Pjo Artemis - Tumblr Posts
Friendly reminder that’s actually kinda friendly this time-
Artemis, protecter of girls took the sky off Annabeth chase. She’s still a goddess and had 0 obligation to do it but she did.

Friendly reminder that Zöe nightshade was older than Artemis and the first hunter.

thank you for talking about this. Uncle Rick may be a fantastic writer and I love his work, but I can't ignore the fact that there's a lot of misogyny and I don't think he understands what the deal with Artemis and the hunters forswearing the company of men forever. He writes them all like bitches and frankly, I hate that. As much as I admire Rick Riordan and adore his books, I can't ignore the fact that he has a problem with writing things and characters like these

ive always had issues with the way rick portrays artemis and the hunters, but this literally has me pulling my hair out
the way he wrote them as bitchy man-haters who believe love is weakness is just so… written by a man. if you go back and reread the scenes with them in titans curse its so prevalent. theyre made out to be spiteful and kind of ridiculous, but of course in the end zoë tells percy that he’s different from the rest of men! its just so obvious its written from the perspective of a man who just doesnt really get it.
the hunt was never a place to escape romance, its a safe haven for WOMEN. it always was. the way this fact is ignored in the pjo text is incredibly ignorant. emmie and jo (a lesbian couple) being kicked out of the hunt is infuriating because its so antithetical to its purpose- a place where women could escape the societal pressure to get married to, rely on, and devote their life to a man (maybe this descriptor of marriage sounds a bit dramatic now but this was its purpose in ancient greece)
ricks problem is that he views the “virgin maiden” label through a modern lens, which would imply not having sex with anyone (man or women). but in ancient greek the word for virgin means unmarried girl, and was used for women who were not married or tied to any man. it’s not that these women were celibate or asexual, its that they wanted to preserve that they would lose in a heterosexual marriage. this is why reducing the story of artemis and the hunters to “disliking romance” is so dumb and ignorant. not to mention the significant lesbian motifs in the stories of artemis and her hunters! even if they aren’t explicit, the implications are strong, as are the cultural ties
and lastly there are stories where artemis is involved with orion and callisto. all myths are fuzzy when trying to determine which retelling is the most “legit,” and clearly rick picks and chooses the ones that work best for him, but they both contradict her being aromantic. or sorry… aromatic 🙄
