stomach turning and doing flips hearing his footsteps approach your front door, hearing him miss the keyhole the first few times before shakily unlocking the door into your home. You stood before him, a beaming smile etched across your face and a handmade sign that read “welcome home daddy!” But the sight that welcomed you made your lips falter and give way. Tetsu was crying.

“H-how could you keep this from me?” He hiccupped, and that’s when you noticed the newspaper in his hand. You scrambled towards him, trying to pull him close to you but he just stepped backwards, unsure of your intentions.

“Tetsu-“ he cut you off with another loud sob, shutting the door behind him and crumbling to the floor. You tried your best to hold him, but he shoved you away, curling into a small ball on the floor in front of you.

“But you told him.” His voice was dripping with a mix of distain and anguish. He was hurting so badly.

“What are you talking about-“

“Hinata! You told him but left me in the dark this whole time!” His voice broke and more tears fell from his face. He was shaking and shivering, his air damp on his forehead from the rain outside.

“Is…” His voice trailed off, eyes lifting from the floor to meet yours.

“Is it Hinata’s baby?”

You recoiled at this, grabbing the side table next to you for stability. He thought it wasn’t his baby.

“I –“ He paused, a shaky breath leaving his body. “-I saw the messages. He was smiling like an idiot, blushing like he used to do when you were dating. He was so happy, talking about your baby… How could you do this to us?” You stared into his eyes, seeing nothing but pain looking back. His calm demeanor thrown out in favour of this crumpled mess upon the hallway floor.

“Is... is the baby not mine?” He looked up at you and in that moment, you knew what pure heartbreak felt like. His hazel eyes shaking and fat tears rolling freely down his face. He clutched the newspaper so tightly to his chest, his balled-up fist shaking ever so slightly. You had never seen him so broken before.

“Of course he’s yours Tetsu!”

“Then why tell Hinata before me? Am I not good enough? Did you just want to hurt me?” You were taken aback by his shouting, him suddenly raising to his full height and pushing past you into the house. You followed aimlessly, arms limp by your side and eyes wild with worry. You scanned the living room, seeing him reaching into the alcohol cabinet to grab a bottle of whiskey. He unscrewed the lid, watching you intensely, before taking a massive gulp of the brown liquid.

“Do you even love me?” His voice was harsher now as he took another swig.

“Of course I do Tetsu.”

“Then why? I can’t think of any other reason not to tell me you were pregnant unless it wasn’t mine. I bet it’s not, is it? I know you’ve been shagging Hinata behind my back you fucking whore!” He screeched smashing the bottle onto the floor sending glass flying everywhere.

“You fucking whore! I bet every time I went to work you had some cunt fucking you in our bed didn’t you!” He was manic now, his arms flailing wildly and pacing across the living room.

“Tetsuro, stop this, you know I haven’t-“

“Do I? Do I really?” He screamed, stopping his pacing, and looking at you. His eyes were wide and wild, his breath heavy and face red with rage.

“Because it sure seems like you enjoy keeping secrets from me. But Hinata? Oooh no, you just love telling him all about your life, don’t you? And what have we been talking about lately, hm? You accusing me of ignoring you! How fucking pathetic.” He spat the words out at you, you flinching under his gaze.

“I didn’t mean to tell him, I sent him a photo I meant to send to my mum.” Your voice was barely above a whisper, your gaze laying upon the broken bottle on the floor. In this moment, you felt broken too.

“Didn’t mean to? You didn’t mean to!” He was crazy, tugging at his hair as more fat tears fell to the floor.

“So what? Keep this a secret so you can try to say it’s mine? Trap me in this fucking mess you’ve made!”

“I haven’t done anything! He’s your fucking baby! I didn’t tell you because you were so far away, I didn’t want you to worry because you couldn’t do anything! I wanted you to focus on your fucking job and not stress out!” You couldn’t stop them now, hot tears falling down your face quicker than you could talk. Your voice was shaking, your hands knotting themselves into your hair as you pulled, trying to feel anything other than this burning ache in your chest.

“Bullshit! You didn’t want to tell me because he isn’t mine!” He screamed again swiping his hand across the shelf of plates, causing them to fall down to the ground, the shattering so loud.

