NADIA LISITSA was the thunder and lightning that terrorized Ketterdam. The accompaniment of rain and the darkness. The thundering clap that scared children at night. She was a force that swirled around in the shadows and hid in them, only catching the glint of silver from her katana or the golden crow head on her dagger that was stashed on her right thigh and the glittering silver individual sequin from her navy blue scarf that covered half her face and her curled hair. Jesper Fahey was one of her first few friends in Ketterdam after being trapped in the White Rose. Although she was treated better than the girls in the Menagerie, she still hated being there because people treated her like trash for looking like a Shu Han despite growing up in Ravka.
All her life she was treated like that wherever she went. Jesper didn’t see her like the other people of Ravka or Ketterdam thought of her, he saw her as a girl who was tired of being treated like trash and so she hid within the darkness and lurked and terrorized those people. Besides her hard exterior, he saw a gentle girl who was hurt and abandoned and alone. At one point in one of their meetings, she saved him from a guy who was furious at him for stealing. Seeing her skills of fighting and the pipe she swung around perfectly, the Zemeni boy told his boss about her.
The night she met Kaz Brekker was a rainy night in Ketterdam. She was walking home from working at the parlour and he spoke up from a corner near to where she stayed. Unknowingly, he watched over her, watching and observing her every move. He saw that she can move swiftly and quietly from the way she carried herself when walking, he saw her katana and how she moved like the flow of a river with it.
Despite not knowing each other and having only met once, he was willing to pay her indenture from Onkle Felix and have her be a part of the Dregs. One of his Crows. One night, he promised that he’ll pay her off and have her work in the Crow Club. And he did. She now resided in the club with Kaz and Jesper, working as a barmaid and guard as well as gaining information. Kaz gave her a dagger with a crow head on the hilt he had gifted her after joining as well as a new leather belted saya (sheath) for her katana that will be placed on her back like a bag instead on her hip. She gained a new title among the Barrel, the Vixen.
After being a month with Kaz and Jesper, Nadia was walking back from her missions until she felt a lingering stare near Tante Heleen’s brothel. There she discovered one of the girls, a Suli girl named Inej Ghafa. A year younger than her, but she was quiet as a mouse. No one couldn’t hear her and even Nadia couldn’t the first time, but she noticed. She had seen her lurking about and Nadia had learned that she was skilled at getting information for Heleen, skilled with the daggers.
And so Nadia went back to Kaz and told him of a girl who was short and small enough to hide from people and can get information. That was the day Kaz approached Heleen. Where Inej had heard him. Where he got Inej to work for him and pay her indenture, and so Inej became a part of the Dregs. There, it started the friendship between Inej and Nadia. There, the Wraith was introduced in the Barrel.
A couple months had passed after Inej had joined the Crows, Nadia was being sent by Kaz to Novokribirsk and steal jewelleries as Inej was unable to leave Ketterdam because of Heleen. She wanted to free Inej from the brothel. Kaz and Nadia were doing everything to free her from the Menagerie and so the Bastard of the Barrel sending the Ravkan girl to Novokribirsk was a way to get more money for them.
Walking about the city she saw vendors, fruits, vegetables, and jewellery around. Being sneaky, she took a couple of jewels and rings and wallets and watches left and right with a few fake smiles and sweet words. Though some seemed to spat at her for her Shu Han looks. She was doing well and was about to leave until she was caught. Saints, she thought as she started to run. Jumping over wooden boxes and ducking under fences to get away. Her panting was the only thing she was hearing by the time she got to the edge of a forest.
She successfully got away from them until someone grabbed her from behind, feeling a hand going around her waist holding her there. She grunted and tried to get out of the grip her captor had on her. She suddenly slammed her head back causing her captor to let go of her. She screamed as she tried to pull away from them and tried to reach for her dagger or katana by her side. She felt a knife on her leg and she let out a screamed pain from the cut that was made. She gained strength back and fought until a sudden light from her hands went towards her captor and she fell unconscious.
Nina Zenik finished walking about Novokribirsk and was already in her room until she heard a thundering clap behind the room she was staying in. She went out to her balcony to see flashes of silver white light in the woods. Her eyes widened, it can’t be. She began to run towards the source of white light and saw a young Shu Han girl fighting a couple of guards. She was good at fighting, she had to give her that. But what was concerning and amazing to her was the little electricity currents going through the Shu girl and dancing around her body. She knew the girl hadn’t noticed her change with also the white light that she was giving off.
Nina watched as the girl knocked out two more men with the butt of her katana. She was doing well, until she was tackled and pinned down on the forest ground. Nina was about to help her, but was interrupted with a lightning strike towards the girl’s captor. Her eyes watched in astonishment, it was her. The girl fell unconscious after her fight with her captor, lying still on the ground. Nina didn’t hear a heartbeat from him and she knew he was dead.
With strength she had, she caught sight of two more men who were advancing towards the girl. She stepped out and held her arms up, her hands in a triangle shape with her index fingers, middle fingers, and her thumbs up. She waved her hands delicately and slowed their hearts.
Nina walked towards the Shu girl and heard her slow heartbeat meaning she was asleep. She was still breathing. Grabbing the katana and putting it back to where her saya is, she placed the dagger back to the girl’s thigh holster. She saw a cut on the right thigh and she slowed the blood flow from her thigh to keep it from bleeding more blood out. She would need to patch it up first before continuing the normal blood flow through her leg.
Hoisting the girl up, she dragged her towards the inn and up to her room where she’ll be kept safe until she sends a letter to her General and be ordered with her instructions. The girl’s dagger was taken by her and kept in her luggage so the younger assassin couldn’t reach it and attack her if she was ever to wake up. Nina smiled, she had found a rare summoner. A Lightning Summoner. Her General would be pleased to meet and see the girl.

IN THE LITTLE PALACE, the Darkling had read the letter Nina had sent regarding a female Lightning Summoner in Novokribirsk and he had immediately sent Fedyor, Ivan and a healer to retrieve the girl by going around the Fold. He had told his Heartrenders to be careful around the Fjerdan border as that was where the Drüskelle resided. He would have to go and retrieve her himself to make sure there were no Grisha hunters to hurt her. He was pleased to know that the legend of a Lightning Summoner had come true and he finally had another solution for Ravka. He was planning to meet up with the party halfway in the North where a carriage was waiting for the Summoner to make sure nothing went wrong with the few oprichniki he had here with him.
He had been waiting for the Lightning Summoner, the legendary warrior, and now all he needed was a Sun Summoner to get rid of the Fold and end wars. Of course, he had to test her first and make sure she was the Lightning Summoner, but there was no way he could go and test her to Novokribirsk without his enemies on the other side wanting a war with him. He had to trust Nina enough that the girl she mentioned was the Lightning Summoner she thought and believed to be.

From the other side of the Fold, Nadia laid on the bed Nina had tucked her in. The young girl stirred a little before opening her eyes to see light coming out of the balcony windows. Her eyes wandered around the room and saw her katana at the foot of the bed, a light breeze going in the room from the open balcony door.
“Morning.” A voice beside her suddenly spoke up and Nadia was about to jump and grab her katana until she felt a searing burning pain from her thigh. She grunted in pain and clutched the leg. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to uh scare you.”
The girl felt her heart beating a little slower. Heartrender. She looked over to see a woman with light brown curls on top of her head, pulled by pins to stay in place and light blue eyes looking back at her with a soft smirk on her lips.
She tensed up and asked, “Who are you?”
“I’m Nina. And you should say you’re welcome for saving you.” The unknown female, who introduced herself as Nina, sassed to her.
“I had it.” Nadia grunted as her hands went back to her leg. Nina hummed sarcastically and stared at her leg which was under the blanket she had placed on the Shu girl.
“You should heal in a few days. The cut on your leg wasn’t bad, wasn’t deep or anything. A healer should be here to heal that, they should be here in a few.”
“How long have I been out?” Nadia asked.
“A few days, give it or take.” Nina replied back. She seemed to be organizing her clothes in her luggage.
“Thank you. For saving me.” Nadia said to the female softly, her gratitude showing. The Heartrender merely smiled and she took the young girl by her arm, helping her up and towards the table in the room that had bread and a few fruits for her. The young girl reached hesitantly towards the strawberries on the bowl and sniffed it carefully. It looked fine to her, but she was still cautious. Despite the nice gesture of patching her wound up and helping her and saving her, the girl didn’t know Nina well enough to trust her. She had to go back to Kaz, Jesper, and Inej. She needed to bring the jewellery she stole back to buy Inej off. Her bag.
“Do you know where my bag is?” Nadia asked her saviour.
“Over there and I didn’t look.” Nina gave her a knowing glance which Nadia blinked in surprise. The Shu girl reached over and rummaged through it to see the watches, rings and valuables she had stolen still there. Her letters to Kaz, Jesper and Inej were still there.
“Do you remember what happened?” Nina asked.
“I saw a bright light like lightning and it killed him.” She frowned as she saw the flashing images of the light she saw.
“Good.” Nina smiled, she remembered. “That was you.”
Nadia looked up at her in surprise, the frown on her pale face still there. “What?”
“I’m sure someone will explain everything to you.” Nina patted the girl’s shoulder. There was a knock on the door of the room. The Grisha female walked towards it and there was whispering that Nadia couldn’t hear as she was still processing.
“Your ride is here.” Nina smiled before helping the girl get up from her chair and they walked down towards the outside to see a group of disguised soldiers with horses. “You’ll be safe with them, I promise.”
She looked towards the Heartrender in confusion. She simply smiled at the girl in reassurance to keep her there.
“Can I at least get my katana?” Nadia asked Nina, she knew she couldn’t leave without her weapons. Nina sighed and looked towards Fedyor who nodded.
“I’ll get it—”
“No, it’s fine. I’m not completely useless.” Nadia sighed and limped towards the inn and walked upstairs, not paying attention to the burning pain on her leg. She had to power through the pain. Looking around the room she was just in, she grabbed Kaz’s letter and started writing to him on the back with the pencil she had with her.
Kaz
By the time you get this letter, I’ll be gone. But I’m fine and I’m safe. Tell Jesper and Inej that too. I promise, I’ll come back. The Crows are my family. You guys mean something to me, you bought me from the White Rose and I don’t think I could ever repay you for that. But someday I will when I get back to you, Jesper, and Inej. The jewels are still here in my bag if you haven’t seen it. One word: Grisha.
Nadia
She rolled the letter back into a scroll and caught sight of the golden crow head of her dagger and she felt joy to see one of her precious weapons and grabbed it. She grabbed her silver sequin blue scarf and wrapped it around her neck. She took the thigh holster of her dagger and wrapped it around on one of the leather straps of her saya. She took her katana and put it back in its sheath and she wore it on her back, the dagger was on her left shoulder and completely hidden by the blue scarf she wore. She took off one of her fox rings and slid it on the letter that was rolled for Kaz to read. If Kaz saw one of her rings, he’ll know about her and her whereabouts and stuffed it back in her bag where hopefully her boss will find it.
She could still fight, but she knew she was outnumbered out there and she was still injured. With a Heartrender and soldiers out in the front, she couldn’t fight them off despite her skill with a dagger and her katana.
Limping down towards where the Grisha were. They were still there waiting for her. She was helped on the back of the horse where she sat uncomfortably, especially the pain on her leg getting worse. Saints, she did not want to be another Kaz Brekker with her leg.
“My name is Fedyor and that’s Ivan.” The man with brown hair smiled at her and she was still tense. His accent was thick and his smile was soft.
Another guy on horseback was frowning with a stoic face. He didn’t seem happy at all. Or was never happy. A girl on another horseback on the other side of her and Fedyor smiled at her, the unknown girl’s toothy grin was white and bright.
“That’s Sonia.” Fedyor pointed to her. She approached Nadia and the Ravkan girl seemed to tense up again. The half Suli girl smiled softly in reassurance before she looked around and waved her hands in intricate and delicate movements. She felt the cut on her leg start to stitch together, the pain now gone and her realization kicked in. They were Grisha. She was definitely not getting out of this now that she was on a horse with them.
“Hold tight.” Fedyor smiled before taking off towards the North.

