Writer Questions

The Basics

1.     Do you listen to music when you write? Usually. Sometimes I don't but most of the time I do.

2.     Are you a pantser or plotter? A little bit of both lol.

3.     Computer or pen and paper? I use an app on my phone to do a lot of my stuff but there's nothing like handwriting a particularly moving scene.

4.     Have you ever been published, or do you want to be published? Being published would be neat. It's not my ultimate goal.

5.     How much writing do you get done on an average day? About a page. It's fairly sporadic.

6.     Single or multiple POV? Single.

7.     Standalone or series? Series.

8.     Oldest WIP - post-apocalypse digimon story

9.     Current WIP - see above as well as various smaller oneshots lol

10.  Do you set yourself deadlines? Never!

The Specifics

11.  Books and/or authors who influenced you the most: Jay Bonansinga

12.  Describe your perfect writing space: outside in autumn

13.  Describe your writing process from idea to polished: for school/work it’s just kinda one and done lol. personal projects just never seem to get fully done.

14.  How do you deal with self-doubts? Self-doubts in writing generally don’t affect me because I don’t really write with the purpose of sharing with other people. I write for myself. Who cares if it’s bad or dumb or not well-written? It’s for me.

15.  How do you deal with writer’s block? Turn to another project.

16.  How many drafts do you need until you’re satisfied with a project? Forever.

17.  What writing habits or rituals do you have? Not sure I really have any. When I first started writing it was only by hand, with a black pen, and in cursive. Over time that grew to be blue pen/cursive, back to black pen/cursive, then in pencil/print, then black pen/print. Now it’s whatever is on hand.

18.  If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be, and what would you write about? Prb @jumper-zuzu

19.  How do you keep yourself motivated? If one thing isn’t working out try something else. I’m writing a personal world. I control how things go.

20.  How many WIPs and story ideas do you have? Countless.

The Favourites

21.  Who is/are your favourite character(s) to write?: Folks with dangerous backstories, folks that eventually HAVE to ask for help after exhausting all other options.

22.  Who is/are your favourite pairing(s) to write?: Chicago PD fanfic, Adam Ruzek and OC Phoebe Driscoll.

23.  Favourite author: In no particular order - CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien, Philppa Gregory, Stephen King, Edgar Allen Poe, Ted Dekker, Andrew Klavan

24.  Favourite genre to write and read: action/adventure, sci-fi, fantasy, heroism

25.  Favourite part of writing: the bolt of inspiration that makes an entire scene come together.

26.  Favourite writing program: PureWriter (samsung app)

27.  Favourite line/scene: “You don’t know what I have, but I WILL tell you, despair is definitely not on the list.”

28.  Favourite side character: Calumon (no I refuse to explain)

29.  Favourite villain: Lucemon

30.  Favourite idea you haven’t started on yet: I had a concept where a child in the care of an OC was tragically lost and it spurred OC to a line of anti-heroism.

The Dark

31.  Least favourite part of writing: the spans of time where nothing seems to be happening

32.  Most difficult character to write: romantic interactions (no seriously I’ve never dated so I have no idea how to write romance situations)

33.  Have you ever killed a main character?: Not yet. Side characters and enemies, but not a main yet.

34.  What was the hardest scene you ever had to write?: I’m still trying to figure out a first date situation in a Chicago PD fic.

35.  What scene/story are you least looking forward to writing?: killing an MC.

The Fun

36.  Last sentence you wrote: “You know I’m taking all that as a ‘no’ to my question, right?”

37.  First sentence of your current WIP: The sounds of the house collapsing behind her barely reached her over the sound of the storm.

38.  Weirdest story idea you’ve ever had: post-apocalypse digimon

39.  Weirdest character concept you’ve ever had: cousins-turned-sisters, opposite in every single way.

40.  Share some backstory for one of your characters: Phoebe lives with her uncle on a ranch in America. Her sister disappeared in a bad thunderstorm while sophomores in high school and 2 years later Phoebe still battles with the guilt of believing she was to blame for the disappearance. Her uncle, fearful for the blatant social withdrawal of his adopted daughter, signs them up for a foreign exchange program.

The Rest of It

41.  Any advice for new/beginning/young writers?: Do it for you. Above all, do it for yourself.

42.  How do you feel about love triangles?: Useful in certain situations but I find them to be far too used.

43.  What do you do if/when characters don’t follow the outline?: Follow the characters. Better yet let the characters write the outline.