“Stop it! Stop this please!”

“Why should I? Because I caught you out in your lie? You fucking-“ Dropping to your knees you choked out a cry, the tears falling freely and your heart breaking. He stopped in that moment, and you were so unsure of what he was going to do next. When he moved towards your frame you scurried backwards, scared of him.

You were scared of him. He hadn’t meant to let it all out like this, he wanted to be calm and rational. But it couldn’t be helped, he was hurting so badly and when he saw your stomach and that fucking sign he lost it. He was so insecure, so scared that you’d found solace in someone else’s arms because he was away so much and that this was the result. He couldn’t bare it. But seeing you run from him like that? Eyes filled with terror and face covered in tears he knew in that moment he’d gone too far.

“Kuroo, I’m so scared.” You managed to get out before he stepped backwards, face now contorted in horror.

“W-what did you just c-call me?” He staggered backwards, trying to grab onto anything he could hold. He couldn’t have heard that right, you wouldn’t use his family name… would you?

“Kuroo, I’m so scared of you right now. P-please just go away.” He was breaking all over again, seeing you so small and tiny, curled up into a ball like he himself was only a little while ago. He felt like you’d deserved this at first, but now the clarity had hit him. Of course you wouldn’t betray him like that, he loved you and you loved him. But he’d scared you and hurt you, calling you such disgusting things and accusing you of such shameful acts.

“Y/n, I-“

“P-please don’t hurt me Kuroo.” Your whole body felt like it was on fire, but you were cold and shaking. He stepped backwards again, tears falling even faster now. That night ended abruptly, him turning and running from the house and you curled up on the living room floor, crying yourself into a restless sleep.

You awoke the next morning in your bed, unsure how you got there. Kuroo was nowhere to be seen, you meekly called for him but there was no reply. Slipping out of the bed you found your slippers and traipsed into the kitchen. He was there, head bent awkwardly over the counter asleep on the bar stool. You tapped his shoulder and he mumbled to himself before his eyes fluttered open. They were filled with worry the second his gaze landed upon you. Your eyes were puffy and red, your hair sticking up at odd angles and all the colour washed from your face.

“Kuroo, did you really sleep here all night?” He nodded, dropping his forehead back onto the counter in an attempt to hide his tears.

“Shh baby, it’s okay I promise.” Your voice was still shaking, your hand placed softly on his back as his shoulders shook with his silent sobs.

“I’m so sorry. I was just hurting so much, and I let myself fester in it, let myself hate you.” He reached for you then, burying his head in the crook of your neck.

“I understand, to be honest after last night I’m not sure keeping it from you was the right idea, but I just didn’t want you to worry about me.” You carded your fingers through his hair as he sobbed into you, covering you in warm tears.

“Why did you call me Kuroo?”

“Because I was scared, and I couldn’t think of any other way to let you know.” He pulled you tighter and cried even heavier.

“It’s all my f-fault. I’m so, so sorry baby.” He hiccupped into your neck, placing chased kisses to your collarbone.

“It’s okay Tetsu, it’ll all be okay.” His head lifting from your neck at that moment, he caught your lips with his own. He tasted of tears and the kiss was harsh, but filled with so much passion, want, and pain. But it was a promise, a promise that everything would be okay again. And you both believed it.

花吐き病 - Part 2 – The Clawing of Branches

- Hajime Iwaizumi x Fem!Reader

- Warnings: Angst, swearing, vomiting,

- Summary: The sakura trees were coming up to bloom, and you could feel the creeping of branches throughout your chest, pulling at your lungs and winding around your heart.

—————

She's just so beautiful, I'd never stand a chance.

