It is! I first drew that when planning a sheith longfic that I started two years ago, but I set it aside for a bit of a rewrite as my plot ideas got bigger. And then even bigger. 👀 I haven't returned to it yet but it's still percolating.

It's a dystopian AU where sentinels and guides are taken from their families and trained in military academies to be future pilots in an unending war. Keith has seen what Coalition forces are really doing to people on the border worlds—making mindless drones out of all those who oppose them—just like they did to his father.

Keith and Shiro are both unusually gifted as sentinel and guide respectively, so they're matched from a young age. Try as he might, Keith can't bring himself to hate Shiro. Hell, by the time they both come of age, he can't help but love Shiro, but neither can Keith forget what those soldiers did to his family.

Keith keeps his thoughts carefully guarded, painful as it is, leaving Shiro in the dark about his plans. It's for his own safety. Keith throws his sentinel activation trials on purpose, hiding the truth of his abilities, so that he'll be sent away from the academy. Only then can he strike out on his own and find out where they're holding his father. The plan will cost him Shiro, sabotaging everything they have and their future happiness together, but it's his father. He has no choice.

Of course, nothing goes according to plan.

When the war slams them back together years later, Keith doesn’t believe in second chances, just his own abysmal luck. He thought leaving would protect Shiro, but what if he was wrong from the start? What if his ‘choice’ was no choice at all, and it steered them both right into a trap engineered by a mastermind who knew Keith's secret all along?

There’s nothing Keith can do to change the past, but deep down he knows he’ll never let Shiro down again, no matter what it costs him.

Featuring:

slowburn estranged childhood friends to lovers, broken betrothal, second chances, sensory overload feels, empathic bonds, subverted soulmate tropes (but still very much sheith inventing love), prickly keith who pretends not to care about anyone but himself but is actually the most devoted friend in the whole universe (so, canon??), actual sheith conflict, loads of tension, not just the sexual kind, actual plot, weird alien ships that can only be operated by sentinel/guide pairs, weird world building, space opera vibes, the Coalition is basically every "evil empire" trope ever but under the guise of being the good guys, the enemy is a scrappy band of freedom fighters incl. Krolia and other BOM members, also the Holts are very important in this one incl. bigtime keith & pidge friendship, seriously they are kind of gremlin besties and I love writing those parts.

In other words, the story I have in my mind for this could fill a whole fucking trilogy but I just have to have to make time if I’m going to actually do that. 😂  

And of course I have that one friend who thinks it’d be better if I made OCs and wrote original fiction, but idk. This WHOLE STORY stemmed from one simple what-if that I cannot separate from sheith? Like, I can’t. I wouldn’t know how.

My original thought was:

Keith would burn the whole world down for Shiro. I really believe that. So what would it take, what circumstances would be required, for Keith to burn down everything he has with Shiro in pursuit of something else? What else would he never give up on?

What would it take for him to believe he couldn’t do what he needs to do with Shiro? What would force Shiro to watch him go, knowing he can’t follow?

And what would it take for them to fix everything that was broken between them?

A reminder to please take a chance on indie authors the same way you might indie films or indie video games. A lot of us work hard to create quality stories that are too subversive or unmarketable for a mainstream audience and if you're tired of the schlock that gets turned out by the big corps your next perfect read could be being peddled by a tiny nonentity on the corner of social media sending posts out on nothing but hope and a prayer. Don't write us off.

Decided to post this on here on impulse. The list is no order whatsoever. My friend wrote them based on what I wouldn't shut up about this year. Neither of us really know what a hyperfixation is, we kinda just added things I was really, really into, sometimes it lasted a day or week, sometimes longer.

Impulse Drive abstracts this into a debt 'fuse' which causes you problems when it fills up – there's a resolution roll at the end of a job or mission, and if you roll well enough one of your options is to keep up with payments, which mechanically looks like 'the debt fuse doesn't tick up this time'

It's my favourite way I've seen this Cowboy Bebop plot propulsion model done in games. It's always hanging over you. It keeps ticking up. When you do well on a mission you have to sacrifice part of your success just to keep the fuse where it is. It feels precarious like you're one screwup away from having repo mercs dispatched to hunt you down. Exactly the feeling you want

been thinking about space opera TTRPGs, and like the campaign model of taking dodgy cargo jobs to pay the mortgage and cover running costs of your spaceship, having to make sure maintenance is done and all that, and encountering problems on the way, space pirates, precursor ruins, customs checks, floating cryotubes containing frozen space princesses and the like

I've also been thinking about abstracting money, my background in playing ttrpgs leans more heavily towards D10 dice-pool games from white wolf than anything else, and generally in those games characters have a resource rating (between 0 and 5) that describes their living standard and access to spending money, that rating can change over the course of play but like usually characters are motivated by things other than money (trauma it's almost always trauma)

and really I'm wondering how to do the space opera thing, which usually contains rather a lot of accounting, while also abstracting cash (I don't want to do the accounting)

counting coins is not fun, I want there to be a more fun way to achieve that tone

I am SO INTRIGUED by the Supernova Initiative!!!! Is there any tag-list for this wip?? Or can I just ask about what inspired this idea?

