Prompt - 'So this is me swallowing my pride, standing in front of you saying I’m sorry for that night.’
You felt like you could hardly sit still as you sat at a small table furthest away from the door, trying to get the most amount of privacy for the conversation that was to come. Outside the window snow fell down and you rubbed your hands together, both out of nerves and in an attempt to warm them up.
You had played and replayed how this conversation was going to go a million times over in your head, planned what to say only to scrap each idea as nothing you came up with felt good enough.
The drink you had ordered had been placed on your table only seconds before the bell jingled to announce the door opening and you barely had time to thank the waitress before your mouth went dry. As much as you wanted this conversation, as grateful as you were for it, there was another part of you that wanted to run away.
But you couldn’t run away again, not when you were being given a second chance, even if it was only to have one last conversation before living the rest of your life with regrets over what could've been.
You watched as he scanned the rooms, cheeks red from the cold, before his eyes landed on you. You hated the tension clearly readable even from across the room and how he seemed to have to force his feet to make their way over to you.
“Hi.” He greeted softly, his voice sending an ache through you and you had to force yourself to swallow past the lump in your throat as he sat in the seat across from you.
“Hey,” Your voice was just as soft as his was, if a little more obviously shaky. “Thank you for coming, I’m so glad you made time to see me.”
“Yeah, well, I,” Buck started before he trailed off and shook his head. “It’s good to see you.”
“You too.” You told him with a small smile, meaning it with every part of you. It had only been two or so weeks since you had last seen him but you had missed him more than words could say. “How is everything? How’s the 118, I haven’t seen them since-” You cut yourself off, neither you or Buck needing you to finish that sentence.
“Things are good, work’s busy but I guess it always is more hectic around the holidays.” He smiled and even though it didn’t meet his eyes you were so glad to see it. “Everyone else is good, Christopher misses you.”
“I miss him too.” Breaking up with Buck was bad but it wasn’t just him you had lost, you had lost the friendship you had made with his friends. You didn’t blame any of them for cutting you off, they were his friends first and would always be in his corner before yours but you missed them all so much.
“How’ve you been?” Buck asked and you couldn’t stop the frown that pulled at your lips because truth be told you hadn’t been great but you wouldn’t tell Buck that, not when it was your fault you were having sleepless night after sleepless night, replaying the same scene, the same conversation, over in your head a million times. You spent nights crying when the memories of weekend trips invaded your mind, summer adventures where Buck drove and you sat at his side, watching him laugh as the two of you sung loudly to the radio, remembered the nights tucked against his chest with his arms wrapped around you and feeling safer than you had ever felt in your whole life.
“I’m okay.” Was about as much as you could muster up and Buck glanced away from you for only a moment before his focus was back on you. The lump in your throat was back and you forced it down, as well as the stinging you felt in the back of your eyes.
The small talk was painful to both of you, the reason why you were here hanging heavily in the air but you were still desperately trying to think of the right thing to say. Buck’s guard was so obviously up and for good reason to. You’d hurt him, you knew he had been hurt before, left behind without a second thought and you had done the same to him.
How could you tell him the reason when you didn’t fully understand why you had done it yourself? How could you tell him that you had panicked, that he had been so perfect, so incredible, always thoughtful, always putting you first, how could you tell him that it was so serious that it had scared you.
Part of you knew he would have understood if you had handled it better, if you had sat him down and told him that this was the most serious relationship you’d ever had, that you loved him more than anything and that terrified you. For some reason you hadn’t been able to bring yourself to do that though, to handle it maturely and take a breath, instead you had walked away in a panic only to regret it every day since.
Buck had every reason to keep his distance now, he had every reason not to show up at all but you were glad he had. You loved him so much and if you ever had a second chance with the man you would never take it for granted.
You shifted in your seat, sitting up straighter and wrapped your hands around your mug just for something to do with them. The lump in your throat seemed to be stuck there but you took another breath and forced yourself to address the reason you had asked Buck to come here.
No part of you was expecting him to take you back but you at least owed him an explanation. People were good at leaving Buck without one and after all the goodness and kindness he had treated you with he at least deserved a reason, he deserved to not spend anymore nights blaming himself and wondering what had gone wrong.
“I’m sorry,” you began and watched as Buck sat up straighter too, his eyes wide and sad as he looked at you and you felt your heart ache. “I’m sorry for that night, Buck. I regret it more than I’ve regretted anything.”
“Why?” Was all Buck was able to choke out and seeing the tears in his eyes made yours sting.
“I wish there was a good reason, Buck. I wish I could tell you something that doesn’t sound as pathetic as the truth.” You told him, voice cracking as you spoke and your grip on the mug tightened.
“Just tell me, Y/N/N, I need to know because I have spent every night agonising over what I did wrong.” He forced out, a single tear sliding down his cheek but he made no move to wipe it away. “I thought we were good.”
“We were, Buck. I promise you, if you don’t believe anything else I say believe this, you were perfect. You were so much more that I could ever ask for, so much more than I deserve and it terrified me. It terrified me Buck because I have never felt this way about anyone in my whole life and I didn’t know how to handle it. I didn’t know what to do with the fact that I love you Buck, I love you so much and I’m not saying this to win you back, I know I hurt you and that, that is unforgivable because you were nothing but amazing and you didn’t deserve me walking out on you and for that, Buck, I am so sorry.” By the end of the short speech tears were sliding down both your cheeks and you were glad you had sat at the back in the far corner of the room, grateful for the privacy.
“Y/N,” Buck whispered but couldn’t seem to say anything else and you smiled at him, a smile filled with sadness and regret.
“I’m so, so sorry, Buck.” You repeated shakily, “I said this wasn’t me trying to get you back and I meant that but I have spent every night since that night regretting not just talking to you, every night missing you more than anything. If I could go back and change it, go back and just talk to you, God Buck, I'd do it in a heartbeat and I’d understand you never wanting to see me again, to walk away and be done with me-”
“I love you too, Y/N/N.” Buck told you softly, cutting off whatever you were going to say next and you were glad for the interruption both because you had no idea what you were actually saying, the words just falling out of you, but also because you got to hear Buck tell you he loved you for the first time. “I love you so much and trust me I was scared too, hell Bobby and Eddie can tell you how many nights I kept them up talking about it so I get it, I just wished you’d talked to me before leaving.”
The two of you were sat with tears falling down your cheeks, looking at one another with love, sadness, hope, as well a whole mix of other emotions. Despite not knowing what was going to happen, for the first time since you’d left Buck you felt like you could breathe again, like the weight that had been sitting on your chest for weeks was finally gone and you couldn’t help but smile at Buck.
“I wish I could change how I handled it.” You told him softly and he just smiled back at you, reaching across the table and gently pried your hand off the mug to wrap in his hand, his thumb brushing gently against your knuckles.
“Promise me that next time you’ll just talk to me, Y/N. I can’t handle you walking away again.” Buck told you and your eyebrows knitted together before his words fully registered and your eyes widened.
“Next time? Buck I-”
“You were scared and overwhelmed and didn’t know how to handle it. I told you I get it but we have to talk about these things, I don’t want to lose you.” Buck cut you off and you couldn’t help but smile at his words even as more tears filled your eyes.
“I promise, Buck.” You told him sincerely, still in disbelief that he was so open to fixing things, to not holding your mistake against you.
God, you loved him so much.
“Good because these last few weeks have been hell.” He laughed even as a few more tears slid down his cheeks. “I’ve missed you so much.”
“I’ve missed you too, Buck.” You said softly and the two of you just sat there for a moment longer, unable to look away from each other, unable to stop smiling as you did.
You might not have been able to go back in time, back to that first week of December where you had walked out of Buck’s apartment with tears sliding down your cheeks, but somehow you were here now with Buck, Buck who had the biggest heart you knew, Buck who would bend over backwards to help anyone, Buck who had the capacity to forgive no matter how many times he got hurt.
You swore to yourself as you squeezed the hand still holding yours that you would never take him for granted, would never let another day go by you don’t tell him you loved him, would never mess up your second chance with Buck.

Prompt - ‘Now this is an open-shut case I guess I should've known from the look on your face.’

Whenever Buck was around things were just easier. He made everything around him lighter, always there with a warm smile and would do anything for anyone. It hadn’t taken long for the two of you to become friends, to be inseparably joined at the hip. It wasn’t just that you worked well together, able to read each other without needing words, you were close once the shift ended, whereas most people who spent as much time as you did with your colleagues would part ways, you and Buck left together and spent hours at each other's side.
You knew that your feelings for Buck went deeper than just friendship, it was obvious to anybody looking at the pair of you that you were half way in love with the man. It was also painfully obvious that Buck was right there with you but you couldn’t see it, not even when the others told you about the way Buck looked at you, not even when they insisted that the two of you would be perfect together.
When you looked at Buck you couldn't see how he felt, sure he was all soft smiles and gentle touches but he was the same with all his friends. You couldn’t guess from the look on his face that he could want more than what you had.
You often found yourself getting lost around Buck, gazing at him whilst he spoke as you tried to see what the others claimed was obvious but you never could. Occasionally you thought something could have been there, some longing glance or adoring look but you always shook your head, convincing yourself that you were just seeing what you wanted to see.
You were content with what you had though, you had to be otherwise it would drive you crazy, you had to be because if you weren’t it meant you’d mess up what you already had with Buck and you couldn’t do that. You’d rather silently pine whilst dreaming about what it would be like to love Buck and be loved back than not have him around at all.
It drove the others crazy that neither of you could see what could be, how easy it would be for the two of you to have one little conversation that would lead to so much happiness. They'd watched you and Buck from day one, seen the way your eyes were immediately drawn to him as Bobby introduced you to the team, saw the way Buck jumped at every opportunity to show you around and helped you with the copious amounts of chores given to you as a probie.