The petals stopped after a while. You were left a heaving mess, limbs bent at odd angles as you drooled into the porcelain bowl. Your eyes were glassy, refusing to focus on anything but the soft pink flowers dancing across the water’s surface. Your thoughts were muddled as you pulled yourself up, legs wobbling underneath your weight. This wasn’t normal - you mentally scolded yourself, this wasn’t just abnormal, this was unheard of. As much as you willed it to not be true, the creeping feeling that burned your chest and tore at your lungs told you that this was no dream. You replayed his words in your head over and over, tormenting yourself as you stared into the bathroom mirror. Of course he’d like her, she’s little miss perfect. Your reflection was sickening, red puffy eyes and burst blood vessels trailing up your neck. Death. That was the first word that came to mind as you traced the bruises smeared across your skin. Your gaze dropped to the jacket you’d wrapped around yourself in a desperate attempt for comfort and your chest tightened further. You played with the fraying sleeves, twisting the thread before pulling your eyes back up to the mirror, to your reflection. With shaking fingers, you turned the tap on. Cool water started pouring from the faucet as you cupped your hands beneath the stream. It was refreshing to feel the cold against your burning skin, nice to wash your mouth of the dizzying taste of petals. After a while, your skin had settled, your eyes less noticeably puffy and the tear tracks long gone after washing your face. Glancing at your watch you realised you’d been gone for an hour now, more than enough time for Oikawa to worry about you. You moved towards the door, legs still wobbling slightly.

You slowly pulled back the door to the gym, swapping your shoes over and stepping inside. The silence was deafening in a way, practise halting because you’d finally returned.

“Y/n! Where were you? Iwa-chan-“ Oikawa stopped in his tracks when he caught your eyes.

“Holy shit what happened?” He said as he rushed over to you, allowing the ball he was holding to fall to the floor aimlessly. You shrugged, trying to play it off as if everything were okay. But the second Oikawa caught sight of your bruises his face dropped.

“Who did this?” Iwaizumi was quiet, his voice barely above a whisper but the anger was almost palpable. You shook under his gaze, opting to look at Oikawa instead.

“I think I’m ill. I’ve been being sick.” The boys exchanged a look of disbelief so quickly you almost missed it. Almost.

“Well, you were in the gardens, so maybe you had an allergic reaction to something?” Your eyes widened at this, hoping Iwaizumi missed what Oikawa said, but they were so close to you that was impossible.

“You, you were in the gardens?” You swallowed, but the lump in your throat wouldn’t budge. Your mouth went dry, words failing you again.

“Yeah, she went looking for you.”

“Did-“ Iwaizumi sighed, running a hand through his hair. “- did you find me?”

Tentatively, you moved your gaze from Oikawa to Iwaizumi, eyes meeting his. You couldn’t help the tears that welled in your eyes, threatening to spill as you rushed to wipe them away.

“N-no! I…” You wiped at your eyes with the sleeves of his jacket. “I just felt sick.” His hands wrapped around your wrists, and he brought them away from your face. He was bending over slightly to be eye level with you, his face so close to yours. You could hear the whispers echoing around the gym as he stared at you. Your heart was beating so fast you swore he would be able to hear it in the silent gym. Your face flushed as he moved closer, but Oikawa placed a hand on his shoulder, and he relaxed under the brunette’s touch.

“I’ll take her home, you go ahead and finish practice without me Iwa-chan.” With one final look at you, Iwaizumi relinquished and agreed, letting go of you and stepping backwards, drawing back up to his full height. Your skin was hot where he had held you, your body reacting to his touch.

The walk home was quiet, Oikawa not wanting to push you into talking. His hand was just barely grazing yours, every so often just glancing past as if he was trying to hold you but was too scared. Every time you felt his hand against yours, you nearly grabbed him in pure desperation, just wanting these feelings for Iwaizumi to disappear. But no matter how desperate for the affection you were, how much you craved the feeling of just being loved, you knew now that you could never be his, your heart was Iwa-chan’s, and the flowers blooming in your ribcage were proof of that. You lifted your head to look at the tall brunette beside you, but he was looking off into the distance. You cleared your throat, breaking the tension between the two of you as he snapped his gaze to meet yours.

“You didn’t have to walk me home, so thank you Toru.” He smiled softly, raising a hand to ruffle your hair.

“Yes I did, you look like death. I didn’t trust that you’d make it home alone safely.” A light blush crept up his cheeks as he held your gaze. His smile dropped suddenly, and he stopped walking. You paused a few steps ahead, turning to face him.