Back in Ketterdam, Kaz looked over at the map on his wall. His blue eyes trailing towards Novokribirsk where he knew the little fox was. He hadn’t heard from her and she usually sent letters to Inej and Jesper and occasionally to him to update him on her missions, but no letters came from the Vixen of the Barrel.
He was getting worried and it was something Kaz Brekker did not like because he wasn’t usually like that at all. And that itself was worrying. He would have to ask Jesper at some point about Nadia to see if he received letters. He had already asked Inej from one of his meetings with her about anything in Ketterdam. She responded that she hadn’t gotten anything since a few days ago. Her letters had stopped altogether and he knew she always sent letters to inform him and the Crows about anything she found. It was usually everyday, not once a week.
Now it was all gone, not a word from the Vixen. Quiet, but it didn’t mean it was peaceful. More of a warning for Kaz, an alert.
✧・゚: *✧・゚:* *:・゚✧*:・゚✧☆☼☽ϟ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
From Nadia’s journey to the North, Fedyor smiled at the girl while Ivan looked outside of the carriage they were in, looking at the Oprichniki that his General had sent with them. Both wore their signature red keftas with black embroidery, marking them as Heartrenders. When Nadia looked outside from the window of the carriage, she saw the Healer that mended her cut together wearing a red kefta with silver embroidery. “You don’t know about the legend regarding the Sun Summoner?”
“I know, but last I checked I’m not a Sun Summoner.” Nadia frowned, shifting uncomfortably from her seat. Her scarf was still secure around her neck and still hiding the dagger.
“You aren’t, but you’re something more special.” Fedyor told the girl, leaning in. “They call you the warrior. The protector.”
It had been two days since she left Nina and Novokribirsk. Two days of her complaining as to where she was going. She couldn’t send a letter to any of the Crows and she was stuck with two Heartrenders surrounded by guards, travelling around the North. It was night now and she was still stuck in the damn carriage they had gotten in a day ago after reaching the Fjerdan border.
“Stop. Incoming. Enemies.” Someone yelled outside. Her two companions with her in the carriage became alerted and Ivan got out.
Fedyor turned to the girl, “Stay here please.” He smiled and took off, closing the door behind him.
“Hell like I will.” The girl muttered and went out with her katana and dagger still close to her body. She found a group of men around her waiting for her to get closer and attack her. An ambush.
She pulled out her katana and twirled it around gracefully. One of the hunters advanced towards her and she immediately swung her katana and sliced his arm, blood now adorning her silver weapon. She kicked him and he was down on the snow. Another advanced towards the side, but she sidestepped and kicked the back of his leg causing him to fall. She caught sight of one of the hunters having a whip-like trap and began to whip it towards her, the silver wolf with red ruby eyes at the end of each rope and she swung her sharp blade up, slicing the rope in the middle. She grabbed one of the broken ropes and ran towards another man. Using the rope as a cuff, she twisted it around his hands and pulled him down, tying it around his wrists to render him useless.
She ran to another and swung her katana to block his axe. She quickly grabbed her dagger and punctured it in his thigh and kicked him to the ground. Grabbing the dagger again and throwing it to another. The fight was quick and her jumping from one enemy to another with her leg healed from a few days ago. The stark white snow around her was adorning a dark red from the blood that was spilling from her enemies. She moved swiftly and gracefully with her sword, the weapon becoming a part of her, moving like one.
But she was caught off guard when a rope had seized her from swinging again and wrapped around her figure causing her to be defenseless. She saw the same silver wolf pendant. She knew the other Heartrenders she met and the Healer were out there with the guards fighting others. She tried to reach for her dagger that was on her left side of her chest. She felt a whip catch her ankle and she was slammed down on the snow with leg being dragged towards them. She grunted and tried to plant herself down, but she knew it was useless with her weighing lighter.
Suddenly darkness took over the area and she felt the atmosphere change. She looked up to see a dark figure with shadows behind them, dressed in black. She saw shadows gathering together and a blade was created and was sent towards the Drüskelle. She turned to lay on her back and looked down to where she was supposed to drag to see the Grisha hunter already dead on the snowy floor.
She looked up when she saw a shadow of a man. The General of the Second Army.
“Are you alright?” The Darkling asked the girl who was still on the snowy ground.
Nadia panted and looked up at the General with wide eyes. The General, who had the power to summon shadows, was here. He was here to retrieve her.

KAZ BREKKER DIDN’T NEED A REASON, but he needed a reason as to why the Vixen hadn't returned from her mission from Novokribirsk. She had told him she’ll be back after four days, it had been 2 weeks now. He hadn’t received a letter from her either, Inej and Jesper haven’t received a letter as well. Kaz caught sight of Jesper by the bar and he limped towards him, his cane thumping against the wooden floors of the Crow Club. He was wearing his neat and tailored suit, he looked like a rich merchant. Although he dressed like one to mock them, he added his leather gloves he always wore to prevent from touching anyone.
“Any word from Nadia?” Kaz asked him. His blue eyes burning at the side of Jesper’s face, his gaze suddenly switched to the sea of drunk people. Their yells of frustration and joy echoing the club from their losses or wins from gambling. It was never quiet in the Crow Club, one of the reasons why Kaz would be cooped up in his room. He would only leave for a mission or meeting. He knew Nadia would occasionally join him with reading a book in one of the collections he retrieves from his missions, the girl would sometimes go with Inej to spy on people or practice daggers and on an occasion, she would join Jesper with gambling and win him money.
“Nothing from Nads.” Jesper shook his head as his elbows rested on the counter of the bar.
“Nads?” Kaz looked towards the tall Zemeni sharpshooter, who was fiddling with his precious revolvers that seemed to be a part of him. His blue eyes focused on one of his Crows.
“Kaz, she’ll be fine. She has a badass sword and her dagger with her. There’s a reason why she’s called the Vixen of the Barrel or Brekker’s Fox.” The sharpshooter gave his boss a charming boyish smile, his boss' face remained cold and impassive.
Kaz knew the fox could take care of herself. She had the taste of the real Ketterdam streets since she was 12 years old. She may act ruthless to those who would underestimate her or anyone who would harm any of her friends, but she still had the same soft heart he knew she had since he met her and since Jesper knew her. He didn’t know how she kept her kindness or innocence within her, Ketterdam turns you into a criminal with no innocence left in your body and somehow she still had it in her. She was stronger than she looked, stronger than most people don’t give her credit for, especially with her brown doe eyes and curly black hair as well as her pale face and the bags underneath her eyes. She always looked sick or exhausted since he met her, but she had strength and agility within her.
When he first met her, she had the face of a nice and pretty girl with a picture of naivety and purity which was unusual in Ketterdam, but he knew it gave her an advantage. People would fall for the lies that fell on a pretty girl’s lips, which was why he chose her to be a part of the Dregs. A Crow.
“You better be right or else the money I paid her off from Onkle Felix will be of waste.” Kaz hissed and sauntered off to his office, the thumps of his cane fading.
Jesper was left by the bar with a sheepish smile on his lips. His hands were still holding his precious revolvers. He knew he didn’t make the situation better because he was also worried about her.
Nadia was the one to send letters to people to assure them. He didn’t know why, but he had an inkling that she sent letters because of Kaz. She only sent letters when she’s far away and that she couldn’t make it in time to report to Kaz. First, she sent letters to prove her loyalty to their boss. Second, to send them updates on where she was and alert that she was still alive. It worried him that she hadn't sent a letter to him or the others.
“Jesper.” A voice suddenly came out of nowhere and it scared him.
Jesper jumped in fright with his revolvers pointing up, “Don’t do that and how do you do that?” He turned around to see Inej with her hood up.
“Hello, love. What brings you here?” Jesper greeted the Wraith, drinking one of the shots he ordered.
“There’s a word about something from Dreseen. A life changing one.” Inej started.
“Better go see boss man then.” Jesper smiled at the girl before strolling off towards one of the gambling tables.
✧・゚: *✧・゚:* *:・゚✧*:・゚✧☆☼☽ϟ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
From Kirigan and Nadia, the two stopped in a nearby forest to rest for a while. She was helped down the carriage that she and the General were in to stretch and walk around for a bit. The two stood and watched their surroundings, the light breeze touching their skin. Nadia didn’t talk that much to him, rather she stayed quiet and looked out of the carriage to avoid eye contact or a conversation. The General suddenly turned to her.
“Do you know what you are?” The General asked the short girl. His grey quartz eyes scanning her face to see an impassive emotion. He seemed surprised by this, he would usually get a moment of confusion or fear from others, but not her. He gave her a calculating look, trying to figure her out. She came from Novokribirsk, she could be from anywhere. From Novyi Zem, to Kerch, to the Wandering Isles, anywhere. But that meant someone had been sneaking people through the Fold. Specifically, Grisha. His people. Smuggling them out.
She finally shook her head to answer him.
“You are what they call a Molniya Koroleva. Also known as—” The General continued.
“A Lightning Queen.” Nadia cut him off. A look of disbelief on her face. She shook her head, “But I can’t be Grisha.”
“Then that must mean you’re from here if you can understand the language of the people here.” He squinted his eyes at her, intimidating her. She didn’t squirm or anything because she saw the same calculating look that Kaz gave her on some occasions, but she gulped because she made the mistake of translating his Ravkan words.
“Have you ever been tested?” He asked again. This time, she willingly answered no. “Where did you grow up?”
“I grew up in Ketterdam. My mother was Ravkan.” She told him tensely. She had only told Inej about her mother and Jesper on an occasion when he asked because what was a half Shu Han girl doing in Ketterdam and he learnt that she grew up in the streets. Her mother had taught her Ravkan at a young age as well as a few Fjerdan words. Her father was Shu but according to her mother, he had died. She had never met her father, she was just a baby when he died. Her mother died when she was just 12 years old and she was left to fend for herself and at the time, Onkle Felix had taken her.
He watched her as she suddenly shifted at the mention of her mother. There was more to her than her hard exterior and her skills with the katana that rested on her back. She didn’t trust him, that was obvious to him. So, he had to gain that trust.
“We had a name for you. We always had. The Lightning Summoner. The protector of the Sun Summoner. Repels the volcra of the Fold.” The Darkling’s quartz grey eyes trained towards her and he saw her scrunch her brows together. “With unique powers of thunder and lightning, electricity.
“But I can’t be a lightning summoner.”
“Why not?” He retorted. She didn’t answer. She didn’t have an answer because she didn’t know how to answer. All her life, she had to grow up in a shit pile of city where children shouldn’t grow up in. Her loving mother died and she was taken to the White Rose and at some point during her 16th birthday, she was sold to another who was the same age as her, but he made her useful and she felt like she belonged there in the Crow Club. Onkle Felix didn’t need her and so he sold her off with a price. Inej was the same and she wanted to do the same thing Kaz did to her. But Heleen was proving it to be difficult.
He pulled the ring on his right pinky finger. She looked at the ring, it seemed to be like a claw. She gulped nervously. He slipped the ring on his thumb. Don’t show fear, I am the one who inflicts fear.
“May I?” He asked as he touched her navy blue sleeve. She reluctantly gave her arm to him, something about him seemed to draw her in. Drawing her to him like a magnet. He lifted her sleeve and pulled it up and the claw of his ring dragged down her arm by the sharp edge. Then sparks of electric current started to flow through her body and something inside her ignited like fire. Hearing buzzing in her veins, it was giving her adrenaline. The crackling of electricity in her ears and suddenly a thundering clap in the sky boomed throughout the air, the clouds suddenly darkening.
He gazed down at her in astonishment, his lips started to curl up. He felt the electricity flowing through her, the electricity didn’t electrocute him like he was expecting. Instead it was giving him adrenaline like a drug that gave you ecstasy. It was like enhancing his senses in a way like an amplifier, but more for his emotions. Promoting overwhelming pleasure as well as excitement. She was shining in his eyes, the white light electricity giving her a glow.
She let out a gasp as he released her from his grip. The fire inside of her dying and the power suddenly hiding again inside of her.
“You are one of a kind, malen’kiy molniya.” He gazed down at her.
One of his oprichniki approached the two, but the Darkling’s eyes were trained towards Nadia. His gaze never strayed from here, looking at her in amazement.
“General, news of a Sun Summoner. The Summoner is discovered from a skiff crossing the Fold.” He said to his General.
The General looked over at him in surprise as did Nadia.

Back in Ketterdam, Kaz stood in Dreseen’s cellar with Inej, Jesper and the Heartrender he retrieved and stole from Pekka Rollins. He watched as an unknown man that Dreseen’s men had acquired was sitting in a chair, tied up with a sack on his head. The sack came off from the head of the captive. The Crows saw his face beaten up and blood on his face and bruises all over it, taking Inej and Jesper by surprise as it was a horrific sight while Kaz remained inexpressive. Milana, the Heartrender from the Orchid, had taken her place beside the boy named Alexei and started using her powers with just a touch on his wrist.
“You won’t believe me, but it was a Sun Summoner.” Alexei’s eyes were trained towards Milana. Inej inhaled shakily, her eyes wide in shock as she turned to Kaz and Jesper. Her lip curled up a little as her hand went up to her chest. Her beliefs. Her Saints.
Dreseen walked towards the captive and kneeled down to look at him at eye level. “Who was it?”
“If I’ll tell you, you’ll set me free?” Alexei asked. Kaz rolled his eyes a little. Never trust a man who has captured you and tortured you. But he knew the boy was under the hypnotizing and soothing touch of a Heartrender.
“You have my word. You can go anywhere in the world from here. ” Dreseen nodded. He pushed on. “Just imagine. Come on.”
“Her name is,” Alexei started, but hesitated. Milana saw this and pushed on with her powers. “Alina Starkov.”
“Alina Starkov?” Dreseen asked once more with Kaz’s calculating gaze on the beaten boy. Alexei nodded and Dreseen stood up, turning to the young criminal prodigy who worked for Per Haskell.
“And another word has come from the edge of the Fold.” Dreseen smirked at Kaz, who was confused but his face showed nothing. Inej and Jesper looked towards their boss in confusion. “A half Shu girl. With a katana.”
Kaz stood straighter at the mention of her weapon, his grasp on his cane tightened. Inej’s eyes widened along with Jesper’s.
“A Lightning Summoner. A warrior to protect the Sun.” Dreseen didn’t know who she was, that much Kaz knew. She was known around the Barrel because of the White Rose and her association towards him and the Crow Club, but some rich merchants wouldn’t know about her or the Crows because they’re only known in the criminal world.
Her mother was Grisha as Kaz remembered from one of the conversations he heard from Onkle Felix and it was one of the reasons why (besides Jesper’s word and her natural abilities with sneaking and fighting) he had paid her indenture as well as bought her. Although she didn’t show any Grisha power, it was still in her veins and she had the skills none had. And now he knew what kind of Grisha she was. A Lightning Summoner. If that even was true.
Inej gasped quietly. Not only the Sun Summoner existed, but her friend was a Lightning Summoner. Her Saints.
Kaz squinted his eyes towards Dreseen.
“You said only the Sun Summoner, I’ll see what I’ll do with the Lightning one as I please if I do find her.” Kaz hissed at him, the underlying anger seeping through him a little but he kept it in. Jesper had his hands placed on his revolvers and Inej towards one of her many knives.
Dreseen saw this and he knew he couldn’t win if he tried, especially if the summoner was important to the criminal and his pathetic little birds. He didn’t know why she was important to them, but he rather let go of this and got the Sun Summoner instead. The Sun Summoner, the most important piece to Ravka.
“Fine, but you bring me Alina Starkov.” Dreseen grunted in dismay at the thought of not having the Lightning Summoner, but he had a plan to get her. He took a gun and shot it towards Alexei, killing him in an instant.

