“L/n Y/n! We need you in the office as soon as possible”

You heard the intercom come on and call. Having been on your break whenever you heard the message deliberately be delivered, you were a bit annoyed because it was in fact your time off… but you were a cop so it was your priority.

Walking the hallway, you reached your destination and stood at the door, taking a deep breath and preparing yourself mentally before entering the office. You weren't sure what to expect whenever you were called to go to your bosses office, especially when it was through the intercoms.

But this time, you had an idea of what you might've been called in for… and when you went into the room to see all the scattered paperwork and files, it only confirmed your suspicions furthermore.

“There you are.” Your boss muttered, putting down the files that he had been holding.

Bowing, you walked closer to the desk and stood over it, watching your boss stand up from his chair to be at eye level with you, despite the fact you still had to lift your head to look at the tall man eye-to-eye.

“I apologize for taking longer than I was supposed to. I assume this is an urgent matter, yeah?” you asked, looking at the files that were scattered across the desk, picking some up to investigate them yourself.

“Very urgent.” He responded.

You worked closely with the boss of your station, therefore you were promoted often, and worked on a lot of harder cases compared to your coworkers, in short, you were one of the more known officers of the area.

So when you heard the intercom come on asking you to meet in the boss’s office during your break, you knew this was serious.

“I'm sure you remember the criminal that we haven't yet been able to catch?.” Your boss asked, you thought for a moment before looking at him.

You glanced around the room and sighed, “I'm gonna need you to be more specific with what you say boss, we've had a lot of criminals in the last year.”

A few of the other close police who were also in the room glanced at you due to your informal response, you were among the top police so they couldn't correct you on your manners either.

Looking back at the chief, seeing his small, almond eyes as he let out a small sigh as he sat back down behind his desk, never breaking eye contact as he signaled you to the chair across from him. Raising an eyebrow you walked back to his direction and took a seat.

“The one that we quoted as the ‘Mastermind.’”

You felt your heart sink at his words, recalling the incidents that had happened with him as you remembered the gruesome crime scene that took place one year ago.

“He's back!?” You questioned, feeling your head begin to spin as the flashbacks replayed over and over again in your head, going silent and beginning to dread having to see that anonymous man who you were never able to see face-to-face.

How could you be such a coward to someone who was anxious to show his face and instead wore a mask everywhere he went? He didn't even have a face and you were afraid of him, that truly made you ashamed of yourself as a high rank cop.

“We assume, there's been some recent cases of gambling, a body was discovered near a lake too.”

Heart beating, you grabbed your chest and bent down, your forhead had sweat as you looked down at your bosses paperwork that read ‘Choi Soobin.’

Choi Soobin, the now Police Headchief and of course, your boss, started out as just any normal citizen.. not that you could really call him normal since he went to the top schools of the city. He'd always been a smart student.

He himself, had also suffered by fault of the ‘Mastermind’ and his men, who came and ruined his everything, crushed it.

The worst part was that you didn't even know what connection the ‘Mastermind’ had with any of his victims, you couldn't find anything that all his victims had in common that led him to murder them.

“Have you informed Yeonjun yet..?” You questioned, looking at Choi Soobin from across the table, reading the pity in his eyes for putting such a weight on you. He knew that it'd be hard for you to face someone like the anonymous ‘Mastermind' again after a year. Have to see him behind such a mask after all the trauma he inflicted on you.

“I have, he showed a similar reaction to that of yours, and since you both are my best I will be incharging you both with the case.”

You gulped and then nodded, excusing yourself from the room and taking your leave. How could you ever forget that night? How dare he come back after disappearing for more than 365 days, and just as you were starting to erase all those bad thoughts and beginning to think of him as dead, he just dared to reappear in your life like thi-

“You look like you've just seen a ghost. Looks like hearing of his return hurt your high ego a little bit.” You heard a familiar male voice say, making you look up and see the one and only Choi Yeonjun looking down at you.

“Not the time-” you muttered, seeing him bring his hand to his chin, making a thinking posture.

“If I knew it would bring your ego down so low I might as well have invited him to drink some coffee-”

“Not the time!” You yelled in a joking pitch, trying to get him to shut up and stop making those types of jokes especially when he knew how much you despised that man who remained faceless.

You argued with Yeonjun for a moment until the conversation became more serious, making you guys make your way to the table that was held mainly for discussions, which had luckily been empty by the time you both made it.

“If he's gonna strike again, where do you think it'll be this time..?” You asked in a monotone pitch, keeping a serious and steady voice as you waited for his response.

His hand was placed under his chin as he rested his head on it, being unable to think of a definite answer of what he could possibly tell you.

He placed his finger on the chart that highlighted a specific area of the town, moving it over to the forest that held the river where the last body happened to be found.

“Whoever he is, we know he's not alone. I can't help but notice that every single one of his crimes revolves around this certain area.” He said, motioning his finger in a circle around the chart before pointing right at the middle.

You thought about his comment for a moment before verifying, “You're right, I never noticed that-” you muttered to yourself, writing it down on a brand new page in your case notebook that you always carried around in case of things like this, “Do you think he could be inspired by some of the older, more notorious killers? Like the ghost doctor murderer?” You asked, while continuing to write the new discovery onto your notebook.

Yeonjun thought for a moment, before questioning you, “The ghost doctor murder? Like the one who broke into a hospital and killed an un-belonging ghost doctor who had been performing a surgery on his patient?” you nodded to his response and added, “They have a few similarities, they both stayed in the same area somewhat. The ghost doctor killer didn't try to hide the evidence of a murder, he just cleaned up the scene and fled.”

“But there's a difference.” Yeonjun added, “The ghost doctor killer fled and was never found, we don't even have an identity and ever since his disappearance in 2003, we have no information regarding him or his whereabouts.”

You nodded in response and shook your head, “I feel like there's a connection there, but I truthfully don't have a reason to believe so.” Yeonjun looked back down at the paperwork and sighed, “Yeah well, we can't disregard gut feelings.”

You nodded in agreement and the investigation carried on, not like it really mattered since at the end of the day, the two of you still ended up in a dead end. No leading connections, hints, explanations, nothing… and there was nothing you could do about it but leave it at that and go home exhausted with the thought that you were yet again, back at square one.

_________

“Do you have them yet?”

Taehyun left what he was reading and looked at Kai “When do you need them by? I have them but they're not ready yet.”

Huening sighed, unknowing of what to respond with.

“I need them immediately, I need to know who we need to deal with next.”

A worried look came across Taehyun’s face as he looked over at Huening Kai, “You're already gonna carry out the plan!?” Taehyun asked, Kai wasn't the type of person to cramp up the crimes he commited, so he couldn't understand why he was in such a rush to do so now.

“Why of course, make them commit their sin of gambling and watch them realize that they have a debt too big in order to pay, works every time.” Taehyun noticed a smirk creep onto Huening’s face as he looked down at the table that they used.

Taehyun slightly frowned, trying to find the best way to word his question in order to not get in trouble with Kai, “I don't really know if I'm allowed to ask but, if you only kill people who have history, what did she do?”

Kai wasn't too sure himself, his men had just told him that she was a serious case and was probably gonna attack again soon. Huening couldn't let another innocent life go to waste, especially when they had so much left to explore.

Therefore he knew he had to act fast, and Taehyun understood the message, “Alright, I'll go tell Beomgyu then.” Taehyun said, turning and making his way out of the room after getting Kai’s permission for it.

Huening knew this was wrong of him. He knew this made him a horrible person because just what human could be capable of something so gruesome such as murder. He knew that the police were after him and he didn't have much more time to act as the police finally began to take his case seriously.

He found himself chuckling through his inner thoughts, thinking “If only they knew.”

Truthfully, if only they knew… he wouldn't need to struggle so much with keeping his real identity from getting leaked, in his head, he wasn't a bad person. If you moved past the amount of people he killed he wasn't a bad person, yet no one other than his close relatives could see that he wasn't so bad.

Huening Kai was a well mannered citizen, and although he was the youngest in the casino, everyone under him had no choice but to obey him, they knew the consequences if they didn't, other than the amount of people he'd killed, he hadn't committed any crimes and his name was relatively clean. If the police suspected anyone, he'd be the last person on the list, and even if they did, he was the type of citizen that the police would try so hard to excuse, putting a dozen of reasons on why he couldn't possibly be the culprit.

