Very impressed by this particular installation by Jennifer Steinkamp – it really looks meditative, even in the video. If I have the chance, I will visit one of her exihibitions/installations!
On Sunday I'm launching Candy Chang's international Before I Die project in Kawaura. It's Japan's second installation of the project, and I'm excited to bring it to my rural community. I'm especially looking forward to the potential social impact of this piece. Kawaura is a shrinking, elderly community of 5,000 people, so "before I die, I want to..." becomes a more immediate statement here. Beyond the elderly, I hope this project encourages the local young people to dream big. Amakusa is a somewhat poor, isolated island, and many of my students when asked what they want to be, reply office worker, nurse, or farmer. There's nothing wrong with those careers, but it's always nurse, never doctor. I hope this wall makes them think deeper about the possibilities in their lives. It goes up on Sunday and stays up for the month of September.
The "Before I Die" wall went up on 9/7 with the surprise help of local post office workers and an elderly bar owner. Day by day it continues to fill up. Living in a spread out town of 5,000, I never thought people would take to it so quickly, but I'm so happy they have. Check out the construction shots and get more info here.

"Before I die I want to..." Written on a blackboard placed at the Kawaura-machi Nakamura Community Center are those words along with the hopes of local residents. Zachary Johnson, twenty-five from Illinois in the US, working as an assistant language teacher in Kawaura, created the wall. According to Johnson, it's part of a public art project which began in New Orleans, US. In over forty countries, various people have installed the same kind of project, he said. Some hopes written by Kawaura residents were, "I want to become rich", "I want to have lots of dogs", etc. Johnson stated, "I want to give people a way to express the dreams they normally keep silent." The piece can be seen until the 29th.
I wrapped up the Before I Die project two weeks ago today. Throughout the month I was surprised at the speed at which the wall filled up -- about every two days. The responses came mostly from young students, and it was a great joy to read their responses. Though they've grown up on an isolated, struggling island, their dreams were filled with the humor, warmth, and excitement I would expect from children anywhere. I was happy to give them and other people a chance to speak about their dreams. The project is featured permanently on the Before I Die website.

Christopher C. W. Sutton. Untitled. Mixed media, acrylic on canvas armband. Flex Gallery, Grand Rapids, MI. 2016.
For the next twelve weeks I am displaying works by six artists on my left arm in a project titled Flex Gallery. Currently I’m on my third day of wearing this arm band, created by SCAD alumnus Chris Sutton (@christophersutton). I’ve sent out five more blank canvas bands to local and national artists specializing in collage, comics, fibers, ceramics, painting, and printmaking. I expect each band will look radically different from the last, and I can’t wait to see what everyone creates. I will be featuring interviews and additional work by each artist during their two-week run, so stay tuned.

Art vs Artist 2022. A selection of my work/opportunities for my existing work from this past year. I’m so proud of what I was able to accomplish, it was definitely the year of public art and my most successful year as a small business owner/artist. A lot of murals and art installations around the Fraser Valley as well as being flown to the unveiling of the mural I designed for New Orleans. I had my first solo exhibition and painted my largest work to date. I created a lot of designs for Indigenous-focused campaigns this year, partnering with many businesses. It is incredible to have the opportunity to use my artwork to make a difference. I feel very blessed to be able to make a living being creative and for all the opportunities that I’ve had. I am also thankful for the holidays as I’m currently on the butt end of art fatigue/burnout and I’ve pulled back a little bit from social media to keep my mental health in check. In transparency, it isn’t always sunshine and roses and I think it’s important to share that. I’m very excited about what the new year will bring. New murals and projects are being planned and I’m currently working on a personal piece that I’m very excited to share, it is a goal of mine to create more personal art in the coming year. In 2023 I will be relaunching my online shop so keep your eye out for that. I am so thankful to everyone who supports my work, from the companies I’ve been blessed to work with to the individuals who commission me or purchase my prints to those that like and share my work with others. It means the world. Happy New Year to ya’ll, see you next year!