FROM ACROSS THE FOLD, Nadia and the General had arrived from their trip towards the edge of the Fold where the Sun Summoner was currently in. She was hoping that Kaz or Inej or Jesper would notice her not sending any letters and would devise a plan to get her. If she had to, she would escape whatever place she would be in and find her own way back to Ketterdam.
The General, on the other hand, placed a black cape on her lap and told her to wear it before telling her that Ivan would come and retrieve her. He wanted her to be unnoticed by some, even though everyone already knew of a Lightning Summoner existing and him retrieving her.
The General had to keep the Lightning Summoner close. She was sly as a fox, quick on her feet and in a fight. He knew she’ll fit in well in the Little Palace. His priority right now was to see the Sun Summoner and make sure she truly had that power like Nadia had hers. A coincidence that both theoretical and mythical saints had emerged just days away from each other. His equals. Two people who had no power like the others, different like him. There were three now, the Starless Saint, the Sun Saint, and the Thunderous Saint. All three powerful people who will live eternally, forever.
The only problem was that the Lightning was hard to break. Hard to get through with her stubborn personality. Only struck when she needed to or when it was the time to strike down. She was good at it, good at hiding her emotions because not once did he see a glint of fear or emotions that he would usually see when people were face to face with him, just the strong stubbornness and confidence as well as bravery when he watched her fight the Drüskelle. She was quiet, he noted. Usually quiet and non-chatty to him and his guards, he expected it considering she hadn’t met him or the others before. They were completely strangers.
He didn’t know what compelled him to her, maybe it was the overwhelming emotions she managed to send him by her electricity that buzzed in her veins. She managed to catch his attention and unbeknownst to him, he had managed to do the same for her. The intrigue practically ran through his veins the minute he heard of her unusual but unique power. She was even more of a mystery than the legend of the Sun Summoner, not once did people claim to be her unlike her other half which was the sun.
He looked up to see the Healer he sent on the trip from Novokribirsk. The half Suli girl was another one of his prized Grisha soldiers. A Healer. She was much more skilled at what she could do, from healing people fast and the fact she could hide what she was doing with only placing her hands on injuries. Her skills with fighting was the last reason he placed her in the ranks as one of his personal guards.
He motioned the girl to come near him and ordered her, “Sonia, look after the Lightning Summoner for me. She’s a sly one.”
“I quite agree.” She agreed with him, she noticed the girl’s light steps and swift movements from her fights. One thing she noticed was that the girl didn’t resist from being taken. “She’s one silent but fierce lightning and quite elegant.”
“Quite the opposite of her power. Loud and thunderous.” The Darkling muttered in thought, the girl running around his mind. He turned to the Healer and commanded her, “Go.”
“Moi soverenyi.” The girl bowed to her General and left his side, going straight to another part of his tent where he knew Ivan led the summoner.
Nadia was unlike any other, especially someone from Ketterdam. Right, Ketterdam. Well, he finally had a reason why she was good at hiding emotions. He had heard of Ketterdam and what it had to serve, the island of criminals. The place that took away the innocence of a person once you enter and somehow he didn’t see it in Nadia. All he knew was what he heard and he certainly didn’t see it in her. Sure, he saw the hard exterior of the girl and he couldn’t blame her, with being surrounded by people she couldn’t trust at all, but there was something about her that he couldn’t shake. Then suddenly all his thoughts of her went away when he caught a glimpse of his tent.
As soon as he entered his tent, he got rid of his cape and placed it on his chair. Everyone stood straighter and remained silent as he stood in front of his desk with his back facing the people that were with him. No one uttered a word, too frightened and nervous to even breath loudly, in fear that he’ll consume them using his shadows. There were questions about the Lightning Summoner he brought in, somewhat much rarer than he and the Sun Summoner combined but still, no one dared to speak their thoughts out loud.
“Well? Bring me the Sun Summoner.”

Back in Ketterdam, Kaz left Dreseen with Inej and Jesper in tow. They had already dropped off Milana and left her on her own to survive with her boss at the Orchid murdered by Pekka Rollins. Jesper followed him willingly, but Inej seemed confused and furious at Kaz for making a rash decision. Inej knew Nadia would berate him for making a decision he made out of spite, but it was all he had. Spite. Anger towards Pekka Rollins. His long vengeance towards the man.
Entering the Crow Club with silence between them, Kaz went straight to his office to plan the heist as well as getting Nadia back. Inej went with him, bombarding him with questions now that they were alone and away from the prying eyes of pigeons alike.
“What was that? You want to tell me?” Inej asked, her voice sounded restrained.
Kaz took his watch out, the watch Nadia stole for him. Six hours to make a plan to get the Sun Summoner and be rewarded with a million kruge. Six hours to make a plan and get her back.
“Be more specific.” He said to the Suli girl, his voice displaying impatience as he closed the watch he held.
“It was one thing when we had at least a week to find a way across the Fold, but sunrise? We have to say no.” Inej insisted, her tone growing more stern and her stance getting rigid which was way out of her character.
“No.”
“That’s a no to saying the job then?” Inej asked in confusion. Kaz wasn’t one to back down to something valuable, especially when one of his investments was missing and was very expensive to buy. He continued flipping through papers hurriedly.
“That’s a no to saying no.” Kaz replied. And a no to not saving her. As far as they knew, they still thought Nadia was hiding in Novokribirsk and away from the prying eyes of people who would hunt her.
Inej grew more irritated, “We can’t go!”
“Can we?” Kaz fired back, looking up at her.
She brought her arm up and showed off the Menagerie mark on her wrist to him, “As much as I want to go and get Nadia back, I can’t go.”
“You will.” He told her firmly. “I had sent Nadia to Novokribirsk because of this. She insisted on buying you off.”
“What?” Inej looked at him in disbelief, but she felt wanted and like she belonged to them. Nadia went all the way across the sea to retrieve valuable belongings, expensive rare ones at that, and steal her way so Inej can leave Heleen and her brothel.
“She was tasked to steal more money or anything worth more to get you out.” Kaz told her, his regret tormenting him. He regretted letting Nadia go alone and she got herself in trouble. He expected her to get in trouble because that’s what she was drawn towards, that’s what got her to him in the first place. Trouble with Jesper, trouble with a few gang members.
Despite the warm feeling she felt and the gratitude, Inej couldn’t help the feeling that Kaz was blaming her for getting Nadia captured.
“I have a plan.”
“No, you don’t and Nadia sure as hell would agree with me.” Inej replied back.
“Well, last I checked she isn’t here is she?” Kaz snapped at her before returning his attention to the papers he was looking through.
“You don’t know how to pull off this job.” Inej pushed on, trying to get him to change his mind.
“I still have six hours and right now, you aren’t helping.” He hissed at Inej, looking back down at the paperwork he had on his desk.
“Maybe you crack how to find a way to cross the Fold, but this doesn’t solve this problem, does it?” Inej shoved her arm in his view out of aggravation.
“If I can’t crack this, none of us are going anywhere and Nadia will be stuck with the Grisha all her life.” He glowered at her. He knew of Nadia’s fear of being trapped and chained because despite her working for him, he gave her enough freedom and didn’t make her feel the suffocation of being trapped. She didn’t know when to resist and when to comply, that was the problem he needed her to learn.
“And if you do?” She fired back.
“Then maybe you stay here!” Kaz exploded out of irritation, tired of her questions and slammed the papers he was holding down on the desk angrily.
“Maybe I won’t be here when you get back.” Inej said to him. Although there was guilt in her stomach at the thought of leaving her katana wielding companion in the hands of Grisha and Generals, she knew she couldn’t leave with Heleen around. She turned around and left his office, heading towards his office doors quietly and left there. She knew he’ll think that she’ll leave through the windows. Going down the Club, she went straight to where Jesper was drinking.
“Inej.” Kaz called out to her, limping towards the open area of his office where Nadia would usually sit and read. Only to find an open window, letting in cold but misty air from the rain. He looked over at the table in front of the couch that Nadia usually occupied, the blue lily flower on the coffee table was wilting. The Fox would leave lily flowers on his desk or coffee table to signal him that she came by and she had a report when he wasn’t in his office. By the time he would find one lying around, he would approach her on his own and now, there was nothing but a dying flower.

In the Second Army Camp, Nadia stood in one part of the General’s tent where he left her while he was to retrieve the Sun Summoner. She now sat at the velvet black cushion of his couch, waiting for him to return. She knew she couldn’t escape with the camp crawling with Grisha and soldiers, especially when she had no idea how to go through or around the Fold without being killed. She was trapped and she felt her throat close in.
Nadia looked up to see the same Healer who healed her leg from the long cut on her thigh. She tensed up, “What are you doing here?”
“He asked for me to come and look after you.” Sonia stood beside the flap of the tent and watched the Lightning Summoner shift uneasily.
“I don’t need a babysitter.” Nadia retorted back to her, annoyed that he would send someone to look after her when she just needed a few moments by herself.
“I don’t agree with that considering how you slipped past and injured 8 Drüskelle hunters and put them down on the ground in a matter of minutes. You’re quite tricky and agile.” The Healer approached the girl and sat down across from her.
“Well, this must be stressful for you.” Sonia tried to get the Lightning Summoner talking, tried to make her comfortable.
Nadia stayed quiet, wanting to be left alone after being whisked far away from her home by the Darkling.
Trust only yourself, Vixen. That’ll make you survive. It is your servant, it can be bent and broken to your will.
She could hear him clearly, clear as the crystal blue water of the True Sea. Trust only yourself, Nadia. She thought as the same raspy voice of Kaz Brekker popped in again.
You are the Vixen of the Barrel, remember that. People fear you, you inflict fear so others won’t come for you.
There was a reason why Kaz gave her the name Vixen, besides her qualities of a fox, she had dreams of a fox that was slightly bigger than others. The bright red orange coat shimmering against the sunlight with light paws that sneaked about the forest.
Sonia, on the other hand, watched the half Shu girl ponder in thought. She knew she must be confused and scared, especially after being abruptly taken by the Darkling and his personal Grisha and guards. She knew what it was like being taken away against their will. She knew firsthand of that when they took her to Little Palace and she was lucky to be taken there rather than start at an army camp. The luxurious she was exposed to and the hot stones that warmed her bed at night and the fine clothes she was provided.
Nadia thought of the opposite, she wasn’t scared. Confused maybe, but never scared. She didn’t show fear to anyone or anything. Although it bubbled inside of her and she chose not to let it out of her cage. The wall she put up to protect herself. She had built this wall to be unpredictable and learnt a few things in the streets. She was considered a street rat to all before her life of crime started, but somehow Kaz gave her a power that she never thought she could have when he offered her a place among the Dregs.
“What’s your name?” Sonia asked the Lightning Summoner and this caused Nadia to look over at her with a glare. The half Suli girl was fully aware of the distrust that Nadia’s eyes held. “There’s no point in hiding it anymore.”
Nadia sighed in defeat, knowing she couldn’t go back to Ketterdam because she was surrounded by soldiers of the First and Second Army. With everything going on, resistance was not the answer to everything. Tricks were something she’s good at, and she was willing to show them and play along while she planned her escape. “Nadia. Lisitsa.”
The voice popped up again. Make them think you’re a fragile girl with no home and nothing else to go back to.
“It’s a beautiful name, Miss Lisitsa.” A deep velvety voice interrupted the conversation of the two girls and revealed the dark black kefta of the Grisha General. His eyes on Nadia. “But I’m afraid that it’s time to go.”