And yet, he didn't just murder anyone, the police might be after him but he made the world a safer place by eliminating those who ruined the well being of others.

He was so deep in thought that he didn't even realize Taehyun was back with Beomgyu. He only realized after the two of them waved their hands in front of his face in an attempt to distract him from his trance and bring him back to earth.

“Earth to Hyuka-” Beomgyu muttered in an annoyed pitch, holding the necessary documents that Kai asked for.

“You're back..?” He asked in a low tone, looking up at the two of them who took a seat on two random chairs that were around the room, Taehyun sighed as he responded, “Beomgyu was being really loud on the way here, maybe fell one or two times-”

“I did not!!” Beomgyu corrected, to which Taehyun simply just ignored, “I'm surprised you didn't hear us making our way here since it was probably audible for over 20 miles.”

“I was not that loud!” Beomgyu argued, disliking Taehyun's selection of words because it made him come off as uneducated, Taehyun silenced Beomgyu as he rolled his eyes and crossed his arms, placing the paperwork on Kai’s desk.

He had been resting his cheek on his hand, simply waiting for them to finish arguing, although he did dislike the amount of noise, he let it slip past because he genuinely found their arguments funny, hearing them ramble on about practically nothing. “Y'all done?” He asked, making both Taehyun and Beomgyu bow in apology for their immature behavior and go back to serious mode, looking at him as he lifted his head high and looked through the paperwork that had been brought and placed on his desk.

He opened up the files and looked at the name. He knew one thing for sure… he recognized this face, having gone viral multiple times for her cases, yet never found, good at disguising her true face, so therefore it remains unknown, techniques so well thought out that he just had to use some of them for his own crimes…

“The red cloak lady, an urban legend which became a reality whenever someone who wasn't in their right mind took inspiration from the old folktale.” you repeated, looking over at Yeonjun who was just as confused as you were.

“So the red cloak lady originated from a fairytale?”

“Folktale” you corrected as Yeonjun brushed you off and reiterated, “Wasn't that tale written over 100 years ago?” You shrugged and looked it up, “it definitely didn't originate here that's for sure.”

Yeonjun nodded, taking notes of what you had read, “Wasn't her last active case like over a decade ago? She was never caught and we have no idea on who she is, so she's probably already dead, don't you think?”

You agreed, doing your own personal research, having zero clue on what you were even looking for and at least trying to find one simple fact that could uncover something about the culprit, anything, even if it was what he had for breakfast you'd be more than happy. Yet… nothing, you were still at square one and unable to move forward.

“Ugh- i'm so done with this…” you muttered, slamming your head onto your arms which laid flat on the table, resting your eyes to get a break from reality. Neither you or Yeonjun could do anything until the ‘Mastermind' pulled his next move and the thought of that just made you sick, thinking about all that wasted time.

And wasted time was all that ran through your head upon thinking that you couldn't act until the 'Mastermind's next move, but you were dead wrong if you thought you could take it easy until then…

The ear piercing alarms rang across the entire station, chaos being heard from outside the room as the rest of the cops currently on shift wondered what was going on. You knew immediately what this was… you never heard the alarms unless it was a serious and current break in of a building, normally important, something such as a bank, or vip home. There was only one person on the suspect list, and if it happened to be that one person, you'd finally be able to carry on with the investigation. Your coworker ran into the room, slamming the door open.

“L/n!? Yeonjun!? Are you both in here!?”

Yeonjun stood up from his chair and walked over to the familiar face, taking them by the shoulders demanding answers, “What's going on!?”

“We don't know! But someone broke into an important representative's home and we don't know who it is or why they broke in!” Your coworker said in a panic, trying his best to keep his voice professional and understandable.

Yeonjun bit his lip in pure frustration, among turning back to your coworker he shoved them out of the way and went to the front of the station, you speed walked forward, nodding and thanking your coworker for the alert, following Yeonjun shortly after. You made your way to the front of the station, where you saw the cop cars already parked and ready to be taken out.

You made your way to an assistant who worked closely with Soobin, he normally had information regarding your investigations and crimes, if anyone knew what you were getting yourself into, it was him.

“Wooyoung- what's going on..?” You asked, turning your head to face the man who had been writing on his notepad.

Wooyoung sighed, which wasn't a good sign and it made you quite uneasy, “It's that bad…? Please tell me it isn't…”

“Sorry, but it is pretty bad… I can't really tell you much because of our circumstances-” Wooyoung muttered, as if he was trying to avoid being heard. It was unusual behavior for him because you were already used to his yelling and screaming. Tilting your head in confusion you looked around before feeling your head automatically get snatched back.

“What the heck is wrong with you!?”

“Don't look around too much-” Wooyoung whispered in an aggressive tone which made your head turn fully to him, you watched Yeonjun get into the car and look over at you. His way of telling you “Hurry up!” Telepathically.

“Woo- what's going on!?”

He interrupted you before you could finish your sentence, pulling you down and practically squeezing your faces together.

“Whatever you do, don't talk loudly, if you're gonna communicate with someone do it privately and make sure you're alone. Always stay with someone- don't split up when you get inside of that mansion… and lastly, don't tell anyone I told you this”

You glanced over at Wooyoung, worry filling every corner of your expression as you attempted to put the pieces together, you gulped and muttered a small, “Why..?”

Wooyoung pulled you closer and technically whispered in your ear, his voice more stable and clearer than it had ever been…

“We're being watched- both me and you, everyone here is.”

Your gaze quickly shifted up to look at him but he pushed you away forcing you to stay quiet about the situation, you couldn't ask any questions. Not even how he was able to know that sort of information, or where the culprit was hiding.

You clicked open the car door, sitting on the cushion, more nervous and anxious than ever, your sweat was building up on your forehead, eyes watering. Maybe you were against the same criminal as a year ago, but this time he came back as a different person. He came back ready for war, not just a play battle in the park.

Worst part was that you couldn't even question Wooyoung on what he could've possibly meant by his statement, it was more than obvious but there were so many unanswered questions… How could they watch you? Why couldn't you split up upon arriving at the mansion? Why couldn't you talk out loud? What was he protecting… that made him so vague upon revealing his statement? Was it you and everyone else in the station…? Or was it perhaps someone else..?

Arriving at the mansion, you walked in with Yeonjun and a few other cops who accompanied you to the property, it was far too big and far too dangerous for just two people. Although Wooyoung would normally come and stay outside during these types of situations, he was strictly told to stay back this time so unfortunately he couldn't make it.

“I have a very bad feeling about this…”

You muttered almost to yourself, keeping Wooyoung's words in mind. Although you were still outside, you made sure to keep quiet in case everything he told you was indeed true… and if it was, you didn't want to risk the chances of being heard.

“Okay everyone, we're going all going to split up”

“We can't split up!” You quickly yelled, startling everyone who was there, even Yeonjun couldn't believe the words that came out of your mouth. Silence filled the air for a split moment before Yeonjun spoke.

“Why can't we split up..? It's a big mansion, traveling together would just take too long.”

You bit your lip for a moment, you had never been told to stay with a certain group during these types of investigations, normally you always split up to make the case go by faster and more accurately. Moving individually would allow each person to go to a separate area of a building and examine it carefully, more spaces would be done in a shorter period of time, meaning more time to be spent on the actual investigation. However, Wooyoung's warnings couldn't go to waste, he spent time and he knew what was safer, all you could do was take his word for it, no questions to be asked.

“We should just travel with two or one other person, be in groups of two or three…”

Words couldn't explain your disappointment in yourself, you felt like a complete idiot trying to stay within a specific group. You guessed Yeonjun caught on to what you were doing as his opinion immediately changed upon analyzing you closer.

“You know what- I think she's right, we should most likely move in small pods. This is not like any other case, we're talking about long lost criminals here. They've spent a long time on hiatus, I doubt they've just been laying on their couch and eating chips throughout that period of time.”

You couldn't be more thankful for his words, you couldn't have explained it better yourself. Upon seeing eyes becoming fixed on you, all you could do was nod in agreement. Allowing everyone to understand you and where you were coming from.