The two of you were perfect for each other, you could go from bantering and teasing into deep and meaning conversations, you were capable of getting Buck to let down his walls, him telling you things he had never shared with anyone before, likewise Buck was probably the person on the planet who knew you best. Whilst it was tempting to shake the two of you by the shoulders until you saw sense or lock you in a room until things were resolved everybody knew that you and Buck had to do this alone, with or without their intervention it was pretty much guaranteed that you two would get together.
It wasn’t just in the way you and Buck could flip between serious and playful when the situation called for it. It was the way you would take one look at Buck, needing only a second to scan his features, before you disobeyed Bobby’s direct orders and followed Buck into a burning building, trusting his judgement and following where he went without a second thought, knowing you’d follow him wherever he went for as long as he’d have you whether it was into his car on the way home or into the flames. It was the way he wrapped his arm around you so casually drawing you closer to him, the way his hand squeezed yours so softly in the truck whenever he could see a call had affected you. It was the way you sat on the counter as you watched him dance around as he spent hours cooking a meal just for the two of you. It was the little moments that would be so meaningless to others that you held close, that made you fall further and further for Buck.
There were so many times you’d just wanted to beg him to show you he felt the same, beg him to take your hand and never let go. You were content with what you had but you could selfishly want more too.
Despite the fact that both of you wanted so badly, nothing happened between the two of you for years, long painful years filled with the most beautiful memories. By this point you knew it was love, there wasn’t another word for the rush of emotions you still felt whenever Buck smiled at you, whenever you watched him scoop Christopher up to greet him, when you watched him punch at the bags in the gym, when he held you in his arms, it was love.
The others liked to joke that it would take a miracle for you and Buck to finally see that you had practically been dating for all this time. It seemed the universe agreed with the sentiment of wanting you and Buck together but instead of a miracle it gave you a tragedy instead.
It was a call that sounded bad from the get-go and by the time you rolled up to the scene the fire was out of control, already engulfing the two buildings to the side of it. If it was bad outside it was even worse inside. Obviously you were used to feeling the heat of the flames way too close for comfort, it was the job after all, but something about this one felt different, the flames engulfed everything around them, the ceiling was collapsing in on each floor, cutting off exits. Smoke was thick in the air as you made your way through the building, Buck ahead of you as he cleared the way before helping you through.
In the distance a floor or two up you could hear a child crying hysterically, choking on tears and smoke but at least they were still breathing. You and Buck didn’t know how much time you had but it wasn’t long so the two of you tried to work your way upwards, the stairs not an option anymore. You made it up one floor, the sweat pouring off both of you when the radios cracked to life.
“118, evacuate the building.” Bobby’s voice called through and Buck’s head whipped around to look at you, his eyes shifting from yours to the ceiling, the child’s cries closer now. “I repeat evacuate the building, it’s been declared too unstable, it’s going to crumble any moment.”
You and Buck stayed silent, gazes locked on each other for a few seconds as the rest of the team confirmed they were moving out.
“Buck, Y/N, come in.” Bobby called and Buck shook his head.
“What do you want to do?” You asked him, knowing already what his answer would be. Neither of you would be able to leave without at least trying.
“I’m not leaving.” Buck told you and you nodded that was all you needed and you gestured for him to carry on. “Y/N/N, you gotta leave.”
“Not happening, Buck. Hurry, we don't have long.” You told him, seeing the wide eyed soft look he was giving you behind his helmet and any other time you’d be lost in that expression, thinking it over and over but right now wasn’t the time.
“Take my hand.” Buck said as he struggled over the rubble, holding a hand out to help you and you slid your hand into his palm, even with the heavy uniform you couldn’t help but savour the moment.
Bobby’s voice called through the radio again and as you and Buck headed towards the crying child you listened to Buck arguing with him, refusing to leave before turning the radio off completely.
“If we get out of here alive Bobby’s gonna kill you for that.” You told him and couldn't help the pull of your lips as he laughed before pulling himself up another floor, using the rubble to help him.
“Yeah probably but what else is new?” He grinned, holding his hand out again for you and you let him help you pull you up.
The whole building seemed to shake and Buck grabbed onto your arms, pulling you closer as you waited for something to happen, neither of you breathing until a few seconds passed and the building just about stayed standing.
The sound of the child’s screeching cries snapped you back into action, both of your heads turning right in the direction before Buck let go of you with a nod. You nodded back and followed after him with careful steps, keeping your eyes on Buck and desperately trying to focus on him and not the building that was minutes away from collapsing.
“I got her!” Buck called as he climbed through the rubble and picked the child up, she couldn’t have been more than four, her face red and tear stained as more flooded down her cheeks. “C’mere kid, I gotcha.”
Buck picked the girl up and she went willingly, clinging to Buck’s neck as he walked back over to the pile of rubble blocking the room.
“Hey, I’m gonna pass you to my friend, is that alright? She’s real nice and she’ll take care of you.” Buck murmured to the girl and you couldn’t help but smile as he pried her fingers off him and gently passed her through the gap he had made. “That’s it, you got her.”
Just as you took the girl from him the building gave another violent shake that had you and Buck freezing again, the girl letting out a cry as she buried her head against your coat. This shake was worse than the one earlier and lasted longer and you felt sick to your stomach as you kept your eyes on Buck. Buck went to say something, you could see his mouth opening before he frowned and looked up just as the building shook again and before you could even register what was happening Buck had disappeared from view and where he had stood was now filled with rubble.
You were frozen to the spot for a few seconds before you let out a shuddering breath, head shaking as tears filled your eyes.
“Buck!” You yelled, knowing it was wrong but you placed the girl against the opposite wall and began trying to dig your way through the rubble, desperately calling Buck’s name as you struggled against the heavy pieces of ceiling.
“Buck please, come on!” You sobbed before snatching your radio from your coat and calling for Bobby.
“Y/N, what happened? The two of you need to get out of there now!” Bobby ordered but you shook your head, tears falling down your cheeks as you struggled to breath. “Y/N!”
“Bobby,” You choked out, “Bobby I’ve got a kid here but I can’t, I can’t leave him, Bobby, please.”
You would be surprised if Bobby could make out your words, your breath coming out in quick panicked gasps and you were choking on tears as you let the radio go to keep trying to dig through the rubble, making no progress, every time you moved one piece three more seemed to fill its place.
The radio was silent for a few moments before Bobby’s voice came through again.
“Stay where you are, I'm coming in.” Bobby told you and before the radio cut off you could hear somebody protesting but you didn’t care. Bobby would come in and get the girl and you knew you weren’t leaving without Buck.
The flames were closing in and you knew you didn’t have long left. From below you could hear footsteps and you looked towards the room Buck was trapped in and the flames quickly creeping towards the opening you’d used to get onto this floor.
You picked the girl up again and ran over to the opening, already seeing Bobby, Chimney and Eddie coming towards you, putting out as many of the flames as they could. You were already lowering the girl down and Chimney was quick to grab her but you didn’t stick around after that, you were instantly back at the pile of rubble, gloved hands desperately trying to free Buck.
“Buck, Buck please, please I need you. I can’t lose you, not you.” You sobbed out, pleading with anyone who would listen to just let Buck be ok. There was so much left unsaid between the two of you and you promised yourself you’d tell him everything, you’d tell him you loved him, tell him you didn’t ever want to picture your life without him at your side, you tell him everything if you got the chance to.
You hadn’t even heard Bobby and Eddie join you until you saw their hands dragging rubble away too. The building gave another shake but this time you didn’t freeze, you kept digging, kept pleading, kept sobbing. You needed to get Buck out.
Finally, finally, you managed to get into the room. The ceiling had caved in, crashing down into the room and bringing furniture from upstairs through with it. It was bad but thankfully not bad enough that you couldn’t move around the room. Your eyes found Buck immediately, trapped underneath a piece of rubble, a cut on his head was bleeding and his eyes were closed.
Between the three of you, you managed to free Buck from the rubble, you couldn’t see if he was more injured than just the head wound with the coat covering him but you prayed that he was fine, he had to be because you didn’t know what you’d do if he wasn’t.
The building was shaking now, the foundation ready to crumble and Bobby and Eddie wasted no time in lifting Buck between them and quickly but carefully carried him from the building. Just as Buck was being loaded into the ambulance you heard a rumble and glanced behind you just in time to see the building cave in on itself, the two next to it following in suit.
You didn’t care though, just climbed into the ambulance next to Buck and sat still as you watched the paramedics assess him. Silent tears made their way down your face but you couldn’t stop the choked sob that escaped you when they took his coat off and saw a blood soaked shirt underneath.
The paramedic cut the shirt off to reveal a wound that was still bleeding, the blood seemingly just pouring out. It looked like a piece of the rubble or something else that had fallen through when the ceiling had managed to practically slice him deeply from his stomach across to just above his hip.
“Is he gonna be ok?” You asked and the paramedic shot you a look before getting to work on cleaning and trying to stop the bleeding.
It was still bleeding when you got to the hospital.
They rushed him into surgery as soon as he was out of the ambulance and you followed him into the hospital, told to wait in the waiting room. You didn’t know what you were supposed to do so you did nothing, you stood where they had left you, people moving around you like you were nothing more than a ghost, only able to stand and stare at the doors Buck had been taken behind.
You had no idea how long you stood there, still as a statue with tears falling down your face, but eventually there was a hand on your shoulder. You still didn’t move but you at least registered when Bobby moved to stand in front of you, his own eyes teary but ever the leader he didn’t let them fall, not whilst his team needed him.
“Come on, there’s a room for us to wait in.” Bobby told you softly but you barely heard the words, they sounded like you were underwater, drowning in fear and panic and you could do nothing but wait and see if you’d sink or swim.