Meanwhile, Kaz had just dealt with Pekka Rollins and his men. Being beaten up and threatened after Inej fled. He had to find a way to cross the Fold fast if he wanted to get the million kruge and the Vixen back. He limped towards Jesper, who sat at one of the bar stools and tried to get a drink.
Jesper sighed in exasperation when Kaz’s hand found its way towards his shot, but he saw his boss’ enraged expression and his bruised face with his messy dark hair. He was still shaking in rage and Jesper decided to ask, “You all right, boss?
Kaz sighed and slammed the shot glass down. He grunted out his response, deciding to tell Jesper what happened. “No. I’ve been warned off the job.”
“By who?” The sharpshooter questioned.
“Who do you think?” Kaz let him guess. He knew his Crows were confused between his rage towards Pekka Rollins, but they always knew he had a hatred towards him. He pulled out his pocket watch to check the time.
“Did he remember you?” Jesper asked, suddenly alarmed and concerned.
“If he had, I’d be dead.” Kaz grunted out, putting the pocket watch away. “Sunrise is in five hours.”
“Yeah, but we’re off the job now, right?”
“Never make decisions out of fear, Jesper. Only out of spite.” Kaz limped forward and only stopped a few meters away from the Zemini boy. Jesper hummed, Nadia was right. He did things out of spite. The anger, vengeance, or anything he came across to, all decisions were made out of spite.
“Well, greed always worked for me.” Jesper shrugged, watching his boss peer down at his Club. The Zemini boy was waiting for a sarcastic response, but it never came. Right, Nadia was still out there and missing.
Kaz remained silent after that, analyzing his club and the exciting cheers of his clients and regulars. He tried not to wince at the pain from the bruise of his cheek, ignoring the burning pain. He tilted his head to Jesper once more, “Go guard the door.”
Jesper didn’t object, but he was annoyed. Instead of whining about it, he obeyed his boss as he didn’t want to anger him more than he already was and left his side. Leaving Kaz all by himself near the bar counters. He examined the club once more, seeing nothing out of the ordinary until he caught a woman counting money. She was counting differently than the people here in Kerch. Ravka. He finally had something to get him and his Crows across the Fold and retrieve the Sun and Lightning Summoner.

Back with Nadia, the General led her to another part of his tent. Entering the tent, she saw a girl who was also Shu with dark brown eyes and black messy hair. She looked disheveled and confused, dirt adorned her face and clothes. She looked out of
“Miss Lisitsa, I want you to meet Alina Starkov. The Sun Summoner.” The Darkling introduced them to each other and both girls examined each other. “Miss Starkov, meet Nadia Lisitsa. The Lightning Summoner.”
Nadia thought that Alina was very pretty despite the dirt stains on her, she had long lashes, thin lips and hooded brown eyes. Her thin waist and her black hair that fell just the middle of her back. Although she was pretty, Nadia thought that she looked sickly and almost exactly like her. The prominent dark bags under her eyes and her pale skin as well as the loss of color on her cheeks. She was quite short, almost as short as herself but Nadia was taller by an inch and standing beside the Darkling didn’t do her any better as they looked tiny compared to him.
Alina, on the other hand, examined the alleged Lightning Summoner, who was behind the Darkling. When the girl stepped up and she fully saw her face and body, she couldn’t help but feel a tinge of jealousy as she examined the girl. With the same hooded eyes that were brown, wide and doe eyed that gave her a touch of innocence, the pale pink lips, the curly brown hair, the thin nose and the round cheeks. But just like her, she looked sickly with the drained color on her cheeks, pale lips, bags under her eyes. But what caught her eye was the handle of a sword on her back and she suddenly felt guarded at the sight of the weapon.
“I’ll leave you two acquainted while I speak to Ivan.” He told them in a hurry before strutting out of his tent and leaving the two by themselves.
“You too?” Nadia turned her to Alina, who looked over at her.
“Yeah.” Before they could even exchange another word, two guards entered the tent unexpectedly and looked towards the two girls who stood across from each other.
“Time to go.” The two guards grabbed their elbows roughly and dragged them out of the tent and this caused Nadia to protest loudly with Alina. The two girls were shoved towards the General’s black carriage. Ivan was already standing beside the doors of the carriage and Nadia caught a glimpse of Fedyor taking his place behind her.
“You heard me. Let’s go. Get in.” Ivan demanded the Sun Summoner and looked over to the Lightning one who seemed exhausted from the journey she had.
“No! There’s been a mistake. I need to find Mal.” Alina continued as two guards prevented her and Nadia from escaping.
“The general does not make mistakes. His orders were to get you to Little Palace immediately. Now get in the coach.” Ivan let go of the door of the carriage and walked towards Alina in a threatening stance. Nadia stiffened unintentionally and her hand twitched.
“Everyone makes mistakes. Look at me. Do I look important to you?” Alina snapped at him, exhausted after entering the Fold and being dragged to face the Black General. Nadia couldn’t help but feel the same as her. Both were taken away by their will and now they were being forced to get in the carriage, the very same carriage she and the General shared while travelling together.
“You look like trouble.” He looked over to Nadia, his eyes flickered towards her katana that still rested on her back. “And I sure know the other one is the definition of trouble. Which are nearly the same. Move.”
“Wait. Malyen Oretsev. He’s in the medic tent. I need to speak to him. I’m going to speak to him.” Alina pleaded with him. Nadia stood awkwardly behind her with Fedyor, both of them watching the scene in front of them. She didn’t know what to do or what to say at that moment so she just stood there quietly.
“Listen to me. Every spy in the area will hear what you did and our enemies will come for you. They heard about the Lightning Summoner as well while we were near the Fjerdan border.” Ivan told the Sun Summoner, walked towards them with an intimidating stride, but it didn’t phase Nadia as she had learned to control her eoptions. “Our only chance is to get you and the Lightning Summoner to Os Alta, behind palace walls, before you get killed. Come on.”
Alina hesitated before willingly climbing in the carriage and sat down.
“And you. Please no more.” Ivan pointed to her and she smirked a little, knowing it was never going to happen anyway. “In you go.”
Nadia huffed, upset that she would have to ride another ling journey in the stupid coach. She got in anyway and sat beside the Sun Summoner with Ivan and Fedyor following, sitting across from her.
“Alina!” The Sun Summoner heard a familiar voice and this caused her to perk and look behind her to see her friend shouting for her.
“No, wait! I didn’t know!” The two childhood friends called out to each other with Alina banging on the glass window behind them and Nadia couldn’t help but feel sympathy for the girl. She clearly had a life outside her job as a cartographer and now she was a Sum Summoner who was leaving her injure best friend by himself. And Nadia thought the trip couldn’t be any worse than she thought.

Love story - Chapter 37
"What are you doing, K?" Jordan asked, his tone carrying both concern and curiosity.
Kiska didn’t even glance up. Her eyes were locked on the paper, her pencil darting around as if it had a life of its own. "A plan," she said firmly, as if the answer was self-evident.
"A plan for what?" Jordan pressed, leaning in closer to see what she was up to.
“To make Mom kiss Dad,” Kiska said with determination, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

There was hardly a single moment in life that Kaz could remember where Y/N wasn’t by his side. When Jordie and Kaz had left their hometown, heading for Ketterdam, he thought he’d be leaving his best friend behind. But by the time they boarded the boat, a girl came running down the dirt road as fast as her feet would carry her. With hair wildly whipping in the sharp Kerch winds behind her, she yelled, “Kazzy, wait for me!”
In Ketterdam they’d stayed practically attached at the hip, never wandering from each other. Y/N had been without Kaz only one night. That fateful night when the three children laid huddled together, battling the plague with all the strength they had. Y/N had awoken in that dark, grimey alley alone, holding onto a little red kerchief Kaz had gifted her. Kaz awoke amidst a sea of corpses, the only living being as far as his eye could see. But he swam back to the city, battling the waves and currents. He returned to her, he always did.

“Walking on a roof is so not a Jesper talent!” Jesper complained, his voice barely audible over the wind.
The walkway along the building’s roof was thin, a foot at the max, but if Inej could do it with ease - the others could manage, right? kaz brekker x reader - don’t let go
summary/request: “Oki hiiiiii can I request a Kaz x reader where hes forced to touch her in some way like shes dangling from a building and he catches her/helps her up? And/or one where he’s alone with her, helping her when she’s hurt and has to stop her from fighting him while he hurts her to stitch it up? Maybe knowing about his aversion to touch there’s some guilt on her part with some “Don’t be stupid of course I’ll help.” Whether they’re close or newly crushing is up to you, thank youuu. The walkway along the building’s roof was thin, a foot at the max, but if Inej could do it with ease - the others could manage, right? Kaz thought so when this route became their only method of escape. Now he scolded himself for forgetting that his crew could occasionally become a band of babbling and bumbling idiots. A/N: So in all honestly, I’m not completely pleased with what I came up for this. Perhaps I’m being too harsh on myself. But I feel like it’s an achievement just getting it posted considering I deleted the file of my OG version (big dumb-dumb moment) and had to rewrite everything from memory. 😑 Also this ended up going in the route of jealous Kaz instead of protective Kaz... whoops
With each twirl of Y/N’s skirts, the nausea within Kaz increased tenfold. She was stunning, dancing with grace underneath the obscenely large chandeliers within a mercher’s home. Her navy blue dress contrasted beautifully with the golden marble flooring. Everyone’s eyes followed the girl who moved like no one else. From Kaz’s point of view, he couldn’t see her smile, but no part of him doubted that it was dazzling.
She was on his crew for this precise reason, her scarily good ability to charm her way into any event and enchant any person. Their target was the young eligible bachelor son of one of the wealthiest merchers in Ketterdam. Someone was paying a hefty price for said son to be kidnapped. Kaz didn’t know or care why, kruge was kruge. If there was a person who could single-handedly reel in their target, it was Y/N.
Kaz, Inej, and Jesper were huddled together on top of the roof of the house, looking down upon the grand ballroom from the glass dome which provided a rather large view. Y/N floated over the floor, but always stayed in the middle of the ballroom, always within view. He’d made her swear on her life about a dozen times that she’d stay where he could see her.
The reasoning for such a request was based upon safety. The plan would go much smoother and safer if every Crow knew exactly what was going on. But as the date of the first part of their job grew closer, Kaz realized selfishness also lurked beneath. Some part of him wanted to ensure their target wouldn’t come in and sweep Y/N off her feet like a Prince Charming. He knew how mercher’s sons were - highly educated, charismatic, and toting promises of a luxurious life to their suitors. Could Y/N withstand such temptations? Kaz knew he wouldn’t blame her if she couldn’t. A mercher’s son could give her a better life than Kaz could even dream of offering.
When Y/N had first entered the ballroom, head held high and proud, Kaz’s stomach lurched when practically every person turned their gazes to her. She was easy on the eyes, her hair beautifully braided and twisted by Inej and her outfit selected by Jesper which included a few of his own personal rings. Kaz hadn’t participated in their activities as he only had one consistent opinion: she looked beautiful in anything.
He was rudely pulled out of his thoughts when Jesper snapped his fingers, pointing to the top left corner of the ballroom, “There he is!”
The target had finally entered. He was tall and dressed from head to toe in one of the finest suits Kaz had seen in Ketterdam. Clearly the heir to a wealthy mercher’s estate. He stood in the corner, sipping on a glass of wine while observing the dancing duos. Y/N switched partners every so often, displaying that she wasn’t tied down to just one.
Slowly, Y/N migrated towards their target and Kaz held his breath, anxiety flooding his senses. The task tonight was simple: just a flirty introduction, subtle, plant the seeds. Inej let out a deep breath she had been holding. Their target had taken the bait. The moment his eyes had laid upon Y/N, he quickly plucked a flute of wine off a passing tray to hand to her.
Soon they waltzed in the middle of the ballroom together, turning and dipping to the rhythm of the music. Everything was going to plan, except for Kaz’s sudden eruption of feelings. He felt sick to his stomach with doubt. For quite a while, he’d always had an inkling of a thought that Y/N liked him. Her lingering glances were difficult to ignore. But now, watching her happily waltz with another man, Kaz found himself wondering how he ever could have thought she liked him. Even if he did want to go to a social event, Kaz couldn’t dance, float over the floor effortlessly. He limped, always leaning on his cane for support. To put it simply, Kaz was envious.
Kaz froze as Y/N was escorted off the dance floor, hanging off the arm of the mercher’s son. Even so far away, Kaz could tell she was laughing, a wide grin splayed across her face. She leaned against the man, staring up at him with admiration. And the man seemed just as enthralled, tipping his head downward to whisper sweet nothings in Y/N’s ear. Kaz’s face grew hot with a raging flush at the sight.
“Well, the target has certainly taken the bait.” Inej laughed softly, shaking her head.
Kaz drew in a deep, ragged breath and steeled himself, “Good, it’s her job.”
“Is she competing for ‘Most Valuable Crow’? She’s certainly going above and beyond,” Jesper teased, his eyes trained on the scene below.
Bile rose in Kaz’s throat at that comment. Did Y/N actually like the target? Clenching his jaw, he coldly responded, “It’s the plan.”
Jesper groaned and threw his head back, “So when she flirts with a guy during a job it’s ‘part of the plan’, but when I do it you say I’m being ‘irresponsible’. I think your favoritism is showing, Kaz.”
Kaz didn’t entertain Jesper’s little rant with a response. Instead, he kept his eyes intensely trained on Y/N below. However, he could distinctly feel Inej’s gaze focused on the side of his face. The silence was tense.
“You’re jealous.” Inej finally commented.
“I am not.”
“No, you totally are. Look at you, sitting here watching her from above, silently brooding.” The Suli girl’s tone was teasing, a knowing smile spreading across her face.
On Kaz’s other side, Jesper suddenly gasped, “Oh Saints, you like her, don’t you?!”
Kaz shook his head no - a blatant lie, but there was no point in his actions. His two friends grinned at him like fools, eyes twinkling at the thought of Dirtyhands falling for a girl.
—————————————-
Kaz stood obscured in the shadows of one corner of the Crow Club. It was the agreed upon rendezvous point, where he’d meet up with Y/N after the ball. Inej and Jesper were supposed to be with him, but they’d both wandered off on their own. Kaz tightened the grip on his cane as he waited with bated breath. The night had been a success from what he could tell. Their target was being slowly, but surely reeled in. Only a few more calculated moves left and he’d be within Kaz’s reach.
When Y/N finally walked into the Crow Club, with the dim golden lighting casting across her face, Kaz’s heart stopped. She was stunning, even in her state of exhaustion with a faint layer of sweat across her brow. Her skirts were held up as she eagerly kicked off the heels she’d been wearing for the whole evening. Quickly, her eyes scanned the Club, searching for him. When their gazes met, a huge grin spread across her face as she practically skipped across the room to join Kaz in the shadows.
“These things are a monstrosity.” Y/N complained, throwing her silver heels onto the table next to Kaz.
Just barely, the corner of Kaz’s mouth quirked in response. “I see you had a good evening.”
“Everything went to plan!” she replied cheerfully.
“And a bit more.” Kaz’s voice was sternly professional but laced heavily with disdain.
The smile on Y/N’s face immediately dropped, her eyebrows furrowing together. “What’s that supposed to mean, Kaz?”
“Oh, I think you know.” Kaz’s tone was icy, crueler than necessary. But he simply couldn’t help himself. Seeing the girl infernally happy after spending the evening with the target peeved him. “Even Jes was surprised at how touchy you got and you know how casual he is with flirtatious advances.”
Y/N shot a withering glare at him, her eyes ablaze with fury, “I did my job. Exactly what you asked for. I don’t know what your damn problem is.”
Kaz simply huffed and tensed his shoulders. What is my problem?, he thought while staring at the girl. My feelings? Insecurities?
“I didn’t like you getting so close.”
“What else was I supposed to do Kaz?! Try to seduce him from across the room? Newsflash, that’s not how it works.” Y/N was pissed, that much was obvious. Her hands tightened into fists as she stared him down.
Kaz opened and closed his mouth slightly, looking like a fish while trying to find the words to say. “I don’t want you getting attached to targets.”
“Why would I?”
“He’s charming, wealthy, he has the lifestyle that would fit you so well.” Kaz left off the words he really wanted to say: He’s everything I’m not.
“Do you really think I want that life?” Y/N’s face fell, her eyes softly gazing at him with something that looked a lot like pity.
“Yes.”
“To be paraded around like a show pony, just a piece of arm candy? And then, when they start thinking of heirs, how to continue their legacy and bloodline, you suddenly turn into a broodmare. I don’t want that life.” Passion filled her voice and her hands moved expressively to illustrate her points.
Kaz clenched his jaw and simply nodded, “Good to know.”
“I’m happy here with you. I don’t want people to look at me like I’m just a pretty girl, a decoration. You value me, you see me.” Y/N suddenly blurted out, a red flush creeping onto her cheeks. The confession was sudden, completely unexpected by both parties.
Those few simple phrases felt like a dream to Kaz. It was everything he’d always wanted, but never truly admitted he needed to hear. She was happy with him. He gulped, pausing as he realized this is the moment. Just over Y/N’s shoulder, Kaz spotted Jesper who was grinning like an idiot and flashing him two encouraging thumbs ups.
“I like you, far more than I should.” Kaz whispered, barely audible over the obnoxiously loud chattering that echoed within the Crow Club. His heart beat rapidly and so many feelings flooded his brain - dread, hope, happiness. The moment her face lit up, lips curving up in a smile and eyes twinkling with happiness, he knew the decision he made was the right one.
“Well, I like you too.”