“Alright, we'll travel in pods, Y/n you'll go with Yeonjun.”

Nodding and sighing in relief, you made your way to the car and prepared yourself to enter the mansion. It was a normal looking mansion from the outside, but something about it just seemed so eerie… so quiet… a little too quiet.

“Someone's in there.” Yeonjun said from behind you, you turned around and noticed him organizing all of his firearms, taking out a small taser and placing his hand in the correct arrangement.

Looking back at the building, you nodded, mainly glad that he could sense it too. You had a strong feeling that someone was in there, however you thought you were just being exaggerated or traumatized, hearing Yeonjun confirm it only made you more uneasy.

The two of you walked over to the main entrance of the building, wiggling the lock only to realize it had been locked. Yeonjun escorted you silently over to the back door, which was located all the way on the other side of the property. You checked the windows that you walked past to check if any of them had been left unlocked.

As expected, upon arriving at the back door you found it locked, luckily the window next to it happened to be open, allowing you to slip it open and remove the mosquito net. Jumping in and actually being inside felt straight out of a horror movie. You felt as if you were a teenager walking right into a crime scene, smelling the scent of blood from the bottom floor. All you could do was hold your nose and signal Yeonjun to do the same and stay quiet.

Both of you knew this wasn't like any ordinary crime scene, something had actually happened here and you knew it. You walked over to your assigned explore area and began walking around, you had gotten further from the crime since on this side the smell had faded, no longer having the obnoxiously strong scent hitting your nose.

Yeonjun uncovered his nose and walked over to you, getting closer than he had been before, and speaking. “What did that jerk of Wooyoung tell you this time?” The quiet scenario caused him to lower his volume level, of course, once it's quiet it's easier to keep it that way. You both needed to be on high alert for any noises that didn't come from either of you or the other cops.

“He didn't tell me anything, he just told me that the case was pretty dangerous and to be very careful upon arriving here. The tone he said it in made me a bit uneasy I guess.” You responded, making sure to come out as inaudible as possible.

“You sure? You seem so quiet after whatever he told you.” Yeonjun re-questioned. If you were being real, it made you anxious that he somehow overheard you and Wooyoung's conversation, you erased the thought and turned on your best acting skills. You really wanted to tell Yeonjun everything Wooyoungs had told you, however Wooyoung clearly stated “don't tell anyone.” So therefore you couldn't.

“Yeah, you know how loud Wooyoung is… while we spoke he was so quiet so it frightened me. He didn't tell me much about what was happening, he just told me it's best to stay together.” You weren't sure if what you told him was okay, but you just assumed it was and brushed it off.

Yeonjun stayed quiet, you could hear his footsteps behind you as you entered the main room inside of the mansion. You heard Yeonjun shut the door behind you which had you questioning his behavior, but you didn't say anything about it, you brought your flashlight to one corner where you discovered a notebook.

What a huge piece of evidence…

“Yeonjun! Look at this!”

Suddenly you felt an arm be wrapped around your neck, applying hard pressure onto it cutting all your airways. You gasped for air as you started to wiggle yourself out of the tight grip, successfully escaping their arm.

You took out your gun and held it straight at the man, “Yeonjun, whose side are you on?” You muttered, one hand to your weapon and the other to your neck, still struggling to breathe properly as your hand held the firearm.

Silence was the only thing that was heard, this was when you realized… this wasn't Yeonjun.

The man in front of you was far too tall to be Yeonjun, he wasn't talking, and the most obvious, you could tell that even in the dark, he wasn't wearing a police uniform.

You glanced around the room, noticing your flashlight on the ground beside you, you reached out your foot to reach the object before feeling a heavy amount of force grip onto your shoulder and kick the flashlight away.

The figure pushed you onto the wall and held you in place, tilting their head to investigate you. You held your gun even closer to them, putting it against the man’s head, you never realized until now, but you knew who this man was.

He was the one and only, Mastermind…

“Looks like you finally decided to show up again after you chickened out of our last fight..?” You muttered, struggling to breathe as he had a hand lightly gripped around your neck. Not enough to block your airways but enough to make you struggle to speak

The man chuckled lightly, making you be on defense, you put your gun against his wrist, slightly pushing the trigger. You didn't have intentions to shoot him, but you needed to keep your palm tight and ready for any emergencies.

He slightly pushed on your neck tighter, you gasped for air as you attempted to pull away his arm from squeezing your neck too hard.

“You plan on just killing me right now…? Just like that…?” You said, feeling his gaze move up to your eyes as he released his hand. You quickly got in position but weren't fast enough, he was already running out of the room and into the hallway.

“Come back here!” You yelled, running as fast as you could in order to catch up to him. You were athletic, but whoever you were against was fast, he wasn’t an ordinary runner like most people… he ran and no matter how hard you tried, you just couldn't catch up.

Finally, you managed to get close enough to him, pushing him onto the wall and holding his hands in place, gun to his head.

“Tell me… what reason do you have to kill all these innocent people?”

He responded with silence, confused until you finally heard a response. A chuckle, small low chuckle… he was laughing at the victims!? How heartless could he be to do such a thing? You pressed the gun closer to his head before you finally received a response-

“You think the people I kill are innocent? I do more work than you cops…”

Anger filled your veins, “What connection do you have with your victims!?” You repeated, this time louder than the first.

“Listen, the connections I hold with the so-called ‘victims’ is none of your business.” He responded. Infuriated, you screamed, “Tell me!”

He was messing with you, and it angered you… much more than anyone could imagine. He ruined your life and now he was making fun of you? How entitled could he get? You were about to snap before he spoke.

“Your father… I took him because of his own mistakes.” he muttered, silent, you asked, “Where is my father?” he laughed for a moment before answering.

“You don't deserve to know where he is, I'll keep him until I'm ready to release him.” Your eyes become wider as you grew scared. This was the same man who was capable of murder, torture and possibly more. This man had your father and there was nothing you could do about it.

So deep in thought, you didn't even realize he slipped out of your in-tightening grip, and ran, you only noticed when you saw him run and shatter the glass window, taking his leave before you could even chase after him…

You were so stupid if you thought you'd catch someone like the Mastermind so easily, his plan since the beginning was to make a fool out of you in order to manipulate you once more, and you fell for it.

What a scumbag.

“Y/n? There you are!” You heard, coming up behind you, you turned around and saw Yeonjun running up to you and bending down, checking every side of you carefully and cautiously.

“What happened!? We heard another voice here! You told us not to split up!!” Yeonjun reinderated, you looked up at him and nodded, agreeing.

“I know I did but… I guess I just wandered off at the end.”

Yeonjun noticed your expression, he knew something had just happened, and whatever it was, you didn't want to talk about it. The other cops continued to ask you questions about the situation and your well-being, but Yeonjun stopped them. Grabbing your arm and lifting you up.

“I think you should get some sleep, the rest of us will take care of the investigation.” You denied the offer and started walking back but Yeonjun took you by the arm and brought you to the car, instructing you to head home and wishing you a goodnight rest.

You didn't want to leave just like that, but Yeonjun was right… you just wanted to sleep for the rest of the day and get back at it tomorrow, so you just did as told and went home for the day.

But that didn't mean you were done working for the day.

So you sat on your rolling chair which had been next to your desk, computer open with your notebook turned to the next blank page which now had loads of writing on it.

“If they stay around this certain area then that would mean that they are either really close or really far…” you sketched a picture of a small map and circled the highlighted area, you then turned to your computer and went to search the location, you input the address into the search bar, and waited for your results. When they came up you scrolled and scrolled, but everything seemed to just lead you back to a dead end.

Until that article…

Barging into the station early in the morning, you immediately stormed over to Yeonjun’s office and slammed open the door. Notebook ready in hand , finger separating the pages and placed inside the one you wanted to show him.

“Yeonjun!”

“Good morning to you too Y/n.”

Rolling your eyes, you opened up your notebook and we're about to slam it onto his desk, you had been rehearsing how this was gonna go since you woke up and we're brushing your teeth, finishing off the finishing touches as you drove to the station.

You were ready to say everything that you had taken the time to script, writing it down in a long lost document that laid in your brain and was just waiting to be reused, you ended up apologizing for having the wonderful invention of a notebook in your arms and no longer needing the free one that was almost like an application.

