Rise August challenge:Day 2

Took a lot of hard work so I hope you guys like it. Couldn't decide whenever Karai's hair colour is black or dark brown so I went with dark brown. Tomorrow I will try to draw Todd.

Reunited in the Afterlife
Summary: Set in the Kraang Apocalypse timeline. Each of the turtles & April reunite with their family after dying in battle.
Part 1: Raph
(Part 2: Donnie, Part 3: April, Part 4: Mikey and Leo)
Raph’s eyes flew open. Where was he? His thoughts were muddled with confusion. A few seconds ago, he had been fighting off the Kraang with his brothers by his side. They had been trying to rescue some families from a collapsed safe house when suddenly, they were ambushed. Raph remembered whipping out his sais and trying to hold back the Kraang’s forces, hoping to give the families enough time to run for it. His brothers were with him, fighting just as fiercely. With their combined strength, it seemed like the mission would be a success! That was until the sister Kraang arrived. She started attacking them, cackling with murderous glee. She had lunged at Leo, one of her tentacles as sharp as a knife. Raph remembered shoving his brother out of the way before…
Raph sat up. So that’s what happened. He looked down at his chest and saw the gaping hole right next to his heart where the Kraang had stabbed him. His memories came flooding back to him: his shell cracking as the tentacle impaled him, warm blood seeping out of the hole in his plastron, collapsing to the ground, and the sound of his brothers screaming.
His eyes widened as he scrambled to his feet. “My brothers!” Raph cried out. He can’t be dead, he can’t leave his family like that! He was the one who was supposed to protect them! Who’s going to do that if he’s gone?
Raph was this close to running off to find a way back when a hand came to rest on his forearm. The touch felt strangely familiar. He turned around to see who was holding him back and gasped. It was a Japanese woman with high cheekbones, kind eyes, and dark hair pulled back into a ponytail. It was Karai.
“Gram-gram?” Raph choked out before being pulled into a tight hug. “Oh, my child,” Karai whispered, a tear tracing down her cheek. “You should not be here yet. You’re only 28.”
Wrapped in his Gram-gram’s embrace, the snapping turtle could no longer contain his tears. He hugged her back even harder and sobbed into her shoulder. Everything he’d felt during the last 11 years of the apocalypse came flooding back to him. He never cried in front of his brothers, he had to be strong for them. But now that he was dead, he could finally let those tears fall.
After a few minutes, Raph pulled back, sniffling. “Thank you, Gram-gram,” he mumbled, mustering up a smile.
He looked around his new surroundings. There were hundreds of different souls crying as they reunited with their families. Raph couldn’t help but think of his own family back on Earth, forced to carry on without him. He turned back towards Karai. “My brothers… they’re still down there. I can’t just leave them alone.”
“Anatawa Hitorijanai,” Karai replied with a soft smile. “They are not alone. You can watch over them as much as you like. Just like how your father has been watching over you.”
Raph’s eyes widened. “Dad!” he exclaimed. Splinter had passed away a few years prior due to heart complications. His death had sent the four brothers into a month-long state of mourning. They lost people everyday as leaders of the resistance but their dad’s passing hit harder than they ever expected.
His head whipped around, trying to spot his dad. “Where is he?” he asked Karai, his tone pleading.
“Red!” cried a familiar voice. Raph turned around at the sound and found his dad standing a few feet away, a sad smile on his face. He looked the same as he had 4 years ago before he died, with long white hair and a wrinkled face.
“Pops?” Raph whispered. His eyes started to fill with tears. “Pops!” he cried. The snapping turtle scooped his dad up in a hug and swung him around as the older Hamato let out a hearty chuckle. Raph sank to his knees, his arms still wrapped around his dad, and clutched him even closer. Splinter pet the back of his eldest son’s head, whispering “My son. Oh, my son,” over and over again.
Raph pulled away, tears in his eyes, so he could see Splinter’s whole face. “I missed you, dad,” he said. The old rat chuckled. “I’m aware. I was there at my funeral. I missed you too, Raphael.”
