It narratively did not make sense to kill William. It was pointless shock value, really.

Meanwhile, Supergirl has this terrible habit of “killing” characters who should die, or are presumed dead, of retconning the deaths, and undoing everything in the process.

Here’s a list of characters who died and were brought back who probably should’ve stayed dead. Oh, and a list of characters who would have made sense to kill in this final season.

1.) Alura and Zor-El. Especially Zor-El. Their deaths fueled Kara’s motivations: being (one of) the last Kryptonians and last daughter of the house of El, reconciling her parents shitty choices (Medusa, PZ etc.). And the fact that Kara could not talk to them was heartbreaking and real. Her scenes speaking to AI Alura still stand up six years later. I don’t even remember her convos with them now that they’re alive. She should have had to finally face these traumas instead of her parents poofing back and then never interacting with her.

2.) Jeremiah. I know he died again but it was weird. I think he should’ve died in season 2 while saving Kara and Alex from Cadmus. Also maybe Alex and Kara could’ve had more than two episodes to grieve.

3.) Fucking Lex. The seven or so episodes he got in season four were great. A few were phenomenal. He was never Kara’s villain, he was Lena’s and he belonged in the ground.

People who should’ve died/or could have for real reasons.

4.) Mon-El. Should’ve died at the end of season 2. Maybe Kara doesn’t find out until season 3. Kara started facing a lot of her alien identity in S3 and what she wanted in her life from it. He didn’t need to live to accomplish that.

5.) Cat Grant. I know. I love her. But killing mentor figures on a Superhero show does serve a purpose. She gave hope speeches that inspired Kara to give hope speeches. She gave Kara her start in journalism. And the actress couldn’t stay so I think a cameo at the end of S4 during the alien hate OR in the series finale would plotwise be fulfilling.

6.) Winn in the finale instead of Brainy. I don’t know how or why, it could be figured out, but here’s what I do know: Winn and Brainy in my mind sort of traded places and lives. Winn will be coming to the present to help with every intention of going back to his family. Winn was the first person Kara shared her secret to. The first person she trusted. He used to be her best friend before they kicked that friendship to the curb. That’s my logic.

7.) Otherwise fine, Brainy. It would hurt a lot but the Superfriends remaining untouched isn’t the most realistic of things. He’s self-sacrificing, he’s close enough to Kara and the characters who matter to devastate, and he’s had tremendous character growth. And it’s hard to really see them killing another current Superfriend (also keeping in mind that every SF aside from Kara and Lena is a POC or is canon LGBT or both.) So I’m talking plot and more specifically, Kara. Killing Alex or Lena would destroy Kara (not to mention ruin their individual hard fought happy endings), killing J’onn, one of the last two green martians would be fucked up. Kelly just got to be Guardian. Nia’s future is wide open, and she hasn’t gotten enough character development, and she has a descendent, and killing her would just be…no. So yeah, Brainy’s death would make sense, but I would prefer it to be Winn if anyone.

William’s death did NOT make sense. It was distasteful. And sad in all of the real life ways and none of the plot ways. He was just tossed in the trash. Ugh.

Friendly reminder that in S3:E14 of Supergirl Winn’s mother says to one of the background workers of the D.E.O.“You should unionize by the way” because she suspected they weren’t getting payed enough and if that isn’t a reference to newsies then I don’t know what is

In S2:E16 of Supergirl Winn was told that he“should have run when he had the chance” to which he responded, “I was a theater geek, not a track star”

In S2:E16 Of Supergirl Winn Was Told That Heshould Have Run When He Had The Chance To Which He Responded,

we love a good newsies reference

Do you think Mon-El's relationship with the other Superfriends and family was overlooked a lot? Because I do.

I mean just think about it. In season 2, the relationships that he built with the others; not just Kara, were very important to him too. J'onn, Alex, Winn, maybe even Maggie. He was happy in mid-season 2, with seemingly no problems adjusting to Earth life, almost like he preferred it.

Which, honestly he probably did. Along with Kara, the others also made Mon-El into the responsible future leader he becomes.

Because he wasn't just close with Kara. He was close with Alex too. And J'onn. And I can bet that he admired Eliza more than he could ever his own mother. They were family to him in the shortest amount of time he spent there. Alex was there in the DEO reprimanding him and Winn almost every day, either with the tests they kept doing against orders or with them messing around on the job, like she was his elder sister too. J'onn, we all know was a father figure to him. The vulnerability he showed to him, he's probably never even shown to Kara. And J'onn was there for him too, always, with guidance. That's saying more than literally anyone on Daxam was to him. I think in all the hate that went against Mon-El simply for the fact that he was with Kara, it was overlooked how Mon-El as an individual character was with the other characters and how he quickly made at home on Earth, despite Kara. (They could've done a lot with that.)

Then Rhea came, and surprise surprise, there wasn't even the slightest look of relief or happiness that they were alive. After being surrounded by so much love, for even the shortest amount of time, he obviously couldn't go back to his lonely, ignorant lifestyle.