Taking in your huge breath and getting prepared to completely destroy your vocal chords-

“Choi Yeonjun? L/n Y/n? Oh good that I found you both- our boss Choi Soobin wants to see you two.”

And… of course. Someone had to interrupt your main character moment, just as you were preparing to get the top police rank and receive a promotion to- what a bummer.

Yeonjun laughed as he looked back at you and shrugged, “oh well, guess you gotta tell me later.” He responded, getting up from his chair as he made his way to the door and held it open for you. You sighed in disappointment and thanked him, carrying your shoulders low at the missed opportunity.

You both went to the main office, where you found some other cops on shift also gathered and discussing. You glanced at Yeonjun in confusion, but it was clear he was just as confused as you were since these types of situations were uncommon in your station.

Finally, Soobin came over and spoke, “I know that this was a very uncalled for situation, however recently we have discussed with the head chief for a few weeks on end and have come to a very sudden conclusion.”

Hearing the mumbles of the few cops who were present, they waited for Soobin to complete his sentence yet gathered up in their small little friend groups in order to discuss their theories on what was happening.

You yourself leaned a bit closer to Yeonjun, “You think someone used the bathroom too hard causing the bathrooms to go under forbidden restrictions again?” You whispered, making Yeonjun snort as he recalled the time that actually happened, he quickly cleared his throat and went back to serious mode upon the presence of Soobin who had been glancing around at the police who were there.

“We have come to the conclusion that we would accept a new cop in the station who studied overseas and graduated from a top law school.”

Mumbles were heard among the entire room, almost like the sound of people talking in a stadium after an abrupt silence stops a play, and people around the room start questioning whether the play is over, suddenly everyone went silent upon Soobin placing his finger over his lip.

“Because we have trained him for quite some time, and his grades as well as his resume proved he has enough talent to start as a high rank cop in our station. He will be joining our top tier cops for the time being, Y/n, Yeonjun, he'll be under you both for now, can I trust you with that?”

The room has never been more quiet, the process time between you and Yeonjun, all the eyes were fixed on the two of you, who stayed firmly looking at Soobin. Both of you made eye contact and thought for a moment, however you both knew that neither of you had a good feeling about this.

Yeonjun finally looked back and nodded his head, almost completely removing the worried expression that he had been looking at you with previously.

“Yes, that's fine boss.” Yeonjun responded, you sucked up the feeling and responded back, “We'll take good care of him.”

Soobin smiled and nodded at you both, looking back at the rest of the officers in the room. “Alright then, please introduce yourself.”

Suddenly, another person came out. A guy, maybe around 20 years old, he was tall, almost reaching the height of Soobin, yet not quite there yet. He looked a little frail so you were a bit skeptical on how he could become a cop, especially such a high rank one when he looked so young.

“He looks a bit weak..? Or regular don't you think..?” You whispered over to Yeonjun to which he laughed, making you find yourself looking at him wondering what was so funny.

“You look really weak too, I'd probably trust him more than you to be real here.”

You snapped at him “Shut the hell up, I'm not that weak looking!”

He chuckled, looking upon hearing the man start speaking.

“Hello, I'm Kai Kamal Huening, but I prefer to just be called Huening Kai, if possible Hyuka.” He smiled, voice soft and innocent, a little bit lighter than you had expected.

Some part of you felt weird whenever the youngman introduced himself. However, you weren't exactly sure what you might have felt in that short instant, but whatever it was sent chills down your spine. What you discovered last night and was on the verge of telling Yeonjun should be forgotten, as it was best to keep it to yourself.

You walked down the hallways of the station with Yeonjun, you both had left the conference room and went to the cafeteria to get yourselves a small coffee and snack, so much investigating made you hungry.

“I don't know… I don't really like the new guy.” you muttered, suddenly starting to ramble on why. “I mean like, he probably just lied about studying abroad and in the best law school, like come’on, I also got deja vu hearing his voice. 20ish years old and already accomplished that much? Became a high rank officer? Yeah no.”

Sighing, he responded, “You're probably just jealous because you started out as a lower rank and it took you an eternity to get to where you are now.”

“Oh shut up, you're no one to talk. It took you longer than it took me.” You snapped, making him hiss at you, immediately separating the coffee from his face.

“Well, I still hold the title of the first cop to be considered ‘high rank’ in this station.'' he snapped back, making you both start bickering about whatever came first to your mind. One moment it'd be about your ranks and the next you'd both be throwing punches at each other for that stepped on potato chip that you both remembered you failed to save about a year ago.

Opening the door to the conference room you both had been in, the two of you entered and began walking back angrily to your spots for your tini mini argument that you both happened to have in the hallway.

“You both are back, I've been waiting.” A voice said from the back of the room, sounding like it was getting closer and approaching the discussion table. Making eye contact, you both glanced at the voice which happened to be the face you saw in your nightmares that hadn't even happened yet.

Yeonjun stole the words out of your mouth and unfortunately spoke before you, “If it's not rude, may I ask what you're doing here?” He questioned, looking at Huening Kai, he was annoyed, not specifically at Huening but more at you. (in which you shared the same exact emotions as him)

Hyuka placed a friendly smile, the type that would easily melt someone's heart if done at the right time, and even when it wasn't it was still worth crushing over. It somewhat made you feel some type of way when he smiled so kindly like that, it was also the moment when you realized just how hot this new guy was, he looked like a full on idol, visuals so captivating they left you speechless.

“I don't have a specific reason to be here. But I thought we should get to know each other before anything since we'll be close allies from now on.”

You thought he sounded like a child, he for surely hadn't been speaking like that beforehand.

“Sorry bud, but when you're a high rank officer there's better things to do then get to know each other. We'll just let time do that for us.” You responded, making him look at you once more. Not thinking much about it, you went back to your notebook, purposefully skipping over the page from last night. Yeonjun had been doing some computer work, but you truthfully didn't know what he was doing.

But upon noticing something was wrong, when you realized that he was still looking at you… you turned your head to face him, looking him in the eye for an instant, so little but enough for his expression to completely change.

Because you were sure of it, for a split second after turning your face, you looked into his eyes and saw absolutely zero emotion, no remorse, no light and no sensitivity… pure coldness. Yet the next second, his eyes softened as a smile rounded across his face giving you a slight nod.

Suspiciously turning back with your heart racing, you went back to your notebook before hearing the alarm go off, once more, for the second time that same week, second day in a row. Now this was rare.

Yeonjun got up from his chair, running to the door and slamming it open, you followed behind, stopping to signal Huening to follow you, in which he did. All three of you ran out of the station, seeing the cop cars beginning to line up as they prepared them for you all.

You noticed Wooyoung at the scene, speaking with another worker, but something about Wooyoung was different today. He looked so- tired. So drained of energy, and most outstanding of all, anxious.

Wooyoung nodded at you after he noticed you staring and gave you a small sassy motion of ‘What?” Before making his way to a car, opening up the driver seat and getting inside, closing the door behind him. If you were being serious you were honestly glad that Wooyoung would be accompanying you on this investigation because the previous day had been a complete mess without him. The only time you'd ever say that things were better with Wooyoung around.

You got into the passenger seat of the car with Yeonjun, noticing that Huening had gotten into the backseat of the car, you both made eye contact for a moment before shrugging it off upon seeing Wooyoung start driving to wherever this destination was, making you both follow shortly after.

Pulling into different driveways, you finally arrived a normal looking house with then lights on, you stared in confusion as you checked your phone, looking up the address on your maps and seeing this exact same location.

“I'm confused- if this is just a normal house then why would the alarms go off?” You asked, looking outside your window at the property. You heard Yeonjun shuffling around beside you, preferably getting himself prepared for anything that might've been about to happen.

“Yeah well, if the alarms went off then something went down inside that house.” he said, opening his car door and exiting the vehicle. You turned around and shared a nod with Huening Kai, both of you exiting the car right after Yeonjun and making your way to Wooyoung's car, who had been currently standing next to the door, preparing everything necessary.

“Yeonjun, I need you to go with __ for today. Y/n, you'll be with Huening Kai.” Wooyoung said, putting his notepad under his belt, you stared in shock and looked back at Yeonjun who shared your same reaction, Wooyoung looked at you both and shrugged, “It is what it is.”

