Feelings About Fragments

I’m gradually working through my feelings about this episode. It’s difficult. Part of the problem is, whenever SU does something I worry will be divisive, I have this automatic stress reaction, worrying about fandom backlash. It becomes less about my true feelings, and more about the feelings I worry other people will have - feelings that may make it harder for me to enjoy a show I love in peace.

People can feel how they want, of course, but this is the reaction I have every time. It makes it hard for me to judge my own feelings.

Harder still is the fact that if you asked me a week ago if Steven would shatter someone in SUF, I would have scoffed. Obviously, I was very wrong. Of course, no one stayed dead, which is the outcome I was truly afraid of - but still. What I’m thinking about now, though, is how me being wrong doesn’t necessarily mean that the show going this route has to be wrong either. As always, I very much want to enjoy this show on its own terms.

So, first off, I can say that while I don’t hate it, I do not yet love it. I’m really not sure. I think a big part of what makes me not hate it is the very specific circumstances it took place under. If Steven had struck Jasper in pure anger, or if the shattering blow had been a flinch reaction to stress or fear, it would have really rubbed me the wrong way. That would make it feel intentional, or alternatively like it was caused by Steven’s PTSD. In this case, though? I don’t feel like his PTSD had much to do with it, besides being an aspect of what pushed him to this point.

Feelings About Fragments

Him and Jasper were sparring. Steven wasn’t angry or trying to hurt her due to a perceived slight, or because he wanted to cause someone pain. He went all out against an opponent who has spent the last three days drilling into his head that she was strong, she could take it, she was his equal, and he couldn’t hurt her. It let Steven feel like he could let loose in a way he never could before, and he was reveling in the ability to flex his strength. He could be himself, whatever he decided that was, without shame.

Steven hurt Jasper because he bought Jasper’s hype - for a moment he convinced himself that she was right. That they could slug it out. That they could keep one-upping each other. An aspect of himself he felt shame for, or felt like he couldn’t control, was under his power. You can even see in the way Steven changed his form - psychologically he was getting into this ridiculous training montage, psyching himself up for this over the top battle against his rival. In a way, I think it was escapism. I truly believe he expected to unleash his Super Special Attack and for Jasper to be defeated, but in one piece.

But then it turned out it was too much. It wasn’t as if he attacked her in a moment of anger, only to regret it a moment later. He attacked in a moment of mirth, forgetting that anything could go wrong, fully believing that Jasper was on to something. And it turned into a disaster.

Given that he feels like he’s constantly under threat, that any mistake or conflict will result in his death, I can see the allure in allowing himself to rejoice in his strength instead of fearing it. Another layer on that is how Jasper herself was a formative part of his trauma - he attacked her not to have revenge, though, but to overcome the fear and vulnerability that haunts him.

So, the circumstances didn’t feel like they were forced. I can see how it ended up at that point. Steven was living out his shonen anime dreams and it all went wrong. All I’m grasping for now is what will the point be?

What narrative purpose is this for? Is it just to make him freak out? Or is it trying to create a situation where Steven can be forgiven just like he’s forgiven so many? Is it something else? I guess I won’t know till next week.

I feel like I’ll be thinking about this one for a while. At the very least, when SUF has nailed it on pretty much every episode before this for me, I’m not going to turn on it because something I thought was impossible happened. I owe it to the show to see it out, and by the end, I’ll decide whether I like this or whether I’ll just accept it.

Did Anyone See The Way Lapis Reacted To Those Chains?
Did Anyone See The Way Lapis Reacted To Those Chains?
Did Anyone See The Way Lapis Reacted To Those Chains?

Did anyone see the way Lapis reacted to those chains?

How when they came towards her, she just... froze? The almost adrenaline-fueled reaction? The metaphor of “opening the floodgates”? The projection of her trauma onto the situation (who’s pitiful now)?

Maybe she hasn’t healed as well as she thinks...

Everybody on this show needs therapy, y’all.

I lowkey didn’t believe the corrupted Steven theory at first but now I’m legit terrified?! Our babey is not okay?! Also the gems are handling it really badly, like absolutely abysmally?! IS GREG OKAY?!!

“Leave me blinded and erase my memories”

Glitchy Steven in honor of the last Stevenbomb. I'm probably gonna aim to draw one scene for each of the final bombs.

What was Missing from the End of Steven Universe Future

It was of course a fantastic end to the show, but there's something that I've always wanted to see in the show, but unfortunately will never get. We got to watch Steven breakdown, (still shocked that the corruption theory was right), and the Diamonds lament about how everything is their fault. Spinel also tried to take the blame, but the Crystal Gems (and Greg) were dead silent.

Even after Connie told them that now wasn't the time to make it about themselves, and how it is their faults, there was no self reflection afterwards.

Now, I'm not saying it didn't take place! But it would have been nice for us and Steven to see everyone (yes, even Greg) think about what part they took in bringing this kid so low.

His gem was ripped out, he stabbed Bismuth straight through the freaking chest for crying out loud! And if you think Greg's innocent, think back to the previous few episodes where he made a trip of adventure all about himself and never let his son explain his thoughts. That is literally his job as a father.

I really wish we could have seen everyone reflect and understand Steven in a new light, all by seeing what they had done to him.

Again, I'm not saying this didn't happen, I'm saying it should have been shown to us.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

That's the thing.

It's not worth it.

I covered this in another post, but the Gems never acknowledged what they done to Steven (at least not on camera). I'm sure his therapist will help him understand that what he's feeling is a direct result of what they did (and what they didn't do).

He has all this support, but only after having to bear the weight of the world on his shoulders, and only after having a mental breakdown did they do anything that actually helped.

Where was Peridot after she saw what happened to Steven and the TV? What about Greg when his son went to the hospital and he eventually made it about himself by rediscovering who he was? Why did nobody who saw the signs react more?

His family is supportive.

At a price.

honest question:

What is the point of being raised in a loving family if you still get Steven’s level of trauma???

(like no really indulge me here! i am looking for answers.)