Currently, I am in the final stages of outlining this WIP and plan to start working officially on the first chapters around this week and the next! There will be a taglist then and I'll make sure to add you to it if you'd like, let me know in the replies of this post! I'll also be making a WIP Intro for this story in the coming days so keep an eye out for that!

As for what inspired it, it's a bit of a chaotic answer but I'll try my best to explain it: I've always loved science fiction, especially space opera (Star Wars, Star Trek, Guardians of The Galaxy, Voltron, etc, that's my jam!) and space exploration/adventure, so I've always wanted to write my own story like that one day! That's one of the reasons I came up with Supernova Initiative, there's more.

I had also been wanting to write a heist story, in the style of Bad Guys or Six of Crows, with a crew of morally grey but good-hearted outcasts doing wrong things for the right reasons. I also love stories about outlaws forming a found family and rebelling against an oppressive or corrupt system by breaking the rules. That is also super cool! So here we have reason/inspiration number 2!

I'm also a huge fan of futuristic/cyberpunk settings, especially when set in deep space, and dystopic high-tech societies that seem perfect but are actually hiding terrible dark secrets. I also wanted something to give my story a unique twist, so I started brainstorming and came up with a feel of the core themes this book will cover and the MCs will have to deal with/fight against - illegal human experimentation/bioengineering mad scientists, corruption within a powerful interplanetary system, government secrets in a high tech setting, and more!

I've also added cyborgs and humanoid aliens to the main cast just for some more fun!

Using heists as a tool to stand up against their galaxy's oppressive government, he has gained quite a reputation. Otherwise, Jack is a caring older brother and a good friend, someone who would do anything to keep his loved ones out of harm's way, even if it means endangering himself.

The deadliest sniper in the entire galaxy, Deimos was Jack and Cassie's first crew member and their adoptive brother, who grew up with the duo in the ruthless streets of Cethea III. He grew estranged from his siblings a couple of years before the main story, and eventually left the crew to pursue a solo career as a sniper and work more actively to aid the rebellion efforts against the Junction - as of the beginning of the main plot, he and his siblings are unexpectedly reunited and must begrudgingly work together once more in what quite possibly is the deadliest heist of their lives. And much to their surprise, rekindle the bond they once had as a trio.

Pronouns - He/Him Age - 26 Current Role - Narrative Foil to Jack & is also a Deuteragonist Appearance - Deimos has long, dark blue hair which he usually keeps tied into a neat bun or ponytail. He is incredibly tall when compared to his human peers, standing at around 7ft or 213cm. He is very lanky and thin, not having much in the matter of sheer strength, which he compensates with his remarkable speed and agility. His style is usually impeccable, the space-version of casual chic for sure. His go-to attire is a (literally) bullet-proof white robe with white pants, a charcoal black hooded cloak, and leather boots (I showcased his outfit in this tag, as well as the outfits of some other members of the crew).

A genius young inventor, Cassiopeia - or Cassie, as she's usually called - has always had a knack for robot engineering, making her first robots out of scrap metal in a junkyard when she was just a little kid. She's the younger sister of Jack Tithus, her older brother and only guardian, who raised her alone after they were orphaned. Cassie has a big heart and an undyingly optimistic outlook in life - always looking for the fun and good side of things, even when there is practically none. She is a key character in this story, and the secrets encrypted into her blood are tied to one of the main plot twists of this book series!

A ruthless mercenary and occasional assassin who specializes in poisons and deadly chemicals, Kye starts out as the most morally grey character in the crew, an antihero who isn't afraid to do terrible things or be downright evil to get what he wants. Haunted by his brutal past, Kye has become quite unpredictable and sometimes harsh to others, even when he doesn't want to be. Kye also often resorts to deceit and manipulation to take down his enemies, an prefers to find smart and creative solutions rather than trying to face problems head-on or through sheer strength. He was a childhood acquaintance/friend of Artemis, but the two have long since become rivals due to an incident in their shared past that has been left unresolved.

