hi, writing an originals / tvd elijah fanfiction on ao3 and i like your brain. can you elaborate your thoughts on klaus and his preoccupation with his sister rebekah? he’s obsessed and i’m wanting to give you a space to just go nuts on the topic and maybe help me with my characterization? my fic revolves around trauma, religious and generational, and i’m not looking to paint klaus as anything other than severely disturbed. and this disturbing opinion is not one i encounter a lot. so: what’s his deal with his sister?
Klaus is an incredibly difficult character to write and he is, in my opinion, the most complex character in the tvd universe.
As a human, Klaus craved love desperately and the only people who gave it to him were Elijah and Rebekah: I wouldn't count Esther in, because despite the fact that she clearly loved him and all her kids, she just didn't give him the reassurance and comfort he needed, and she didn't protect him from Mikael either. As a result, Klaus clinged to the two of them and that only got worse when they turned into vampires. His "clinginess" turned into paranoia mixed with a toxic love, and as a result, he started controlling their lives by daggering them or/and killing any potential lovers because he was scared his siblings would love those persons more than they loved him and/or leave him because of it.
With Rebekah it was just worse, because they were the closest growing up and they remained the closest as vampires as well until Hope was born, where Elijah took her spot because she was finally free of him. It's canon Rebekah stood with Klaus even when Elijah didn't, and knowing how controlling he is, it's safe to assume she didn't get to be away from him for more than a month without having him throw a fit (I'm not counting The Originals days in this, because as I said before, it took Rebekah wanting to kill him to make Klaus see he was an asshole and he has to change his ways for the sake of his unborn daughter). In top of that, there's the side of him that gets insanely jealous whenever Rebekah has the smallest crush.
That is part of what I said about his paranoia and toxicity: he couldn't and wouldn't allow anyone to take his spot in her life, he loved her in a way that was abusive and Rebekah had no other choice but accept it. He was more than just overprotective and she falls in love way too easily, not just because he denied her the chance of a lasting relationship but also because mentally she's just a teenager that tends (at least in tvd) to lash out emotionally when people don't love her the way she wants them to.
In romantic terms, Klaus was denied of love too: he got rejected by Aurora in the most cruel way ever and Tatia didn't love him because she was in love with Elijah, and even a thousand years later the wounds caused by both women were in a sense still fresh. So he took it out on his little sister too, who was fond of anyone who was sweet to her, perhaps because he didn’t want her to go through the same heartache as him, and because he has been in love too and those feelings clouded his thoughts too much.
I mean, like when Aurora dumped her to the bottom of the ocean, when he was flirting with Hayley, when he was also flirting with Caroline while the mother of his daughter was kidnapped, or when he sacrificed himself for Cami: Klaus has put those women over his family a lot of times, something all his siblings have done with their respective love interests, and yet he criticizes them when they do it. They all chose love over family, but in Klaus's mind, he was the only one who had the right to. He's selfish like that, he can do whatever he wants but as soon as his family does the same he flips.
Despite that, he clearly loves his family. He loves Rebekah, Kol, Elijah, Freya, and even Finn: after all, he daggered him and kept him in a box for a thousand years and stuffed his mother into a coffin but he still carried their dead bodies around because he wasn't willing to abandon them despite everything.
One of my personal headcanons that you can take as canon if you want is that a part of his abuse towards Rebekah is because she looks like Esther. Their mother binded him, stripped him from his werewolf heritage and in a fit of rage he killed her: but it didn't do anything to quell his anger because his favorite sibling, his little sister, was her living image. We all know Klaus doesn't deal well with his emotions, especially the ones related to betrayal, so of course he was gonna blame his mother's actions on Rebekah.
And I don't know if that's what you meant, but I have a dumb brain so if you intented to have Klaus having "romantic" feelings for Rebekah it's more or less the same: he was obssesed with her, he didn't allow anyone to have her and she was the only woman who showed him loyalty, so his feelings could have easily changed into a form of twisted love and the mentality of "if I can't have her, no one can".
Anyway, I'm really honored you asked me about my opinion 🙌. Klaus is a fucked up person and it's hard to think why he does the things he does, people love to blame all his actions and the way he is on his bad childhood and Mikael's abuse and yeah, he deserved a better human life but his actions were his, being abused doesn't mean you have abuse other people and in his fear and hate he turned out to be even worse than Mikael in a sense.