Karai bent down to rest her hand on the red turtle’s shoulder. “Come on,” she said in a kind voice. “Your father and I will show you around the afterlife. Then later, we can visit your brothers on earth. I imagine they can use some comfort.”
Raph sniffed and then nodded his head. “That sounds nice,” he said with a smile. Gram-gram offered her hand to help him up. Raph smiled as took it and pulled himself off his feet. “Let’s go,” Splinter said, taking Raph’s other hand in his own.
So, with his grandmother in one hand and his father in the other, Raphael Hamato walked off into the afterlife.

Part 2: Donnie
(Part 1: Raph, Part 3: April, Part 4: Mikey and Leo)
(Thanks to @kathaynesart for the inspiration. If you like this, pls reblog)
Donnie knew he was dead. He knew infiltrating the technodrome to plant a probe had its risks. He knew that casualties would be a possibility. But as long as the casualties weren’t his brothers or April, he was happy. He had planned for this mission as carefully as possible to avoid any possible accidents, but things could still go wrong. Just as it did when the brother Kraang ambushed them inside the technodrome. But he had been prepared. He activated the Donnie pods to take Leo, Mikey, and April away from the technodrome while he stayed behind to plant the probe. His last words to Leo over the comms had been, “Take care of Michael for me, Nardo,” before he initiated the self-destruct.
The turtle opened his eyes to see a vast plain painted ghostly green, filled with hundreds of people who emanated the same color. Souls of the dead. Donnie raised his (fake) eyebrows. He knew ghosts were real, his best friend had been possessed by one for crying out loud, but he didn’t expect the afterlife to be an actual, tangible place.
“This is impossible,” Donnie muttered to himself as he took a few steps. Then a sudden thought stopped him in his tracks. Wait a second. If the afterlife was the place where all the spirits were… Donnie whipped his head around. “Hello?” he called out. “Members of the Hamato Clan? Anyone there?”
“Donnie!” The inventor froze upon hearing the sound of his name. He knew that voice. He could recognize it instantly even though he hasn’t heard it in over a decade. He slowly turned around to see a certain alligator-snapping turtle mutant with a tattered ninja mask wrapped around his head. His mouth was slightly open, revealing his signature snaggletooth that refused to go away even after years of wearing his headgear every night.
“Raph?” Donnie asked, his voice cracking as he said his brother’s name. His older brother nodded, tears forming at the edge of his eyes. He stretched his arms, inviting Donnie in for a hug. The softshell didn’t even need to think about it. He immediately charged into his brother’s embrace, laughing as he did so.
Now, Donnie wasn’t the type to cry often. Strong emotions were more of Mikey’s department than his. But now, wrapped in the arms of his older brother who was murdered in front of him ten years ago, his brother who used to comfort him when he was overstimulated, his brother who supported his love for tech from the beginning, his brother who has sacrificed so much for their family, Donnie let the floodgates loose. The tears were a mix of joy from finally seeing his brother again and grief from the trauma built up from the past two decades of the apocalypse.
Still hugging, Raph started to spin the two of them around. Even though he has grown quite a bit over the past 10 years, Donnie was still significantly smaller than Raph. His feet left the ground as his brother swung him around. Through his tears, Donnie started to chuckle and Raph’s giggling followed right after. Soon enough, the turtles were shaking with laughter, tears of joy streaming down their faces.
Raph set the softshell down as Donnie pulled away to get a better look at his brother. “You absolute dum-dum,” Donnie said in the most loving voice he could muster. “You just had to go big brother mode and get yourself impaled. You have… no idea how much I’ve missed you.”
He gave Donnie a soft grin. “I missed you too, little brother. But hey, you’re one to talk about getting impaled. You sacrificed yourself too, remember?”
Donnie let out a nervous chuckle before he caught on something. “Wait a second, how did you know I sacri-” he caught himself before he said the word sacrificed. “Er, initiated the self-destruct?”
“Because I was there watching you,” Raph said. “I can’t be with you guys on missions in person anymore but hey, who else is going to be your Red Angel of Preventing Harm, eh?”
Donnie’s eyes widened. “You were with us,” he whispered. “All this time we thought you were gone but you were right there. Just like you always were”
His brother smiled and then gave him a small nod. “Remember what Gram-gram used to say? You are not alone.”