44.  How much research do you do?: A lot. I do whatever I can to make sure I’m writing believable situations that actually work as they should. I don’t like to use a lot of “It’s fiction! It works because I say so!”

45.  How much world building do you do?: a LOT lol. I can go for HOURS.

46.  Do you reread your own stories?: All the time.

47.  Best way to procrastinate: Listen to music and stare at a blank page.

48.  What’s the most self-insert character/scene you’ve ever written?: When I first started writing (6th grade) I LITERALLY REWROTE episode 1 of Digimon Frontier to replace Kouji. Hey, everybody starts somewhere.

49.  Which character would you most want to be friends with, if they were real?: Takuya Kanbara, prb. Dude is just out there and I’m a lot like that. Kouji would have his hands full trying to keep us wrangled.

50.  Any last words?: Writing is an outlet. Writing is limitless. Writing is yours.

40 Character Questions: Pt2

HEY YO @jumper-zuzu IT’S HEEEEEEERE

Found a list of character questionnaires and ask games by @quilloftheclouds. List here: https://at.tumblr.com/ofcharactersandplayers/i-just-wanted-to-say-ive-been-using-your-oc/4g7zl18wpgoj

I plan to do all of them for various characters. Here’s the first one I completed.

How does your character sleep? Peacefully, fitfully? What position do they sleep in? What is their typical bedding like? Phoebe has a strict wind down/sleep routine and sometimes has to rely on sleep-aids like melatonin. Fitful sleep, and even on nights when she isn't up and down from nightmares it's often not restful. Typically falls asleep on her back but often wakes up tangled in blankets or in the fetal position. Simple minimalist bedding, no decorative pillows, heather grey jersey sheets, black comforter, grey pillowcases, firm mattress and soft pillows.

Does your oc have dreams or nightmares? What are they like? Is there a recurring one? Nightmares. Most often she is running through the woods during a severe thunderstorm searching for her cousin (adopted sister) Melanie (missing, presumed dead) and running away from something very bad.

How easy to annoy is your oc? Do they have common pet-peeves or are they stoic in response to everything? What is their reaction if the source doesn’t stop? She remains stoic in most situations. Not very easy to annoy her at all. She keeps to herself enough that avoiding annoyance is not difficult.

How does your oc view housework? Do they absolutely hate it? Do they enjoy having their surroundings neat and tidy or do they not notice? Phoebe appreciates the structure that daily chores provide. She stays active and stays busy, and she rather needs the routine to keep her going. Living on a ranch she has plenty to do. Feeding/taking care of animals, housework, helping maintain some of the equipment used on the ranch, the housework keeps her steady.

Your oc has to make something for an art exhibition. What would they make? How terrible is it? Would they enjoy making it? Phoebe would make a collection of origami pieces that Melanie taught her how to do. She does all right at it but she has never reached the level of skill Melanie had. It would be less enjoyment and more just a tribute to her sister.

What is your oc’s vocabulary like? Does it match the way they talk? How would you describe their speech? She's not one to waste words. She's precise, mature for her age, and would rather focus on getting things done than standing around talking about the task at hand. She'd rather listen than speak.

How would you describe your oc’s voice? Do they have an accent? Do you have any voice claims for them? No discernible accent. Mellow and soft-spoken. She has a beautiful singing voice but after Melanie's disappearance she refused to sing in front of others again.

Is your oc more likely to follow instructions exactly, throw them out and figure it out on their own, or make it all up? What are the results like? For the most part she does like to go by directions but, if things don't work or something doesn't make sense, she's not afraid to improvise.

Is your oc afraid of touch or do they actively seek it out? Is there a reason for this? What are the exceptions? Does not seek physical touch and more often than not finds it hard to accept or simply disagreeable. Does not like to RECEIVE physical touch but will GIVE it to folks she knows well enough if they need it. Ever since the disappearance of Melanie, Phoebe has felt to blame for it, which over time has caused her to isolate herself and not allow people near her. Subconsciously she believes if she lets anyone too close, they will also come to some sort of harm.

How is your oc about medical care? Do they avoid any form of healthcare that they can, do they seek it out over every little scrape? Do they treat their injuries/illness all by themselves? Phoebe would rather err on the side of caution when it comes to medical care for the people around her, though if such professional care is not readily available she can tend to minor wounds with skill and can even stabilise/field dress some moderate injuries thanks to what she's learned on her father's ranch. For herself, however, she is very proactive about her health (exercise, good diet, vitamin supplements, etc) in order to avoid unnecessary illness/injury. If such things do occur, she will typically try to fix it herself rather than trouble others. Won't seek medical help unless truly necessary.

