Parrots learn to make video calls to chat with other parrots, then develop friendships with each other
Researchers from Northeastern University, in conjunction with scientists from MIT and the University of Glasgow, conducted a study exploring the impact of teaching a group of domesticated birds to communicate using tablets and smartphones. The findings indicate that utilizing video calls may assist parrots in mimicking the communication patterns observed in wild birds, potentially enhancing their behavior and overall well-being in the homes of their owners.

The first known online transaction took place in 1971 when students at Stanford University used the ARPANET (a precursor to the internet) to arrange the sale of a small amount of marijuana. The transaction was between students in the artificial intelligence lab at Stanford and students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). However, it doesn't technically qualify as a transaction because no money was exchanged online; the network was solely used to coordinate a meeting place. So, what was the first thing ever sold online?

“We need to be put in check! And whatever form that takes, I’m game. If we can’t accept limitations, we’re boundary-less, we’re no better than the bad guys.”
A Current Very First-World Problem With My Life:
I want to go to MIT far more than is reasonable, considering my chances are slim enough that I don't know if I'm applying.
On Procedure
so my MIT interview is this friday at Denny's at 8:30 at night. which is kind of awful.
what the hell do you do when you're meeting at restaurant? order tea and sit there? because that's what I want to do. but you should tell me what to do because this is an unfortunate circumstance.
On MIT
okay guys. it's going to be hard, but I'm going to try to only say this once. and I think the most appropriate time to do so is now, when it's 4:00 am, I just got back to my dorm, I'm too sick to actually talk, I met more people than I can count today, I have to catch a taxi in two hours anyways, I'm covered in weird dust and I'm bleeding kind of much.
ahem
This place is going to be my home. And I'm so happy about it.
On Snowage
blizzards are fun and Boston looks post-apocalyptic
also the Institute-wide snowball fight was a thing and there were war horns and we charged into battle with no clear objective but carnage
the wind and also our enemies howled, so good day.
A Concern
so I mean I'm pretty sure everyone's going to be okay and I'm on the other side of campus but practice has been delayed because there's a man with a rifle and body armor in the main MIT corridor. police have been called and everything but we're sheltering in place until further notice. There's just no reason for someone to have a gun and also body armor on campus. In other news, I like you people a lot, dear readers, even if I don't talk to you much.
In Which Things are Cool as Fuck
today was the best fucking math lecture ever and I forgot how GOD DAMN AWESOME IT IS to be excited about learning shit
a lot of the systems we're dealing with right now come in the form of input/response differentials, so today our 18.03 prof was just like I'm gonna show you why you should think this is awesome. So we worked out and talked about how different kinds of lightbulbs work differently and why the voltage gaps change the way they do over the course of time and highlights involved all of us collectively gasping as we watched the square wave work magic on the sinusoidal plot of voltage as he turned on a light and I mean the math of it is beautiful but not solid me rambling material, so the other relevant thing I'll tell you is you can code information into fluorescent lightbulbs. This guest meche/ee faculty member who was chilling with us for the day literally plugged a CD player into a light, so we couldn't hear anything but it was transmitting frequencies through the light apparently because he took this hand-sized computer dealio that was connceted to this cheap speaker and showed us and then just pointed it at the light and it read the light and played back the music. Because everything is magic.
and now I'm happy, because I got to remember why I do this. i just wish I could describe this place as something other than "hard as fuck" without doing that whole "i'm gonna make a douchebragcontest out of how much work i have and how little sleep i get and ps i'm an elitist prick" deal, but I can't so just know that today was wonderful because sometimes it's easy to just make a sport out of hating things but guys
guys you have to remember
The world, due in part to the people in it, is a fucking incredible place, and you should always want to know more about it.

Years ago, administration allowed the tallest building on MIT campus to have lights installed in the bottom of all the windows to display an American flag as a gesture of hope after 9/11. What administration didn't realize is students also set up all the lights to have a full range of color optons and be controlled by a separate server, so since then the Green Building has lit up a couple times on memorable occasions as a massive game of tetris, pong, and even a one-pixel Mario game that students could come by and play on one of the largest outdoor screens ever. But last night I walked past and turned to take this picture. The flag is back, and it's visible from nearly the whole Boston waterfront, and it's almost directly across from the attack site and it's my favorite.
On Lockdown
he's caught and we're not in a state of emergency anymore and I'm not going to write about last night because I don't want to but thank you, thank you so much for all the phone calls and texts and messages from people who care about me and everyone here.
Boston is crazy strong and I'm again I'm feeling just so proud to be a part of this community. The Green Building now shows a black ribbon to honor all those lost, and especially Sean Collier, who gave his life protecting us.

Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light. :)

the MIT student newspaper is officially taking 0% of your shit
What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.

as our MIT community mourns its eight loss this year, may we remember that no pset or project can be more important than helping the people around us in need
i feel like there’s this misconception that all metal is about being angry and miserable, but sometimes it’s just a bunch of guys dressed as dnd dwarves singing about digging a hole
