Pony Jackson

It’s August so I’m revisiting some of the middle grade books I love here’s a list of the ones that I still think about
-Percy Jackson
Because duh I loved Greek mythology even before reading this so I was always going to like it
- literally any Carl Hiaasen book
Chomped is my favorite they are filled with cool animal facts with a focus on preserving nature-mostly take place in Florida
-sisters grim
Twisted fairy tales in a modern setting the main character is very not like other girls but she can’t really help that she was written by a man
- doll bones by holly black (yes the fairy lady)
Cute coming of age book with a hunted china doll, I’ve always loved the old china dolls so it was nice to have a book about a non evil one
- the iron trial (I literally can never spell the name of the series) also by holly black and someone else???
I loved the main character it’s like harry potter meets avatar but it’s less homophobic and has more representation ( I still think the main character is gay)
Book Review
Book Title: Amari and the Night Brothers
Author: B.B. Alston
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Notes: I picked this book because I’d heard good things about it. After reading, I gave it three stars. It’s not a bad book. I’d read it to a class of third or fourth graders in a heartbeat. I think they’d love it. But it’s not my favorite. It took me time to get into it. I think it was mostly the fact it was in present tense that irked me. I hate present tense…
I had to get the audio book. I couldn’t get into the ebook. Sometimes that happens. 🤷♀️The audio reader was pretty good.
The book reminds me a lot of the Percy Jackson books, which is a good thing. It’s about a girl (Amari) who wants to find out what happened to her missing brother. She learns pretty quickly that her big brother got mixed up with a whole other world!
Again, for a middle grade book, this is pretty good. I’d use it as a read aloud for upper elementary or middle school. I don’t know that I’ll continue with the series.
Book Review
Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Another middle grade book! And another one that I would read happily to 3rd to 5th graders. I think it’s really neat. That is exploring a different culture, one that I really didn’t know much about. It’s definitely following in the footsteps of Percy Jackson, and of Rick Riordan’s other series, The Kane Chronicles. He wrote the introduction at the beginning of this book, and it’s Rick Riordan presents so it’s definitely meant to be following in the footsteps of those series.
The Kane Chronicles is one of my all-time favorite book series. I like them even more than Percy Jackson, and most of that is to do with the audiobooks. The reader for Aru Shah is not as great as the readers for The Kane Chronicles, but I do recommend the audiobook.
All that being said, I gave this a 3.5 out of 5. It was a fun story, it was interesting to learn about Hindu mythology, and I thought Aru was a really interesting and engaging main character. The reason I’m giving it 3.5 instead of 4 is mostly because of the little pop culture references. Those always take me out of a story and well. I think that the upper elementary and middle school yours would find them funny, I really don’t care that the supernatural council gets together once every full moon and also every time Game of Thrones is on. I think that’s kind of silly, and I think it dates the book. Kids reading this 10 years from now, might not know what Game of Thrones is.
I did like this book more than Amari and the Night Brothers, but I think this is going to be the last middle grade book I read for a little while. I know there are other books in this series but I don’t think I’m going to continue reading them. It was nice to get a taste. I’ve seen this book around for a while now, and I’ve been wanting to try it, but I am not invested enough in Aru’s story to continue.