“I’m sorry, but we only have one room available.” The elderly innkeeper responded, his eyes anxiously flitting between the two people before him.
Kaz was sure they looked like a wreck. Y/N and Kaz were both exhausted and beaten down, worn out from a heist that nearly failed. A raw ache spread through Kaz’s leg in waves, making him tightly clench his jaw. Y/N, standing behind, wasn’t in good shape either. She kept both hands tightly clenched around her stomach and occasionally winced with pain. They were both drenched to the bone thanks to the torrential downpour outside. A duo of drowned gutter rats.
“Feel free to look around for other options, there are other inns nearby.”
Kaz snapped in response, “Already checked. We’ll take the room.”
With a grin, the innkeeper turned away to fish a silver key out of a cluttered drawer. Kaz pulled a wad of kruge out of his pocket and handed it over. In return, the silver key was dropped in his outstretched palm. The innkeeper hastily turned away to joyfully count his new acquisition.
Kaz flipped the key over in his palm, his stomach flipping with nerves in tandem. He hadn’t shared a room with anyone, not since Jordie. The thought of being so close made him nearly keel over with nausea. As much as the idea sounded awful, it sounded somewhat tolerable when Y/N was in the picture. At least it’s her, Kaz thought.
He motioned towards the staircase with a nod and Y/N obediently followed behind him. Together they climbed the rickety staircase, each step renewing the pain in his leg. Walking down the hallway, Kaz’s eyes carefully scanned the bronze plaques outside of each room. Y/N trailed behind Kaz, pushing the strap of the bag that contained their belongings up farther onto her shoulder.
“This is not the best place.” Y/N mumbled, her eyes focusing on the cobwebs hanging from the ceiling.
“Could be worse.” Kaz sternly responded, pausing in front of the door that displayed “Nine”.
“Oh yes, we could have gone with your original idea of sleeping in a barn.”
Y/N’s voice imitated the anger it previously held when Kaz first threw out that idea. They’d been running through the streets, trying to desperately find shelter. The original plan had been to board a ship bound for Ketterdam, but that ship was now indefinitely delayed due to the storm.
Kaz smiled slightly at her tone as he slipped the key into the lock and opened the door. The dark oak door swung open, revealing a cozy little room. An empty fireplace was stationed at one wall, directly across was a small door leading to a bathroom. And there in the middle was one bed. Things just got a whole lot worse.
Unfazed with their sleeping arrangements, Y/N slipped past him and into the room, allowing their bag to fall to the wooden floor with a thud. She shrugged off her soggy woolen coat with a relieved sigh. Cautiously, Kaz stepped into the room and let the door creak closed behind him. The room suddenly felt even smaller, it was smothering.
Y/N’s every movement made Kaz want to jump out of his skin. They’d been close, closer than what friends were supposed to be. He’d viewed her as more than just a Crow for quite a long time. Every laugh and smile she’d directed at the boy had been etched into his mind. But those feelings were vehemently pushed away, back into the deepest part of Kaz’s mind. He couldn’t afford to let his feelings dictate his actions.
Kaz gulped and began to shrug off his coat as Y/N sat down in a chair, slipping out of her boots. Her damp hair fell down, beautifully framing her face. Even in her state of exhaustion and pain, Kaz still thought she looked stunning. Y/N glanced up, her eyes meeting Kaz’s, catching him red handed in the act. Diverting his gaze, Kaz cleared his throat and moved quickly to hang up both their coats on a rack.
Y/N dug through their bag and tossed a clean change of clothes to Kaz. He caught the black articles of clothing and ran his gloved fingers over the hem of the shirt. Black - their mutual unofficial dress code. The other Dregs preferred unusual colors and eye catching patterns. Y/N hadn’t ever been like that. When she joined the crew, she took right after Kaz - dressing in all black in a respectable manner.
Kaz gulped and turned towards the bathroom. The silence between them was palpable, filled with the tension of unsaid feelings.
“I’ll take the bathroom.” Kaz stated simply, stepping into the bathroom and quickly closing the door behind him.
Letting out a deep breath, he ran his eyes over his reflection in the large mirror. To put it simply, he looked terrible. Dark bags hung under his eyes, contrasting sharply against his unhealthily pale skin. Light purple bruises were scattered across his face and he was sure they only got larger and darker underneath his shirt. Carefully, he stripped out of his gloves and delicately laid them on the countertop. Even with pain flooding his body, his mind stubbornly kept wandering back to her.
Kaz’s mind raced as he replayed the moments from their heist. The intelligence he had received about the guard’s rounds had been wildly inaccurate. Faintly, Kaz could still feel the sensation of the panic that had surged through his body when they had been cornered. Lacking guns, the guards quickly resorted to brute force to punish the thieves. Kaz still wasn’t sure what had come over him in the moment, but he’d begged. Begged them to spare her and take their wrath out on him. Y/N’s shrill scream, raw with anguish, echoed through his mind. She’d been furious, wildly struggling against the guard that held her back as Kaz paid for his mistake.
As he took off his vest and unbuttoned his shirt, he realized he was terrified that she knew exactly how much he really cared. He saw it in her wide, fear-filled eyes when he was on his knees before her, taking the punches and kicks with an air of courage. An even scarier thought was that he knew how much she cared. The emotions that had flashed through her eyes were not one of a concerned friend, it was something more.
Letting his wet black shirt drop to the floor, he gripped the countertops so tightly that his knuckles turned a ghostly white. Staring into his own eyes, he dove into the dark sea of his feelings, desperately trying to work out precisely what he was feeling. Everything was so confusing, his mind trying to pull two ways. Love was foolish, but Saints, did loving her feel so good. He was so tired of fighting off his feelings, constantly pushing the girl away. She was right here with him.
“Kaz?” Y/N’s voice paired with a soft knock against the closed door.
Startled, Kaz’s heart skipped a beat as he fumbled for the words to say, “Just… give me a moment.”
Dragging his hands over his face, Kaz pulled himself back to reality. His gaze roamed the reflection of his torso in the mirror, the black and blue mottling of bruises decorated his entire chest and abdomen. Quickly, Kaz changed into the dry set of pants Y/N had handed him. With a shaky hand, Kaz opened the bathroom door and strode out, the clean shirt hanging from his hand.
Without looking at Y/N, he hurried over to where she’d dropped their bag. Rifling through its contents, he pulled out a little tin of cream. Matthias had gifted it to him - some ointment the Fjerdan drüskelle had concocted for treating bruises. He could feel Y/N’s gaze roaming his back as he crossed the room and stood in front of a little mirror hanging on the wall. In the reflection, he could see Y/N sitting cross legged on the bed in her fresh clothes, a simple cotton shirt and shorts.
Clenching his jaw, Kaz turned his gaze away and opened the silver tin. Dipping in two bare fingers, he began to slather it over his torso. His touch was feather light, just barely ghosting over the sensitive bruising.
“You didn’t need to do that.”
Y/N’s voice made Kaz’s hand jump, his heart rate spiking right along with it. His chest felt tight as he continued the process of working the cream into his bruises.
“Do what?”
The girl paused for a second, her eyes still taking in Kaz’s form, before stammering out, “Protect me.”
Kaz drew in a deep ragged breath and his ribcage felt like it might snap under the pressure. Everything felt so hazy as he slowly turned around to face the girl.
“I screwed up. I built my plans upon a foundation of faulty information. You didn’t deserve to pay for my mistakes.” Kaz clenched his jaw after he finished his statement.
Y/N stared at him, seemingly with nothing more to say. Kaz slid the lid back onto the tin. He could feel the tickling tingle of the ointment working on his bruises.
“How bad are your bruises?” Slowly, he walked over to the bed and held out the tin to her.
“Nothing like yours.” Y/N responded, her voice barely above a whisper as her gaze scanned his chest.
“That’s not what I asked.”
Tension was thick in the air as Y/N slid off the bed and raised her shirt. Bruises were spread across her side. Nothing like Kaz’s, that much was true, but still severe. Kaz’s breath caught in his throat as he stared at the girl before him. Y/N reached out and grabbed the tin from Kaz’s outstretched hand. Their skin just barely brushing, her fingertips against his palm, set Kaz’s heart ablaze. It rapidly thumped in his chest, causing breath to leave his lungs.
The girl gave him a slight smile before working on applying the salve to her own bruises. Kaz’s gaze intensely followed her fingers. It was almost shocking how easily his brain just switched off, forgetting to worry about what he was doing. He just softly stared at her, absentmindedly taking in every small detail. Kaz was certain there was no one that could ever compare.
His gaze broke when the girl dropped her shirt back down, their eyes snapping up to meet each other’s. Y/N softly tossed the tin back into their open bag. Running a hand through his damp hair, Kaz sharply turned away and pulled a pillow and blanket off the bed.
“What are you doing?” Y/N asked, her voice laced with concern.
“I’m taking the floor.” Crouching down, Kaz went to work preparing his bed for the night.
“No, no. You’re injured for Saints sake Kaz.”
“I’m fine.”
“Seriously. You can hardly walk, don’t think I haven’t noticed how much worse your leg’s gotten.” Y/N marched over to Kaz and jerked the pillow out of his hands, “We’re not kids, we can share the bed.”
Kaz gulped and stiffly nodded. The thought of laying next to her sent his brain into a flurry. Shamelessly, he watched her as she pulled back the heavy bed covers and set their pillows a foot apart. As she climbed into the bed, he roughly pulled the dry black shirt on. The less chance there is of skin contact, the better, Kaz reasoned. For a second, he thought of retrieving his gloves from the bathroom, his second skin. But when he saw Y/N settle into bed, tucking herself underneath the large cozy covers, Kaz decided he needed to not need them.
Kaz’s hands lightly trembled as he slipped into bed, pulling the covers up over his chest. The blankets were warm, inviting him in from the chilly cold and rain of the outdoors. Closing his eyes, he hoped the girl couldn’t hear his heart erratically beating. Beside him, he could feel the covers shift as Y/N rolled over onto her side, now facing him. Her eyes slowly roamed his face, hovering momentarily over each little bruise. Kaz opened his eyes and tilted his head so their gazes met.
The intimacy of the moment sent a wave of lightheadedness through Kaz. She was so close. He could feel her warm breath fanning out over his face. The moonlight that crept in through the window perfectly accented the high points of her face. The soft blue glow complimented her eyes that shone so bright in the darkness. Everything about her sent Kaz’s mind reeling, as though he were a schoolboy thinking about his first crush. To put it simply, each moment, each lingering gaze shared between the two was intense.
A small smile played upon Y/N’s lips as she whispered, “What’s going on in that mind of yours?”
Kaz’s lips quirked. She always had him figured out, knew him like the back of her own hand. There was no use hiding anything from her, she was capable of luring out the truth no matter how deep he buried it.
He answered honestly, laying his heart out on the line for the first time, “I’m thinking about you.”
The girl’s breathing faltered, catching in her throat, “W-what?”
“You heard me correctly,” Kaz insisted, his eyes flickering all over her face, “You are always on my mind.”
Y/N’s eyes widened, shock taking over her features. Kaz desperately tried to regulate his breathing and heart rate. Yet the girl’s eyes flickering down to his lips made that task impossible. He simply couldn’t control himself when it came to her.
“Kaz?”
“Yes?”
“I’m in love with you.” Y/N’s voice was breathy, barely audible.
Kaz smiled softly at her and his hands slowly reached forward. He needed it, to feel her, to touch her. Softly reaching out, he trailed his fingertips down the side of her face. The feeling of her skin sent a shock through Kaz’s entire body. The feeling was disgusting yet so right.
“I’m in love with you too.”
At his words, a grin spread across Y/N’s face and Kaz couldn’t help but smile as well. If he could remember only one moment for the rest of his life, it’d be this right here - Y/N smiling up at him, her gorgeous face filled with glee.
Kaz Brekker decided right there that he was a complete and utter fool for Y/N L/N.

