How Shadow And Bones Differentiate Villain And Anti-Hero
How Shadow and Bones Differentiate Villain and Anti-Hero
Alright, first I need to claim the fact that I love dark, edgy, but misunderstood bad boy in stories with the potential of epic redemption. Loki from Marvel. Jason Todd from DC. Captain Hook from Once Upon a Time. Zuko from AtLA. You name them, I simp them.
So when I watched this new show on Netflix and shown a tall, handsome man in dark clothing, both respected and feared for his power. I feel… nothing.
WHICH IS WEIRD! Like… he’s obviously my type. Complete with the sad backstory and vicious streak. So I kept wondering why I wasn’t enamored by the Darkling, Alexander Kirigan. I wasn’t surprised he was the main villain, I even expected it. But I usually at least have a bit of sympathy for them. This OOC behavior of mine made me introspect myself and the show, trying to find out which part gave me the red flags before Mother Darkling decides to pop the chosen one out halfway in the season.
That’s when it hit me; there were red flags! The show had been subtly trying to tell us Kirigan is a manipulative boyfriend not just by great acting and good directing, but by comparing him with the actual anti-hero of the story who I actually love; Kaz Brekker.
Here’s the list of signs you might not notice of why Kirigan is meant to be a Villain instead of an Anti-Hero.

big three more like big tree or some other plant pun
Okay I love Wayne “the Ally” Munson with my whole heart, but I’d love to see more confused Wayne
Like he sees Eddie dressing nicely, and smiling more, and listening to Tears for Fears, and he’s hanging out with Robin and Nancy and Steve basically all the time, so he think’s he knows what’s up
Eddie’s dating one of the girls
(he’s almost right)
So one morning after just Steve stays the night (cause Eddie might be grown, but he’s still Wayne’s kid, and he’s not allowed girls overnight in the house, he’s too young to have grandkids yet) Wayne corners Steve in the kitchen before Eddie’s up, and asks
“So, which of those girls you boys are always hanging out is Eddie’s, and which one’s yours?”
Steve, who is literally wearing Eddie’s shirt and boxers, sporting at least four visible hickeys and has slept over more nights than he hasn’t in the last week can just barely splutter out a pathetically false “We’re all single actually,” before running back to Eddie’s room to hide
And that’s when it clicks for Wayne

#valid reasons why i think eddie and argyle would’ve made perfect friends
Steve has a tell when he starts dating someone, which is why Robin always knows when Steve is going on a hot date. There is a cologne that he designates only for date nights. This is how Robin finds out that Steve and Eddie are dating.
"So, who's the lucky lady this time?" Robin asks, leaning over the counter dangling Steve's keys in front of him with a shit eating grin.
"I have no idea what you're talking about." Steve responds, rolling his eyes.
Before he can grab for his keys Robin pulls them away. "I know you're going on a hot date because of what you're wearing."
Steve scoffs, trying to grab for his keys again with no luck, watching Robin pocket them in horror.
Robin smirks as she looks him up and down. "You're wearing a Henley tucked into the tightest pair of Levi's you can squeeze that ass into..."
"Jesus, Robin." Steve breaths out, ears turning a shade of pink. "I'm..."
Robin puts up a hand to stop him from speaking even further. "Let me finish." She says smugly. "And to top it off you're wearing Drakkar Noir, which always screams, STEVE HARRINGTON IS GETTING LAID." Robin finishes her sentence with a wide grin, seeing as the pink from his ears has now spread to his entire face making it's way down his neck.
Before either one of them can speak the bell jingles as the door to Family Video opens.
"Come on Harrington," Eddie booms from the open door. "I want to get to the diner before anyone can take our booth."
Steve offers a slow smile to Robin, seeing that her jaw has dropped in pure shock. "Can I have my keys now?"
Still speechless, she digs his keys out of her pocket and places them in Steve's hand.
Just as he's about to pull away she grabs his wrist, "I want details, Harrington."
"In your dreams, Buckley."
i feel like i haven't grishaverse posted in a while so... does anybody else ever think about Dunyasha? more claim to the Ravkan throne than its king, a beautiful auburn-haired fairskin assassin with a traumatised past? does anybody else ever think about how she is literally the embodiment of the 'main character' in any fantasy series? and how not only was she Inej's shadow, she was the very sort of person the girl had been taught to respect or follow around or surrender to? because she was so perfect and beautiful and princess-y?
the one thing that makes the grishaverse special is that none of the characters are perfect. they're not beautiful or special. they're just people, which relate to so many of us. Dunyasha was the one in this whole universe that wasn't substantial and yet she held so much resonance and power. do you think about that?
'cause yeah, i do, sometimes.