Bobby gently took your hand in his and you let him lead you through the halls of the hospital, paying no attention to your surroundings. The rest of the team were already in the room, looking up when you entered but you barely even saw them. Bobby just shook his head and led you to one of the seats, softly pushing you into it before taking the seat next to you.
You didn’t know how long you had sat there, staring ahead but not seeing anything, your thoughts racing, picturing a million and one different scenarios. There were so many things you wanted to say, needed to say. If something happened to Buck, if the worst case scenario happened and he didn’t know you loved him, it would haunt you for the rest of your life.
Bobby’s hand periodically squeezing yours in a gentle but firm grip was the only thing keeping you grounded to reality. Hours passed by without you noticing, no doctors had entered the private waiting room the team had been given. No news was good news though you supposed, it at least meant that Buck was still alive and that was all you could ask for right now.
Eventually though somebody did interrupt the silence, a tired looking doctor entered the room and everyone was immediately on their feet, not daring to breathe as they waited to hear the verdict.
“Mr Buckley made it through the surgery successfully,” the doctor told you all and there was a collective sigh of relief throughout the room, your hand squeezing Bobby’s tightly. “We were able to stop the bleeding and stitch up the wound on his stomach.”
“So he’s going to be ok?” Eddie asked and you felt your heart stop as the doctor was silent for a beat too long. “He’s gonna be ok, right?”
“The wound on the stomach won’t be an issue. It’s the head wound we’re worried about. After taking scans we can see swelling but won’t be able to determine how serious it is until Mr Buckley wakes up.” The doctor said and you felt a fresh wave of tears fill your eyes.
“And when will he wake up?” Bobby asked, glancing at you out of the corner of his eye before focusing on the man.
“I can’t say for sure, it could be a matter of hours or it could be days.” The doctor informed you honestly and you took a shaky breath, speaking for the first time in hours.
“Can we see him?” You asked, voice cracking on the words and you felt Bobby’s thumb brush along your skin comfortingly.
“I’m afraid only one of you will be allowed in the room with him and visiting hours will be over in an hour.” The doctor said before giving the group directions to Buck’s room and excusing himself.
“Go on then, Y/N/N.” Eddie said, causing you to look over at him with a frown but before you could say anything he spoke again. “He’d want it to be you.”
You were silent for a few moments, looking around at the rest of the team who smiled and nodded at you and you suddenly felt a huge burst of love for these people who had become your family. When you turned to Bobby he smiled softly down at you before giving your hand one last squeeze and letting go.
“Thank you.” You managed to choke out before leaving the room and following the doctor's directions.
You had to pause outside of his room before you could enter, looking in through the window at Buck in the bed. He looked peaceful, he didn't look like he was in pain, paler than he should have been and a line of stitches trailing up into his hairline from his forehead.
You took another shaky breath before forcing your feet forward and into the room, sitting down on the edge of the only chair placed next to the bed and taking Buck’s hand in yours carefully.
“I don’t know if you can even hear me,” You said after a long beat of silence where you could only run your eyes across his features. “But if you can, I really need you to wake up, Buck, because I can’t lose you. You’re the best thing in my life and the thought of you not being here with me-”
You cut yourself of with a choked sob, leaning forward until your forehead rested against your joined hands. For so long it had been you and Buck, inseparable, the closest of friends, never seeing one without the other. Of course in your line of work it was always a possibility that something would happen but you tried to ignore it, until moments like this, until you couldn’t anymore. You knew full well you were all in with Buck, in it until the end, just like how you knew that if you hadn’t been able to get him out of that building before then you wouldn’t have left either.
“You have to come back to me because there’s so much I need to tell you, so much I should have already said but I couldn’t but we don’t know what’s gonna happen and we should take every chance we can to be happy, right? And it’s you Buck, it’s always been you who makes me happy. It’s always been you.” You told him, knowing he couldn’t hear you but still it felt good to say it out loud. “Because I love you, Buck. I knew from the moment I met you that one day it would be love.”
You didn’t say more than that, you couldn’t bring yourself to speak through the tears and quiet sobs. Time seemed to pass too quickly because before you knew it a nurse was knocking on the door, giving you a sympathetic smile as she told you visiting hours were over.
You nodded at her and stood up, wiping at your cheeks and ignoring the way more tears replaced them and instead leaned down to place a kiss to Buck’s cheek, letting yourself linger there for a few seconds before pulling away with a whispered goodbye. Once you left the room you only managed to get to the end of the hallway before your knees gave out and sobs wracked your body.
You never hit the floor though, strong arms wrapped around you and pulled you into a chest, fingers carding through your hair. You couldn’t make out what the voice was saying but you could feel the rumbles. You couldn’t see through the tears but that didn't matter, the arms felt safe and your hand came up to clutch at a shirt.
You didn’t remember moving but you felt yourself being sat down on a chair and brought deeper into a pair of arms. You couldn’t say how long you sat like that for before the sobs turned into shuddering breaths and the world started to come back to you.
“There you go, that’s it, just breathe.” The voice was saying and you pushed away from the chest when you recognised it as Bobby’s voice. “You’re ok, take it easy.”
“What are you still doing here?” You managed to choke out, voice hoarse from how much crying you’d done today.
“I wasn’t going to leave you alone. I already called Athena and told her I’d be staying with you tonight, you wouldn’t mind the company would you?” Bobby asked and again you felt so much love fill you because you had no doubt that if it wasn’t Bobby insisting on being her for you it would be one of the others.
“Thank you.” You told him sincerely, nodding your head whilst desperately trying to choke back more tears. “Seriously Bobby, thank you.”
“It’s what families are for.” Bobby shrugged like it was no big deal but both of you knew how meaningful it was, this team who had become a family, who loved each other so deeply meant everything.
Since you’d rode in the ambulance and Bobby had followed behind in the truck, Bobby ordered the two of you an Uber, waiting outside in the cool air for it to arrive. It wasn’t long before you were home, taking a shower because the smell of smoke and fire clung to your skin.
It felt wrong to be here when Buck was still at the hospital, he should be here with you, but there was nothing more you could do tonight. Tomorrow you’d be back at his side bright and early until you were forced to leave again but for right now you let Bobby gently push you onto the couch and press a warm mug into your hands.
It went on like that for days, you were at the hospital every day and Bobby sorted the time off for you back at the station. You didn’t think you could pull yourself back to work if you tried, the thought of doing the job without Buck at your side was unthinkable.
Bobby had taken to picking you up every night from the hospital, it was an unspoken arrangement, you just left Buck’s room and the man was always there waiting for you. Each night he took you to his and Athena’s, who welcomed you with open arms and a warm meal that they both made sure you ate, knowing full well you weren't eating at the hospital.
It was on the fifth day that things changed, two days after hearing doctors murmur about their concerns of Buck not waking up yet, five days of sitting at Buck’s side for hours on end, talking away about anything and everything just to fill the silence.
On the fifth day you entered Buck’s room the minute the hospital allowed visitors and took up your regular seat, taking his hand in yours before placing a soft kiss to the back of his. It was how you started every morning visit. The first few hours nothing happened and then just after twelve you heard a groan fall from Buck’s lips, your head snapping up at the noise.
You stared at Buck, wide eyed and not daring to blink as if it would ruin any chance of him waking up. It took a while but you watched as Buck’s face scrunched up before he swallowed heavily, tilting his head to the side and shifting to get comfortable before he finally managed to force his eyes open.
When he saw you you were already crying, silent tears trailing down your cheeks as you smiled at him in relief.
“What happened?” Buck managed to slur out before he started coughing with how dry his throat felt and you wasted no time pouring water into a cup and holding it to Buck’s lips. “Are you ok?”
You couldn’t help but laugh softly at the question, here Buck was finally waking up after five days of recovering, stitches on his head and stomach after being crushed by rubble and he was asking if you were ok.
God, you loved him.
“Are you ok?” You asked instead, watching as his lips twitched upwards. “Are you in pain? Should I get a doctor? I should definitely get a doctor.”
You went to stand but Buck stopped you, tightening his grip on your hand and keeping you in place. You turned back to face him and that’s when you saw it. It was the look, the one the others kept telling you about, the one with soft eyes filled with love and adoration, the one with a smile that to most people wouldn’t seem particularly special but if you knew what you were looking for you could see it was so important. It was the look and you were finally seeing it, you couldn’t convince yourself you were looking into it too much, couldn’t convince yourself your mind was playing tricks on you because it was right in front of you and it was beautiful.
“Don’t go.” Buck murmured, his voice hoarse and not able to go above a whisper but you heard the plea clearly anyway. “Just…just stay with me.”
“Nowhere else I’d rather be.” You told him honestly, squeezing his hand and not able to look away from his face.
Eventually you were able to snap yourself out of trance you regularly seemed to get lost in around Buck, long enough so that you could fill him in on what had happened and how long he’d be out of it. As you spoke Buck never lost that soft look, never once let his eyes wander away from you and it took all your strength to bite your tongue and not tell Buck how you felt.
Until you realised that you didn’t have to do that anymore. You had promised yourself you’d tell Buck and maybe half an hour after he’d woken up from a five day slumber wasn’t the best time but suddenly you felt the overwhelming urge to do it, feeling like you couldn’t wait another day.
“What’s wrong?” Buck asked, his attention solely on you so he noticed the shift in your features, the slight crease in between your eyebrows, the way your head tilted as you looked at him but your mind was clearly somewhere else.
“I thought you were gonna die.” You forced out around the sudden lump in your throat, frown deepening because those weren’t the words you meant to say. “I thought you were gonna die and I was so scared. Once that rubble came down so did so many regrets, so many things I wanted to tell you but I was too scared to but then you were gone and I needed you to know them because you couldn’t die without knowing.”