How competitive is your oc? Is every little task something that they can win, or are they just in competitions for the fun of it? Is there anyone they’re most competitive with? Not competitive. A bit robotic in team/group activities.

How skilled at lying is your oc? How frequently do they lie? For what reason? What situations would be the exception? She's not skilled at lying. She's a straight arrow with her father, and generally doesn't let folks get close enough to need to lie. Her biological father taught her early on that honesty is VERY important. Her uncle continued to instill that when he adopted Phoebe and she's always clung to it. She would (try to) lie about her sister's disappearance if anyone ever started to ask her about it.

What is your oc’s immune system like? Are they invincible to illness, or are they compromised completely from the slightest of dirt? Above average immune system. She takes very good care of herself in order to make sure she's able to keep up with household chores, school, and helping out on the ranch. Regular exercise, good diet, vitamin supplements, etc. Sickness is somewhat rare for her.

Does your oc do anything “just for the aesthetic”? Or are they completely practical in everything? Phoebe is practical in her outer appearance, working on a ranch does that. As far as aesthetic goes, I suppose "mourning on the job" could be classified as an aesthetic. A majority of her clothes are black/dark-colors/muted. Sturdy overalls/pants, layered tops, tank tops.

If you had to choose a single object to act as a symbol for your oc, what would it be? Why? A pair of wings. It would represent not only her desire for freedom/escape from her tremendously heavy guilt, but also a sense of guardianship. An instinct to provide refuge and support, an immense drive to protect.

If your oc could only eat one thing for the rest of their life (while miraculously not suffering from malnutrition), what would it be? Does this match their favourite food? Her uncle's garlic parmesan chicken and mushroom alfredo. Pasta in general is her favorite.

How prepared is your oc? Ready for the worst no matter what, or completely lost in every situation? Would they have a medkit when it was needed? Would they have an umbrella if it rains? She's prepared for things that would happen in her day-to-day life on a ranch. Minor injuries (animal AND human), flat tires, broken tools, etc. Maybe not to the point of carrying a first aid kit with her at all times or a toolbox, but knows how to do things and can improvise if needed.

How charitable is your oc? Or are they more stingy with their resources and money? Tips well, would lend resources/money if asked.

If someone was describing your oc to someone who had never met them, what distinguishing features would they mention? How would one identify your oc in a crowd? Long black hair in a thick plait, black chain necklace/black tube pendant, fiery red tumbled stone thread-wrapped in black macrame necklace, grey eyes, sad face

Does your oc have any pleasure that embarrasses them so they keep it secret? Or are they open about all the things they enjoy? Horseback riding. There isn't a whole lot that she truly enjoys after Melanie disappeared. She's thrown herself into routine and support, devoted herself to being beneficial to others (instead of harmful). She doesn't allow herself a lot of time to just go and ride, but when animals go missing or herds are being moved she is always one of the first to saddle up.  It brings her, even if only subconsciously, a sense of freedom that she can't pinpoint. Singing also provides a sense of self, as well as playing music (was learning how to play the harp and can play a wooden flute with reasonable skill) but she has not engaged with any of those things since the loss of Melanie. She has essentially turned away from anything she did before that was for her own sense of enjoyment.

What is your oc’s stamina like? Would they be able to run a marathon, or not run at all? What about walking/another physical activity? How are they with exercise in general? Phoebe carries out regular exercise and a good diet. She's never run a marathon before but she could probably complete one if she tried. Working on a ranch is full of physical activities and she can keep up with the rest of the 'hands.

How long can your oc stay focused on one task before they get bored? Do they constantly have to switch things up or do they hyperfocus? What sort of things is it the opposite for? It is rare for Phoebe to abandon a task before it's completed. Not really hyperfocus, just a strong sense of not leaving tasks unfinished if she can help it, boring or not.

What is the most annoying sound to your oc? What’s the most pleasant? Is there any reason? Phoebe hates the sound of strong rain/thunderstorms/rushing water and her own singing voice. She'll never forget the deafening roar of the storm bearing down as she tried to shout for help after Melanie fell in the flooding creek. Melanie had insulted her singing voice earlier that day during an argument and the two never had a chance to make up. As far as pleasant sounds she immerses herself in the sounds of the ranch. Crackling fire, ranch-hands working on the grounds, various animal sounds, etc.