“What did Iwa-chan mean?” He was fiddling with his fingers, a nervous habit he hadn’t shown since middle school.

“I don’t know-“

“Y/n. Please tell me.” His voice was strained, and he coughed to try and cover the wobble, but you could tell he was upset about something. He was avoiding your gaze now, eyes glued to the floor by your feet.

“When I went to the garden I…” You could feel the crawling again. Slowly at first, but soon you felt each and every branch push against your chest, curling around your heart and threading through your ribs. You struggled for breath, the petals beginning to fill your lungs again as you panicked.

“She… Aoi confessed, and Iwai…” You stopped, tears spilling from your eyes as you began gasping for breath again. You could taste it, the sickly sweet, almost perfume-like, taste of the petals clawed at your throat. You must have looked terrified because Oikawa had never moved so fast to hold you against his chest, cooing into your hair.

“It’s okay. I promise you it’s all going to be okay.” His voice was equally pained, and soon you felt what must have been his tears fall onto you.

As he held you in his arms whispering softly into your hair, as he cried for you, the flowers stopped moving. You could breathe again. The branches didn’t retreat like in the bathroom, but they loosened. Their vice-like grip lost in favour of a gentle entwining with your bones and muscles. You could feel the wood, heavy and thick, but you could breathe through it all as if the flowers had moved to allow your lungs to expand, and the petals had stopped flowering inside of you. You didn’t understand any of this, but if being held by Oikawa, at this moment right now, meant less pain then you would take it. You allowed yourself to fall into his embrace and cry. Your legs were almost too weak to support you as Oikawa wrapped his arms around you, protecting you from the outside world. He curled his body around yours, pulling you flush against his chest and burying his head into your hair as his own tears fell onto you. You remained like that for a while, allowing yourselves to cry on each other until both of you seemed to be out of tears.

“Thank you, Toru.” It was barely audible, your face buried deep in his shirt.

“You don’t need to thank me. God, I hate seeing you like this.” He replied, pulling away from you and looking into your eyes once more. His face was blotchy, skin red and pained from the tears, and his nose running. You knew you probably looked equally bad, worse even. But at that moment, you needed more, needed to feel something other than pain. So when he leant in, lips so close to yours, for once you didn’t pull away. He smiled down at you, placing a softer kiss against your forehead, and pulling away from you fully. He took your hand in his, pulling you along the street again towards your home.

The house was empty and silent, your father still at work which was usual for him. You had given Toru your keys, allowing him to open the door and invite you in as if he lived there. You smiled softly as he helped you take off your shoes and took your bag off your shoulder, placing it on the floor beside his own. He ushered you into the living room, sitting you down and fishing a blanket out of the storage cupboard for you. He turned the heating up, disappearing into the kitchen. You heard him turn the kettle on, some clinking of mugs and called out to him.

“You don’t have to do this you know…” There was no reply, he just reappeared a few minutes later with two cups of steaming coffee and some snacks tucked under his arm. He placed the cups carefully in front of you on the sofa, lazily threw the snacks on the table, pulled back the blanket around you, and sat beside you. He slung an arm around you carefully, leaning forwards to pass you the mug when you asked so nicely. His smile was back again, his eyes no longer watery and sad. Looking at you always made him smile. The evening passed quickly like this, the two of you just enjoying the other’s company and watching shit television wrapped in his arms. Then it all changed. He sat forwards, pulling his arm from around you and sitting upright.

“Are you okay?”

“Do you like me? Could you ever feel what you feel for Iwaizumi for me?” He stared at you, his gaze cold. Stunned, your mouth just opened and closed, your mind searching for an answer.

“I love you y/n. I can’t just stand here anymore and watch him hurt you. I want the world for you, I’d do anything to make you feel happy again.” You paused. Happy? When hadn’t you felt happy around Iwaizumi?

“I see you every day, pinning over him and falling even harder, but he never even notices. He just ignores you, and you deserve so much better.”

“Oikawa I don’t understand.”

“What is there to understand? I’m telling you that I love you, that I can make you feel loved.” There it was his feelings finally fully out in the open. He wasn’t being coy, trying to joke about it like last time. He was baring his all for you.