(He's still my bitch tho)

Why couldn't they be together? I mean they are vampires , freaks of nature, murderers, have lived like a 1000 years, so fucking strong, no fear of judgement they can just not tell people/make people forget they are half siblings, i mean... If they really wanted to they could
so i think they didn't want to idk
Once again, imo they weren't in love but either way.
I agree in the fact that they shouldn't be afraid to make a incestuous relationship "public" if they were to ever date/fall in love because of how powerful and ancient they are, but one of the biggest traits of Klaus and Rebekah is their massive fear of judgment.
If they ever were together or they fell in love, they wouldn't dare to let anyone know. Their siblings probably wouldn't approve, Elijah especially, and neither of them would stand having one of their siblings hating them, especially Klaus who was so dependent on Elijah.
And klebekah would be a thousand times more abusive if they were romantically interwined: Klaus would use that position of power and manipulate her so much.
Every Klaus ship is taged here, because this wasn't exactly anti, just stating what's in canon.
Klaus loved Hope the most, that's what's in canon. It's said by himself, producers, characters, and every single person who knew Klaus well enough. Not trying to start a fight because that isn't my goal at all but your proof isn't that consistent, I'm aware Klaus has bad writing but the thing that remained of his character through all the seasons was how Hope was his everything. Ignoring all the dialogue and choosing to focus in only actions (like three actions at that) to lift your ship is quite strange.
I think you believe I'm implying Klaus didn't love Hayley at all when that's not the case: I'm aware he did, they were family after all (or the closest thing a non related person could get to be a Mikaelson) but that love wasn't romantic.
"Your biggest proof is dialogue", yeah, and your biggest proof are scenes, scenes in which my dialogue is constantly repeated so I wonder what that means. I never said Klaus would let his family die for Hope, he's codependent on them and that has been shown in every argument they had. And Klaus putting Hope and Hayley in danger in 1x7 wasn't a surprise, he had been accused by both Elijah and Hayley of only wanting his daughter for her blood and the chance to make more hybrids after also putting said woman and baby in danger episodes prior by trying to choke her to death, so of course he would be self-destructive and try to kill them both: in my opinion, he didn't give a damn about either of them yet, he just acted like an asshole because he hates when people talk shit about him. I don't think Klaus started to love Hope and Hayley until a few months into her pregnancy, as he was absent for most of it and they were bickering 24/7 and also his daddy issues. Elijah and Hayley were the right ones in here btw, not Klaus, in case this came as an attempt to justify his actions.
Klaus was also ready to rip out Hope from Hayley's womb in the chance of her survival, being well aware Hayley would die. Elijah had to physically stop him, while Klaus said he wouldn't lose the baby. And it's not a surprise Klaus stayed with her body: the witches said they would kill Hope the second she was born, then they murdered Hayley the next moment and broke his neck. It was probably a few minutes before he woke up, crawled towards Hayley and Elijah came in: it is what their whole conversation suggests. Especially because those witches were in the cemetery, where Klaus would face all of them.
I can't say much about season five. Klaus coming back to the city is what Hope intented, and he didn't seem mad at all after learning she had kidnapped Hayley: he gave her a slight reprimand and said he knew it wasn't what she intended to do, despite the fact that her actions were wrong no matter what. And he didn't approach Hope unless necessary, he said he would leave New Orleans the second Hayley was found. Correct me if I'm wrong because I don't remember much from last season, but Klaus had to physically approach Hope to hurt her and he always left as soon as he could: I do think however that in New Orleans was raining blood and stuff because of him being there.
I don't think he hated Elijah as much as he pretended to though: I'm pretty sure he did try and he did to an extent, but not forever. Klaus did fight his brother for wanting to die for him, saying he wouldn't kill him and more stuff. He had been forced to accept it after Elijah took a fragment of Inadu, and it's pretty clear they had rekindled towards the end of the show because Klaus loved his brother no matter what.
But it's clear we're not gonna agree on this though.
It’s honestly so weird to me how many KC, CK, and KH stans jump through hoops to justify their “Klaus loves x girl more than Hope” arguments. As if their ship isn’t valid unless they can prove Klaus loved their fave over his own child. Do they not feel a bit odd trying to compete with a infant/toddler/teenage girl for Klaus ROMANTIC/SEXUAL affection??? They act as if Hope herself gave af about who Klaus was dating/actively went out of her way to sabotage any of his ships.
Because while the writing for Klope is very (and I mean VERY) iffy, the one thing that remained constant for all 5 seasons was that there’s no one he would choose over Hope. Joseph said it, the writers said it, Klaus said it, and even multiple characters in the show (Cami and Hayley included) said it.