“Knowing what?” Buck asked softly, already guessing where this was going, already feeling warmth spreading through his chest at the chance that you felt the same way he had, that he hadn’t been pining alone.
“Without knowing that seeing you is the highlight of my day, without knowing that any day I let pass without talking to you, it just isn’t a good day. Without knowing how deeply I care about you, without knowing that I trust you more than anyone, that I’d follow you wherever you went. You were lying here and I didn’t know if you were going to wake up and the one thing above everything that I needed you to know is that I am so in love with you.” You told him, not taking your eyes off him and watching his face soften even more if it were possible, watching as his eyes watered slightly but he managed to keep any tears from falling.
“Y/N,” he breathed out, unable to say anything for a moment but you weren’t worried, you didn’t take it as a bad sign, you couldn’t, not now that you’d seen that look.
You had to curse yourself slightly because how had you missed that look, it had been years of Buck looking at you like that and you’d missed it. If you had seen that look so long ago any questions regarding Buck’s feelings for you would have been an open-shut case, you would have known from the look on his face that he wanted you as much as you wanted him.
“I’ve wanted to hear that for so long, wanted to tell you that for so long because it’s true, I love you more than I thought I could love anyone. For so long I didn’t think I was capable of loving somebody like I love you, I thought I was too messed up from everything. But then I met you and, Y/N/N I knew from the moment I met you that you were going to be so important. I should have told you years ago but I couldn’t see how somebody like you could feel the same way. But I love you, Y/N, I love you so, so much.” Buck told you, the two of you smiling at each other with matching grins, so happy it was almost too much but you both basked in the feeling.
And everyone was right, nothing changed when the two of you started dating. You came into work together and left together, you stayed over at each other's places until you had found yourself all but moved into Buck’s place already and it just became second nature to call his place home. The only difference was now there were no secret feelings, no wishful, longing glances. Now you could say that’s my man and Buck could take your hand in his, now you kissed Buck whenever you wanted just because you could and neither of you took a day together for granted, not when you had spent so many years pining where you could have been together so now you made sure to savour each day.

Thank you so much for reading!🤎
I’ve been watching 9-1-1 and I love it but I was thinking of a crossover with supernatural and it’s like Maddie and Buck have got an older sister and she ran away with Dean Winchester,when she was younger and they fell in love with each but everyone else thinks that she runaway with a serial killer and that they think she’s in a abusive relationship and Buck and Maddie didn’t know that they had a older sister and they find out because Athena goes to one of the crimes and finds a fingerprint that matches DNA with Maddie and Buck and then tells them.
P.s( I would love this to be a series even if it’s not that long but someone please do this for me even if it’s not that long as long it’s good!!! I would done it myself, but I’m shit at writing)😂😂😂😂😘✨

Buck was enjoying his day off when he first saw you, waving his way. He turned his head, expecting a friend of yours to be behind him but was thoroughly surprised when you approached him. “You’re a firefighter aren’t you? I saw you on the news.”
Buck smiled at the recognition and nodded along, “Yeah I am, how’d you know?” You laughed at his joke before smiling, “You did an amazing job there, just wanted to let you know. I know sometimes you don’t get the props you deserve so… just wanted to come over.” You looked gorgeous, and your smile was infectious. Buck had been lonely lately, feeling as if he’s behind everyone else.
Always wondering what would’ve happened if he never changed, at least he’d have girls around, right?
But then, he met you. And all of a sudden, he was glad he wasn’t the original Buck. The Buck who felt the incessant need to get into bed with almost every girl he wants. “I sadly have to get going, but it was nice meeting you.” Enraptured with your smile, he watched you walk away. As he smiled to himself he realised, “Wait! I didn’t—,” You’d entered your apartment already, and he didn’t know your name. But you had left your purse on accident.
He sighed deeply, settling back into the bench he was sat on as his hand tightened around his coffee cup. “Stupid Buck, should’ve asked her name straight away.” Whilst plotting about how he could find out your name, the smell of smoke invaded his senses.
Your building was on fire.
He sprung up straight away, his hands sliding all over his phone whilst calling 911.
“911, what’s your emergency?”
“23 Rayweo Drive, there’s a fire!”
“There’s already been multiple calls sir, units are on their way. May I ask who’s calling?”
“Uhh, Evan Buckley. I’m a firefighter!”
“Okay Evan, can you please—,”
All composure faded away the second he saw you at your window, arms waving frantically. “Help! The doors blocked!” The muffled voice coming through his phone was discarded as he made his way up the fire escape. The conjoining apartment had a balcony only about three to four metres from yours, Buck jumped across before grabbing the metal table on yours.
Your apartments glass door shattered as Buck made his way inside, the sirens were getting closer. “Hello? Where are you?” Buck held his arm infront of his face, searching the place for you. “In here!” Your apartment wasn’t fully engulfed yet, the kitchen and entrance were inescapable. But the rest only had small fires, yet to grow. Your bedroom door was untouched but had ceiling debris blocking you from leaving.
Buck went right into action, carelessly throwing the debris to the side before bracing himself, “Move away from the door!” You stood in the corner of the room as Buck pummelled through, ending up on the floor. You rushed over, “Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?” His coughs were rapid, “I’m— i’m okay, let’s get you out of here…” A soft smile came across your lips, “Y/n.” He smiled back, “Buck.” The two of you slowly made your way out, but you stopped and stared.
A painting of yourself and your best friends, hung on the wall. The frame was gold, and melting. Your first ever apartment, up in flames with some of the most precious memories and moments of your life. “Hey, I know it’s a bit of a shock but we need to go.” Buck turned around to look at you, and at the right moment since the ceiling caved in on you. “Wait!”
Your hand waved around trying to grasp something as you held your breath. Were you going to die? All you could feel was a throbbing pain in your head, you’d fallen head first. And as your eyes closed you felt two hand grasp your arm, attempting to pull you out. “Stay with me!” Buck pleaded.
You woke up as you were being lifted onto the stretcher, eyes adjusting to the brightness. “Where— what’s happening?” The paramedic to your right smiled, “Welcome back, can you tell me your name?”
“Y/n/n!” Buck rushed to your side as you smiled, “Buck.” His hands brushed away the hair from your face, “Yeah, I’m here. Right here baby.” You smiled as they lifted you into the ambulance. Buck looked up, “I’m riding with you guys Hen.” The girl, who you assumed to be Hen nodded. You held onto Bucks hand the entire ride, earning some stares from Hen and Chimney.
When they thought you were out, they started questioning him. “You know her don’t you?” He nodded, “I do.” You opened your eyes, as everyone’s attention fell back on you, “Hey there, how ya feeling?” Chimney asked as you smiled, “Good, heads hurting a lot though.” Hen nodded, “You did take a bit of a fall, it’s a given. Your vitals look normal, seems like it’s just a concussion and some smoke inhalation. A few nicks and bruises, you’ll be out in no time sweetheart.”
“She’s right, you’re gonna be okay. Is there anyone you’d like us to call?”
“My mom. Her number is…” Your eyebrows furrowed at your lapse of memory. “Her number is…” You tried again to no avail, “Oh my god, I can’t remember. Why can’t I remember?” Hens face drained, “Uhm, you may have hit your head harder than we thought. Is your phone on you?” You shook your head, “It broke when I fell.”
The ceiling was all of a sudden the most interesting thing in that ambulance. How the hell did you forget your own mother’s number? You tried your hardest to recall but it was hopeless. You tried your fathers, and nothing.
“Maybe a sibling? A boyfriend?”
“I don’t have siblings. No I do, a sister maybe? Or is it a brother? My boyfriend… I—,” Buck watched as you tried your hardest to remember things, and he hated it. He felt horrible, watching you struggle. He just wanted to shout at you that he was here, you didn’t need anybody else. He muttered under his breath, “I could be your boyfriend.” You turned your head, “You’re my boyfriend?” Hen and Chimney looked up at him, “You’re the man? Why haven’t you said anything?”
He was going to disagree, he really was. But with you looking up at him so hopefully he couldn’t help himself. “I didn’t want to confuse her, especially if she didn’t remember. That’s not wrong.. is it?”
You shook your head. “No, no it’s not. I’m just glad you’re here.”
The last few days had been a blur, sitting around or laying down. Nurses fluttering in and out with a million questions of ‘How are you feeling?’ or ‘Do you need anything else?’
Yes, to go home. You wish you could yell at them, but then again, you didn’t have a home. But through it all, you had your boyfriend. Who was nothing short of a gentleman. Always with a smile on his face, always asking how you were. And with him you just wanted to answer his questions.
“Discharge papers are all signed, you’re free to go sweetie.” The nurse beamed as you sighed, “Thank you so much. Have a nice day.” As she left you squealed before hugging Buck, “Whoa there, slow down sweetheart.” You rushed back, “I’m sorry, I’m just so ready to leave this place, and eat real food.”
Buck laughed at your growling stomach, “I promise to cook for you every night.” He pledged with a hand to his heart, “Oh shut up! Quick question, does this mean I’ll be staying with you? Until I find a new place and talk to my insurance company?” Buck frowned at the idea of you leaving him, “I know this might seem a bit quick but, what’s the point in you moving out? When you could just move in with me? I mean… you’d never have to worry about a fire with me.”
You grinned at him whilst picking up your purse and slinging it over your shoulder. “I already look like you since I’m wearing your clothes. You sure you want me 24/7?” He’d want you glued to him if he could. “Of course, I could never get sick of someone so pretty.” Buck flirted as your cheeks heated up, his hand traced your back sending tingles up your spine. He cupped your face and brought you closer.
Your lips were soft and sweet, the lip-balm you used was flavourful and he couldn’t get enough. His hand traced down your back, pulling you closer into him as you smiled into him, “Buck.” Your voice was muffled as he continued on, you put your hands on his chest and pushed back, “Stop, we’re in public.” You giggled as he threw his head back, “If anyone looks at you I’ll just punch em’.” You gasped, “Buck!”