What smells bring back specific memories to your oc? What are those memories like? Rain reminds her of That Night so that's not great. Car exhaust sometimes reminds her of her biological father's funeral procession; 6 years old and more of a dream idea than an actual memory, standing next to her mother who squeezed her hand too tight, policemen in fancy uniforms lining the road as far as she could see, saluting a black car that slowly drove past.

How jumpy or easily spooked is your oc? Do they have a fight or flight reflex to being startled, or are they never startled at all? She likes to think she isn't easily startled but she isn't really involved with other people enough. Her uncle doesn't do that to her and when she's at home it seems like nothing can shake her.

How polite is your oc? Do they do everything with the utmost courtesy, or do they completely refuse to say please and thank you? Utmost respect to everyone.

How flexible is your oc? Can they touch their toes or do they have trouble just sitting down because of how stiff they are? Reasonably flexible. Yoga is part of her daily exercise.

What is your oc’s typical walking like? Do they speed-walk everywhere, do they take quick short steps or long paces? On their tiptoe, the sides or heels of their feet? How loud are their footsteps? Legs for days so longer strides. In boots it can be a bit loud but for the most part she does try to walk softly.

If your oc was in a video game, what would their idle animation be? (When the player stays still for too long, the animation that plays.) Head down, shoulders slumped and arms crossed as if hugging herself

What topics does your oc know the most about? Are these obvious or would these be surprising to others? Ranch life. Taking care of livestock, first aid, climate/seasonal shifts, a bit of mechanic-work. If one were to look at her (how she dresses) some of it might not come as a surprise but I think folks are generally surprised just the same.

What time of day is your oc most awake? What about most tired? Do they get up at the same time every morning without need of an alarm, or is their sleep schedule all over the place? 5am every morning. Has woken up at the same time for years so probably doesn't need the alarm anymore but keeps it around anyway.

What five ingredients would you throw into a cauldron to make a potion based on your oc? How would you cook/mix them? What would the potion do? 3 brass conchos gifted from a friend/relative, 1 horseshoe from the rear foot of a grey mare, 1 handful of primroses, a handful of shed down feathers from a growing falcon, and a single falcon talon. Bring cauldron of fresh spring water to a low boil, put in horseshoe and keep at a low boil for 24 hours. Add brass conchos and bring to a rolling boil for 1 hour. Lower heat to simmer/low boil again. Using a mortar and pestle, combine primroses and down feathers together. Once well-combined, add mixture into simmering cauldron a little bit at a time and let simmer for 1 hour, stirring often. Remove from heat, add talon and allow to sit overnight. Makes 4 servings. Dosage: 12oz every 12 hours as needed. Shelf-life: 90 days. Effects: heightened courage, strength, and speed. Shielding ability.

Describe your oc’s favourite environment. Urban or rural? Wild or controlled? What’s the climate like? Living on a ranch rural is her preferred environment, but there is a sense of control. Her uncle's ranch is large but Phoebe knows the boundaries like the back of her own hand. The climate is generally mild.

What would someone blackmail your oc with? Would they be successful in getting what they wanted? The threat of harm to others would be enough to get her to stop what she's doing and listen up. She'd go along with it, likely trying to put herself between the threat and the threatened the entire time.

How easily does your oc get attached to things? Does everything have a sentimental value to them, or do they see nothing as more valuable than its practical use? What about with people/animals? Has kept a few things of Melanie's (jewelry, blankets, hair pieces, etc) and keeps them around but holds people at arms-length (usually further lol).

How stubborn is your oc? Are they easily convinced of the opposite opinion, do they not agree but let it happen anyways? Or do they cause conflicts with their inability to budge in their decisions? Depends on the topic, really. Since her uncle is basically the only person she regularly speaks to with Mel gone, she listens to him and trusts him a great deal. If they disagree on something she's either eager to shift her thought or will at least do things his way anyway because she feels like she owes it to him. The only thing she won't seem to let go of in differences is that she's to blame for the loss of Mel but her uncle swears up and down that's not true.

How much has your oc traveled? Why is this? Would they like to travel more? Or are they perfectly fine with staying home? Japan to the USA, that's pretty much it. She'll cross a state border here and there (western US; Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, etc) going with her uncle on cattle runs and things of that nature but she doesn't consider herself well-traveled.

What signs tell that your oc is nervous? Do they fidget, is it in their expression or the way they say things? Or are they very skilled at hiding it? She'll crack her knuckles, or that thing where you kinda massage your own palms with your fingers.