“I… I’m not sure.” You moved to stand, wrapping the blanket around yourself.

“I need some time. I think you should go. Please.” He was quiet and still for a moment, before standing.

“Please don’t play with my feelings y/n.” He was calm as he left, slipping on his shoes, and bidding you farewell. You stood in the open doorway watching him leave. But your chest didn’t tighten like it did with Iwaizumi. Your lungs didn’t burn at the thought of never kissing him again. But, somehow, he stopped your pain, made the flowers stop growing. Maybe he was your chance at life, at surviving whatever this was. Maybe he could stem the growth, at least for a little while. Maybe Oikawa could save you from the deadly love you felt for Iwaizumi.

Answering your sister’s call was the last thing you expected to do today. Only for her to explain that she wanted you to babysit for a couple of hours. It’s not like you’re not good with children, it's just more that you’re not really the playful type. In what other children at your age had lacked in education, you lacked in imagination. Every time your niece wanted to play you felt guilty for not playing along. Yet for some odd reason your niece loved you? Every time you saw her at your sister’s house she always came running to you like some magnet. However, you hadn’t introduced her to Kuroo just yet. Due to him feeling “an enormous pressure” with you being her favorite and something along the lines of he can’t take your place. You always laughed at his snarky comments like sure, he could take your place as the favorite relative? Yeah right.

“Can I come with you?”, you look over at Kuroo questioningly. You both give each other a blank stare, you confused and Kuroo thinking you didn’t hear him. “Yeah, I thought you were coming with me this whole time?” Kuroo nods unaware that he made that decision. You wave him off, remembering him making a remark yesterday about he’s going to replace you and be the best relative. Kuroo slides right next to you on the couch, kissing your cheek before laying his head on your lap. “I’m kind of scared, your niece seems to effortlessly love you. I think I might have to bribe her to take your spot.” You laugh at him wanting to bribe your niece, truly a conman aura. You start playing with his hair, “Well my niece loves anything I love, so I’m sure she’ll love you too.”

Upon arrival at your sister’s, Kuroo's nerves never once faltered; he knows you talk highly of your niece. What’ll happen if he doesn’t impress her or even worse makes her cry on instinct? Will you break up with him? Realize he’s terrible with kids and then break up with him? Glancing over to Kuroo in the passenger’s seat you see him fiddling with his fingers, a habit he picked up from you. Knowing the feeling all too well you grab his hands, “No need to be nervous we’re just watching my niece. Don’t worry, she’s really well behaved and super smart for her age.” Kuroo nods knowing if anything happens you were right beside him, you laugh. “And you really thought you were going to replace me looking like a nervous wreck? You have a lot to learn my love.”, kissing his cheek as you hop out the car.

Knocking on your sister's door, hearing footsteps and her animals patter beyond the door. Her husband opens the door greeting you and Kuroo before you hear your niece’s footsteps running down the hallway. You bend down as your niece greets you in a big hug, “There she is! Did you miss me?” Kuroo’s heart clenches at the sight of you with your niece. “I have so much to show you and tell you! I got student of the month and I also did this art of me and-“ your niece glances behind you. “Um, who’s that?”, you laugh looking back at Kuroo nodding in his direction letting him know to introduce himself. “I’m Kuroo, I’m your aunt's boyfriend.”, he extended his hand out so she could shake it. She slowly takes steps to him before grabbing his finger and shaking his hand suspiciously.

“Auntie, can he play with us?”, you tap your finger against your chin. Kuroo coughs, interrupting your thoughts, “I guess so.”, you both stick your tongues out at each other. “Alright sis, the dog and cat are fed so just keep an eye on them. Don’t give them any more treats please!”, she glared at you knowing you often bribed them. “As for her, bedtime is at 9:00 since it’s the weekend.”, your niece huffs as you ruffle her hair. “We’ll be back in a couple of hours, thank you both for agreeing to watch the house.”, you nod as you walk your sister to her front door, locking it for safety. Turning around to see Kuroo and your niece staring at each other, you could just feel the awkwardness in the air. “Ok you two, what do you want to do first?” Kuroo looks at your niece shrugging. “Let’s go play in my room!”, you grab Kuroo shaking the nerves out of his shoulders as you follow your niece to her room.