They're the same people who excuse his or any Mikaelson's behavior, so I'm not surprised.
I'll start with saying that there is no one Klaus could ever love more than his daughter, no one: not Caroline, not Cami and certainly not Hayley. If you don't agree you're just delusional and haven't watched the show, because The Originals is constantly throwing in your face how Hope was the only thing and person Klaus couldn't live without.
Granted, they had no time together at all but Klaus adored her. Saying any woman would come before her is stupid, and while Klaus is impulsive and has done things that could have prevented them from being together (him dying for Cami in season 2 aka giving his own life for her, biting Elijah when Hayley was pregnant aka putting his unborn child in danger, and etc) she has always been his first priority.
"My daughter, my heir, you're my heart" "Because you've helped me feel something that I never thought was possible: unconditional love" "She's my heart and soul" "You are all that matters to me" "Because you are my peace. And I regret a lot of things, but I don't regret a single moment I spent with you. I love you so much" Klaus said all those things to Hope and yet people believe she was second in his life??? Like, what.
Hayley and Cami were definitely important persons in his life, but they would never be as important as Hope. Klaus "allowed" every single thing that Hayley did because she was the mother of his child and he couldn't harm her, not only because Hope would hate him but also because his family wouldn't allow it. I mean, even the episode of her wedding is more about Klaus and Hope that is about Hayley herself. He was terrified of anyone other than him being Hope's father, and Elijah noticed.
"Elijah: Just listen to yourself! Fueled by your delusions of persecution! Think, Niklaus-- if you kill Jackson, the wolves will descend into chaos. You're acting out of fear, terrified that Jackson might be a better father to Hope.
Klaus: Do not bring the child into this.
Elijah: Your child arrived here today, her security strengthened by those wolves that would defend her, and you would jeopardize that alliance? Niklaus, you yourself have mentioned that had you been raised by Ansel, you might have been a better man. Now, perhaps, a better man has entered Hope's life, and having seen that, you are shaken to your core."
And then he proceeded to get jealous about Elijah spending time with Cami. Like, all of season two is Klaus not wanting Hayley to marry Jackson because he knew he was a better man than he could ever be and he could be an even better step father to Hope, of course Klaus didn't want that to happen. And he eventually agreed, because his love and need to be with his daughter was bigger than his fear and etc. And it's something Hayley agreed on: she married Jack because she wanted to, but mainly because her kid could be back home.
Or in 2x12, his whole fight with Jackson was basically him whining and being jealous because he got to met Ansel, his biological father aka the man Klaus had always wanted in his life. And his argument/fight with Hayley just proves my point:
"Klaus: Well, allow me to make this simple for you-- under no circumstances will you divulge any family secrets, especially none that would endanger our child!
Hayley: Except it's not that simple, Klaus. You saw what Finn did. He's growing more powerful by the day. Right now he controls over half of the wolves. This marriage could change that.
Klaus: The outcome of your strategy is not worth the risk it imposes on our daughter."
"Hayley: Klaus, think. We could have a whole army of super-wolves who could protect Hope as one of their own.
Klaus: Hope doesn't need a wolf army! I'll protect her myself! And an easier time I'll have of it, too, without you running off sharing secrets with every motley member of your werewolf brethren.
Hayley: Damnit, Klaus! This is our chance! We can bring her home. We have to at least consider this!
Klaus: I have considered it, and I have deemed it absurd. And in this matter, there is no one above my decree, not even you."
It took three seasons for them to be able to even stand each other, not to talk about the fact that Klaus was cosplaying as a single father for months demanding Hayley came to apologize to him, knowing she was in potential danger. And well, he was in fact flirting with Caroline while being aware Hayley was kidnapped and suffering, so let's not lmao.
It's the same thing with Cami: she was well aware she wasn't Klaus's light and yet she asked him in her deathbed to be the light for Hope and stuff, to let go of his anger and he swore to always carry her with him and etc, and it was clear he did but Hope was still his main priority and the one he loved the most. And Camille loved Hope a lot, Klaus and Hayley and actually all the Mikaelson siblings knew her and were aware about the impact she had on Nik.
Klaus and Caroline are something like a wtf, because when it comes to them the writing for both characters just disappears. But well, Klaus did some decent things for her but he never actually changed until Hope was born (he was forced to tho, but that's another conversation) and Caroline was aware of that. She trusted him with her twins and Klaus with his daughter, and they had a mutual respect in The Originals because they had grown in their own personal ways.