How superstitious your oc? Do they end up following them ‘just in case’? Or are superstitions incredibly important to your oc? What are some that they believe? What about the ones they don’t? Living on a ranch has introduced Phoebe to many matters of superstition and a majority of them she only goes along with because her uncle and his ranch hands do. Horseshoes are a staple across front doors of the ranch's house and various outbuildings. Wearing yellow is HIGHLY frowned upon (some of the ranch-hands have rodeo experience and wearing yellow, especially on competition day, is said to invite cowardice). It's bad luck to step into your left boot first. NEVER put your hat on your bed, ESPECIALLY head-side down. Phoebe's uncle gave her a horseshoe pendant the day he adopted her and she never takes it off. Yellow was never Phoebe's favorite color but she avoided it altogether after the ranch-hands mentioned the superstition. One of the older ranch-hands taught her several things about knives; if gifted a knife, one must "pay" for it or risk "severing the relationship" (a copper penny will suffice). It's considered unlucky to to hand someone an open folding knife and whoever opens the knife is responsible for closing it.

Are there any habits your oc has picked up from people around them? Do they know where they’re from? Does your oc try to stop themselves from doing it? Puts on boots and pants right foot first (superstition learned from the ranch-hands), gets on horses from the left (that's the side her uncle taught her on), cracks knuckles when nervous (picked it up from the ranch-hands, her uncle doesn't like that much), sticks tongue out of the corner of her mouth when she's concentrating hard (she's been told her biological father did that). She does several things out of habit that have been instilled after years of working on a ranch.

Hmmm, this is a funny one to think about…

Look. I’d say a door is actually much the same as a switch in this regard weirdly enough. Because a switch’s purpose isn’t to block electricity or to let it flow — otherwise you wouldn’t use a switch! You’d have either a gap or just a wire there.

No, a switch’s purpose is also to do both, just like a door. And a switch is considered ‘off’ when it is open as it doesn’t allow passage. So by the same logic a door must be considered ‘off’ when open! And ‘on’ when closed. I rest my case

This is causing a bit of a stir on Twitter but:

if we consider a door to be a kind of mechanical device, there must be an on state and an off state.

so.

Tarot Questions to Read For

I love reading tarot, but I find “general” readings to be frustrating and a bit boring. Usually when I pull out my tarot cards, it is because I am excited to read. My querents usually have no idea what questions to ask, and have never even had a reading before. When I do general readings it comes out like, “well, this card says you have, err… money problems?” and it sounds like a terrible cold reading.

So here are some fun questions to read for instead of a general reading! I use them for one card spreads usually but you can expand it to be however you like. These are also fun party questions. Give one card to each person who wants to be read for instead of shuffling for each individual person.

The Questions:

What is your secret greatest fear?

What is your soul’s purpose in life?

What is your greatest quality you don’t recognize yet?

What is your untapped talent?

What does your spirit want right now?

What are you taking too seriously in life?

What does your life need right now?

What should you be focusing on?

What is your relationship like with your spirit guides?

What would make you the happiest right now?

What do you need to let go?

What is ready to manifest in your life?

What is something you need to hear?

What is an important truth in your life?

What is the next step you need to achieve your current goal? (note: ask them to specify which goal ahead of time)

What can you do to improve as a person?

What do your spirit guides want to tell you right now?

What are you avoiding?

What are you ready to let go of?

What do you need to let go of?

What is the next big opportunity that will come to you?

What do you need in your everyday life?

What lesson are you learning right now?

What phase or cycle are you about to enter?

What needs to be dealt with in your life?

What journey are you on right now?

What was your most recent past life like?

What is a big challenge you will need to face soon?

What is advice you could use in your everyday life?

What is the biggest challenge you are currently facing?

What is your subconscious trying to tell you?

What is your higher self trying to tell you?

Bonus Spooky Halloween Questions

What kind of spirits are following you around right now?

How will you die?

What is your inner monster like?

What demons are you facing?

How do BFRB'S Affect You?
Google Docs
*Note this is a form made by someone who deals with skin picking but who is not a dermatologist, psychologist or scientist of any kind Our

A Google Form to collect as much information on Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors, in this context picking, pulling, chewing, or scratching the parts of the body. Only people who suffer from these can take the form. Emails aren't collected and I'm not a mental health professional just someone who deals with a BFRB. If you want me to make changes to the form then just ask.
