Jason, naturally, can't—being legally dead, and all—so he enjoys his night watching the security cameras with Babs. Popcorn in hand, he amusedly enjoys his siblings try to fumble their way through a whole gala centred around Jason, all while trying to pretend that he's still dead and they didn't talk to him literally a few hours prior.

Tim: Oh, I never got to officially meet Jason before he died, but from what I hear from Dick and Bruce, he was truly a great soul.

Jason, listening to this: He's totally tryin' not to explode 'cause I ate his pistachios earlier.

Babs: Tim likes pistachios?

Jason: Yea. They're his favourite, so I steal them all the time.

Babs, fondly amused: You know Tim's favourite snack?

Jason: Yeah, so I can steal it. Keep up, Barbie.

Babs: Sure.

Socialite: Dear, would you happen to have any stories about young Jason?

Dick, grinning: Absolutely! Just last w—I mean—the last time we went out shopping before he died. Yeah. That. Last time we went shopping he tripped on the escalator. Should've tied his shoelaces.

Jason: That happened last week.

The thing is, Dick has more free reign over answers, since he knew Jason before he died. Tim has a little bit of leeway, since he can chalk up any stories to small interactions he had with Jason as their neighbour. The rest of the kids, though? They have to keep their mouth shut, because if they slip up they'll be questions.

Things are fine until some of the socialites start 'discreetly' badmouthing Jason, saying that there shouldn't be such a big event happening for a glorified street rat. Jason himself isn't really affected by the comments, used to them already. He's pleasantly surprised when he sees every one of his siblings look absolutely livid on his behalf. He sees his siblings shut down every single rumour, even though they logically don't have to—rumours can't hurt the dead, after all. He watches as most of them defend him despite not being able to say anything about actually knowing him, and decides then and there; he has a call to make and paperwork to sign.

Time to defend himself—hanging out with and defending his siblings in public is just a bonus.

His Robin transformation also has black because of the influence of the Bat in his blood since he, like Duke, is the son of a Star and has some of the powers of said Star in his blood without needing a crystal for it.

Colour Swirl: that charging light he looks about to spear you with is a colourful wave that bludgeons through enemies like a brick rain (tim can confirm)

Son of the Bat: this ability takes its roots both in the pre-existing parental link between the Constellations of the Bat and the Robin, and the parental relationship between most holders of the Robin and one of the holders of the Bat, as well as Damian's powerful drive to prove himself as Batman's son. When Robin is in the vicinity of a Bat, all of his abilities, physical and magical, are enhanced (up to 3 times more powerful) though that may be altered depending on his relationship with the current holder of the Bat.

Going from detailed outline to full text when you're writing a fic is so funny because the story I've alread written keeps fucking happening to me

Like what do you mean it has a point? When the fuck did that story about misunderstandings and trauma and making fun of the batfam for making assumptions while also feeling sorry for them turn into asking uncomfortable questions about my career choices ? Where did that Diana/Cass parallel come from? Why is my therapist highjacking my story???!!

I tried to draw an illustration for the first fight scene of the protector chapter 5 but as it turns out I am not good enough for mid-air side profile battles yet, so have this magical girl AU semi-transformation batkid picture. Barbara is transformed in that picture, unfortunately I realized after drawing her facepalming that the outwards sign of her semi transformation, which needs to be discreet as she often uses it in public, are multicoloured smoke coming out of her eyes and mouth, which I couldn't draw with that pose. I'll try to make quality art of it sometimes though.

Fun fact: the fictional magical girl anime this AU takes place in is called "Starlight Lullaby" and spawns over more than fifteen 30 45 minutes episodes long seasons plus one reboot and two movies. It follows the adventures of the batfam, with some arcs centered around one character and some arcs putting the highlight on relationships and the family as a whole as they fight supervillains, mend their relationships and interact with dc superheroes with the powers of love and semi-sentient Gotham-specific constellations.

“Hey girlie, you’re too young to in here,” the guy at the door says, looking bored.

“It’s fuckin’ Gotham, who cares?” She demands, throwing a heavy Burnley accent on for good measure. She flinches, as if she’s realizing that she shouldn’t have said that. “Look, I’m sorry, I’m just lookin’ for my Uncle Matches, an’ my mom says he’s here tonight, I—”

“No shit,” the man says, suddenly. “Are you Minnie?”

“Yeah I am,” she says, putting her hands on her hips, wondering what the hell Bruce has gotten her into. “What’s it to you?”

The man laughs. “Damn, I was starting to think you were a figment of Matches’ imagination.”

She wrinkles her nose. “Uncle Matches wishes he was smart enough to come up with me.”

He flat out cackles, slapping his knee. “Damn, you really are Matches’ girl. Alright kid, go on in.”