“Wait- we don't even know what's going on… can you at least tell us?” You asked, looking back at Huening Kai who had been preparing himself. You should've been kinder with the guy, his first case was gonne be a serious one.

Woo sighed, looking back at you and hesitantly speaking, “Someone dangerous might be in there. The owners escaped but we don't know if the intruder might still be in there.”

You frowned slightly, this was a case of possible ‘secret rooms,’ and you had never been good at finding those. You looked back at Huening Kai who had already been looking down at you.

“Are you good at puzzles? Or finding hidden objects? Spotting the difference games?” You asked, seeing his expression change as he thought about it for a moment, looking back at you ready to answer. “I think I can handle- I'm pretty good at spotting the difference games.”

You sighed in relief and led him to the entrance, which had surprisingly been left open, you started off by turning off the lights, it was better to travel at way as the intruder could've potentially been anywhere, and you had no idea how psychotic he could've possibly been.

Your gaze shifted back to Huening, who had been looking around the hallway you both were walking through, arguably looking for any clues. “Keep your volume low. Don't talk loudly and don't be afraid to walk at normal pace. It's easier to hide your presence if you just walk normally.”

Huening looked back at you and nodded, going back to his check his own investigation, checking everything he possibly could. Walls for any noticable indents or misplacements, shelf's with anything that could indicate a secret passageway, basement stairways, attic latters.

“You’know, you seem off.” You muttered, which one caught his attention and you took note of it. “How so?” He mumbled back, looking back at the walls but with his normal friendly tone completely gone. You knew that his tone always softened around you and Yeonjun, but now that calm voice was gone.

“I can't tell- but you just feel different. It feels like you know what's gonna happen, you seem unfased at our cases like this when you should be the most nervous. It almost seems like you knew this was coming…”

His gaze shifted back to you, having seen it from a mirror which was visible straight ahead, you smirked slightly. His eyes become a glare, that same eyes that he had been attempting to hide prior to the alarms going off.

“You didn't get jump scared at the alarms and I happened to notice you looking down at your wrist quite a lot just a couple of minutes before the alarms sounded, your wrist happens to hold a watch. Almost as if you knew it was about to sound, like if you programmed it yourself.”

He looked into the mirror, seeing you frozen in your tracks and looking back at him, turning yourself around shortly after to make eye contact with him, full body turned to face him.

“So tell me the truth, you're already busted.” Your grip tughtening around in your grip, ready to pull the trigger as your fingers wrapped around the lever that became a do or die situation, hiw head fell down low as he lifted his arms, with a smile on his face as he chuckled on about the situation. You jumped back in surprise and felt your trauma come back to you…

The entire reason you got deja vu upon hearing him for the first time. This was the same man you had seen just a day ago. The same laugh and speech. The thing that triggered your fight or flight mode against him… was all from of his voice.

“Oh that's funny-” he chuckled, catching his breath from the laugh, you glanced around as your felt your arm loosen up against your gun, as they began to sweat.

“If you truly knew what I was up to- you'd know that I was waiting for you to turn around.”

The realization of the trap hit you, but only whenever it was already too late. You felt a blunt amount of force bang against your head, enough to knock you out completely, you slumped back a few steps before falling over completely.

Beomgyu caught you just before you could fall, putting you down lightly as he looked at Kai. “That's what you wanted right…? To knock her out?”

Kai nodded and bended down to look at you, checking your air circulation and bending down to listen to your heart. “Looks like she wasn't smart enough to dodge our game. It's her fault.”

Beomgyu’s expression changed a bit, looking at your unresponsive body, “She's still alive right?”

“Yeah, your hit wasn't fatal, best of all she'll remember everything when she wakes up.”

“I don't think it's good to remember some stranger hitting you in the back of the head with a baseball bat.” Beomgyu added, making Huening roll his eyes.

“You know what I mean.”

Huening ordered Beomgyu to pick you up and escort you out, which Beongyu listened. Bringing you out of the building, Huening following shortly after.

“How could you fall for such an obvious trap being such a clever girl? If anyone needs extra training it's you.”

Opening your eyes and seeing lights above your head, your brain was fuzzy and you felt slight nausea, your eyes took a moment to focus before they were finally able to look around the room at your surroundings.

Immediately reacting upon seeing an unfamiliar setting, one you had never seen before. You felt your heart start beating faster, suddenly finding it hard to breathe as you began to recall everything that happened before you had last all consciousness, you gripped your shirt on your heart side, hearing your racing heart all the way from your ears. Panic beginning to settle in.

The door knob began to twist, opening with a squeak as the door was pulled shut. Your eyes, having been watering, had a hard time focusing on the person who was in front of you, even after you couldn't comprehend where you had heard the voice before. Luckily one thing was for sure, at least it hadn't been Huening Kai…

“I'm glad you're awake, you weren't gone for too long which is lucky. Don't worry your safe, I hope at least.” The voice said, in which you recognized, but couldn't registers whose voice it had been.

“Y/n? Look at me, and lay down.”

A small force had been pushing down your shoulders, which were too tired to push back violating all the rules of science, you laid down on your back and finally had a chance to see who this was.

“Wooyoung? Where are we?”

“The casino.”

“Casino!? Woo, this is illegal you need to arrest everyone here-”

“I can't, someone's already in charge of that.”

“Oh great- is Yeonjun here? I need to speak with him privately about some information I figured out-”

Wooyoung put a finger over your mouth, making you stop talking completely and stare at him confused, seeing him shake his head in disagreement as he disregarded your statement, “There's not use, keep what you found out to yourself Y/n.”

“Wooyoung- you can't be serious. What are you even doing here? How did we get here?”

“I can't explain as of right now.”

You grew annoyed, expresing to him that you weren't in the mood for whatever he was on about. Your gaze made eye contact with Wooyoung- as he figured how to break it. You shook your head in disappointment and rolled your eyes.

“Where's the rest of the team? Let me see them or tell them to come here.” You demanded, to which Wooyoung just shook his head once more.

“You don't understand, I can't-”

“You can't what? Go get them for me?”

“Well if you just let me finish then maybe you'd understand.” Wooyoung glared at you and only then did you realize that this wasn't a joke to him and he was truly being serious. You bowed your head and untensed your shoulders.

“Go on-” you completed, allowing him to continue his sentence. He sighed and shook his head slightly looking around the room.

“Look, I can't contact the others at the moment. They're not here and they don't know where we are. They can't know where we are.” He said as you stared in pure confusion. “Then how are you here..? I got hit in the head really hard and lost consciousness- and you weren't around. So then how did you find me and manage to go unnoticed by the others?” You asked, feeling your heart begin beating faster again as you feared for his response. You prayed that he wouldn't tell you what you thought he would, Wooyoung sighed and scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.

“What I'm about to tell you sounds really bad but please don't panic.”

You kept eye contact with Wooyoung steadily, never once breaking it. “Well when you start a sentence like that, it's enough to get me in a state of panic.” you commented, making Wooyoung chuckle slightly.

“Don't take it like that- I don't have much time so I'll make it quick and vague.”

You nodded and waited for him to continue as he hesitantly took a breath and started speaking, only to be interrupted by Huening Kai entering the room with Taehyun beside him, Wooyoung looked back at them, standing up and bowing. Questioning his behavior as you became too stunned to speak, you stuttered out your words, barely getting them out.

“Woo- Wooyoung! Why!? Why do you bow down to them!? Do you know who they even are!?” You yelled, making Wooyoung turn back at you and shake his head in disapproval regarding your behavior.

“Looks like she finally woke up. Thank you Taehyun, you did a good job taking care of her.” Huening smiled and nodded. Taehyun, who had been looking at you, glanced back at Huening before shifting his gaze back to you, a smile forming on his face as he held a bowl of soup, which was arguably for you.

Huening Kai sat down on the chair Wooyoung had been on, which sat next to your bed where you had been kept. You hadn't noticed previously but only then did you hear the instrumental music which had been heard from outside the room.

“Listen here, if you can be obedient and do what I ask of you, you'll be out of here soon.”