A/N: I combined these two requests because they were soooo similar. This was by far the hardest piece to write so far.
Of all the admirable traits Y/N embodied, Kaz treasured her patience the most. He never dreamed someone could actually like him with all his flaws and broken parts. How could a relationship survive without touch? To Kaz it seemed impossible, something that only existed inside his head. But Y/N made it a reality.
When she’d joined the Dregs and ultimately become a Crow, Kaz found himself enthralled with her. There was something Kaz couldn’t figure out that made her so welcoming, so warm. He found himself gravitating towards her even when the thought of liking someone seemed like a death sentence.
Just a few short months after she joined his crew, Kaz found himself basking in her warm presence. It was unlike anything he’d ever experienced. The comfortable silence they enjoyed felt natural, something that was simply destined to be. Kaz hadn’t realized how truly alone he felt until Y/N attached herself to him like a parasite. But a welcome one. Sure he had Jesper and Inej, and the Dregs who all held some weird reverence towards him but none of them could hold a candle to Y/N. She was otherworldly.
More often than not, they could be found together in his office at the Club or in his attic at the Slat. When he was around her, he could let his mask drop. She didn’t look at him as an idol or a leader. Every time she gazed at him, Kaz felt as though she was staring straight into his very soul, seeing the essence of his being. He didn’t feel like he needed to put on a show, be the ruthless criminal he was known for.
Instead, they could sip on their coffees and read books, simply enjoying the comfortable silence. They fit together perfectly like two puzzle pieces, made for each other. Kaz would sit quietly and listen to Y/N rave about whatever book she was reading. Whereas, Y/N would diligently listen as Kaz ranted about his plans, running through every single detail aloud. She was the only one ever granted the privilege of seeing the inner workings of his mind at play. At every heist, every job, Y/N knew every single exact detail for plans A through F.
And the bond only grew, to the point where neither could deny the intense feelings for each other. Y/N confessed of course, laying out her feelings and thoughts on the table. But she didn’t mind when Kaz couldn’t. That’s what he liked about her - she was patient. She didn’t need the words said aloud to know what he was feeling. Through his small acts of kindness, he knew she could tell he cared for her. The grin on her face everytime Kaz brought her donuts from the bakery on his way back from Fifth Harbor said it all.
She never poked or prodded him, trying to get Kaz to cross his boundaries when it came to touch. Instead, Y/N silently accepted that touch and Kaz weren’t two things that went well together. Y/N didn’t ask for him to, but Kaz tried, tried so hard to work through it. Everytime one of his hands reached out, twitching with nerves as it drew close to her skin, but ultimately yanked away, Y/N didn’t flinch. She always softly smiled, her eyes twinkling with affection and reassured him, “It’s okay Kaz.”
To Kaz, the most stunning thing of all was the way she saw him. When he looked in the mirror, he saw a monster - someone that didn’t resemble the innocent young boy that lived on a Kerch farm. He saw each life his hands had taken, each job he’d done and done well at that. The craving for vengeance driving his every action was visible in his eyes. But somehow, Y/N didn’t see any of that.
Whenever Kaz stared into the mirror, Y/N walked up beside him, a soft smile etched onto her face. She’d place a finger on the mirror, on top of his reflection, and file through all of his traits. To her, he was a painting, perfectly created, each and every feature placed there intentionally.
First her finger would glide to the reflection of his eyes, “Your eyes are like the ocean, waves rumbling but within you that rumbling is ambition. A drive to succeed, not everyone has that Kaz - you’re special.”
And then it would slide over the reflection of his skin, “Sun kissed, it’s like that pale golden rosy glow at sunset. The most beautiful color. And the scars and lines, they’re stories, the tale of your life.”
She’d continue, seemingly endlessly, always finding something good within all the evil. Kaz didn’t know how she did it, but by the time she finished, he didn’t feel so disgusting anymore. The heavy burden weighing down his shoulders always lightened and his brain didn’t feel so chaotic.
When he picked a lock, Y/N didn’t see a crime of breaking and entering. Instead, she saw a man gifted with incredible dexterity. When he formulated a plan for a heist, she didn’t see a criminal mastermind. She saw someone with a brilliant mind that could solve any puzzle.
She saw Kaz for who he really was, just Kaz. To her he wasn’t Dirtyhands or the Bastard of the Barrel - just Kaz. And she let him know that, always repeating it so he wouldn’t forget. Kaz never forgot. That was the beauty of her, she was calming and patient and everything Kaz so desperately needed.
But Kaz knew she needed to be touched, to be shown physically that she was loved, cared for. Her lingering glances at couples holding hands in the Crow Club didn’t pass him by. Kaz always noticed. It made him feel guilty, but it also motivated him, another ambition that found a way to reign over his mind, sitting beside revenge.
So he set his mind to improving and went about it like he would with any other challenge - he made a plan. Step by step, he promised himself he’d get better for her.
The first step was feather light touches, just barely grazing his fingers over someone. First with gloves, and then without.
One evening, nearly exactly two years after she’d joined his crew, Kaz initiated the first step. Y/N sat next to him on the couch that was stuffed in his attic. She softly thumbed through a large book she was reading, the old pages treated delicately. Kaz couldn’t help but watch her. She was far more fascinating than the sheet regarding the Crow Club’s profits that he was reconciling. His eyes followed every movement of her fingers as she turned the yellowed pages.
Kaz turned his attention to her other hand that lay in the space between them. Slowly, he inched his hand towards hers, fingers twitching in anticipation. Every thought that stirred in Kaz’s mind was wondering how he would happen, what he would feel if he just kept moving closer. Drawing in a deep breath, he steadied himself, calming his racing mind. It was far easier to think of doing something rather than actually doing it. With a gulp, one of Kaz’s fingers softly laid itself against Y/N’s hand.
The air was tense as Y/N froze, staring over at Kaz with a concerned gaze. It’s not horrible, Kaz thought as he let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding in. Her skin was warm, contrasting sharply with the cold, biting feeling of the ocean that overtook Kaz’s body. The two feelings wrestled for control, turning his mind into a bloody war zone.
Y/N’s gentle voice cut through the noise, “Kaz, you don’t have to.”
Kaz shook his head, eyes trained on the tiny spot where their skin touched, “I want to, I need to.”
After another moment, he inched forward again, now his entire hand covered hers, his fingers intertwining with hers. Breath caught in his throat, trying to rein in his mind that was running with panic. It’s okay, it’s Y/N.
From there, Kaz only continued to improve, of course with setbacks scattered generously along the way. At times he wondered if he’d ever be able to best the trauma and anxiety that raged within, if he’d ever be someone worthy of Y/N’s affection. But she was always there by his side, encouraging consistently through the highs and the lows. Not once did she ever try to push him. Kaz worked at a rate that fit him. Kaz knew he was finally getting better when Y/N reached out and intertwined her hand with his and he didn’t flinch. Each “first” was a milestone.
Their first hug came a year later. Kaz stood in the middle of the main floor of the Slat, feeling his face grow pale as he stared at the gorey scene before him. His heart hammered away as he overlooked Inej and Jesper’s bloody and still bodies. Nina fluttered between the two, tending to their wounds and utilizing her small science. Kaz was frozen on the spot, silently watching two of his closest friends fight for their lives. It felt wrong, so wrong, and then he was drowning, struggling to keep his head above the waves of dread and panic.
And then there was Y/N, his lifeboat, the only thing tethering him down to reality. She stepped in front of him, obscuring his vision, and ran her hands delicately over his face, wiping away the blood and grime.
“I did this to them.” Kaz choked out, barely a whisper.
Y/N swiped a few stray hairs away that fell over his face, “No, no, don’t do that Kaz. You drug them home, you saved them.”
Kaz shook his head, eyes trained on the bodies before him. He didn’t even look down at Y/N, he was too lost.
She gripped his cheeks and forcefully tilted his head down. Kaz’s eyes met hers, they were soft, warm, enveloping him.
“Don’t you dare blame yourself, Kaz Brekker.” Y/N’s voice was soft but stern, every word that left her mouth was spoken with confidence.
Her fingers softly danced along his jawline, skittering over the clenched muscles. But Kaz’s body jumped under her touch, willing to do her bidding - willing to relax. Staring down at her, he realized she was his rock. The one steady constant, the one person he couldn’t ever imagine leaving him. She always had a smile etched upon her face, one of patience, warmth, and understanding. What would I do without her?
Without a second thought, he wrapped his arms tightly around her, resting his chin on the top of her head. He’d grown accustomed to touches but this was something else. Kaz felt at peace wrapped in her arms, the memories that regretfully came along with touch stayed in the back of his mind. For the first time, they didn’t push their way to the surface, causing Kaz to be overcome with nausea and dizziness. Instead they stayed buried, where they should be - manageable. He focused every bit of his mind on the warmth of her body and how he could feel her lungs expand and deflate against his chest. It just felt right.
Another year later, two more “firsts” occurred, the most important firsts in Kaz’s opinion. Y/N spun about his attic, swaying like a leaf in the wind to the melodious music that filled the room. A smile was plastered on her face as she danced like a prima ballerina, beauty and power all combined into one. Kaz was transfixed, hypnotized by her movements.
She reached a hand out towards him, beckoning him to join her as a slower melody began to play. Of course Kaz couldn't say no, so he reached out and took her hand. Together they swayed, Y/N’s arms wrapped around his neck as Kaz’s hands ghosted over her, running from her hips up her sides. Kaz felt like he was touching something heavenly, a piece of the universe right under his hands. It sent his mind reeling, wondering what he could have done to be so lucky.
Y/N smiled up at him, her eyes slowly running over each of Kaz’s features. Her eyes glittered like gold in the dim light and they were inviting, tempting Kaz to fall even deeper in love if that was even possible.
As the song came to a close, Kaz pulled her closer and he pressed a kiss to her temple. To anyone else, it would have been a simple, mindless form of affection. But for Kaz it was something more. That kiss meant the world. It was a promise that he’d continue to get better, a promise that he’d do it for both himself and her.
“I love you, Kaz.” Y/N’s voice was silvery, floating in the air, blending melodiously with the dying music.
Kaz leaned back slightly so he could gaze into her eyes and his heart beat rapidly. Admitting for the first time, he whispered, “I love you too.”
At that moment, Kaz realized the past was the past and he couldn’t go back to change things. He couldn’t bring Jordie back, he couldn’t stop himself from waking up in that sea of corpses. But he could change the future, dictate what was to come. Kaz knew one thing for certain, Y/N was his future and he wanted to experience everything with her.
He would overcome his past, brick by brick, but he’d need time. It was a good thing Y/N had patience.

Kaz stood unmoving, scarily still as the others waited anxiously around him to hear his remarks after the heist. Y/N could feel her heart race a little faster every time Kaz readjusted his grip on the Crow’s head. The silence was awful, the type that left you feeling jittery and unnerved.
“Kaz, buddy, everything went fine. We got the target.” Jesper replied, carefully holding up a stunning jeweled necklace with two fingers. The sapphires set into their silver bases glittered magnificently in the low light.

Kaz uncomfortably hobbled up the stairs to his room, a bloody hand clutched over his shoulder. Y/N followed behind him, as she always did, something of a shadow - always there and never leaving. As they reached the landing at the top of the stairs, she quickly stepped in front of him, opening the door wide. With a quick nod of thanks, Kaz stepped inside, hurrying off to his bedroom where he kept a little stash of supplies for moments just like this.
They’d been gone for the day, away on a heist. Everything that could have gone wrong, went catastrophically wrong - Wylan’s bombs went off at the wrong time, Nina was delayed in knocking out a guard which caused the alarms to go off early, and Kaz himself had been cornered. The events were still being replayed over and over again, his mind trying to dissect every moment.