Walking to your nieces room you feel yourself deflate, you hate playing pretend. How could you possibly be so bad at something that wasn’t even real? Your niece grabs multiple character toys before handing some to Kuroo and to you. As she tells you the narrative for her pretend play you look over at Kuroo, seeing him listening intently even wanting to add some plot points. You smile, for someone who was a nervous wreck a couple of minutes ago, he suited this role nicely. Kuroo was always so attentive and patient you knew he would get along nicely with your niece. “Auntie! Are you listening? Stop looking at your boyfriend.”, Kuroo laughs as you look away guiltily, apologizing.

“Ok, now that you’re focused auntie! You’ll be the fairy cat, while Roo is the DJ cat, and I'll be Gabriella, the human.” Kuroo looks at the toy your niece handed you, poking at its feet, giggling. Halfway through playing you decide you were going to excuse yourself to the bathroom. It wasn’t till your niece heard the door click that she put down her toys and looked at Kuroo. “Roo, I think auntie doesn’t really like playing pretend but you’re really good at it.”, Kuroo smiles before he decides to backtrack. “Why do you think that is?”, your niece pulls him closer before whispering in his ear. “She says it’s a secret but I think she just doesn’t know how to pretend.”, she pulls away from Kuroo’s ear before grabbing her toy once again. “But she tries, that’s why she’s my favorite.”, Kuroo takes a mental note to ask you what the secret is later. Ruffling your niece’s hair, “Well thank you for trusting me enough to tell me that.”. She giggles at Kuroo and continues to play pretend with him.

As you go in the bathroom you feel yourself relax, hearing your niece giggling felt somewhat rewarding. Knowing she finally had someone interesting enough to play with was a relief. You knew she would get attached to Kuroo, I mean he often worked with children due to his job. Feeling appreciative for him, you decide to take this time to update your sister on how everything is going so far. Opening the door to go take a picture of the fur babies but instead are met with the sight of Kuroo dramatically playing with your niece. Snapping a picture of that instead, making sure to make it your lock screen when you have time. Watching them from afar, thinking of how your future with Kuroo might look. Taking a moment to imagine a mini combination of you and him walking around your apartment. Thinking of moments like Kuroo holding a baby, Kuroo teaching your kid volleyball, or watching him play with your child from afar. You feel yourself fall deep into the comfort of the moment, just watching how amazing your partner was and continues to be.

Slowly walking away forgetting the task at hand, you softly head downstairs. Kuroo turns around to find your back turned to him and all he can think of is that he hopes you're okay. Snapping back into the moment with your niece as he hears you continuing to head downstairs. You find your sister's black cat laying in its cat tower, giving it strokes on its back. Looking around to find her pet beagle, only to find it also resting in its pet bed. Sending pictures and a text to her, reassuring her to continue having fun because everything was going swiftly. Walking around her house you see a picture of your sister and you as children in her hallway, you falter seeing your parents behind you in the picture. You touch the frame baffled how long ago this picture was from, thinking back to the day. Your parents were fighting but your sister paid them no mind, she was always such an independent thinker. You remember her telling you that they were just dumb adults and to only focus on her and taking a beautiful picture. To end up so different from her, you wonder what went wrong, why you were so…different?

“Auntie! Kuroo says you make the best smoothies! Can you make me one?” You and the pets are disturbed by your niece's booming voice traveling through the house. “Oh did he? You know what since he said that he has to help me make it now!”. Kuroo keeps a pace behind your niece while you stand in front of the staircase, for safety reasons. You peck Kuroo on the cheek, “Which smoothie are you talking about? You’re the one who usually makes me smoothies, handsome.”. Kuroo hugs you from behind as you start looking through the cabinet for a blender. “I’m talking about the chocolate banana one you make for me, when I want a sweet treat.”, you nod remembering that one time you made it for him when he got home from work. To be fair though, chocolate made anything taste good but hearing Kuroo brag about it as if it was the first smoothie he ever had in his life, made your heart beat ten times faster.