He raised his arms, “What?” The two of you finished packing up before saying your goodbyes to the nurses that had taken care of you. “You never told me you had a jeep.” Buck laughed, “I was kind of hoping you’d remember, you love her.” You nodded at his words, “I can definitely see why I did, or do.” When you arrived at his place you were irrevocably in love.
“I love the exposed brick!” Buck set your purse down on the counter as you ran your hands along the walls before making your way to the couch. “And the couch is tucked away, it’s like a bit of privacy yknow?” Buck leaned against the counter with his arms crossed, “Well duh, you’re the one that helped me pick it.” He knew you hadn’t of course, but it was somehow easy for him to block her out and replace her with you.
“I did?” You looked his way as he walked over before standing in between your legs, “You loved this place a lot. So I got it as a surprise.” You smiled at him before pulling him down on top of you, “Why don’t we spend the rest of the day at home, and you tell me all about you and me?” He smiled at the sound of ‘home’, your home.
And that’s exactly what happened, the rest of the day he spent making up an ideal version of the two of you. Of how you met, how the two of you were yet to tell anyone since you really loved keeping it to the two of yourselves. And how he was always a ‘in the moment’ type person, explaining the lack of photos together. You then went out to buy yourself a new phone, and trade over the SIM card.
“Hey babe?” You called out to him as he cooked in the kitchen, “Yeah what’s up?” He glanced over his shoulder to you, “I can’t find you in my phone.” Buck breathed in, he forgot about that. “We… had a bit of a fight the day before. Pretty sure you blocked me or something, and since I’m petty, I did the same thing.” You stared at your phone in confusion, “I’ve never blocked someone, especially over something as simple as an argument.”
“Well, you have. Your brains a bit fuzzy babe, it’ll come back to you soon enough.” You glanced up at him, suspicion filling through you. “Alright, can I grab your phone and put my number in?” He nodded before pointing to the bed upstairs. You jogged upstairs before unplugging his phone. “My birthday.” You quickly filled in the password and were met with a million messages and calls.
Hen: Buckkkk, reply to us. Are you okay?
Cap 🔥: Buck, you need to call in if you’re not coming.
Maddie ❤️: YOU HAVE A GIRLFRIEND?
Eddie: There’s no way you have a girlfriend and just forgot to tell me.
Eddie: I’m coming over.
These guys must be his friends and coworkers. But you couldn’t help but wonder, had he seriously not told any of them that he has a girlfriend? Not even a hint? The last text from Eddie was only half an hour ago, which meant—
RING!
The doorbell rung out as you made your way downstairs, “Hey, no I’ll grab the— door.” Buck was late to it, as you swiftly opened the door to reveal, “Eddie!” He smiled, “Hey Buck, and you must be?” You grinned, “Y/n, but you can just call me Y/n/n. Please, come in!” You opened the door wider to reveal a kid, “And who’s this?” Eddie had his hand on the kids back, “Y/n, meet my son Christopher.” You kneeled infront of him before stretching out your hand, “Well hello there Chris, I’m Y/n and it is very nice to meet you.”
“Hello Y/n. Buck never told us he had a girlfriend.” You laughed at the comment as the two shuffled in before settling on the couch, “Well, if it’s any consolation, we hadn’t really told anyone yet. So technically you’re the first to officially meet me. None of my friends or family know about Buck yet.” Chris smiled, “What do you mean officially?”
“Well technically, everyone’s kind of met me already but I was rescued from a fire.” Eddies face dropped, “Oh my god, I completely forgot to ask, are you doing okay? It must’ve have been hard to recover.” You appreciated his empathy, “Yeah, it was a bit difficult at first but I was in the hospital. I mean, it was my first apartment and it went up in flames, it’s pretty hard to just get over it. But Buck has been an absolute angel, I’m really lucky to have him with me. I’ve been having memory issues, to the point where I wake up and forget where I am,”
“Oh god, have you been put on any medication?” You nodded, “I have, and it’s been helping. I think with the days my memory will come back. I mean I didn’t even remember Buck and I were together in the ambulance.” You laughed as you looked over at Buck, he chuckled at the joke whilst Eddies eyes flicked between the two of you before laughing dryly.
“Dinners ready!” Buck shouted out, the conversation was getting a bit too much for his liking. The four of you stuck to light topics at the dinner table on account of Christopher as well as you. And it was super enjoyable for you, Eddie is an amazing father and you could see how close Buck was with him and Chris.
“Well I think it’s time for this one to go to bed.” Eddie rose up before collecting the plates, “Hey no, you’re a guest, you don’t have to clean up.” You spoke as you grabbed the plates from him, “No no, you should be resting Y/n/n.” You both made your way around, “Okay we can both do them. You wash, I dry.” Buck sat on the couch with Chris playing video games, whilst simultaneously trying to eavesdrop.
“It’s way too late for the two of you to be driving home no? I’m sure you could stay. Me and Chris upstairs and the men on the floor seems just right,” Eddie threw his head back laughing, “Ohh, I see how it is!” You bumped his side and he bumped right back.
If all of Bucks friends were this great, he would’ve had to be one of the luckiest people around.
Chris and Eddie did end up staying the night, but the two men couldn’t sleep. So Eddie and Buck ended up having a few late night drinks, “So, Y/n. She’s absolutely incredible. So I have zero clue how you ended up with her.” Buck shoved his arm, “Hey I am a catch.”
“That I’d throw right back out.” Eddie joked as Buck rolled his eyes, “But you never told us anything about her, and I’m not gonna lie, I’m a bit disappointed. We usually talk about everything Buck. And I know you well enough to know when you’re talking to someone.” Buck sighed, “It’s… complicated.”
And the weight of his secret was bound to come crashing down at some point, right?
Eddie stood with his head in his hands trying to understand everything his best friend had tried to tell him. “So you kidnapped her?” Buck immediately turned to him, “What? No! We were in the ambulance and she assumed I was her boyfriend, and god if you’d seen the look on her face you’d understand why I said yes. She was all alone, her apartment was burned down and her phone was broken. Maybe if it was some random person I wouldn’t have said yes, but I’d talked to her before. I knew she didn’t deserve anything that was happening to her. And she wouldn’t have a place to go if she couldn’t even remember her friends or a phone number.”
“So you took her in, to be a nice person? Were you going to kick her out when she remembered? What if she calls the cops?” Eddies head had about a million scenarios rushing through right now, “Eddie, please. You know me, I’m not a bad guy. If she starts to remember then I’ll tell her. But, we’ve gotten along so well these past few days, like you said she’s incredible.”
“Oh god, don’t tell me you fell in love with her.”
“Well…” Buck scratched the back of his neck as Eddie groaned, “Buck are you serious?” Eddie screeched, “Shh! Do you want to wake her up? Look, if she realises then I’ll explain everything I promise. But it’s not like I’m holding her hostage. I’m just trying to give her a place to call home before she gets back out there.”
“Buck, she calls you ‘babe’, and you do too. You have a million nicknames for her. Every time you get the opportunity you kiss her. It’s wrong, she has no clue what’s happening here.” Eddie tried to rationalise with him but it was no use. Buck sighed, “I know, it’s just— I know her. I met her before the fire and she was so nice, I was going to ask her out but then this all happened. And it’s not like she doesn’t like me either, is it really so wrong?”
“I guess not, but you need to tell her. If she really likes you, then I guess she’ll give you another chance to actually take her out.” Buck rushed forwards and hugged him, “You think she’ll give me another chance? Thank you Eddie!” Eddie scoffed, “You really like her huh?” Buck couldn’t help but look back up at you, “I do.”
Your eyes were wide open, adjusted to the dark. Eddie and Bucks conversation was playing over and over in your head, he lied to you. But again he wanted to keep you safe, would you be homeless right now if it weren’t for him? Or would you have found a friend?
The good and bad parts of the situation were equal in your eyes. He’d been lying to you, kissing you and treating you as if you were his girlfriend. Taking advantage of your state of mind, but you’d met before, and he was going to ask you out. And if he had, you knew what your answer would have been.
Yes.
And it wasn’t as if he was dangerous, or at least you hoped not. Tiredness came over you, the last thing you remember hearing being the sound of Bucks voice wishing you sweet dreams.
By the time you woke up Eddie and Chris were long gone, Buck was busy cooking up breakfast. “There you are sleepyhead.” His smile was always bright when directed at you, and with the morning glow you could only see the good. “Buck, we need to talk.”
Who knew five words could strike such fear?
And you sat infront of him, “I know. I know about the fire, and the fact that you aren’t my boyfriend. And hey—,” Buck didn’t waste a second apologising, “I’m so so sorry I knew I should’ve told you straight away. But when you said I was I went along with it and that was stupid. But I didn’t want you to be alone and if you want to go I will—,” Your laugh stopped him in his tracks, “It’s okay Buck. I’m not mad, well I am a little since you’ve been kissing up on me every chance you get but… you’re just a bit dumb in how you went about it.”
Buck smiled as he set out breakfast for the both of you, “Now how about this. We finish up breakfast and then you take me out on a proper date where we get to make all of our firsts for real. I really do like you Buck, your heart was in the right place, execution? Not so much.”
And the rest of the morning you spent laughing at Buck and his love sickness. “You know you’re kind of obsessed with me, it’s a bit creepy.” Bucks face immediately drained, he stared at your back as you washed the dishes. “But my heart was in the right place right?” He sounded desperate with the sentence, “Sure.”
You liked Buck, there was no denying it, but you couldn’t shake the feeling of weirdness.