Yet that's exactly what happened. In a different way though, so it's all okay. It's not the same thing. He's in the future, with strangers all around him. And he spent years trying to go back. Before he gave up and decided to be what they would've want him to be; what they were hoping he would be alongside them- a leader; a hero. However, without them, you can't tell me that in being so, he lost himself too for the sake of duty.

He wasn't happy in the future. He became a lonely, melancholic man, who probably worked himself to the bone with no time to spare for his own. He even married for work. Though I do believe that once Winn went back with him, it must've added life to him. Give him some heart back, to have someone with him from then. That's how much that time meant to him. Then came Ayla and Mary by extension and he finally had something important to him in that time that he could look forward to; that he could be happy with, no matter how small it was.

His whole family was back there though. For Winn, he would only miss his friends, albeit painfully. But he already had an established life that he had made peace with once his parents died. So it was like moving away for a new job. But to Mon-El, these people broke him down and built him from the ground up. They showed him how life truly should be and not how he was taught on Daxam. They opened his eyes from the manipulation he was put through his parents and helped him be his own man; made him into a leader. That wasn't just Kara. That was all of them- Alex, J'onn, Maggie, Winn, James, Eliza.

Which again brings me to the stupid finale. You're telling me that Alex and Mon-El are strangers and that she insists on Winn coming to the wedding but doesn't say anything to Mon-El? We might not have gotten much screentime between the two, but you don't just go on double dates and seek support from someone you don't like. Mon-El was an important part of their lives too. He impacted their lives too. Alex and J'onn at the very least, I feel.

And I know that Kara asked him but I'm just pointing out the bad writing. It didn't make sense to let him go so easily. But are we surprised? No. They never cared about Mon-El anyway so why bother.

All I'm saying is when I imagine Mon-El in the future, I see him working to the bone and never sparing a second to himself; because if he did, his mind would only go back to the one place he was ever happy; the one place he ever felt safe and loved; to his family- knowing he can't ever go back there, not truly. And that place is not Daxam.

Because if he thinks about it, he'll only be reminded of how alone he is (in more ways than one); of how in he doesn't share even share the same reality as, not only her, but them.

Because he knows better than that. He was taught better than that; shown better than that. He leads by example. By the example of the people he looked up to and he loved. So no matter what the cost he would also do what is only right. (Like someone else we know.)

Stepping out of the elevator, Winn just managed to dodge out of the way from a very angry looking reporter who shouted at the phone in her hand. ‘Good thing I don’t work here anymore,’ he thought as he walked towards your office. Being a photographer for CatCo Worldwide Media meant you didn’t have too much free time, so when you texted Winn about having lunch, he eagerly accepted.

Stepping into your office, Winn takes notice that you aren’t there. Pursing his lips he glances down to his watch, making sure that he got there at the correct time, when he notices a note on your desk.

Winn, ran out of storage space on  my memory card. Headed down to my car to fetch another. ~ Y/N

He chuckles, looking down briefly to throw away the note in your small trash bin when something catches his attention. Pausing, he looks down at the trash bin, noticing some slightly charred papers in there. He hesitates whether to look through you trash or just forget about ever seeing it. His curiosity gets the best of him and he bends down, picking up what he now sees are burnt photos.

There were three photos in total. The first was of the building he was currently in, the CatCo building. There were pieces on the side that were burnt off. The other two were the most ruined. He couldn’t quite make out what these photos once were and it caused him to be concerned.

“Hey, Winn! Sorry for making you wait, I couldn’t-,” Stepping into your office, you expected to find Winn sitting on your desk chair playing some game on his phone but your life just couldn’t be that easy. At the sound of your voice he turned around, holding the photos that would change your life forever.

Stepping towards you, Winn held up the burnt photos and asked, “Did you really hate these photos so much you burned them?” He saw how you avoided his eyes and looked down at your glove covered hands. You took a seat on your small couch and still said nothing. That caused Winn to be even more concerned, you weren’t one to stay quiet for long. “Is everything alright Y/N? Why are these all burnt up?”

With a shaky breath, you looked up at him and said, “I’ve been hiding something from you. Something pretty important.” Worry filling Winn’s eyes, he takes a seat on your small coffee table waiting for you to continue. “I have powers,” you stop Winn before he could say anything, “please don’t interrupt… Last month when Supergirl fought that other alien, I was there, taking photos. When she defeated him and he exploded into some kind of energy, I think it affected me. Ever since that day, I’ve been lighting things on fire. Those photos are not the only thing. Last week, I woke up from a nightmare and my bed was on fire! I have no idea how to control it, that’s why I’ve been wearing these stupid gloves that make my hands all sweaty.”

Before you started to hyperventilate, Winn placed his hands on your shoulders and made you look at him. “Hey! Y/N! It’s okay. Don’t freak out on me.” You look him in the eyes and nod, breathing shakily. “I can help you. I know some people that specialize in super powered individuals and they would be glad to help you. I promise.” Looking at him, very confused, you nod and smile slightly. Winn grins and cautiously grabs a hold of your hands. “But first, there is a lot I have to tell you. Kara is-”