“Anatawa Hitorijanai,” Donnie recited, an old memory resurfacing from when he was a teen. “Wait, Gram-gram is here, isn’t she? Can I see her?”
“Of course,” Raph said, his grin growing wider. “But first, someone wants to see you.” He gestured with his chin to something behind Donnie. Nervous, the inventor turned around to see the spirit of the one and only Cassandra Jones.
“Casey?” Donnie exclaimed. Cassandra had died a few years earlier on a mission with Leo, entrusting him and the rest of their little family l with taking care of her son Casey Jr, whom she named after herself.
The Senior Jones grinned before charging right at him. “Oh, god,” Donnie muttered, knowing exactly what was going to happen next.
“Attack Hug,” Casey screamed, her signature shriek piercing the softshell’s ears. Unlike him and his brothers, Cassandra hasn’t changed much since they were teenagers. She scooped Donnie up into a hug, cracking his ghostly ribs. “Thank you for taking care of my little stinkbug for me,” Casey said, her voice softer now. “But you are officially banned from giving any more children The Talk. As if Junior didn’t have enough trauma already.”
Donnie wrestled himself out of the hug. “Noooooooo. We do not talk about that day. I told Mikey he would have handled it better, but he insisted. Now I have the memory of Casey’s horrified expression permanently implanted in my brain.”
“Wait, what?” Raph said. “I’ve never heard this story before. Donnie, what did you do?” His older (now younger?) brother glared at him. Donnie gave a nervous chuckle.
“I may have been a bit too blunt when I was explaining,” he said.
Cassandra cackled. “ A bit?” she said, giggling.
Raph sighed and shaked his head, a slightly amused smile on his face. “By the way, there are two people right behind you who would love to speak with you again.” His eyes were glinting the same way they did when he would give Donnie and their brothers a surprise present.
Donnie turned around to see who he was talking about and his eyes filled with tears when he recognized who they were. It was Gram-gram and right beside her was…his dad. The softshell smiled through his tears. “Papa! Gram-gram!” he cried. He ran at his parental figures and scooped them both up in a hug.
As his face was buried in Spinter’s fur and Karai’s shoulder, Donnie felt Raph’s arms wrap around them, his size engulfing all three adults in the hug. He felt Cassandra’s arms join the hug soon after.
While Donatello Hamato didn’t always enjoy hugs, this one filled his heart to the brim. He stayed there, wrapped in the embrace of his family. Maybe the afterlife wouldn’t be so bad

Part 3: April
(Part 1: Raph, Part 2: Donnie, Part 3: Mikey and Leo)
April’s eyes flew open. She bolted to her feet, her senses on high alert. “Where am I?” she whispered to herself. She wasn’t in New York anymore. In front of her was a tall, ornate gate glowing a ghostly green. Beyond it was a vast field overflowing with hundreds of people emanating the same color. April looked down at her hand to see that she was now glowing green too.
Her eyes widened. “Oh my gosh,” she muttered. “I’m dead.” She suddenly remembered a bright red beam hitting her in the back before she collapsed onto a heap of rocks. The laser must have come from the leader Kraang.
“Yup, you are,” a cranky voice said. April turned her head to see a short, elderly ghost standing beside the gates. “So many people are dying from the battle down on earth, we’re running out of space. The afterlife can only expand so quickly. We had to install gates to keep the order. Anyway, what’s your name miss?”
“Commander April O’Neil,” she said, standing up a bit straighter. Using her title gave her confidence, something she did not have much of right now.
The old man looked at her with awe and respect on his face. “I know you,” he said. “You and the Ninja Turtles freed my family from that labor camp ten years ago. Thank you.”
April smiled. “It’s the least I could do.” That was what leading the resistance was about. Lives were lost every day, lives of their friends and family, which made every life they saved so precious.
The old man opened the gate and stepped aside. “Welcome to the afterlife, Commander.” April smiled and stepped through the gates.
She had no idea where to go so she just started walking. She could hear the souls of the dead whispering about her as she walked past. It made her a bit uncomfortable. She understood why, she was one of the leaders of the resistance and this was their most devastating battle yet. The fact that she was dead was not a good sign. But hearing everyone whisper about her behind her back brought back not-so-pleasant memories from high school.