As the two of you continued getting to know eachother Bucks happiness sky rocketed. And everyone could tell, “If you smile any longer we’ll need to tattoo it onto your face Buck.” Bobby joked as everyone teased Buck, “I am in a happy, loving relationship. Be proud of me.” Eddie couldn’t help himself, “Does she know that?”
The whole table burst out laughing as Buck groaned, “She has her memory back can we please not joke about it.” Hen pointed at him with her fork, “Trust me, we’re not laughing at her, we’re laughing at you Lover Boy!” The footsteps coming up the stairs were drowned out by the sea of laughter, “If Shakespeare was alive you’d for sure be an inspiration Buck.” Chimney spoke from the kitchen.
“Wonder what he’d name it.” Your voice caused the five of them to turn your way, “Y/n!” Eddie shouted as you engulfed him in a tight hug. “If I squeeze too hard you’ll forget my name,” He joked as you punched his abdomen, “Don’t make me hurt you.”
“There’s the famous Mrs Buckley.” Bobby smiled as you made your way over to him, “Cap!” He opened his arms up to you as Buck grinned, his team finally meeting you made him feel happy. “Great to finally meet you, but I feel like we already know you.” He spoke as he pulled out a chair for you. “He’s right, Lover Boy never shuts about you.” Chimney teased as you kissed Bucks cheek.
“Well aren’t you sweet? We all know how lovesick he is I presume?” The team laughed as Buck rolled his eyes, “Yeah, yeah let’s get the jokes out the way.” You smiled before holding onto his hand.
Buck downplayed just how much he loved his team, they were like a family, and now you were apart of it too. Buck was grateful to be in it, especially with you being the new addition. But every once in a while he couldn’t help but remember how he got you.
Love At First Sight.
definitely inspo for another dark buck!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Is Eddie home?"
(Y/n) didn't bother to try and smile. She didn't put on the brave face she had been practising on the ride down here. She didn't stand tall or square her shoulders or try and look the image of calm and collected like she hoped to when she thought about coming down here.
She knew she looked a mess.
Her jumper was hanging off her shoulders, being two sizes too big for her small frame. Her arms were bound around her chest to try and stop herself from shaking. Her lips were chapped and bloodied from where she had picked and bitten them over the past week out of nervous habit. If anyone looked at her hands they would see she had bitten off most of her nails and her thumbs were raw from where she'd started biting the skin too.
She looked windswept with disshevelled hair and dried tears swiped across her cheeks. And with a subtle trembling set in her bones, she looked almost hypothermic.
This was the right house; (Y/n) knew it. She recognised her brother's signature truck in the drive. And when she leaned to look around the kindly woman in the doorway and peered into the hall, she saw the pictures hanging around the walls. Eddie and Chris, scattered throughout the house. She was at the right address.
"I'll go get him for you."
When the woman turned and headed back inside, (Y/n) let out the breath she had been holding in and tried to smile.
That had to be Carla. The woman Eddie talked about a lot who helped look after Chris when he was at work.
There had been a look in her eyes, a small sense of familiarity and (Y/n) guessed Carla recognised her from one or two of the pictures Eddie had about the house. She just didn't know or realise who (Y/n) was now she was here in the flesh.
"Who is it?" Eddie finished his mouthful of pasta and wiped his mouth on his sleeve before he pushed up from the table.
Who was at the door? He wasn't expecting anyone and he couldn't think who it could be. What young women did he know who didn't work at the station or at Chris's school? It couldn't be anyone from the school coming round at teatime and if it was, Carla would have recognised them.
Just as Eddie stood up from the table, Chris hopped down and sped out the kitchen first to find out who was at the door. His interest was peaked at having a stranger at the door.
"Chris-" A shiver rolled down Eddie's spine and he cringed when Chris let out an excited scream. Who on Earth had turned up tonight?
"Auntie (Y/n)!"
Adrenaline coursed through Eddie's stomach and he hurried up when he heard Chris. (Y/n) was here? His youngest sister? Why was she in LA? Why hadn't she told him she was coming down? Eddie would have picked her up from wherever she arrived in town, he would have made the house look a bit tidier. He and Chris would have come to get her and shown her around and gone out for tea if they knew she was coming down.
He watched with wide eyes and a growing smile when Chris barrelled over to the front door and latched his arms around (Y/n)'s waist. He burrowed his head into her abdomen and clung to her like a monkey, still screaming excitedly into her stomach.
Out of all three of Eddie's sisters, (Y/n) was the one he was closest to and she was the one who had the best connection with Chris. It had been extremely hard on them both to leave (Y/n) back in Texas. And when (Y/n) moved, she moved closer to LA but she was still over an hour's drive from them.
Eddie could handle leaving his parents and his two other sisters, but he didn't want to leave his youngest sibling who he had taken care of all his life.
It had broken Chris's heart to know that his aunt would no longer be ten minutes away.
"Hey buddy- oh, you've grown so much." (Y/n) couldn't keep the tears from falling down her face, both from joy out of seeing Chris, and pain from how tightly he clung to her.
"You're here!"
"I thought I'd surprise my boys," (Y/n) leaned her head down and pressed hundreds of kisses against the top of Chris's hair until he was squealing and squirming against her. She held him tighter and willed herself not to burst into tears but as soon as she lifted her head and looked at Eddie, the waterworks started again.
"Alright, my turn. Chris, go finish dinner with Carla while I help auntie (Y/n) in please." Eddie gently turned Chris around in the other direction and gave him a nudge. (Y/n) wasn't going anywhere and Chris could cling to her and tell her everything that had been going on as soon as he'd finished his dinner and Eddie had the chance to hug his sister for himself.
Once Chris toddled off into the dining room, clapping his hands along the way, Eddie turned back to face (Y/n). He smiled brightly down at her and gasped when she flung her arms around his neck and reeled him in for a hug.
"I can't believe you're here. Why didn't you tell me you were coming down?" He kissed the side of her head and deadlocked his arms around her waist. But he could feel the smile fading from his face when he felt how badly she was shaking.
His hand planted down in the middle of her back and he tensed up the longer she held onto him without the intention of letting go.
Panic surged through him when he felt her tears soaking into his shoulder and Eddie started to realise she wasn't crying out of happiness, at least not anymore. And his eyes darted down to the doorstep in front of him and he could feel a new surge of panic igniting in his stomach.
Two cases.
That was more baggage than just a flying visit. Why had she turned up with all her belongings? Why didn't she call him? What had happened that he didn't know about?
"(Y/n), what's wrong? Why all the bags?" Eddie's hand pressed firmer into the middle of (Y/n)'s back when she tightened her arms around his neck and refused to pull away or look up at him. He didn't like this. Eddie never liked it when any of his sisters were upset or panicked. With their dad working away so much, Eddie had been the man of the house and he had always been the one his sisters went to with a problem they needed him to sort out.
He protected all of them.
He kept his left arm bound tight around her waist and he reached his right hand out to grab her cases. He dragged one inside and did the same with her other bag before he shuffled back with (Y/n) still in his arm so he could shut the door.
(Y/n) stayed limp and easily moveable, letting Eddie guide her through into the living room instead of standing in the hallway. But she started to shake when he finally leaned back and gripped her chin. He tilted her head up so they were finally looking at each other and when his thumb swiped across her cheek to brush away a tear, (Y/n) felt a whimper bubbling past her lips.
"C-can I stay with you, just f-for a while. Please?" Her hands unhooked from Eddie's neck and she let him hold her elbows and guide her to sit down in the armchair.
Once she was sat down, Eddie perched on the coffee table in front of her and rested his elbows on his knees as he leaned forward and arched his back out. His hand dragged across his jaw and down his chin while he nodded and tried to keep a calm expression on his face. His eyes kept wandering across to the dining room. Whatever (Y/n) was going to tell him clearly wasn't something good or anything she wanted Chris to overhear.
Eddie got the feeling that (Y/n) didn't even want to tell him what was going on and that hurt. She never had a problem talking to him about anything, but there was something in her eyes that told him this was harder than ever.
"You know you can always stay with me and Chris, you don't have to ask. What's going on? You didn't call, I could have come and got you… has something happened?"
(Y/n) tangled her hands and clenched her fingers together as tight as she could until they started to ache and burn.
"You, um, you know I said I was seeing someone, while I was staying with Chrissy?"
It was no secret that a little while after Eddie left Texas, (Y/n) had moved away too. She had gone to stay with their sister Chrissy who lived closer to LA than she did to Texas. It had been good to get away from home and have a fresh start, and (Y/n) had met someone while she was there.
Her eyes danced down to stare at Eddie's knees but she saw the way they tensed and how his hands curled into fists between his thighs.
"Did he try to hurt you?"
Eddie was wary of anyone each of his sisters got involved with. He didn't hate them right away, but he was cautious. He didn't want anyone to walk right in and think they could hurt the most important people in Eddie's life who he had raised since childhood.
He wasn't too thrilled this time that he knew nothing about the guy (Y/n) had been seeing. He didn't even know his name. All he knew was that (Y/n) had met someone and seemed to be happy with him. No photos, no pictures, no family get togethers where he tagged along. The relationship seemed fairly new so Eddie hadn't asked many questions or probed too deeply into it.
Something told him that maybe he should have. Perhaps he should have asked (Y/n) a little more about this guy and tried to make more of an effort. But (Y/n) wasn't a teenager or a little girl anymore, Eddie had to step back at some point even if he didn't want to.
"Not exactly… Eddie he scares me." Tears flushed (Y/n)'s face and her hands began to tremble in her lap until Eddie leaned across to hold them.
"Why?" He didn't understand. What kind of sense was Eddie supposed to make out of that?
"He was so nice at first, but he, I don't know… he got controlling, I think he was tracking my phone. He knew every move I made, he kept asking me to move away with him. I tried to end it but he kept coming round and he followed me home from work a few times too."
