Inktober 2018 : Day 4 - G-pen (and a brush pen for the black) I’ve now come down with a horrible cold, so I thought the Mirror Twins would be nice and easy to draw, but every line of this was a battle! TT_TT

It’s been a while since I used my dip pen, I’m always afraid I’ll forget how to use it! I’m happy with how this turned out though. This is the Shaggy Ink-Cap, an edible mushroom native the UK (pick the baby ones if you want to eat them though). They sometimes dye your food black, and you can make ink out of them if you want to. We used to have a patch of these in our driveway but there were never enough to eat, which is a shame because they’re delicious.

Inktober 2018 : Day 1 - Fountain Pentel When Nettle loses her temper at school, the sports field is the biggest casualty. It’s finally time for Inktober, my favourite art challenge of the year! I didn’t have access to my scanner for the first three days, but I was doing the drawings. This year I wanted to try to use some of my less cooperative pens, so this was done with my Fountain Pentel, a bizarre soft nib pen that isn’t a brush but sort of acts like one. I think it’s designed for writing kanji? It splatters a lot when I use it, but it also makes some really nice, scrappy sorts of lines. I think if I keep practicing I’ll be able to do something really good with it.

@sammyborras told me off for DMing her my sketches instead of tweeting them, so here are some I’ve been sharing on twitter. She might have just been bored because she’s not a Resident Evil fan and the inscrutable exhortations of my soul demanded Resident Evil 4 fanart. I will never stop being disappointed that the context cue ‘piggyback’ does not result in an actual piggyback ride, but I love how neither Leon nor Ashley will climb a ladder.

At long last, pictures of Fret and Larkspur in colour, so you can all actually see a major part of the character designs I never, ever show! Also, I’ve finally worked out how to get muted colours out of my coloured pencils, it’s only taken 18 years... Sympathy with their environment makes elves of their type rapidly change appearance to match the plants and light where they live. Fret lives in a birch grove and therefore resembles a birch tree, Larkspur once lived in a beech forest and looked very different, but now she lives in a fetid marsh and appears sodden and mud-flecked, with hair like reeds. Fret had spent a century believing she had burned to death with her forest, and didn’t recognise her at first.

In years when he grows catkins under his ear frills, Sweetpea can sometimes end up with acorns there too! They get pretty uncomfortable at full size, but he’s too proud of them to care. He’ll spend the whole of Autumn showing them off to anyone who will look and admiring them in puddles, then plant them out with great care.
