this might cause some controversy... but imma say it
after rewatching some mcu movies,
steve didn't really care about bucky- not at least as much as i used to think.
he cared about the bucky he knew in the 40's- he was searching for the comfort of the 40's and the life he knew before the ice.
every (almost) interaction between them was reminiscent of the 40's. steve searched for three movies to find/help bucky, but when he realized he wouldn't get the same man he dipped.
i go back and forth a lot, because i realize that the shittiness of the writers in endgame fucked up steves arc- but they are still canon in the mcu (unfortunately) and play a part in how i see steve and bucky.
sam loved bucky where he is now- not how he used to be or what he'd like to see him be- sam met bucky where he was at.
bucky needs someone to meet him where is at and help him move along in his journey post hydra- not remind him of the life he missed out on.
i believe steve loved bucky, but loved the idea of bucky he created in his mind.
therefore, sambucky is superior to stucky.
“Hey, Sam,” he says, quietly, and doesn’t think too hard about why he’s smiling. It feels like a squishy, private kind of thing, the smile, and he’s grateful for the darkness.
“Hey.” Sam makes his way down to the water’s edge to stand beside Bucky. “I interrupt you communing with the lake fairies?”
“Yeah,” he says. “They told me to be careful, there’s a rare kind of bird likes to come out here about this time.”

holy FUCK your brain is so smooth
no no bucky looks at them being Feral(tm) and he's instantly reminded of steve. he finds katy chen sulking because she overheard someone using slurs and he has flashbacks. he hears about how peter's bullied at school and tears up thinking of little stevie getting his ass handed to him at your local alley. he sees kate gesturing wildly when talking about the importance of voting and he just hugs her for five minutes straight (she's confused but not willing to let go at all. actually, five minutes is too little for her.)
sam grew up with siblings and he has children in his family so he's used to dealing with younger people, but not enhanced ones with spider powers or magical rings and his first impression is 'Fuck No' because theyre CHILDREN peter was in HIGHSCHOOL when he got his powers what the FUCK he's worried sick about them, constantly trying to sabotage their patrols or get shang to get an actual job ("you sound just like my mom" "first of all don't speak to your mother this way young man" "bucky you are NOT HELPING.") until he brings it up with sarah once and she smacks him on the back of his head and goes "you were literally the same way you fucking idiot"
bucky's there and he's Confused because sam wasnt familiar to this world until he met steve, right? whats she talking about?
and much to sam's dismay and desperation she talks about how sam never told any adult about the kids who went after the gay trans black boy, about how he hid few black eyes here and there, cut off his hair in secrecy when someone put gum in it, about stolen and broken toys and nasty rumours
but he did tell some of them about unnecessarily complicated plans to get back at them, about well placed skates and loose bricks to make them trip, about fabric paint on their seats and stolen material resurfacing with pride doodles all over them (and bucky falls in love all over again.)
sam wants to be mad about bucky telling the kids about those stories the next time sam tries to lecture them into Being Fucking Reasonable and sam's like how dare you bring my erratic behaviour into this you BITCH but honestly? he's not so mad anymore when peter goes to him to advice on how to deal with transphobes, or when kate asks if they can do something together to cheer her up after a hard day
it's on their third movie night when shang and katy bring a stray cat home saying they dont know how to take care of it by themselves and since bucky and sam already have alpine maybe they can, you know, help or something that bucky realizes it's too late now, they're cool gay uncles and nothing can stop them
clint thinks its fucking hilarious. bucky cant believe this is what his life lead up to. sam still hasnt noticed.
Sam: i don’t think we can mansplain, manipulate or malewife our way out of this
Bucky: *cracks knuckles* manslaughter it is.
Sam: i need someone to take me out
Bucky: like on a date or with a gun?
Sam: surprise me.
Bucky: *pulls out gun*