Among the Dregs it was unsaid, but Kaz was hers and Y/N was his. It was a known fact, engraved in stone. They were attached at the hip constantly, except for when it came to jobs. That was when Y/N was left behind to stay at the Slat, while Kaz ventured out with his Crows.
As difficult as it was, Kaz was vehemently stubborn when it came to separating his work and his personal life. To everyone else, it seemed like an unusual move. Y/N lived at the Slat, just like every other Dreg, with the exception that she did live with Kaz. To Kaz, it was purely logical. Being the Bastard of the Barrel meant little room for mistakes and no room for weakness. And love was purely that - a weakness. Y/N had Kaz wrapped around her finger, forever willing to do her bidding. The boy knew that if someone wanted to bring him to his knees, they’d go through her. After all, it’s what he would do.
The solution was simple: separate her from his work. The rules were laid out clear, and reluctantly abided by: no joining in on jobs and no leaving the Slat without Kaz or Jesper. Although heavily restrictive, it did its job. Y/N remained safe. Kaz knew those hours where he was away on a heist, was torture for the girl. The knowledge ate away at him everytime he was away.
But Saints, was returning to her worth the unease. With her, everything felt effortless. Y/N loved him - imperfections and all. Never once did she question Kaz when he was silent, trying to search for the correct way to translate his feelings to words. She never pushed him when it came to touch, silently understanding that he just couldn’t bring himself to, no matter how much he wanted it.
To Kaz, Y/N was a perfect escape from the world around him. An escape from the horrors of the Barrel, from the responsibilities that weighed so heavily on his shoulders. With her, he could simply relax and enjoy her company, everything from comfortable silence to staying up all night chatting. Y/N was a little slice of paradise within a cruel world.
————————————-
A vast blueprint was laid upon the table before Kaz. He leaned over it, palms splayed out on either side, as his eyes searched the layout, slowly formulating a plan in his mind. Their chosen route of escape was played over and over again within his mind. Something just wasn’t right.
“We need to get past these guards, without triggering the alarms.” Jesper stated, pointing to a door on the blueprint.
“That’s the thing,” Kaz groaned, looking up at his Crows which were situated around the table, “the guards will recognize all of us. We need someone fresh.”
“We could ask one of the Dregs to join us - Rotty maybe?” Inej questioned, her eyes examining the blueprint as well.
Kaz took a step away from the table and folded his arms over his chest, “No, this is too high stakes.”
“I could do it.” Y/N quietly commented.
Kaz whipped his head around, staring at the girl that at some point had walked up behind him. He’d grown so used to her constant presence that he hardly noticed when she walked up next to him. She felt like an extension of himself, always there.
“No, absolutely not.” Kaz muttered, stubbornly shaking his head.
“Seriously Kaz, think about it.” Y/N stepped in front of him and ran her fingers over the blueprint, “The guards wouldn’t recognize me. I’m exactly who you need on the job.”
Kaz clenched his jaw and sent the girl a glare. She was being stupid. They’d mutually agreed she’d never join in on a job.
Jesper raised an eyebrow dramatically, “She’s got a point. It would work.”
Of course they’d gang up on me. Kaz sternly glared at his friend, praying the boy would take it as a signal to back off.
“This isn’t up for discussion. My answer is no and that’s final.”
He could feel sets of eyes on him as he reached forward with trembling hands and rolled up the blueprint. Y/N’s safety was the one thing Kaz was not willing to barter with. He wouldn’t take the risk and he wouldn’t allow her to either. Tucking the blueprint under his arm, Kaz started to walk off towards his office but Y/N stepped into his path, hands up.
“Kaz can we talk about this?”
For a second he faltered, looking into Y/N’s intense eyes, but then he answered, “We agreed - no jobs.”
Brushing past Y/N, he marched up the staircase, determined to throw the girl off of her ridiculous idea. Soft footsteps echoed behind him, climbing the staircase as well. Kaz flung open the heavy door to his dimly lit office and retreated inside. The room was cluttered, as it always was when he was preparing for a heist. It reflected how his mind felt, a hectic mess of thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Collapsing into the chair behind his desk, Kaz stashed the blueprint away in a drawer.
The door to his office closed with a soft thud as Y/N stepped inside, her eyes carefully examining Kaz. She was waiting for him to calm down before resuming their argument. Like a puppet master, Y/N could delicately pull his strings, convince him to see her point of view once he’d had a second to cool his flaring temper.
“I want to help. You told me just last night how important this job was. I can do this, Kaz, just trust me.” Y/N’s statement was insistent, begging for a chance.
Kaz sighed and ran one gloved hand through his hair, “The job is not important.”
Y/N walked forward and leaned against Kaz’s desk, pointing an accusatory finger at him as she spoke, “Do not lie to me Kaz. You said last night this job is big, a boat load of kruge big. It’s worth the risks.”
“No amount of kruge is worth more than your life.” Kaz simply replied, but his voice was strained, raspy with emotion. Sitting up straighter in his chair, he clasped both hands over the crow’s head and appraised the girl.
She was fiery, her eyes passionately ablaze as she argued her case, “Saints Kaz, let me do something for once!” Y/N threw her hands into the air, animatedly moving them as she spoke, “You keep me holed up in here as though the moment I walk out that door someone would shoot me dead.”
Kaz abruptly rose from his chair and menacingly loomed over the girl, “You don’t get it. Men out there do want you dead. They want me and the little empire I’ve built to crumble. What’s the fastest way to bring a man to his knees?”
The question was open ended, sitting heavily in the air as Y/N fumbled for an answer. Unsatisfied with her silence, Kaz turned away with a tut and walked over to a window, overlooking the dark but lively streets of the city.
“You do it by finding his pressure points, his weakness. I’ve fought tooth and nail to exterminate every possible thing that could be used as leverage against me, except for you. Y/N, loving you is the only weakness I have.”
Kaz could barely make out their reflections in the dark window pane, but he could see her slowly approaching him. Glancing over his shoulder, their eyes met, silently trying to figure each other out.
Y/N’s voice was soft as she spoke, “We can’t hide away in here forever. I have to live Kaz.”
“They’d take you Y/N, keep you as ransom, torture or…” Kaz’s voice trailed off as he turned to face her. His chest felt heavy with the burden of translating his thoughts into words. “I can’t lose you.”
“But you’d come for me, find me, even if they’d hidden me away.” Y/N softly reached out and straightened the lapel of his jacket, her fingers ever so softly trailing along the hem.
With a trembling hand, Kaz touched her. His gloved fingers wrapped around her hand and moved it over his chest until they reached the spot where they could both feel his heart erratically thumping. Y/N stared up at him, hope filling her eyes as she waited for his response with bated breath.
“Always. Even if I was bleeding out, dying, taking in my last breath, I’d come for you. I’ll always come for you. I’d give anything to get you back: throw away my fortune, the Crow Club, and any chance I have at bringing down Pekka while I’m at it. Nothing matters more to me than you.”
Each word was spoken deliberately, a promise that nothing would stand between them - ever. The idea of Y/N gone, taken and played with like a pawn, made Kaz’s stomach lurch. He wouldn’t allow it - not now, not ever. Y/N wasn’t a plaything, a route for quick revenge, but that’s how they saw her. The dirty men of the Barrel didn’t look upon the couple with a smile, instead Kaz knew they looked on with a smirk, greed flooding their mind.
“And I’d do the same for you, nothing could keep me from coming back to you. But I want to join in on this job. Please, Kaz.”
How could he say no when she looked up at him like that? Looked at him like he was something extraordinary, like Kaz himself had hung the very moon in the sky who’s light now trickled through the window. She viewed him as a far better person than he truly was, Kaz knew that. But the way she gazed into his eyes, made him think that perhaps Kaz Rietveld was still lurking somewhere deep inside, that he wasn’t yet truly and wholly Kaz Brekker.
For a long time, he liked to think that the old Kaz was out there dead, floating in the ocean, tossed around in the waves, right beside Jordie. That he’d risen from his own ashes like a phoenix, and recreated himself, forged the legend that surrounded his name. Kaz knew it wasn’t true the moment Y/N wormed herself into his life. The piece of him that was so desperate to keep Y/N safe, was the same piece still mourning the death of his brother.
Looking down at Y/N, Kaz felt numb. He didn’t want to lose another person to the horrors of the city. It simply wasn’t an option, Kaz knew he’d snap if something happened to his girl. But keeping her cooped up inside wasn’t an option either. As per usual, she was right. She needed to live.
“Okay, you can come along. But you have to take shooting lessons with Jesper. I can’t have you walking into a heist with no way to defend yourself.”
Speaking those words, a deep feeling of dread settled into the bottom of Kaz’s stomach, but the wide grin splayed across Y/N’s face made it all worth it.
———————————-
“I’m telling you she’s good. Of course we had a few stray bullets,” Jesper waved his hands in the air to demonstrate his point, “but other than that, Y/N’s a lethal shot.”
“Thrilling.” Kaz muttered in response.
Together the three accomplices trekked down the dimly lit hallway, hurrying towards their exit.
“If you two don’t shut up, the guards will find us.” Inej complained, slinking along in the shadows.
Kaz’s heart felt as though it was in his throat. With every step, he thought only of her. She was waiting for them at the exit, ready to distract the guards and if the worst happened, knock them out. His chest felt tight as he held his breath as they neared the doors.
Two hefty guards were stationed in front of the dark oak doors that led to an outside courtyard. The very last hurdle. Hiding behind the last corner of the hallway, they huddled together and occasionally peeked around the corner. Quietly, Kaz pulled his pocket watch out. Almost time.
A resounding knock echoed on the other side of the door, paired with Y/N exclaiming, “Help! Please I’m injured.”
The guards grumbled for a moment before tugging open the heavy doors. Peeking around the corner, Kaz could see Y/N now standing in the doorway, slightly hunched over and clutching her side that was covered in blood. Fake blood of course. Y/N played her part impressively well. Portraying the image of an injured young woman, she pulled the gullible guards aside, luring them to a dark alley where she claimed to have been attacked.
As the guards disappeared out of the doorway, Kaz and the Crows crept out from their hiding spot, dashing for the doors. The nipping Kerch wind whipped around them once they stepped over the threshold. It felt so wonderful to be out, to have successfully completed the heist. Now, there was only to wait for Y/N’s return at the rendezvous point.
Together, they walked down a pitch black alley. The silence was haunting while waiting for his girl. Jesper was happy, practically bouncing on the balls of his feet at their success. The rendezvous point was a little courtyard, right off the dark street, squeezed between two towering buildings. Benches lined the sides of the yard and a marble statue dedicated to Ghezen stood in the middle. Each moment that passed without Y/N’s presence made Kaz feel sick, his stomach violently flipping.
Inej spoke, her voice cutting through the silence sharply, “I like her, Kaz.”
“What?” Kaz furrowed his eyebrows and gripped the crow’s head.
“Y/N,” she clarified, “she’s fun. You should y’know… let her hang around with us more.”
Kaz raised an eyebrow, glancing between his two friends who were grinning at him like fools.
“Yeah, it’s not like we’re bad influences or anything,” Jesper teased while absentmindedly twirling a revolver in one hand.
Kaz smiled lightly as his eyes searched the darkness before them for any sign of Y/N. “Glad she meets your approval.”
“Of course she does Kaz, she is good for you.” Inej commented, glancing up at Kaz.
Jesper let out a laugh, “She’s made you far easier to work with. The fact that she’s a bit of a badass is just the cherry on top.”
“A badass you say?”
Kaz’s eyes snapped to Y/N and a smile took over his face. She was here, right in front of him, unharmed. Quickly he walked forward, brushing past his friends, and only stopped once he was standing directly before the girl. His eyes roamed her face, beautifully highlighted by the moonlight. Y/N’s gaze met his, her eyes softening.
“I’m fine Kaz, I’m safe.” Of course she knew he was racked with worry. “I lured them away, they didn’t think anything of it. Idiots.”
Kaz couldn’t help but smile and his hands hovered, desperately wanting to touch her, to ensure she was really there. Without a second thought, he lurched forward and wrapped his arms tightly around her frame. Oh Saints, she was safe. Y/N hesitated for a slight moment and then tightly hugged him back. The feeling of her wrapped in his arms, safe and sound, was heavenly. The soft rise and fall of her steady breathing was comforting, lowering Kaz’s spiking heart rate. It overpowered the other disgusting sensations that unfortunately came with touch.
When Kaz pulled away, his hands lingering on her shoulders, Y/N spoke, “I see you got your target.”
Her eyes focused on the bag of stolen goods laying on the cobblestones behind Kaz.
“I’m just glad I have you.”

Y/N lifted her head as a trio entered her office. The room was shrouded in black satin - the chairs, the curtains, everything. Light was dim, a small cluster of candles flickered on her desk which was situated in the middle of the room. Behind her desk was her large, high backed, black chair - her throne. Anyone who ended up in the room with her was either a blundering fool or was daring enough to view her as an equal.
The room reflected the aesthetic that her group was known for - The Black Widows - a web of seductresses, reeling in unsuspecting merchers and taking all they had. They were notorious, quickly rising among the ranks of the Barrel, even then, with their methods known, people still foolishly fell into their traps.
A young girl, Celine, announced their presence, “Ms. L/N - Mr. Kaz Brekker and two of his crew.”