Disgust filled your expression and you looked at him, trying to find the reasoning behind his statement. You glanced back at Wooyoung and Taehyun, who had been looking at you, awaiting your response. “Why should I have to listen to you?” You finally managed to mutter out.

Huening sat back on the chair, swinging it and lifting it off the ground. Arms and legs crossed as he looked above you at the ceiling. “You're stubborn.” He commented, thinking of what he could be a proper response for you as he kept his gaze strong and firm. His eyes were back to that emotionless void that you had seen previously, which somewhat saddened you as well as terrified you.

“Let's see, I don't have plans of killing you, but if it so happens that you tick me off too much then I might as well stain my hands a little.” he said, in a voice so calm and collected that it gave you chills, his head turned back to face you completely with such an innocent stare… truthfully he looked like any regular human being. How could someone talk about murder as if it was an everyday task?

Consequences were always gonna be there and so was karma, but you couldn't help but notice some sort of sincerity in his eyes. Something in you really did tell you that he was being honest, and he truthfully had no intentions of hurting you. So all you could do was nod in response, keeping your head low in disappointment of yourself for being manipulated once more.

He smirked and nodded, getting up from his chair and instructing Taehyun and Wooyoung to follow him. Taehyun turned around, bowing down to you and respectfully leaving the room, Wooyoung however stayed still, looking back at Huening and fidgeting with his fingers.

“If it's okay- I'd like to speak with Y/n. Privately.” He said, making Huening turn around and nod in response, “Just don't say too much.” He added, before escorting himself and Taehyun out of the room.

Immediately shooting your eyes right back to Wooyoung once the door shut, your head shaked in disappointment. “What are you gaining out of this? You betrayed us and now you expect me to reason with you!?”

Wooyoung state clearly disagreed with what you had said, as all he did was stare before shaking his head. “You've got it all wrong- I didn't betray anyone except Huening, I began working with him for investigation purposes. We weren't getting anywhere with his case so the only way to possibly move forward was to side forces with him.”

You didn't respond, simply looking away in disapproval, he knew and nodded, “You have a right to be mad but hear me out… he's not as bad as we make him come off-”

“That man kidnapped my father Wooyoung! That man ruined my everything! And now you're claiming he's not that bad!? How heartless could you be-”

“You don't know the full story Y/n. I know it sounds bad, but if you and the others knew the whole story you'd think the same as me, you're just too quick to judge.”

Leaning back on your bed and watching as Wooyoung got up and left the room. Of course you wouldn't believe him, and you wouldn't until you saw it for yourself and had enough of a reason to know you weren't being played again.

___________

Sitting in what looked to be an interrogation room, although it clearly wasn't. You sat across from Hyuka who had his computer open, he had been silent and hadn't spoken to you for possibly over 10 minutes, so you just sat and waited for him to check in.

Somewhat awkward, you sat and fidgeted with your fingers, attempting to find something to distract yourself from the tense scene you were in, until he finally, at last lifted his head and took a long, exhausted breath.

“Do you know who she is?” He turned his computer around to show you the screen, which held the picture of a woman who appeared to be in her mid 40’s. All you could do was glance back at him and shake your head.

“What business do you have with her? If you tell me a convincing enough story you might be able to pursue me in giving out information about an innocent human being.” You crossed your arms and legs, leaning back on the chair and slightly smirking, trying to get a reaction out of him. He sighed and looked up slightly, thinking of a response.

“Look, I don't plan to harm you, but if you can't do this simple task I might end up having to call someone to take care of you-”

“Why can't you do it yourself?” You immediately interrupted, having a skeptical tone to yourself as you questioned whether this man was actually dangerous in the first place or if he couldn't defend himself, he chuckled automatically knowing what you were thinking.

“I wouldn't hesitate with anyone else, but I could never hit a girl.”

Grinning, and disregarding his words you rolled your eyes, “Well at least you're gentle.” Upon hearing you, he automatically started laughing which got you off guard, making you jump back in surprise as you hadn't heard that side of him. You really hated to admit it but it truly amazed you how attractive this guy could get.

“Listen Ms. Know it all, I have things to take care of so just tell me what you know of her and I'll let you go for now, bring you back when I need you.”

Lifting an eyebrow, you shifted your mouth to one side of your face, making it more apparent on your right cheek. “So you're just gonna admit that you're using someone being that direct about it? Red flag if you ask me.” you teased, motioning as if you could never.

He rolled his eyes, “Listen, I'm not joking, I don't have all day so I'd really appreciate it if you could just tell me what you know of her.”

“If you don't have time then that means i'll only be here until you gotta go right? So then what's the point?”

He shook his head in denial, “Wrong, I have backups who’ll come in and stay with you until they get something out of you.”

“Ugh, you're so persistent-”

He smirked in response, leaning his cheek to his right fist and beginning to play with his pen which sat in his right hand, making small finger turns with it allowing him to spin it around and do a couple of tricks with it.

“It's what I do best.”

Rolling your eyes, you finally spoke up, “Her name is Kim Minju, born in 1982, moved overseas at 8 years old and moved back at 23. Why?” You lifted an eyebrow, immediately making him sit up straight and look at you straight in the eyes.

“What else do you know?”

You sighed and crossed your arms once again, putting your feet on the ground and beginning to swing your chair back and forth. “How do I know I'm not potentially helping you with your next murder?”

He sighed and leaned back on his chair, “I won't deny it cause you are, but if you knew my reasoning, you wouldn't hesitate on telling me everything you know about her.”

Hesitantly, you finally agreed, telling him as little information as you could get away with. You didn't know much about her to begin with, just regular things, you didn't know her address or anything regarding her personal life, however it proved to be enough for Huening and he thanked you and asked you to be taken back to your room.

The guilt of being the reason for why someone was gonna be killed sooner than planned ate you up inside, however you just couldn't stop thinking about those words.

“You don't know the full story Y/n. I know it sounds bad, but if you and the others knew the whole story you'd think the same as me”

“But if you knew my reasoning, you wouldn't hesitate on telling me everything you know about her.”

It really got you thinking, who was in the wrong, was it you or him? Even Wooyoung, someone who had worked in the station for as long as you and Yeonjun believed that this was truly the right thing. So what was going on behind the scenes?

The door slammed open, catching you off guard and nearly making you jump out of your skin.

“Hello!!!!”

Hand on your heart and breathing heavily you stared at the handsome man who was awkward standing in the fronts of your room, tall and slim figure with chocolate brown hair, you gulped to see him still smiling with a bowl of ramen in his hands, he was frozen and staring at you almodt as if uou clicked the pause button.

“Um… hello..?” You responded, snapping him out of the cloud nine, making him approach you with a friendly smile.

“May I ask who you are…?” You asked, trying to keep your voice respectful as he grabbed the lap desk that had been in-between your bed and side table, placing in on your lap and putting the plate over it.

“Am I aloud to say my name?” He yelled, causing you to lift an eyebrow as you questioned who he was talking to. You saw the same guy from earlier walk by the room, stopping at the entrance and leaning against the door frame.

“I mean I guess so. She knows Hyuka’s name and probably knows mine, so go ahead.” He responded, making the previous guy turn back to face you with his friendly smile back.

“Then I'm Choi Beomgyu, nice to meet you, I was the one who knocked you out with a baseball just in case you didn't know.”

You couldn't help but snort at the add on, noticing the other guy’s eyes widen and stare straight a Beomgyu as if he wasn't supposed to say that.

“I like the confidence, You say it as if it was an honor, I like that.”

He nodded and looked back at Taehyun giving you the best of the best, “Well, since you recently woke up, what would you like to drink? Any deserts or allergies we should be aware of?”

Chuckling, you responded, “I like the 5 Star Restaurant service. I'd just like some water, I should hydrate after Mr. Choi Beomgyu smacked me in the head with a baseball bat. Gotta make sure I don't get a concussion.” You shrugged, automatically making him smile and walk out of the room. You shaked you head thinking about how silly the entire interaction was, looking back at your bowl and doing a few couple checks to confirm the food hadn't been poisened, noticing every single one showed the food was safe, you were still skeptical, but you were hungry so you ultimately decided to eat.