Caroline, Cami and Hayley are all very different women who managed to leave a mark on Klaus, but they weren't even in the top of three persons he loved the most. Hope was the first one, Rebekah the second and Elijah or perhaps himself is the third, not his love interests.
People need to stop being mad about the fact that a daughter is the most important person to a father 💀
This is so true. Klaus and Hayley were never romantically interested in each other: sure, they had sexual tension but since when does that mean romantic love???
Hayley said herself she was scared of Klaus during her pregnancy, and with the way he behaved it's sure to assume she felt this way the whole nine months: she was terrified of Klaus taking away Hope when she was weeks away from giving birth, so she was still pretty much scared of him the whole first season. And yet people think they would make a good couple?
Hayley probably fell in love with Elijah the moment she saw him, and Klaus was flirting with Cami, also fucking Caroline and Genevieve all those months. How could they ever be in love?
Klaus and Hayley loved each other, yes, but just as family.
![I Hate When People Say Haylijah Is Weird Because Hayley Got With Her Baby Daddy's Brother.](https://64.media.tumblr.com/094a18764f85cb8955d0b0c649c40b36/bd8830dd1a92e721-e1/s500x750/da6d3866d5398c0eec636701b123cc7e9a706804.gif)
I hate when people say haylijah is weird because Hayley got with her baby daddy's brother.
First, this is just reducing a woman down to a man she had sex with. She is her own person. She didn't fall for Elijah as Klaus' ex-lover/baby-mama/one-night stand. She fell for him as a woman. It's also disgusting to say that Hayley was not allowed to have any emotions/feelings while she was pregnant. It doesn't matter whose child she was pregnant with, she still has bodily autonomy. No one made a comment when Klaus slept with multiple women while she was pregnant (one of whom attempted to kill his child). It's a complete double standard.
Second, Hayley didn't owe Klaus anything. They were not in a relationship. They didn't even like each other much in the beginning. It's crazy to think that Hayley isn't allowed to like someone because she had a one-night stand months before she even met Elijah.
Klaus was not at all interested in Hayley and didn't expect anything from her. Elijah backed off for the majority of season one just in case he did. But again, no one owed Klaus anything.
Hayley and Elijah are their own people and fell for each other outside of Klaus (I know shocking not everything revolves around him).
It's also hilarious to hear these statements from a fandom that is based on a love triangle between brothers.
it will never not be funny to me that out of all of klaus 3 main love interest, hope ended up having a better relationship with aurora than cami or caroline 😭 aurora took the step mother title CK and KC stans have been trying to claim for their fave for a decade!
It's hilarious to me too tbh
Like, Cami only knew Hope for the first two years of her life and while she probably loved her as if she was her own daughter, Hope didn't remember her at all and everything she knew about her were things Hayley told her (because it's canon that Hayley told Hope about Cami and Jackson, a producer said it a long time ago) and the only time Hope mentioned Camille was so offputting. It's clear she didn't really have an opinion of her, and I honestly can't blame her.
With Caroline is even more strange, because apparently Hope always had been a troubled kid in school and the only close relationship she had with an adult was Alaric, because if she was close to Caroline I'm pretty sure Lizzie would had mentioned it. So they weren't close, and asides from Hope wanting to belong into the Saltzman family because her own family didn't give a damn about her, that's all they were to each other more or less. Perhaps they could get closer as she's now the headmistress, but Hope already has a mother figure in Freya and I don't see them having a mother-daughter bond, just being good friends because Hope loved Klaus and despite everything her father did to her, Caroline definitely wouldn't be throwing every single one of his sins in her face like Alaric did.
But the last moments between Aurora and Hope are heartwarming, their whole dynamic was so touching and it proved Rory could definitely had loved her if they were given the chance. I mean, in the few days she was with Klaus in the modern world she definitely knew about his then baby daughter and considering they were together/kind of, I'm pretty sure she thought about the fact that she would become her stepmother. That didn't end up happening, but still. After all, she did see the best parts of Klaus in Hope.
In short words, Aurora had spent her whole life hating the Mikaelson family and loving and despising Klaus in equal manners, so having her give her life for Hope was such a good way to end her character. Imagine Hope, who had grown - mostly - only hearing bad things from her father be told he wasn't pure evil and that she wasn't either.
Either way, Tristan must be rolling on his grave as we speak lmao
