15x04 Episode Review - What a Meta Rollercoaster THAT was!
Jensen Ackles directed this. Let that sink in before you read on. Because this means EVERYTHING.
Davy Perez said on Twitter that he had a lot of help with this episode from Bobo, Dabb, Meredith, Even from Jensen and Rob. Which seems pretty clear from me as I was blown away by what I consider a meta masterpiece.
There is a lot to unpack here so let me just jump straight in with my favourite part:
THE REDEEMED FANGIRL AND THE BRONLY GOD
In an episode directed by Jensen Ackles it both astonishes me and pleases me immensely that the strongest and most interesting plot didnāt involve the brothers. Every single scene with Becky and Chuck was a galaxy brain of meta and my head is still buzzing about it.Ā

Dean and Castiel in 15x08
I have to repost with all the tags, because this is hilarious š
Can we just all stop for a moment and let it sink in that 15x08ā²s plot was basically how a broken up Dean and Cas go to the place they first met for relationship counselling with new Queen Rowena, and following her advice, decide to recapture the magic by travelling back to the place they first realised they loved each other.
ā... itās a matter of doing it in a way that honors the past, honors our lore, but takes our guys on a journey we havenāt seen before.ā
-Dabb (about Sam and Dean facing Chuck)
I enjoyed this rhyming quote š
This article is everything.
Dabb talking about the relevance of purgatory for Deanās self awareness and the fact that the ending is all about character growth šššš
If this is not romantic, I donāt fucking know what is... wtf ?
the way dean says āof courseā in āof course I forgive youā
reblog if you agree
Genius.

I was just casually browsing tumblr, eating breakfast, and then I came upon this. I instantly stopped eating, started smiling, and am now just staring into space. I enjoyed reading that.
Destiel, kinda 15x18 coda, gratuitous fluff. Clowning hours are OPEN, people.
It feels like it happens in slow motion.
Cas has stumbled to his feet, touching his chest and trenchcoat like heās confused by their tangibility. He turns just in time for Jack to tackle-hug him, and for Sam to lope over and wrap his freakishly long arms around them both. Dean thinks theyāre laughing, but itās hard to tell over the rushing in his ears. He feels like heās walking through molasses.
There are so many things he wants to say, but the words get caught in his throat like an inconvenient, gay traffic jam and itās all he can do to put one foot in front of the other. Sam and Jack drift away. Cas turns.
And then itās just the two of them.
Cas looksāalive, which is really all that matters. Same blue eyes, same wild dark hair, same clothes. Heās wearing this beaming smile thatās fading in his mouth but staying in his eyes, despite the fact that his shoulders start to tense. He is deliberately, inhumanely still. Heās nervous, Dean realizes. Ā
Deanās thought about this a lot. Years. Heās lost sleep over it; not only his own confession, but the idea of⦠them together; how that would work, what itād look like. Itās been a source of anxiety and comfort and desire, and now that everythingās over, now that he gets to have his big frigginā moment, everything heās ever imagined flies out the goddamn window.
Dean moves before he understands what heās doing, crushing Castiel to his chest, arms tight around his shoulders, squeezing squeezing if only to convince himself that this is real, heās here, heās alive, heās here. It takes a breath for Cas to hug back, but he does, seemingly content to stay there forever whichāsure, but no, because Dean reaches up with one stupid, shaking hand to cradle the back of Casās skull, and then he pulls away with just enough space to look into those dumb, gorgeous, blue eyes andā
It isnāt a single kiss.
Sure, thereās the first one; hard and dry and desperate. Clinging. But then thereās another, and another, and heās calling Cas an asshole and an idiot and saying shit like donāt you ever do that again. And they keep kissing, because now that Deanās started, he canāt stop; he wants to kiss this man until he gets fucking stubble burn and then kiss him some more. Wants to take him out on a date. Wants to take him to bed.
āHow could youāafter everythingāā
Cas twists his fingers into Deanās overshirt.
āIāCas, Iāā
Cas nods against his mouth.
And then Deanās gay traffic jam becomes decidedly un-stuck.
He wrenches away, hands pressing to Casās chest when he tries to follow. Heās gorgeous like this; disheveled and flushed to hell, and Dean spares a moment to be embarrassed for them both when Cas drifts forward again like he just canāt help himself. Deanās fingers press against his reddened lips. āYouāre oblivious,ā he breathes. His hand moves to trace the line of his brow, the apple of his cheek. Cas watches him raptly, caught somewhere between elation and awe. Dean thumbs the bolt of his jaw. āYou need to pay better attention.ā
Cas clutches at his wrist. āDeanāā
āHow could you ever think I donāt love you?ā
Cas flounders, mouthing moving like a fish out of water. āI-Iāll endeavor to do better in the future,ā he says. Swallows thickly. Watches as Dean drifts close and brushes their mouths together in an impression of a kiss, something vulnerable and delicate and fucking terrifying.
āā¦Good,ā Dean says. āIāIāll do that, too.ā

