La lande est magnifique par ici, et les falaises encore plus. Oui, ce chemin est réputé dangereux, chaque année des touristes y décèdent, mais la vue en vaut largement la peine, et puis Raphaël fait très attention, il fait jour, il n’a pas bu, il n’y a pas vraiment de risques.
D’ailleurs il n’est pas le seul à venir profiter de la beauté de l’endroit. Devant lui, il voit une femme, mince et aérienne, portant dans un imperméable flottant autour d’elle, qui saute de rocher en rocher comme si le vent lui-même la portait. Elle s’approche de plus en plus du bord de la falaise, et finit par s’arrêter à l’extrême limite, si près que Raph se demande si la pierre ne risque pas de s’ébouler sous ses pas. Il tente de lui crier que c’est dangereux, mais l’inconnue l’ignore et se penche de plus en plus vers la mer et les rochers en dessous, à plusieurs dizaines de mètres plus bas…
L’éclair de compréhension frappe Raph. Elle le fait exprès. Elle est venue ici pour mourir.
Lui criant toujours de reculer, il se précipite vers elle et la tire en arrière. Dans un mouvement de rejet, la femme recule trop, il la suit, et sent le sol se dérober sous ses pas…
Il tombe pendant quelques secondes qui durent mille ans.
Puis le choc.
Mais non. Ce n’est pas le choc de son corps s’écrasant au sol, c’est le choc d’être agrippé par deux bras solides qui le retiennent fermement, tandis qu’au-dessus de lui deux ailes immenses déployées leur permettent de planer doucement jusqu’au sol. Le choc, c’est de voir la femme inconnue devenue subitement monstrueuse et emplumée, qui le regarde dans les yeux et lui gronde de rester tranquille. Et lorsqu’elle le dépose au sol, c’est ce deuxième choc qui rend ses jambes faibles et le fait s’écrouler sur place. Qu’est-ce qui vient de se passer ? Qu’est-ce qu’il a vu ?
« Qu’est-ce que vous faisiez là ? lui reproche la femme-oiseau. Vous auriez pu vous tuer !
— Je… je…
— Vous avez essayé de m’attaquer !
— Non ! Je… je croyais… que vous vouliez sauter ! Mais pas avec… avec les ailes… je croyais…
— Ah. Vous avez cru que j’étais une humaine qui voulait se suicider.
— Oui !
— Si ça avait été le cas, ça aurait été un épouvantable sauvetage, vous savez ça ?
— … sans doute !
— Et maintenant, je devrais vous dévorer.

— Pas de témoin, pas de problème. Et puis entre la falaise et la marée, vous ne seriez pas le premier corps qui ne serait jamais retrouvé.
— Mais… mais j’essayais de vous sauver !
— Oui, c’est pour ça que j’hésite encore. Ce ne serait pas très juste. Mais il s’agit de la survie de mon peuple. Nous avons besoin de ce secret. Nous sommes trop peu nombreuses aujourd’hui…

Raph commença à chercher dans son dos, le plus discrètement possible, une pierre qu’il pourrait ramasser. Hors de question de se laisser dévorer ! Magique ou pas, la sirène est mince, presque frêle, en combat il pourrait facilement…

Parfait. Tout ce qu’il vient d’entendre est parfait. Sensé, merveilleux, entrainant. Ralph y adhère en tous points.
C’est une belle balade, la plage à marée basse. Bien sûr, c’est moins beau que la vue depuis la falaise, mais il était tellement plongé dans ses pensées qu’il est descendu sans s’en rendre compte. Aucune importance. Par contre il est grand temps de rentrer. Peut-être qu’il va lire un peu, aujourd’hui. Il a des tonnes de classiques à la maison auxquels il ne touche jamais, ce serait une bonne chose de profiter des vacances pour se cultiver, après tout.
Il lui semble entendre derrière lui une étrange voix qui bougonne « pfff… aquatique… », mais il met ça sur le compte de son imagination.