Beongyu came back with Taehyun, holding your glass of water. You thanked them and continued eating. One outstanding fact that made you uncomfortable, was the fact that the two of them took a seat on two chairs which were around the room. You thought they would just drop off the food but both remained still and unmoving.

“Um, excuse me… do you need something?” You brought yourself to ask in a low tone, feeling your stomach begin to swirl in a worry. They both shared a similar expression which was hard to read, but it could be the best described as just, pity. Nothing more, but pure pity.

“Why are you guys looking at me like that…?”

They didn't answer, they just kept staring until eventually they glanced at each other and Taehyun sighed. “I think I'm gonna go- it's a bit quiet now.”

Beomgyu nodded as he himself also stood up. Assuming he was gonna leave, you looked back at your food, noticing Taehyun's feet go out of sights but Beongyu’s stop right outside of your view of vision. You looked back up to see him looking at you again, a little taken back when he saw you stare at him directly in the eyes.

After some time of looking at the floor, he lifted his head to meet your eyes again.

“Hyuka isn't the bad guy here-”

You tsk’d at the situation you found yourself in once again, Beomgyu looked back at you and brought his eyebrows down low, he was worried.

“Yeah well- Wooyoung said that to.”

Beomgyu kept his eye contact with you as he saw your eyes beginning to water.

When you were young, your father was the only rope of support for you. Having grown up in an isolated mountain far from the city, you spent most of your time at home. You knew that being a single parent was difficult on your father, that's why you barely spent time with him. He was always at work and when he came home he was tired, so you just let him be.

Most of your childhood was spent at school and with your father, so it was no wonder that you were confused when you woke up to see your dad gone and no where to be found inside the house. He had never come back, and only then did the investigation team come to inform you of his disappearance.

That was it… the most important person in your life? Gone in a snap of a finger. And if there was anything you regretted the most in life, it was not being there for him when he had done that exact thing for you. Starting you career as an officer, you went in with the thought that your father had just abandoned you, the stress of parenting had gotten to him, and he left. But if there was really a chance that he had been captured, you wanted to find him, even if his bones were the last thing remaining.

“It's true-” he responded, making you look back up at him, seeing his sincere eyes. “You'll understand soon- Just be patient.”

Grip tightening onto the blanket in which you laid under, frustration becoming visible from your veins.

“Everyone says that- I've waited for my dad for over a decade. Haven't I been patient enough? I just want to see my father, dead or alive.”

You couldn't keep your tough figure, you burst into tears the very next moment. Beomgyu patted your back, making you jump in surprise to his comfort. But you needed a shoulder to cry on, even if that meant it had to be an enemy's.

Before he exited the room, he turned to you.

“You'll see him soon, he's not dead- but I can't promise he'll stay like that for too long.”

However, you were crying too much that all you could do was nod. You had so much on your mind that you wanted to say, but unfortunately couldn't

Held at gun point, finger pressed roughly against the trigger. Huening pointed the gun right at the head of a man, who was tied to the chair.

“That's enough joking around don't you think? Hurry, I don't have your time.” Huening muttered, in a low pitch voice, short and monotone, yet haunting and threatening.

“I'm not asking for much- I'll pay you! I promise but just let me go!” The other voice said, making Huening Kai press the gun closer to him, earning a small sound from the man. However Huening felt no remorse, neither did he plan to back down. Not now when he had someone like him so close.

“I don't need that stupid money. You committed your crimes and now you must pay for them, understood?”

The man nodded once again, pressing his hands together tightly and squeezing his eyes shut, fearing for his life.

“I'll pay you everything I owe! You just didn't allow me to gather all of the required money-”

Before he could finish, Taehyun and Beomgyu intruded into the scene, both standing at the doorway upon noticing what had been going down. Beomgyu laughed awkwardly as Taehyun let out a friendly smile to the man who was being held hostage, both turning to face Hyuka, the first outstanding feature being the glare on his face.

“What did I saw about walking into these situations-?”

“I apologize, but there's a serious manner we need to discuss prior to this-” Taehyun stated, making Huening roll his eyes in annoyance.

“Forget it- let's just discuss it here.”

A 3rd voice which didn't belong to Beomgyu approached from behind, making them all turn around in shock. Wooyoung had been coming towards the door and witnessed the scene himself.

Huening chuckled lightly, looking back at the victim and pressing his hand up to his neck.

“Listen, I don't want to take this further, let's end this here.”

Wooyoung shook his head, “I deserve to know. Why kill people?” He firmly stated, feeling his adrenaline rush upon neglecting Huening Kai. Not many people had done so, and those who had didn't end well.

Huening Kai nodded in approval after a brief moment of processing the neglection.

“Murder, gambling, abuse, and identity theft.”

Wooyoung tilted his head in confusion. About to speak, before he was interrupted by Huening Kai once again. Making him shut his mouth a listen to every word, investigate and overanalyze everything that came out from his mouth.

“Those are all things this man is guilty of, not only that but also the abandoning of his own child. Does that sound okay to you? Like someone who deserves to live? This man hasn't killed anyone in over 7 years, but if anyone believes that he's willing to change they're dead wrong.”

Taehyun and Beomgyu stayed quiet, looking straight up front and locked on Huening, Wooyoung tilted his head and sighed. He was right all along and he knew it, you probably did as well but refused to believe so.

Beomgyu turned to face Taehyun and nodded, turning back to face Huening Kai before taking in a deep breath.

“We promised her- we promised her that she'd see her father again…”

He only pressed the firearm closer to the man's head, “You promised who?”

“The girl… L/n Y/n”

Hyuka sighed in half disappointment and half disbelief, looking at the man and biting his lip in part confusion on what would be his next approach. “How could you make a promise that wasn't destined to be fulfilled!?”

“Listen, I know he's a bad person but- if there's anyone who deserves closure on this situation it's her, she's waited for a long time and I think it's about time we let her speak to her father again… in person! Alive and face to face!”

Huening knew he was right, but he didn't want accept it. You speaking to your father would only complicate the situation furthermore, you'd be in a state of denial if you heard what your father did. Becoming a police to find him only to realize that he was also on the other side… destined for hell.

“Is my daughter here..?” the man asked, voice rough and croaky. Huening sighed and lifted himself from his chair, walking back to the door to pick up a bottle of water, shoving it into Taehyun's arms as he walked out the door.

“Give him some water and feed him something. When he's done bring Y/n in so she can speak with Mr. L/n and watch them closely, make sure the truth slips out of his mouth.”

Taehyun's jaw dropped in shock to Kai’s statement. To say he was in disbelief was an understatement because right now he was in disbelief. Something in Huening opened and made him feel pity for your situation and well being, he finally did the right thing and would allow you to speak with your father once more.

“You got it.” Taehyun responded, bringing the man the water and allowing him to drink it, ordering Beomgyu to go pick up the food in order to feed him a healthy meal.

You heard a knock in the other side of the room, looking at the piece of wood to see the door knob slowly turning and the door creaking open. Taehyun, stood in the door step holding and glass of water, presumably for you.

“I have some news for you- but you're going to need to drink this first.”

Blinking your eyes, you stayed frozen and stared at him. “What if the news are something like ‘you’re gonna die in 2 hours’ and when they investigate they'll say it's from poisoning..?” you teased.

He grinned, “Funny, if we wanted to do something to you we would've done so a long time ago.” he responded, you shrugged and took the water from his grip, running a few safety checks before taking a sip and thanking him.

“Anyways what?”

“We're going to let you see your father, I'll take you to him after you finish your glass of water.”

You paused, looking back down at the water which you ruled out as safe, immediately looking back at the young man in pure fear, eyes shaking. “Okay- wait- is this actually poisoned?” You asked, seeing him roll his eyes.

“I'm being serious!” You added, not noticing much of a change in his expression, in a matter a fact he looked even more frustrated. “No, it's not poisoned, now chill out and just drink your water, if not the deals off.”

Hurrying, you drank up you water noticing him take a seat, it was a bit difficult since you were still a bit full from lunch earlier, “I'm a bit confused… why am I suddenly allowed to see him after all this time?”

“Cause it's a promise. Hyuka doesn't break promises.”

“But your boss wasn't-”

“But Beomgyu made you that promise. It doesn't matter who made it, if it's a promise then it's a promise that needs to be kept.”