(Y/n) almost felt stupid for the way she was acting.
He had been kind. He was sweet and caring and loving and everything she thought she wanted in a partner. But (Y/n) didn't want someone to be checking every move she made. She didn't want to feel boxed in and she certainly didn't want to move as quickly as he did. Less than two months with him and he wanted her to move in with him. He even talked about marriage when (Y/n) knew him less than a year.
She wasn't ready for that and saying no to him was like talking to a brick wall. Her words seemed to bounce back and hit her in the face and he just pretended like she hadn't spoken at all.
He would worm his way back to her, attach himself to her and kiss her and engulf her and overload her until she changed her mind because it was easier to give in than stand up to him.
"Where is he now? Has he threatened you… (Y/n) you know you can tell me, leaving home in the middle of the night isn't like you."
She felt stupid. She felt stupid for leaving so suddenly as if her ex had been physical with her. His threats weren't like normal, obsessive threats. He didn't say he would hurt her if she left or he would always find her or get her back. He kept saying fate would bring her back to him and she could try all she liked, but she wasn't going to get far.
He scared her rather than threatened her and with how calm and placid he was, it just made things even worse. Not once had her ex hit her or pushed her or gave her a mark on her body that wasn't a simple love bite. He never became physical and during arguments he rarely even raised his voice at her. But he scared the living daylights out of her.
"I told him it was over, but he just said he'd be back for me soon, I don't know what he meant by that. Eddie I need to get away from him, I… oh God, promise you won't be mad at me or freak out, please?" (Y/n) dragged her fingers through her hair as more tears started to cascade down her face.
She hadn't told anyone yet.
"Why would I freak out?"
Adrenaline bubbled to life in Eddie's stomach and shot up through his chest. What was she going to tell him that would freak him out?
He leaned back and straightened his shoulders while his hands moved to rub up and down his knees to stay calm and collected. His lips pressed into a thin line and his eyes stayed concentrated on his sister, waiting for her to tell him what the next problem was.
When her hands moved to her jumper, Eddie panicked. He thought she was about to lift up her shirt and show him black and blue bruises littering her skin. He thought he would see scars or broken ribs or dried blood or some sort of injury that told him he had to find this guy and beat him to a pulp. He feared what his sister had been through and what kind of torment someone had dared to put her through.
He wasn't expecting a baby bump.
(Y/n) bit down on her lower lip so harshly it began to bleed again and her fingers trembled as she pulled her jumper up near her bra. She hadn't told anyone she was pregnant. She couldn't tell Chrissy, she would go straight to their parents. (Y/n) couldn't tell their parents because they would be disappointed or try to get involved and tell her she needed to marry this guy. And she didn't want to marry him.
Eddie was the only one (Y/n) could trust who wouldn't freak out, get angry with her or try to tell her what to do. He married Shannon because she was pregnant, but that had been easier. Eddie had been in love with her, marriage was something he wanted. For (Y/n), marriage to someone this pent up and controlling wasn't what she wanted. No matter how desperate her ex was to have her back and marry her.
"How- how far along? Does he know?" Eddie rubbed his hand across his jaw and let out a breath he didn't know he was holding in.
He would expect this from Chrissy. He always expected her to be the one to get into a strange relationship and have a baby. He didn't think (Y/n) would be caught up in a situation like this and it hurt. Eddie should have kept up better contact with her, called and visited her more often and protected her from something like this.
"Nineteen weeks, I think. I can't tell him, Eddie he'll never let me go, ma will want me to marry him and I- I can't-"
"Hey, hey calm down." When Eddie cupped her face in his hands, a tidal wave of tears streamed down her face as she hiccupped and tried to breathe. "I won't let anything like that happen, I promise. Just tell me what you want to do and I'll help you."
"I wanna d-do this on my own, without him. Here in LA, a new start."
(Y/n) wanted her baby. She had nothing against abortions, but that wasn't what she wanted. She was pregnant and she was going to have this baby, despite what her parents were going to think or what her ex was going to try and do.
He didn't know and that was what she wanted. He had no idea about her family or where her big brother lived or what he did for a living. (Y/n) could find a job easy here in LA. She could find herself a place nearby and be around Eddie and their Tia and Abuela and she could be surrounded by family and make new friends up here.
She could raise this baby on her own with her family and that was what she wanted to do. She just needed a little help.
Eddie was always telling her how good it was here, how Chris loved it and they had new friends and a great work family. (Y/n) thought she could make a life for herself here with her brother and family. His work family could become her new family here, Eddie always said how they were looking out for him and Chris and helping them any way they could.
"You can stay here as long as you want, Chris might not let you leave. And I'll make sure that creep doesn't find you, I won't let him near you."
Reaching out, (Y/n) curled her hands around Eddie's wrist and brought his hand to her lap. She ran her thumb across the back of his hand and managed to smile a little. "Can I ask another favour?"
"Anything."
"Don't tell ma or papi, not yet. Once I'm settled and sorted, I'll explain… I just can't deal with that hassle right now."
(Y/n) knew what their parents would do and say. They would try and get (Y/n) to come home. They would fret and try to talk her out of this, tell her to go back home to them and start fresh there or find her ex and talk things through with him.
They wouldn't be pleased to know (Y/n) was going to try and raise a child on her own when her ex was out there somewhere, unaware what was happening and perfectly happy to raise a child with her.
But this was her choice. She had chosen to come down here and (Y/n) wanted to stay. She wasn't here for a vacation. This was a fresh start, a chance for (Y/n) to try and make a better life and be with her family. She wanted to make new memories and a new life for herself and be happy here with her family.
She kept her eyes focused on Eddie's hand, but her smile softened when she felt him lean forward. He cupped the back of her head as gently as possible and leaned over so he could kiss the top of her head.
"I'll explain everything to them when you're ready." He would rather be the one to talk to their parents. He could always talk them down and they wouldn't argue this as much if they knew Eddie was on (Y/n)'s side and doing everything he could to look after her. "Come on, let's go have something to eat."
***
"So, will you introduce me to everyone?"
When Chris squeezed her hand, (Y/n) felt her smile brighten and she leaned her head on top of his when he pressed his cheek against her arm. His free hand curled around her arm and clung to her tighter as if he thought she was about to disappear.
He had barely left her side since she turned up in LA last week. It was as if Chris didn't truly believe that (Y/n) was in town to stay, he thought at any given moment she was going to get up and leave.
Every morning so far, Chris had burst into the spare room to wake (Y/n) up, making sure she hadn't disappeared during the night. And when Eddie was at work, like today, (Y/n) went and collected Chris from school and looked after him. It gave Eddie and Carla a break and gave (Y/n) something to do until her new job got lined up.
Eddie had put in a good word for her at the call centre and her interview went extremely well. She was going to be on the 911 calls in a week or two.
"Yeah. Bobby lets me ride in the truck sometimes." Chris tugged on (Y/n)'s hand and guided her into the station. He pointed at the trucks and weaved between them with (Y/n) hurrying to keep up with his strides.
"That's the Captain, right?"
"Yep. Dad!" He swung their hands between them and looked around the station for Eddie. He smiled brightly when (Y/n) kissed the top of his head and moved her free hand to his shoulder, clinging to him as he took her towards the stairs.
"Buddy, what're you doing here?"
"It's uncle Buck! He's the best." Chris stuck his thumb in his mouth and grinned when he watched Evan jog down the stairs towards them with a wide grin and his arms stretched out.
(Y/n) couldn't breathe. All the air got caught up in her chest as a lump formed in her throat and her eyes welled up with tears. She could feel her heart pounding against her chest so harsh she thought her ribs were going to fracture. And when her pulse thudded in her ears, it was all she could hear and feel as her skin pulsed and throbbed.
Before she knew what was happening, all the blood drained down to her feet and her eyes rolled back in her head that felt like it was pumped full of helium.
"Eddie get down here!"
"Dad!" Chris let go of (Y/n)'s hand when her head flopped forward until her chin was tucked into her chest and she started to drop. He watched her knees cave in but his faltering smile paused when Evan rushed forward to grab her. He watched Evan hook his arms around (Y/n)'s waist and let her fall into his chest, saving her from a harsh fall to the floor like he was a knight in shining armour.
Evan darted his eyes around before he carefully stepped closer and went down on his knees, easing the girl in his arms down along with him. Once he was on the ground, Evan carefully turned her around so her back was slumped into his chest and he reached his hand down to cup her chin and tilt her head back on his shoulder.
"What's going on? Buck what happened?" Panic flooded Eddie's voice as he bolted down the stairs and jumped down the last three to rush across the station floor. He reached inside the back of the open ambulance and swiped a medic bag before he made a beeline for his family.
He watched Chris flop down on the floor, his thumb still hidden between his teeth out of anxious habit while his eyes focused on Evan and (Y/n).
Eddie knelt down beside them, briefly ruffling Chris's hair to try and calm him down before he looked down at his sister. She was laid motionless in Evan's arms, slumped down and breathing fast and shallow.
"She- she just fainted, is that normal? Is this your sister?" Evan curved his right arm around her chest and began smoothing his knuckles up and down her sternum to try and apply pressure and bring her back round.
"Yeah, yeah this is (Y/n)."
Eddie kissed Chris's cheek and patted his back before he nudged his son to gently ask him to shuffle back a few paces.
"(Y/n)? Are you back with me?" Shuffling around in the medic bag, Eddie found a blood pressure cuff and slid it up her right arm. He set her hand down on his thigh and brushed his thumb across the back of her hand for a few seconds.
Her head was starting to move from side to side on Evan's shoulder and her fingers started to twitch and clench.
Lifting his gaze, Eddie glanced across at Evan and when their eyes locked, Evan tried to smile politely as he reached down for (Y/n)'s shirt and gently pulled it back down over her stomach from where it had ridden up. Evan sat her forwards and let Eddie take over and have her lean up against him instead.