“Ok lovie, I’m going to look for the ingredients but when I say cover your ears-”, you demonstrate. Even though she knows how to do an action so simple, you don’t want her to feel alone. “Make sure you cover them because the noise is really loud, okay?”, she flashes you a thumbs up heading to sit down at the table. Kuroo pulls out a chair for her, leaning on the counter top so he can monitor you both at the same time. Your niece gets up to look at all the artwork displayed on the fridge, looking for a specific piece. “Here it is! Look auntie! This is the one I did in class, it’s us!” You stop chopping for a second to look at the artwork she’s showing, bending down to her eye level. “This is such a well drawn picture, lovie. I see you drew my hair nice and pretty!” pointing to the picture, letting her know you understood it. “Oh! You even added little cat ears to us like your toys! I love it, can I take it home with me?” She nods as you give her a hug. Kuroo smiles to himself so hard it hurts, you were so easy to love it was effortless. From your kind personality to your adoring smile, he would never doubt his ability to love you.

You hand the drawing to Kuroo so he could place it by your phone, remembering to take the drawing home with you guys. Kuroo drags your niece to the living room, asking her if she wanted to watch anything as you finished chopping the remaining smoothie ingredients. “Ok lovie, cover your ears!”, you watch your niece cover her ears but unexpectedly you see Kuroo covers his as well. As you start blending, you watch Kuroo get up and place his elbows over your ears. Laughing at how considerate and ridiculous your boyfriend was. Flashing a thumbs up to signify that you finished up blending, Kuroo let’s go setting up three glasses. “Ok lovie, order up!”, your niece comes running to get her smoothie. “Wow, so good! Roo was right, it's delicious!”, you smile looking at the clock seeing it was almost time to put her to bed. “Thirty minutes till someone has to go to bed!”, you pinch her cheek before giving it a quick kiss. “No fair! I felt like I spent no time with you!” you look down sadly, seeing her pout. “Well, I can read you a bedtime story and we can do your night time routine together! Just you and I, no stinky Roo there.” she laughs as Kuroo rolls his eyes.

Making sure to do her whole routine with her as she talked about various topics to the episodes she watched to the things she learned in school. As she’s talking you start to comb her hair, braiding it. You see her in the mirror yawning as you tie off her braid. You help her dust the bed before tucking her in. “Auntie, can you read me something with Roo?” you stop before kissing her head. Nodding, going to go call Kuroo, “My love, I think you’ve officially taken my spot…”, Kuroo grins pulling you into a side hug. “Welp, I told you this would happen. Nothing lasts forever baby, let’s go.”, you tell Kuroo to go ahead while you pick her favorite book. Entering the room hoping you chose correctly. “I know I haven’t read to you in a while lovie, I hope this is still your favorite.”, you pull out the book behind your back. She nods excitedly, “Well it’s my favorite when you read it to me.”. You start getting embarrassed realizing why she liked this book so much, hiding behind the book. “Roo, auntie reads this book the best she does these voices and makes the sound effects and everything!”, Kuroo looks over at you grinning. “Oh does she now? Well I can’t wait to hear it. I’ll hold the book while you read babe.”

You cough, clearing your throat while you shakily read the title. “Auntie, you’re not doing the voice…”, she pouts. Kuroo looks at you seeing how embarrassed you are, “No need to be embarrassed auntie! Please Roo needs to see how awesome of a storyteller you are!” Deciding to put your pride aside you start reading with the voice, hearing Kuroo chuckle at how bizarre you sound. Making sound effects and all, Kuroo thought you were incredibly dorky in an affectionate way. As you finished reading, you saw your niece slowly starting to drift off to sleep, telling her softly goodnight. Lighting up the room with her night lights before exiting her room, shutting the door. As one door closes another one opens, “We’re back! Sorry for coming a bit earlier than expected, we were tuckered out.”. You wave your hands, telling her that it was no problem. You bid each other a goodbye before getting in your car heading home.

