What brings me comfort, is that technically, Achilles managed to keep his promise to Patroclus of being a hero and happy, the moment before he died.
“Achilles smiles as his face strikes the Earth.”
Call me desperate or whatever, but the fact that Achilles was able to smile meant that, while he was still alive for that infinitesimal moment, he was in fact, famous and happy.
He became the hero of the Greeks that he wanted to be, he’s cemented his name in history. But most importantly, the burdens that came with the prophecy would finally fade from the back of his mind, his fear and grief relating to his own death and his beloved’s, because he knew he would reunite with Patroclus in the afterlife.
When the arrow struck him, Achilles felt unshackled happiness for the first time in years, and Patroclus was the reason. He swore it, after all.
