How Many People Say They Get Work Done In An Office?
I started reading the first chapter of Remote, a fantastic and quick argument for why offices shouldn't be required for certain businesses. The very first point made by authors Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson got me because it's so true... at least it was for me and my former office mates.
"If you ask people where they go when they really need to get work done, very few will respond 'the office'". If they do say the office, they'll include a qualifier such as 'super early in the morning before anyone gets in' or 'I stay late at night after everyone's left' or 'I sneak in on the weekend'".
Before co-founding PowerToFly I had a number of management positions. You can read all about them on my profile. At every one of those jobs I had to take my thinking work home. Anything that required extended reading, writing, strategy and analysis I couldn't get done surrounded by my colleagues. Office time was spent in meeting after meeting and in a lot of conversations that had nothing to do with the work at hand.
Curious to hear about other peoples' experiences. I know it's a bit of a sensitive subject, especially since the vast majority of people have no choice but to work from an office. They clearly are getting work done, but are they also taking a lot of work home... or finding "quiet spaces"?