The rumor on the street was that Kaz Brekker didn’t need a reason. Well, Y/N L/N certainly thought she didn’t need a reason every time she entered Kaz’s little home at two in the morning. He’d grown accustomed to his door creaking open at unsaintly hours, her feet pitter pattering inside and then slowly pushing the door shut behind her.
He always laid there in his bed, silently listening to the girl, judging whether she just needed silent company or someone to talk to. The crows were notorious for unhealthy sleeping patterns and she was no exception. Y/N often sat in a chair, breathing softly, and enjoying Kaz’s quiet company as he slept. Other times she cried, over a job or some old memory, but he always sat with her. Letting her rant, get out all of her feelings, while he sat there, quiet but attentive.

“Lucky for me, I’ve got another Fjerdan to confirm your information.”
As Y/N climbed the stairs to the deck, her palm sliding along the wooden railing, she could hear Kaz’s gritty voice booming from above. She’d joined the job at the last moment after a last ditch effort of begging Kaz to allow her to join. Of course he was hesitant bringing along someone so fresh, new and untested, but relying upon the intelligence of a Fjerdan fugitive was not something Dirtyhands wanted to do. And so here Y/N was, on a bobbing ship bound for the country she left so long ago.
“Don’t you trust me demjin?” The question was a snarl, one of an animal bound and caged, silently fearful of there being no escape in sight.
As Y/N stepped onto the main deck, light pouring over her form, she felt as though she were basking in the feeling of home. That rough accent traveling on the high sea winds was a jolting reminder of home, of the family she once had. Of the small village she’d once lived in, just a few miles from the coast, wedged between frozen rivers and thick pine forests. She could nearly smell the pine sap in the air, the chilling breeze seeping into her bones.
And as she opened her eyes, she swore she was hallucinating for a moment. Squinting at the blond burly man, she allowed her gaze to roam over his face. Those features were foreign yet so familiar. On the outside was a war hardened soldier, fighting for a country he blindly pledged loyalty too. Fighting too young. But underneath, Y/N could still peer at the little boy she had grown up beside. The lopsided grin on the squarely set jaw, now clenched so tightly he looked like he might snap his own teeth off. Ignoring the shaven head, she could still remember the wavy blond locks he’d had, that seemed to shine like gold during the summer months.
It was Matthias and somehow at the same time, not him at all.
Y/N stood frozen, simply staring at her childhood friend who stared back with a sense of disbelief. All she wanted to do was run to his side, fall to her knees, and hug him until her arms gave out. But she couldn’t. They weren’t little naive children anymore, running through a field of snow as reindeer migrated through the village. Their grubby hands no longer sought out freshly baked cookies on the countertops. She no longer braided her hair like her mother had done, no longer placed a ruby red ribbon in the braid like the one Matthias had given her.
Deep inside, Y/N knew they both changed that night the Grisha had struck their village. An eye for an eye seemed to be the one thing shared between drüskelle and drüsje. When her father had been struck down, heart stopped in his own chest, her mother had fled with Y/N’s hands in hers. Running far far away from that quaint village. Away from their cozy patchwork quilts, made of whatever pieces of spare fabric could be found at the time of their making. Away from the tiny cabin that had been their home, that had provided shelter during blizzards, warmth during the winters. Away from her father lying dead on the ground, eyes blankly staring up at the sky. Away from Matthias, wherever he was.
Staring into his eyes now, she knew something horrible had happened. The blues within his eyes had once reminded her of the spring melt, when clear blue water came streaming down from the snow-capped mountains. It was the sign of new life, of rebirth in Fjerda. Those soft blues were like the little tiny wildflowers that would sprout over the tundra, only to be grazed by horses or livestock. But now, there was no hint of softness in those blue irises. They were hard. Solid like ice that could run for miles underfoot. No matter how long you chiseled away, it was ice. Endless ice. That pale, nearly white, blue - unrelenting to any outside force.
“Y/N,” Matthias breathed out, barely audible over the howling winds.
But Kaz heard that single word, his hawk-like eyes flashing between the two Fjerdans. His jaw was set tight, muscles twitching every few seconds. “You two know each other?”
Nodding, Y/N took another step forward until she was standing by Kaz’s side, whose long coat flapped wildly in the wind like a large black sail, pushing them towards the icey country.
Matthias’s eyes stirred with something Y/N couldn’t quite place her finger on. Was it concern, a longing for their childhood, happiness over their reunion? And when she glanced at Kaz, she couldn’t describe his expression either. His dark eyes, like billowing storm clouds, seemed to swirl with anger, resentment… jealousy even.
“We grew up together in Fjerda,” Y/N clarified, reminiscing with nearly a smile upon her face. “His house was just a few down from mine.”
“How do you know this demjin?” Matthias’s gaze bore into hers as he questioned her in Fjerdan, voice heavily laced with concern.
Heart thudding in her chest, Y/N fumbled over her own words. It felt wholly impossible to describe whatever her relationship was with the Bastard of the Barrel. It wasn’t friendship yet it also wasn’t more… just that odd inbetween. Mutual appreciation?
In Fjerdan, she mumbled, “I met him in Ketterdam. He’s taught me the ropes.”
Scrunching up his nose and crossing his arms, Kaz harshly snapped, “I am right here, you know.”
But the two Fjerdans pointedly ignored him, now in the midst of a silent argument, staring at each other with fiery eyes as they did as children.
“He is not good for you.”
Y/N scoffed as her hands fell into place on her hips. “And you think you know what’s good for me? Years after we went our different paths.”
“He is an evil man,” Matthias snarled. “I can see it in those soulless eyes.”
“Don’t you even start!”
“I was imprisoned, Y/N! All because his Grisha pet claimed me a slaver.”
The last word of Matthias’s proclamation was spoken in clear Ravkan, as perfect a pronunciation as the Fjerdan man could muster. It was a clear message to Kaz as to the topic the two were discussing in their native language. Matthias’s eyes gazed at hers, eyebrows slightly furrowed as though he were begging. Begging for her to see his side, to understand why he was so concerned.
But Y/N simply shook her head, glancing at Kaz and speaking in Ravkan, “There must have been a misunderstanding.”
Matthias’s face grew red, the shade of beets her mother had harvested in the summer months. Standing up, he furiously reached towards Y/N fumbling to grab ahold of her wrist. “These Ravkan and Kerch people are horrible.”
“That is quite enough from you, Helvar,” Kaz snapped once more and with a swing of his cane, brought it roughly down upon the Fjerdan man’s shoulder.
The first day had been rough, taut tension rippling through the air between the Fjerdan and the Kerch as Y/N now liked to call them. The two men that marked the two different lives she had lived. Matthias with the naive girl who not once even wondered of a life outside her little Fjerdan village. The girl who made sticks into swords and rocks into cannon balls. And they’d played on those snowy fields, each commanding their own invisible army and conducting their own duels. Of course, like the little gentleman he was, a quiet and reserved boy, far too timid for the games the other boys played, Matthias had always let her win.
And now there was the current version of her, the one whose life was marked by Kaz. That naive little girl had no clue what to do when arriving upon the docks at Ketterdam, her mother gravely ill from the tedious journey. And when she was left all alone, stranded and lonely, not a person to turn to for comfort on those grimy streets, was when Kaz appeared. Practically a knight in shining armor, someone to guide her through the city that rode that fine line between life and death.
In a way, he’d saved her. Silently directed her along the easier path, placing a few kruge in her pocket when she needed it. Whatever she needed, he provided some way, somehow. That was when her loyalty turned away from Fjerda and it’s gleaming snowy fields, her mind turned away from Matthias. And after that, it was Kaz… just Kaz.
Now as the ship cut through the harsh waters, ever heading more north, she could hardly stand the two men glaring daggers at each other. Part of Y/N thought, if given the chance, they’d willingly throttle each other to death. It would simply be a matter of who could throw the other overboard first. And as mildly entertaining as it sounded, that was one thing she did not want to witness.
By her side, Kaz fidgeted with a large padlock, tossing the rusted object between his hands as he worked those fingers, picking and relocking it. He liked to think he was a figure of confidence going into a job, the commander standing proud at the front of an army, head held high and shoulders pinned back. But really, he was a bit of an anxious mess. Everyone around just pointedly avoided the topic. Kaz always had his thing going. Something to work with his hands, something to exercise his brain.
“Can you show me?” Y/N found herself asking. For the longest time she admired the ways he could work a lock as though it were an extension of himself. How with just a few gentle clicks, like a puppet master pulling strings, anything would open to do Kaz’s bidding.
Kaz nodded, one corner of his lips turning up into what could resemble a smug smile. Outstretching her hand, she wrapped her fingers around the padlock he’d dropped into her palm. The metal was smooth under her touch, polished but tarnished by the rough patches of rust. It was like a little secret held within her hand.
Matthias, whose head was turned towards the churning waves, staring off into the distance for any sign of the icey coastline, chirped sarcastically, “In Fjerda, breaking into locked places is a crime. Is it not that way in Kerch?”
Y/N sent a scathing glare in his direction, just like how she used to when they were children. A smug grin sprouted upon Matthias’s lips, the same boyish look he had as a child. Even back then, they butted heads - the type of friendship anomaly where both were so different, yet so frustratingly alike. A sudden urge rose inside Y/N to poke her tongue out at the boy, but she didn’t. Instead, she rolled the padlock in her hands, cradling it like a precious jewel.
“Picking locks is an art,” Kaz began, folding both gloved hands in his lap as he learnt forward. “It takes time and practice, but it’s all in the hands. Locks are no different from people. With just a nice, light touch, a flick of the fingers, you can bend the object to your will.”
Gazing up into Kaz’s eyes, she thought he was more like the locks than anything else. Vehemently guarded and yet, the softness was still there. Way down beneath the tough exterior, vulnerable secrets held closely to the heart. If only she could scratch away at that, expose the truth beneath so she could know. Know Kaz for who he truly was, not this scary legend around him. But rather the true Kaz, the part of him that reigned over the motivations, the values, the reasons why he did what he did.
That was all she wanted in the world. To get to know Kaz. To learn the secrets of his trade, model herself in his image. To be talented enough to pick locks, twirl guns, and throw knives. To be someone worthy of being a Crow.
Each of the members of their group took turns peering through those glasses to examine the prisoner wagon rattling along the road on its way to the palace gates.
“This is genius,” Jesper breathed out, his eyes wide as he stared through the glasses.
All of them were jittery, adrenaline running through their veins that was nearly as cold as the Fjerdan ice. It chilled them to their core, but also stirred something inside. A deep wanting, a desire to make this whole job a success. To walk out of Fjerda in one piece, return to Ketterdam where their hands would be full of kruge.
“This is idiotic,” Matthias grumbled, crossing his arms over his chest as he leaned back in his chair. His nose wrinkled up in disgust at the rather unappealing food placed in front of him, but Y/N would be willing to bet her life, some of that disgust was also meant for Kaz.
“How so?” Inej inquired as her thin frame practically leaned over the railing, staring at the prisoner wagon that slowed to a roll by the guard’s station.
“It would be,” the Fjerdan man admitted. “If Kaz knew everything about the Ice Court.”
An icey silence fell over the group as Matthias looked happily smug, a devilish grin upon his lips as he stared at the high walls of the Ice Court. The Crows all glanced at one another, fear sparking in their eyes at the thought of the Fjerdan destroying their heist.
Clenching her fists, Y/N sat up higher in her seat as she stared down her childhood friend. “Matthias if you don’t tell us, I swear to Djel I’ll-”
“He’s bluffing,” Kaz casually announced, wholly unbothered by Matthias’s little drama show.
“What?”
“Your dear Matthias wouldn’t risk withholding information to put you in danger. And he’s certainly not clever enough to think of blackmail.”
“Demjin,” he muttered under his breath, not daring to glance at Kaz’s face.
“Can you two just stop it?”
Both men practically jumped in their seats like nervous rabbits, staring at Y/N, and everyone else curiously watched the confrontation.
“I can’t go on with the two of you at each other’s throats,” Y/N begged, glancing between both of them. Matthias shifted uneasily in his seat, glancing back yet again at the large stone walls lying just down the road.
“A truce, please? You don’t have to like each other, or even think of one another as friends. But please just stop snapping.”
Tense silence hovered in the air as Kaz and Matthias both eyed one another, their jaws tense and heads held highly with confidence as if both were Kings on a chessboard. But ultimately both nodded, giving in to Y/N’s plea for the same reason - to please her. Neither wanted to see her upset, eyes wide and voice wavering as it was now. They both treasured the times when she smiled so widely that her eyes sparkled. Both aimed to see her happy, as carefree as a butterfly crafted of the most intricate hues and patterns fluttering in the wind.
Perhaps the Fjerdan and the Kerch weren’t so different after all.

Kaz didn’t know it then, but he shot himself in the foot the moment he hired Olivar Nabrevsky. At first, it seemed like a good, solid business decision. The Dregs were short a few men and Olivar easily filled some of the gaps. Now, Kaz wished he could go back in time and kick that man out of his office when he came crawling in, begging on his knees for a job.
“Just talk to her.” Jesper stated, taking a sip from his drink.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about, Jesper.” Kaz snapped, sending a glare at the boy seated next to him.
The two were seated together in the Crow Club. Empty glasses covered their table, the two going through the drinks quite quickly.