You stayed silent, remembering Wooyoung's words about this guy who everyone called “Huening Kai.” Maybe he really wasn't as bad as everyone made him seem. Maybe he truthfully did have a reason for killing?

You really hated how you could never figure out the puzzle to all of these guys. Were they the villains or the heroes? Which side were they on? What reason did they have for killing? You didn't have enough time to think about these things because sooner or later, you arrived at the front doors of a dimly lit hall. The room on the other side appeared to have decent lighting.

“Is he in here..?” You found yourself asking, to which Taehyun nodded, moving his arm to the door and staying behind you, turning the door knob and sliding the door open.

There you saw a man, around his 60’s, tied up to a chair with a table sitting next to him. Automatically spotting the knife which sat on the side, noticing it being a safe distance away from the man. Beomgyu was also in the room.

He lifted his head, you almost couldn't recognize him. He had changed so much, he looked so worn out, tired, every negative word you could think of. But this was him- it was truly your father who had gone missing 12 years ago.

You walked up to the chair and looked at you dad in the face, Taehyun moved closer to Beomgyu, both watched from the sidelines.

“Dad, what happened? Why are you here? Why did you leave? What's wrong? Why do you look like this!?”

He shook his head lightly, he did that when he tried to reassure you everything was okay.

“I made a mistake… many years ago. And I don't think I can recover from it.”

“No, dad! You did nothing wrong, what happened?”

You could see a couple of tears forming in his eyes, “My little girl has grown up so much, I heard you became a cop. Good job, your mom would've been so proud of you.”

“Dad, stop talking like that, tell me! What's wrong!?” You responded, feeling your own tears streaming down your face, staring at this man who had once been the human version of the sun, it hurt so much to see him in this state. Your cheeks burned and your ears turned bright red.

“Please don't panic Y/n. But I fear that me and you are no longer fighting for the same rights.”

You froze in place, all time stopped. He couldn't mean what you thought, could he? What was his intention? He was mistaken wasn't he? What was on his mind? What were these rights he mentioned?

“Dad! What are you saying!?”

“Please don't call me ‘father’ anymore, someone like you shouldn't carry this shame of being related to someone like me.”

“Stop talking like this.”

“Y/n, please live well-”

“Stop talking like this!”

“I don't want you to suffer anymore. Just know that I had always been in the wrong, I have committed a crime in which I can not be forgiven for.”

“Dad! That's not true!”

“Y/n, I have murdered someone before… not just one person but multiple, more than once, I have taken the life of innocence.”

You stood in shook, taking multiple steps back. You felt played… spending so long looking for this one man, only for him to have been with the other team, that team that found joy in the suffering of others, and all you could do was wonder… ‘Why? Why me?’

The amount of years you spent in dedication to this one human being, only to realize that he was also your enemy. You felt betrayed, and all you could do was scream. Scream and yell in anger and frustration. You felt were betrayed and more than once. What a pity life.

Taehyun and Beomgyu took you away from the man. What a coward to keep his head down and not even look you in the eye, not even once throughout the time you had been being escorted out.

You passed Huening Kai on your way out, he had been making his way in, and only then did you realize the truth. Only then did you remember the knife, only then did you realize what that man's last memories would've been.

You fell onto the floor in the hallway, crying, sobbing, and throwing your hands in the air. Denial was overtaking all feelings as you saw Beomgyu and Taehyun looking at each other then back at you, that same expression of pity on their faces.

“Don't look at me like that-” you managed to stutter out, making them both apologize, bowing in respect and taking you to the room.

“I can't believe it… how the heck did I never know.”

Taehyun sighed and looked at Beomgyu.

“He's the ghost doctor killer.” Beomgyu hesitantly responded, “You know of him, but since he's an anonymous killer you had no idea.”

You only cried louder, “So many years for this to happen. What did I ever do to deserve this?”

Beomgyu patted your back, trying to comfort you, “You didn't do anything.”

You cried, and the two of them were there all along until you asked them to leave. But you realized, they listened to you, they heard you and comforted you. You may have realized something that you hadn’t beforehand. Or maybe you just refused to,

But they weren't bad people, they never were. They had always been friendly and kind to you, you always tricked yourself into believing otherwise.

“That was the end of that, memories from that night are distinct, I truthfully don't remember much after I fell asleep, all my memory is foggy, and faint-”

Yeonjun lifted an eyebrow, starting directly at you with his tongue clicking with the roof of his mouth, he looked down at the papers and went through a couple.

“You just remember your father's confession before he had been killed by Huening Kai?”

You nodded slightly, seeing his expression change. You stared awkwardly, picking up a few papers as he crossed out a few cases, the old school ones.

“Seriously, we were looking into the wrong people at the worst times. What type of cops are we?” Yeonjun joked, trying to lighten up the mood.

You chuckled and nodded, noticing him get up and make his way to the door. “I'm gonna go make us a coffee, I'll get you that donut that you really like, I'll meet you in the conference room.”

You immediately picked yourself up from the chair and nodded, “Won't you need help though? I can accompany you!”

“No I'm good, go meet the others, I'll be there soon.” He smiled, making you loosen up a little, nodding and walking across the hall, deep in thought and reiterating all the trauma that had been on your mind lately.

“Hey! Why the long face?”

You turned around and smiled softly, you had wanted to see him for a while now, it was nice to have more people on missions other than just you and Yeonjun.

“Damn it Hyuka, you always make me smile at the worst times.”

“It's written on this list of rules to being your boyfriend” he responded, extending an imaginary paper of apparent rules that he was supposed to follow, which just made you laugh harder than you wanted to.

He smiled and walked close to you, you examined him up and down, smirking. “I never noticed how hot you look in that police uniform-”

He looked down at the outfit and stroke a pose, “I know right~” he responded sassily, caressing his hair just to get another laugh from you, which of course worked.

“I’m grateful that you joined us and we got everything sorted out. It had been a while with just me and Yeonjun so having more people feels nice.”

Huening nodded as you approached the door to the conference room, he opened the door for you and you thanked him, entering and taking a seat.

“You guys are too lovey dovey and you just started dating!”

“For real- get a room…”

“Come’on y'all, be a bit more supportive!” You yelled back, making Beomgyu laugh hysterically, causing Taehyun to hit him jokingly, Huening sat down in between them making them both be quiet, “Calm down- we're not at home.”

They nodded and continued laughing.

“So what's the discussion today Ms. L/n Y/n??” Taehyun spoke, earning a chuckle from you. You got out a folder and started talking, Yeonjun coming in shortly after with Wooyoung, bringing in the coffees and two donuts.

“Hey! What about us!?” Beomgyu whined, making Yeonjun smirk as he sat next to you. “Only me and Y/n are worthy of these donuts.”

Everyone burst out laughing, Soobin then entered the room, quieting everyone down as all of you took the chance to relax.

“I called you all here but I'll be going shortly, firstly I wanted to discuss what our next case will be. Fortunately, this will be a relatively simple one compared to others we've taken on. Of course, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Huening, this will be your first case as full on officers in our station, but because you all are experienced I won't worry too much about you guys. You three just do things your way and remember to stay with the others.”

And so you discussed, a group of people who were robbing good's from other's property and also places that do relatively well considering the amount of money earned. You heard and knew this would be a laid back case, making you and Yeonjun smirk at each other knowingly.

“Well looks like our new guys will need a little bit of our help-” Yeonjun spoke, in a teasing manner, making Wooyoung snort from the back of the room, you turned around to face Soobin, and smirked, a smirk he recognized all too well.

“Chief, we might as well make these guys carry around little toy guns, make sure they don't accidentally kill someone-”

“Hey! Let's not go there-” Taehyun responded, Beomgyu turned away, making his facial expression and actions all too exaggerated as he played to be in disbelief. Huening Kai simply chuckled remembering the good old times.

Shaking his head, everything became a background noise as you entered a deep state of thought.

You finally understood, these guys weren't evil, they weren't looking for war. They were simply trying to help you and your team. You guys invested too much time into the wrong people and you had learned to accept that this trio was always one step ahead of you. Maybe this was for the best, helping each other would mean a better and safer economy.

Because even though there was two seperate methods… at least there had always been one goal.
