Writing tip no. 3

When writing prose, don't have characters just say things. Have them do things once in a while while speaking to make the prose more interesting. Trust me, you will get tired of constantly looking up synonyms for "said" and "replied" in a thesaurus.

To demonstrate what I mean, which passage is more interesting to read?

 "Hello, John," Mary said.

"Good morning, Mary," John replied.

"How are you doing today?" "Good," she stated.

 Or

"Hello, John," Mary shuffled her papers and set them on her desk.

"Good morning, Mary," John closed the office door behind him. "How are you doing today?" "Good," she said taking out a pen.

Writing tip no. 4

Stop looking at your phone all the goddamn time. It prevents the process of micro-boredom or as its more frequently called on the internet "shower thoughts." Some of your best ideas for writing will come from shower thoughts. After all "An idle mind is the devil's playground."

Writing tip no. 9

You can make your world in your story as unrealistic and ridiculous as possible, as long as you clearly convey the logic of your world, and make the logic internally consistent

"I'll give you a ride, don't worry."

*does something they don't like* "What? I like it."

*immense staring at every chance they get*

*thinking of their crush while listening to songs*

"You said you liked it so I brought it for you."

*finds ways to spend more time with them*

*friendly bullying intensifies*

"I'm looking forward to seeing you there."

"Are you gonna be there?"

"How about we sneak off, just you and me?"

"Why don't I cook for them? What's their favourite dish again?"

*aggressive google searches about how to propose to your crush*

"I'll join those dance lessons, maybe then she'll notice me."

*hopeless around them*

*failed flirting attempts*

*increased compliments*

"My problem is that I like them a little too much for my sanity."

*gets jealous* "So, are you seeing them or something?"

"Are you okay?" // "Completely okay!" (definitely not okay)

*tries to sabotage their crush's date*

*gets into trouble so they can be scolded by their crush*

"I want you to come with me, please?"

Genres

What is a genre?

A genre is a category that your story belongs to based on form, style, or subject matter.

Action/Adventure

Your book belongs to this genre if your characters are on a quest or journey to reach a concrete goal. Take The Lighting Thief  by Rick Riordan. The goal is to return the lighting bolt to Zeus before summer solstice, or there will be war.

Fantasy

Your book belongs to this genre if the world in your story has a type of magic system, or includes mythical creatures. Think of Dragons, Centaurs, Pixie dust, et cetera.

Mystery

Your book belongs to this genre if the story centers around a question(Who, What, Where, Why, and How). Think of Criminal Minds, Mondays Not Coming, Lucifer, etc.

Romance

Your book belongs to this genre if your story centers around the romantic relationship of two or more characters. Think of Five Feet Apart, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, Love, Simon, etc.

(Keep in mind, your story can belong to more than one genre. There are no limitations.)

If anyone has any questions, or feels as though I’ve left something out, feel free to let me know!

Almost All Good Writing Behinds With Terrible First Efforts. You Need To Start Somewhere.- Anne LamottSo

“Almost all good writing behinds with terrible first efforts. You need to start somewhere.” - Anne Lamott ✨ So before any of you get any ideas, no this isn’t me working on my book. It’s just me stirring up my knowledge in history and starting to take writing seriously. Someone once said to me that if one has to succeed in Writing or Speaking, one has to know his Mother Tongue very well. So here’s me taking the first step to dive deep into the my love and pride, my mother tongue, Kannada. I’ve written about “Mysore’s Legislative Assembly” which is the first ever step taken towards democracy in India in 1881 by Diwan C. V. Rangachalru. After 3 hours of Research, 4 hours of first draft, 2 hours of editing and one and half hour of rewriting, the piece is finally ready and I’m so proud of it. I’ve learnt so much that I’m immensely proud of and to have written about it makes me feel even better. It’s always a good day when you close your tired yet satisfied eyes.