A cyborg/robot created for entertainment, Meridian long since yearned to know what it truly meant to live and be human. Finding an unexpected opportunity to rebel against their creator, Meridian broke free of the coding they'd been trapped to since the moment of their creation and escaped from the Khosmonian Galaxies in search of a future where they could truly be free. Naive, innocent, and painfully unaware of how real humanoid interactions actually work, especially in such a conflicted set of galaxies, Meridian wandered completely lost for a while, trying to not fall back into the hands of their inventor - who would for sure reprogram them and stop them from achieving their dream of experiencing real life - until they met a strange, but kind, group of thieves and space adventurers who became their friends and the closest thing to a family they ever had. Perhaps being human won't be such an unattainable dream as they thought.

Age - They have been alive for less than a decade but have the appearance/biology, mental age, and personality of a young adult in their early 20s.

Appearance - Meridian has medium to long hair, synthetic, which they can change/choose the color of at will (their favorite hair colors are bright neon pink, cyan, or deep gold). Their skin is pale and perfectly smooth, akin to a porcelain doll, and some of their robotic joints are visible, with golden wiring/servos within (like an automaton, but high tech and sentient). Their eyes can also change color at will, and they usually match their eye color to their hair color of the day because they like symmetry. Meridian is considerably tall, standing at 6,2ft or around 187cm, and because they tend to wear heels (they like it) with wheels, they're usually even taller. Their features are rather androgynous, though their design leans more towards a somewhat masculine appearance.

A wandering young gun for hire, Artemis was once the son of the most famous and renowned bounty hunter that ever lived, but after his father was killed by his own crew after a mutiny was staged against him, Artemis dove into the galaxy's underworld and into the life of crime he once had sworn to destroy, feeling purposeless and generally angry at the world, having kind of given up on himself. But after a chance meeting with Jack & his crew, Artemis, now the newest recruit of the team, has found himself once more fighting for a better cause, and has finally found a way to keep his father's legacy alive while stepping out of his shadow and becoming something new, someone he can be proud to be.

Appearance - Artemis has a long, curly black hair, styled into what can only be described as a messy, futuristic version of a mullet. His skin is cold white and slightly freckled, and his eyes are dark greyish brown, piercing and lively, much like that of his father. He always wears either red or black eyeliner, and has an ear piercing. Artemis is average height, 5,6ft or around 170cm, and has a lanky and thin yet athletic/muscular build. He is usually very serious, and has an infamous "resting bitch face", much like that of a regular angsty teenager, but when he is truly happy he has the brightest, sweetest smile and though he rarely laughs, he does have some sense of humor, especially when it comes to sarcasm. He usually wears dark red jackets, pitch-black long sleeved shirts and a white cloak, ripped-up black jeans, combat boots with spikes, fingerless leather gloves and a simple choker necklace.

Possibly one of the most tragic characters in this series, Vesper is also the most lethal and infamous assassin in all nearby galaxies, having built her reputation by bringing a brutally bloody demise to those who threaten or harm innocents. Traumatized by having witnessed the brutal death of her older brother, Atherys, after losing sight of their mother in the chaos, Vesper couldn't move on and eventually left everything behind - including her younger sister and their cousin - to pursue a path of revenge, going as far as to 'upgrade' her mortal body to that of an indestructible cyborg over the years. She became the most feared woman alive, bringing destruction and horror to those who did the same to her. But deep down, despite all her anger and bitterness, Vesper still has the same heart of gold and loyal spirit as she had all those years ago, which becomes apparent after she - unexpectedly - finds herself caring for the crew of misfits she begrudgingly joined. And this time, she'll be able to do what she was helpless to in the past - and keep this newfound family safe.

Appearance - Vesper has short and straight black hair, meticulously cut into a stylish yet practical bob. Her skin is pale white, having a peculiar mix of the paper-white artificial skin of her new robot/cyborg parts and her natural grey skin tone. Due to her "upgraded" physique, she is unnaturally strong - much more than any regular human would be able to be - while looking jarringly (when considering her superhuman strength) petite. Vesper has sharp rows of teeth, like a shark, but her smile - which is an incredibly rare sight, since she has an infamously bad mood - is incredibly kind and soft. Her eyes were once pitch-black, but due to her cyborg implants, they now glow a bright neon blue, having the capability to zoom in on targets like a camera and - on rare occasions - connect to databases. Vesper is 5,2ft or around 159cm. Her outfits are typically dark, practical, and bulletproof, often in combinations of either dark grey, black, dark green, or just pearl white, depending on her mood, and her combat boots have motorized wheels on them that give her incredible speed.