It was always unfortunate the Buckner and Ross-Leming were going to have the second to last episode, because they are not talented writers. They have convoluted plots, overcomplicated timelines, so many elements people donāt give a shit about, and like to play into cheesy, lazy tropes that no one really enjoys. But Supernatural, the most meta piece of media in its class, made this last season about what makes a story valuable, and what makes it shitty. By making the writer the villain, and defining what he did and didnāt write, they are giving us a commentary on what parts of the show matter ā and what parts we donāt need to care as much about.
So, letās think a moment about whatĀ āInherit The Earthā accomplished. In a confusing, cobbled together and rather rushed first 40 minutes it addressed and resolves loose end after loose end after loose end, finishing off with the defeat of the villain and the restoration of humanity on earth. Bam, bam, bam, story arcs were closed off and conflicts resolved, leaving us with very little mytharc left to address. But what wasnāt addressed by this episode? What didnāt come up at the end? The things we care about. Eileen, and Cas. What they want for their futures.Ā
How brilliant was it to assign all of the detritus that viewers care less about to the weakest links in the writersā room, clearing the entire board of less-important (to the audience) unresolved plotlines with an episode left to go? In a one two punch, Supernatural took the stuff less important to the heart of the story and reinforced its unimportance by assigning it to Buckleming. Theyāre done. The big, dramatic conflict is over. The only thing left to address is the stuff we actually care about, and it went PURPOSEFULLY UNADDRESSED ONCE THE WINCHESTERS WERE FREED FROM THE STORY. Because thatās not for the Chucks of the writersā room to decide ā they canāt get their hands on the love, and the relationships. Because what else is there left to resolve?
No, guys, pals, friends, we should be cracking the champagne right now because this episode got all of the rest of the stuff out of the way. None of the B-plot can get in the way of the finale, which will focus on the heart of the show. Andrew Dabb will come through, and he wonāt have worked on 15x20 alone. They left the love, the relationships, the romance, and the people that matter for the finale because this is the Winchesterās story now, and they will follow their hearts.
Preach!!
I really want to know what Kripke told Jensen to make him agree to this ending
tbh jensen has already told us. the facts are this: kripke didnāt see the show after s5. he told jensen the same thing he did when the show started: it starts and ends with the brothers. and...jensen agreed because he still has fond memories of landing the role of dean winchester and he assumed that no one could understand the essence of these characters better than kripke himself because kripke is supernaturalās creator.
but....the sad reality is that jensen was wrong. jensen was the only one who carried dean on his shoulders for 15 years. jensen saw dean grow because he had to be dean and had to rationalize every action that dean took on the script so that he could portray it to us authentically. jensen thought about what made dean tick more than anybody else did. jensen thought about what dean felt for his mom or for cas or for his brother and father and any character that interacted with dean, no matter how small in our eyes, because that is the type of careful deliberate actor that jensen is.
jensenās gut reaction was right because he was the closest to dean and the tragedy is that all of them told him that he was wrong because of that closeness.
15x20 Carry On Coda.
The Impala races on, the road endless in front of him.
Dean feels at peace. Sort of.
Thereās a certain acceptance, knowing that this time Sam will listen. Because he will. Dean knows it to his core. Knows it from the way Sam let him go. Thereās no coming back this time. Heaven is his highway, ready to roam.
But something is missing.
Cas helped. Bobbyās words ring in his ear, and he hadnāt let himself think about what that meant at the time, but now itās just him and the road and itās all he can think about.
He closes his eyes, just for a moment. Itās not like he can die. Heās in Heaven after all.
He opens his eyes, and the surroundings have changed. The highway becomes a dirt road, to a familiar looking barn.
Dean knows Castiel will be waiting for him inside, and heās surprised that he doesnāt feel the urge to stumble over his own feet in his haste to get there. He and Cas, theyāve got all the time in the world.
He pushes the barn door open, and green meets blue.
And the thing is, Dean knew heād let Castiel down. He should have said something, anything, instead of letting him die in silence. Die without knowing what he meant, to both of them, but also to just Dean.
āI love you,ā he says, and itās somehow the easiest thing in the world.
And Castielās eyes crinkle, and his smile is all gummy, and Dean just reaches for him, falling into a kiss that has been overdue for so long.
*
They grow old together.
Not that either of them age, but here Deanās life is as endless as Castielās is.
They never leave each otherās side, but they visit everyone together. Mary, John, Bobby, Ellen, Jo, Kevin. Charlie arrives later, and so does Jody and Donna. Dean spends a moment of regret for the friends heāll never get to see again, like Benny.
But Cas takes his hand, and he thinks Benny would be proud of where he ended up.
One morning, he heads downstairs from the semi-detached house theyāve made their home, and Castiel is smiling at him.
āWhatās up?ā He asks, but somehow he already knows.
āSam,ā Castiel states simply, and holds out the keys to the Impala.Ā āHeāll be here soon.ā
Dean steps forward, momentarily ignoring the keys so he can run his fingers over Castielās stubbled cheek.Ā āYouāre not coming?ā
Castiel smiles and shakes his head, and Dean knows that heās giving him this moment alone with his brother.
He takes the keys, and drives.
okay so. that episode kinda sucked, it can... be redeemable though i guess. i shouldnāt get my hopes up but i just canāt help myself. iāve invested myself into the show too much for YEARS for it to end this poorly. well, anyway.
the best two scenes were definitely chuck thanos snapping the dog and luci calling michael a cuck.
uhm, well.. also the way that dean SPRINTED..
can we also talk about how spn literally stole a whole marvel plot line...
okay okay, iām really done now.
peace out till next week,
and letās hope to... castiel that the next episode is at least decent š°