“April!” someone shouted. She did a double take. The voice sounded just like Donnie’s. Wait, the voice was Donnie’s. April whipped her head towards the sound just as her best friend burst through a cluster of ghosts, glowing bright purple and looking very alert. Of course, Donnie of all the spirits would find a way to glow purple instead of green. She shouldn’t have expected anything less.
“Donnie?” April said, her voice cracking. Donnie gave her his signature smirk and eyebrow raise while leaning on his Genius Built™ bo staff confirming that yes, it was him. “Salutations, Commander,” he said, his expression warm.
April broke into a grin, tears forming at the corners of her eyes. “Donnie!” she cried as she ran straight at him, Donnie’s arms already open for a hug. April crashed into him and latched onto his torso like a koala. She may be 42 and ridiculously buff but she was still much shorter than the turtle. April felt Donnie’s arms wrap around her as well. She squeezed her friend with every ounce of strength she had. The complaints followed soon after.
“APRIL, I CAN’T BREATHE.”
“You’re dead. You don’t need to.”
“Alright, alright, I missed you too. But please, you’re crushing my ribs.”
“You’re a turtle. You don’t have ribs.”
“Softshell turtles do! Apriiiiiiiil!”
“Fine,” she said. April loosened the hug a bit. “I missed you, Dee.”
“I know,” Donnie replied. April could hear the smile in his voice.
After a moment, April pulled away from the hug. She took a step back to get a better look at her friend. He still looked exactly the same as he did three years ago. He had the same smirk, the same Megamind size forehead, the same drawn-on eyebrows, and the same purple markings on his shoulders. Though those were hidden a bit by the cloak he wore. April smiled. Then she hit Donnie on the head with her baseball bat.
“Ow!” Donnie exclaimed, rubbing the spot on his forehead where she had struck him. “What was that for?!
“That was for dying on me,” April said giving him a look and pouting. “And on top of that, you programmed your voice into all your inventions! Every time I went out on a mission, it was like you were there but you weren’t at the same time! And don’t even get me started on Omega. Do you know how many breakdowns the boys and I had in the weeks after your death?”
Donnie glanced down at his feet, looking a bit guilty. “If I can remember correctly, you had 3, Mikey had 4, Casey had 1, and Leo had 5,” he muttered.
April’s eyes widened. “That’s… correct,” she muttered, shocked. “Wait, how did you know?”
Donnie scratched his arm. “You couldn’t see me but… the reason I know is because I was there. Raph, Dad, and Cass were too.”
“Of course,” April said, raising her head. “We are not alone. How could I forget.”
Donnie winked at her. “Can’t get rid of me that easily,” he said. She let out a small chuckle. God, she had missed him.
“YOU ARE NOT HAVING A REUNION WITH APRIL WITHOUT ME!” someone yelled. April snapped her head up. That voice… It sounded really familiar. She knew she had heard it many times before but she couldn’t put a finger on it.
“Who was that?” April asked.
“That,” Donnie said, a secretive smile on his face. “Would be Raph.”
Before April could react, the large snapping turtle landed with a big whump beside her, glowing crimson. “April!” he cried, his face lighting up like a flashlight.
And she thought seeing Donnie again was an emotional roller coaster. But he had only been dead for three years. April hasn’t seen Raph in thirteen years. She immediately teared up again.
“Raph,” she choked out, grinning through her tears. He smiled back before scooping her and Donnie up into a big bear hug. April started to laugh. When was the last time they had a group hug like this?
“Thank you for taking care of Leo and Mikey for us, April,” Raph whispered, making April cry even more. “You don’t hear this nearly enough but you did a great job. We’re all proud of you.”
April sniffed and hugged Raph back even harder. “You’re the best. I missed you guys so much,” she said, addressing both Hamato brothers. “Though, I feel guilty for leaving Leo and Mikey behind. They were devastated after what happened to you guys. I don’t want to cause them more grief.”
“Not to be a pessimist but,” Donnie began to say.
