The Truth About Leadership - Part 5

Focusing on the Future sets Leaders apart

This chapter argues that leaders are set apart from ordinary average everyday people because they have a vision about the future and act on it.  This point is true; it does set different types of leaders apart.  There are those that dream about a better future, but don’t act on it. There are those that haven’t even thought about a better future, but are just responding to needs of others.  And then there are others that do what is suggested by the title of this chapter, “Leaders look long term”.

However, just because you’re not looking 500 years into the future doesn’t mean that you’re not a leader.  The definition of Leadership simply states, “Guiding Intent with Integrity”.  If there is a goal someone needs to achieve, and you have a way to achieve it, you are their leader.  It doesn’t matter if it’s about going out dancing Saturday night, teaching a class room full of students how to speak English, or leading a nation through an economic crisis manufactured by the banks.  As long as you are guiding your own intentions and those of our followers, and they feel you are in integrity, you are their leader.

Coincidentally, on page 47, it is stated, “we found not surprisingly, that the importance of being forward looking increased with age, work experience and level in organizational hierarchy”  Leadership is about guiding people to their goals, so as people gain more experience about understanding goals, obtaining goals, and helping people achieve them, as well as motivating people to achieve them, yes, it stands to reason, just like children learning to walk, we will strive to use techniques that make it easier to achieve our goals and rely less on others.

Have you ever wondered why children learn to walk?  Maybe it’s because they get tired of waiting on others to help them do things.  Have you ever wondered why seniors refuse to stop driving?  It’s reported that seniors don’t want to give up their independence.  Interesting correlation, wouldn’t you agree?  Therefore, if follows that if I can achieve a goal more easily by leading a group of people to help me achieve it, wouldn’t I prefer to do that, instead of doing it all on my own?  We as a general rule learn how to do things more easily, and will leave older habits behind that took more time, and energy.

How many people do you know that still use type writers?  Now, why have so many people switched from type writers to using word processors?

The problem isn’t that other leaders are not thinking about the future. It is that they are here in the present, dealing with present problems, and haven’t learned how to utilize the tools of leadership effectively to motivate others around them to help them solve a common problem around the human condition.  As was illustrated in the first chapter, “You Make a Difference”.

Imagine your otp working together as they finish a project together (it could be either side project, home, work or for school) and having so much fun bonding with them.

Imagine Your OTP

Person B is working on something and Person A leans over to see.

Person A: “Person B~”

Person B: “Hmm?”

Person A: “Is there anything I can do to help?”

Person B: “Just being with me is perfect enough.”

Person A sits and keeps Person B company; helping when they can. Person B takes a few moments and stops for bit to kiss Person A’s cheek.

Person B: “Thank you Love~”

Person A: (Smiles and hugs Person B) “Of course dear~” 

Imagine Your OTP

Imagine your OTP fixing up their house and all is going well until Person A uses a ladder to fix the curtains then gets tied up in and begins to fall. Person B reacts quickly and catches them in time all wrapped up and says “I see you’re getting really wrapped up in your work!” making Person A chuckle and Person B kisses their nose.

Imagine your otp as an unstoppable superhero duo fighting crime and injustice, who even know each others secret identities and spend time together when they’re off duty.

Person A and Person B (your superhero otp) together resting when they’re off duty.

Person B: “You know it’s nice, the peace and quiet, no robbers, no criminals just a chance to relax-”

Then all of a sudden an alarm goes of and their signal calls for them to go.

Person B: “Well it was nice while it lasted.”

Person A then chuckles and says “We can rest when we get back.” then kiss Person B’s cheek then get to work.

Imagine Your OTP

Person A comes home and is walking by the kitchen and catches Person B by side glance. They then back-track to see them baking in the kitchen but struggling a bit. Then walks into the kitchen.

Person A: (with a light smile) “What are you making?”

Person B: (jumps in an unexpected surprise causing them to throw the whisk in the air and cause a clack sound) “Oh Person A, y-your early! (haha) Well, you see I was going to make this as a surprise but.” (they slide to the side to reveal the cookbook with Person A’s favorite dessert recipe)

Person A: “Really your making (insert dessert)?”

Person B: “Well you’ve been working so hard this week I thought I would surprise you with a treat.”

Person A: “Oh, Person B~” (they say as they rush to them to give them a big hug as Person B puts the mixing bowl to the side and hugs them back.) 

After they hug Person A asks if they can help and though Person B was reluctant they let them to spend time with each other. Then when they final finished they put a movie and watch it as they enjoy their treats together.

Imagine Your Favorite Character

Imagine spending the day with your favorite character(s) decorating the house for halloween with banners, lanterns, pumpkins, paper crafts you make together, signs, etc. And after you’re finally finished, your favorite character surprises you with your favorite autumn treat. You (both/all) sit down together and admire your work whilst finishing up the special treats.

Imagine Your Favorite Character

Imagine you and/or your favorite character cooking a special meal. Giving each other pointer on adding favorite ingredients or taking away ones that either of you don’t like, perfecting it, making it special so you can both love. By the time it’s ready you both eat while enjoying each others company, maybe you’re just conversing, maybe watching your favorite show or movie together or whatever thing you prefer.