Getting home you immediately feel exhaustion take over you, changing clothes and getting ready to sleep. Coming out of the bathroom you see Kuroo dusting the bed, getting ready as well. He meets you halfway before lifting up his hand, expecting a high-five from you. You laugh as your hands meet, “We’re the best relatives ever!”. He grabs you, pulling you into a hug, laughing at his exclamation. Shaking your head and going to lay down on your side, “Tetsu can I be honest with you?”. Kuroo bobs his head, “How bad did I give you the ick while reading that book?”, he laughs and you suddenly feel the urge to crawl in a hole. “I KNEW IT!”, you hid under the covers not wanting to see any sign of life. Kuroo lightly pulls the covers down, “You didn’t give me the ick per say. More like “I got with a major dork.” but I knew you were a dork when we met so I wasn’t too phased.” He kisses your head before pulling you into a cuddle, “You know I think because you’re such a dork that’s why your niece favors you so much.”. Your fingers dance around his chest feeling guilty about getting so much love from your niece. “You know, till this day I really don’t know why I’m her favorite. I can’t even play pretend correctly.”, Kuroo remembers what your niece told him earlier that night. “You know your niece said you had a secret. Care to tell me what it is…?” you look up at him, raising a brow. Trying to think deeply about what secret you told her, only to reach a blank. “Tell me more about this said secret Tetsu?”, Kuroo starts petting your hair.

“She said you had a secret about why you don’t like playing pretend with her.”, you sigh, shaking your head. “I used the word “secret” as an excuse not to dump my trauma onto her.”, still Kuroo starts nudging you hoping you would take the hint to open up. “My parents didn’t really allow me to be a “kid” so I don’t really know how to pretend. I just get a little insecure about it, I mean how does one not know how to play pretend? It’s not even real!”, you laugh at how frivolous it all sounds. Kuroo takes in what you’re saying thinking about your… strange parents. Feeling sympathetic towards you, knowing his parents allowed him some sort of kid-like innocence. Even though his parents had a rocky relationship they never included him, allowing him to focus on friendship and sports. “You can play pretend, that is how we got together in the first place baby.”, you bump his chest playful. “That was a life or death situation, not the same.” You both laugh remembering how you both were so entranced on selling yourself as a couple, years ago. “Don’t think too hard, loving someone like you isn’t complicated. You’re a very caring and nurturing person. Everyone is attracted to a beautiful soul like yours, especially me.”, you roll your eyes.

“You know Tetsu spending today with my niece made me think about us… about having…” Kuroo’s heart stops with each break you take, are you about to say what he thinks you’re going to say? “About having a possible child together someday?” Kuroo felt his heart burst out of his chest, seeing you with your niece being a dork but being oh so kind, he couldn’t help but think of you being a mother. A mini version of each other walking around? Get him a defibrillator, stat. “I mean I know we haven’t gotten married yet and maybe it’s too soon to have children but having a child would be something to start thinking about.” hearing Kuroo’s heartbeat increase as you continue talking. “If it’s a boy, it’ll have your crazy hair or if it’s a girl it’ll have my nose, it makes me think how badly I want that. With you.” You look up to see Kuroo’s face blank, you laugh thinking you’ve broken him. “I know that I don’t come from the best family but I want to be able to give my child an opportunity that I didn’t have, a loving family.”, Kuroo pulls you into a bone crushing hug feeling your sentiment deeper than you could ever know. A loving family, you and him together creating another beautiful life, what more could he ask for? He settles into your shoulder, speech coming out muffled. “You’d be the greatest mother. Seeing you with your niece, I’d never doubt your motherly abilities. You love people so seamlessly and that’s exactly what a child needs.”, you tear up in his arms feeling a sense of peace wash over you. The man you loved, who grew with you these past few years, never once doubted your ability to be a mother.

“So, when do we get started?” you laugh. “No way! You have to marry me first Tetsu.”, Kuroo lifts his eyebrows. “That’s manageable. Expect it soon, always be ready!”, he pecks your lips before you both fall asleep. Kuroo knew he had the ring stashed away in his closet dresser beneath the million novelty ties you got for him each holiday. Truth be told he got that ring after your first official month living together. Living together showed him that he didn’t want to do this life with anyone else but you. This one joke between you was sooner than you think.
