Sirius's and James's first meeting (aka the start of a tragedy)

He's sitting in front of you with a grin way too wide for his face, his mouth dirty with chocolate, eyes brimming with childlike wonder and you know: You are going to love this boy with all your heart.

And you do. You love him through endless heartbreaks, through war times, through fire and prison, in life and in death.

You love him even as you stand above his lifeless body, even as you lie in an endless darkness slowly forgetting his voice, even as you stare into a face that both is and isn't his; because loving him is all you are, all you have, the only form of love you've ever known.

Regulus rounds the corner at the same time as James and they run right into each other sending all their books scattering to the floor. 

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to–” James starts as they both bend down to pick up their things.

“Watch it, Potter!” Regulus says, but then freezes when he gets a glimpse of what’s in his hands. James freezes also.

Regulus is holding James’ notebook and it’s open to a page filled with his name. Regulus’ name. In various forms.

But it’s what’s at the bottom of the page that catches Regulus’ eye the most.

“Regulus Potter”

“Regulus Arcturus Potter”

“James Black”

But “James Black” is crossed out several times with the word “blah” written beside it. It makes Regulus chuckle a bit and he looks up at James with a raised eyebrow.

“I can explain.” James tries to tell him, and his face is bright red.

“So…” Regulus starts slowly. “You don’t like my last name? What’s wrong with ‘Black’?” Regulus asks.

“No. Nothing. I like your last name. I just–” James stumbles over his words.

“I mean, you’re right.” Regulus shrugs “It’s not a great last name. Plus… ‘Regulus Potter’ has a nice ring to it.” He smirks and James freezes again.

Regulus doesn’t wait for James to respond, he just turns on his heel and walks away. It’s a few moments before James seems to find his words again.

“Hey! My notebook!!” James calls after him.

But Regulus just keeps walking with a soft smile as he runs his fingers over the heart with his initials. Yeah, James is never getting that notebook back.

Something I think about a lot is how Rick Riordan very rarely uses "girlfriend/boyfriend" to refer to Percy and Annabeth within their perspectives. They're so intertwined, even Annabeth says in hoh that the word boyfriend isn't strong enough, because Percy was a part of her. They are a singular soul, too wrapped around each others' fates that regular labels are far too weak for them. But, Rick Riordan uses "boyfriend" a lot in Nico and Wills perspectives, not because they love each other less than percabeth, but to show how much the word means to them. Nico uses it any chance he gets- "his boyfriend," "he actually had a boyfriend," because Nico has never been able to say that before. Their struggle with their queer identities mixed with Nico's catholic guilt and chronic everyone-hates-me disease makes the fact that he has someone to call his actual boyfriend so much more important to his character development.