“Dee, I know exactly what you’re going to say and I don’t want to hear it,” April said, shooting him a look from over Raph’s shoulder.
At that, the snapping turtle released the two of them from the hug and looked directly into April’s eyes. “That’s the hardest part about being dead. As much as I loved reuniting with Pops and Gram-gram, I felt guilty about leaving you guys behind, exactly like how you’re feeling now. But, there is something we can do about it.”
April’s eyes widened. “What is it?” she asked.
Raph grinned. “We don’t leave them behind. We’re spirits April, we can go wherever we want. If you like, we can go down to New York right now to look after them.”
“Yes!” April exclaimed. She may be dead but she was still the go-getter she always was. She wants to help in any way that she can.
“Alright,” Donnie said. “But first we need to gather the rest of our little spy crew.” Donnie cleared his throat and posed like a Disney Princess. “Oh, Papa! Gram-gram!”
The souls of Karai and Splinter appeared right beside them. April gasped. “Splints! Karai!” she cried as she ran to hug them. Splinter let out a chuckle as she scooped them up.
“It’s good to see you too, April,” her favorite rat man said fondly.
She pulled away from the hug and Karai put a hand on her cheek. “You’ve done so well, my child,” she said with a warm smile. April had to fight back tears. Again.
“I missed you guys so much,” April said. It was like she was a broken record, repeating the words “I missed you” over and over again. How many people dear to her had been lost over the past 24 years? So many people had died at the hands of the Kraang.
“Oh yeah! Our ghostly spy crew is complete!” Raph exclaimed. “Wait a second, where's…?” The snapping turtle trailed off mid sentence and fixed his eyes on something over April’s shoulder. Curious, she turned around to see the one and only Cassandra Jones charging towards them. April’s eyes widened. She really needed to get used to seeing the souls of her dead friends again.
“Guys!” Casey cried. “Guys, guys guys! I-” She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw April, her eyes comically large.
“April?” she gasped. “You’re here! Oh, no you’re here. Ahem, well, uh, good to see you again, sorry that you died. Leo’s been stabbed, we need to go.”
“Leo’s been WHAT?!” Raph screeched, sounding like he was on the verge of a panic attack.
“Oh, that’s not good,” Donnie muttered, his eyes showing the fear his voice refused to express.
“Tell me about it,” April said, having finally recovered from the shock of seeing Casey again. “Not only is he wounded, which is bad enough, he and Mikey are the only resistance leaders left since I, you know, already died.”
“Speaking of which, the wound on your back looks pretty bad,” Splinter stated.
“Hm?” April turned around to look at her back and winced when she saw the ghostly representation of her mangled flesh. “Yikes,” she whispered.
Raph leaned in to mutter something to her. “Don’t worry. We can fix it later. I came to the afterlife with a giant hole in my chest but I found a way to make it disappear before Donnie came.” He straightened up and made his voice louder so everyone could hear. “Right now we need to go down to New York. Leo’s going to need all the help he can get, even if it’s beyond the grave.”
“I second that,” Donnie said, stepping forward. “Something tells me that the next few minutes are going to be crucial to who will win the war.”
“Let’s go then!” Casey exclaimed. “Junior is currently dragging Leo to get help for his wound.”
“Ok,” April said confidently. “Wait, I don’t know how to…I don’t even know what to call it. Teleport down to Earth?”
“That is alright. Come,” Karai said, placing a hand on her shoulder. “We will help you.” The six of them made a circle and joined hands, April in between Splinter and Donnie.
“Hey,” April whispered to the two Hamatos she was stuck in between. “As crazy as things are right now, I’m glad I’m with you guys.”
“Right back at cha’ O’Neil,” Donnie said with a smirk.
“We are all happy to talk to you again,” Splinter said. He gave her a big smile. God, she had missed him. April would have to catch up with him more later.
“Ready?” Karai called out. They all nodded. April looked around the circle, at Donnie, at Raph, at Splinter and Karai, and at Cassandra. She still couldn’t believe she was seeing them again.
“Alright,” Karai said, a soft smile on her face. “3, 2, 1.” And they disappeared into thin air.
Five Minutes Later…