"Chris, why don't we go get (Y/n) a drink?" Evan waved his hand across at Chris and stood up, letting Chris take his hand and guide him towards the stairs. It would be best to give them both a moment to talk and let Eddie calm her down if she was going to panic. And after collapsing, she could probably use a drink to boost her back up.
"Alright, BP's a little high, nothing worrying." Eddie spoke to himself as he slipped off the cuff and found a heart rate monitor which he clipped onto her index finger. "Hey, there we go." He relaxed a little when (Y/n)'s eyes began to flutter and she tried to focus in on him.
Her hand bashed around shakily until she found Eddie's hand and she gripped as tightly as she could muster. Her head was starting to pulse and throb like she had been whacked and knocked out and her heart was going haywire in her chest.
"What happened?" Eddie watched her eyes dart around and for a second he thought she was looking for someone. But when her gaze settled back on him, she relaxed against him and seemed to melt.
"I- I just went dizzy, I'm okay." (Y/n) gave Eddie's hand a squeeze and tried to muster up a smile. She wasn't sure what came over her. She blacked out quicker than she ever had before, but she felt okay. She wasn't in any sort of danger or hurt in any way, and she had blacked out at the right place.
"Why don't we go sit down? You don't usually pass out very often." Eddie moved so he was crouching in front of her and held his hands out until (Y/n) gratefully took them.
She let him pull her up and leaned into his chest when Eddie curved one arm around her waist and kept his other hand tangled with hers for added support. (Y/n) tilted her head into his shoulder and followed his direction towards the locker room. He wasn't so sure (Y/n) would get up the stairs into the kitchen right now when she was shaking and had only just come back round.
Eddie would rather get (Y/n) sat down in the locker room and make sure she was back to feeling herself before risking moving anywhere else. He still didn't know why she had passed out. He didn't know whether (Y/n) hadn't eaten a lot today, whether she just felt unwell or if it was something to do with the baby. He wanted to keep an eye on her for the time being.
"Are you sure you feel okay?" Eddie moved his hand to her shoulder when she slumped down on the bench and braced her hands on her knees. The way she tilted her head back on his arm and smiled tiredly yet sweetly up at him calmed down one of his many nerves.
"Just lightheaded, I'm sorry."
"Don't be, just stay here a minute while I get Chris and find you a drink, okay?"
(Y/n) nodded and when she felt Eddie kiss her temple, she let her eyes fall closed and started to rake her hands up and down her legs to try and liven herself up a little. She would have to apologise to Chris, she had probably scared him.
Her hand moved to drag through her hair, brushing it back behind her ears and out of her eyes as she took deep, calming breaths.
"I hope you didn't collapse because of me."
Tremors rattled through (Y/n)'s bones until she was trembling back and forth on the bench. Her blood ran cold and disappeared down to her toes as her fingertips went numb and she could barely feel her nails piercing through her leggings into her thighs.
She didn't want to look. She didn't want to turn and look over her shoulder at the owner of that voice she knew she had heard before. But she didn't have to. He walked around until he was stood in front of her, arms casually folded over his chest and his shoulders pushed back into the lockers so he was slanted at an angle.
"Evan." His name fell from her lips in a whisper that he could barely hear, but it made his lips curl into the purest smile (Y/n) had ever seen. And it made her stomach churn.
"Nice to see you too, babe." His hands clenched over his biceps and his head tilted to the side as his eyes stayed focused on (Y/n). He could see she was barely able to catch a proper breath and her eyes were blown so wide there was no colour left in them, just black holes that went on for miles.
"Why… why're you here?"
"Me? I work here. Question is what're you doing here? Last time I checked, you didn't live in LA." Evan pushed off the lockers and took a step closer which caused (Y/n) to lean back and tilt her head up to stay focused on him.
He never told her he lived in LA either. She knew he wasn't from Chrissy's hometown. She knew he was only visiting while he was off sick from his job. But he never said he was a fireman. He told her he worked for the emergency services, but never which department and it never came up because he was recovering from multiple leg surgeries. He hadn't been at work.
Evan never told her where he worked, where he originally lived or the nickname everyone called him. If she'd of known, she wouldn't have come down to stay with Eddie.
If she knew her brother's best friend was the person she was trying to get away from, she would have risked going back home to Texas and faced their parents.
She had landed herself right in the middle of Hell by coming here.
"Did you… was… was this on purpose? Did you always know, about Eddie?" Tears pooled in (Y/n)'s eyes but she couldn't find it in herself to begin crying. She had cried so much about Evan and this whole situation. Crying in front of him didn't feel right and she didn't have the willpower to do it.
She just wanted to go home.
Had he always known? Had he known from the moment he met her that she was Eddie's little sister? Is that why he was so keen on staying in a relationship with her and making this obsession work?
"Finding out I'd fallen for Eddie's little sister was a bonus." He scratched his hand across his jaw and took another three steps forward until he was stood between (Y/n)'s legs. Towering over her like a skyscraper. "This is fate, baby girl."
He hadn't planned anything. He fell for her and once he found out her last name, everything clicked and it made things even better. He had fallen for his best friend's younger sister. And Evan wasn't letting her disappear from him again. She wasn't leaving him when they had a connection, when they had something special that Evan wasn't giving up on.
He knew what they had was what he wanted. Why could everyone else find love and relationships and stick together and start families, but not Evan? Why wouldn't it work for him?
Well, not this time.
This time, Evan was taking control. He had something with (Y/n) and he wasn't letting it go because she was scared to be with him and face that this was special. Evan believed in fate, and he believed that this was a sign. This is what he'd been praying for, and he wasn't letting it go so easily.
(Y/n) could feel the panic dwelling up in her chest and taking over her body when Evan leaned forward. She wasn't sure where his hands were going, but while one hand moved to rest beside her hip on the bench, a chill tore through her when his other hand curved over her stomach.
He knew. He knew what she had tried to hide from him. He knew why she had come down to LA in the vain hope that if he went back to Chrissy's, he wouldn't find (Y/n) there and wouldn't find out she was pregnant.
His thumb glided across her stomach and when he looked down, his smile would of made (Y/n) melt if this situation were any different.
"And now I know you're pregnant, and I can see from that look on your face that it's mine."
(Y/n) wanted to cry when Evan leaned down and kissed her. She wanted to cry for every emotion he's made her feel and every way he'd screwed with her thoughts and emotions and controlled everything she tried to do. She wanted to cry for the baby she had tried to protect and keep safe from him.
But (Y/n) never truly believed she would keep this from him. She had a gut feeling that Evan would find out sooner or later, some way or another. She knew he would find out she was having his baby. And once he knew, he wasn't going to let her go.
And she couldn't stop the way she curled her hand around his wrist when he swiped his tongue across her lips and into her mouth and he bit her lip, devouring every breath she tried to take.
"Don't think for one second that I'm gonna let you keep them from me. This is our baby, you're not doing this without me."
Life with Eddie use to be everything you could ever dream of. Whether it be slow mornings getting ready together, sharing a shower and helping Chris get ready. Or an absolute hurricane ripping through your home whilst the three of you stumble over each other to get ready after a sleep in.
No matter the time of day, you loved whatever you were doing, as long as they were by your side.
And Eddie’s protectiveness use to be just another aspect of your relationship you loved, until you opened your eyes.
It use to be small, his anger.
An incessant colleague reaching out for tips and aid in a new project, you being a senior member meaning it wasn’t uncommon for people to reach out to you. You were one of the best workers at the company, well respected and loved as well as brilliant. And always willing to help someone in need.
He use to love that about you. Until it followed you home.
Chris was currently at a friends house, leaving the two of you to an inside date night, “Now on what planet would I ever sit and watch four movies with the title ‘Die Hard’. You sure as hell can’t die that many times.” Eddie shook his head as you refilled each of your respective glasses.
“Sure you can, just ask Chimney.” You gasped before swatting Eddies arm, “Be nice! And put on our show.” The murmuring voices of your favourite characters was more than enough to lull you into his arms, content washing over you. Your ringing phone however, was ready to disturb the peace Eddie had longed for all day.
“Let me just grab this.” His hand scooped your phone up before you could, “Just get it later.” His dismissive tone made you frown, “Give me my phone, please.” You leaned over to snatch it, walking into the hallway. Eddie couldn’t help but massage his temple, did you seriously chose a phone call over peace and quiet in his arms?
He hadn’t noticed how often you picked up your phone, until it interrupted him. It happened often. When the two of you were cooking together, soft music and ambience long forgotten. Almost falling asleep, cuddling, and out of the blue the world was falling apart without you. Eddie thought he could handle it, you were needed, that wasn’t your fault, right? But what he also couldn’t handle was the secretive nature.
Why did you always walk away? Were you hiding something?
And now you were coming home later, clanging into the house at 11, or 12. Sometimes even later. “Where were you?” Eddie stood by the door as you hung your jacket, “Jesus, you scared me E.” His arms were crossed, shoulders tense as you made your way to him, a smile too wide for his liking. “Work ran late, m’ sorry.” As you walked away, his hand caught onto your wrist.
“Ow, let go.” Eddies grip loosened as you retracted your arm, soothing it, “What is your problem?” You looked up to view a sweet smile, “Nothing, just worried about you. When you didn’t call, I got so scared. This world, it’s scary Y/n, you know that, especially during these times.”
Your eyes watered involuntarily at his saddened demeanour, “Oh Eddie, I’m so sorry, I should’ve called. That’s my fault, forgive me?” Your arms came around his neck, before trailing down to his chest, playing with his name tag. “I forgive you, I can also think of a way you can make it up to me.”
His smile was mischievous, and intentions impure. “Oh? And what would that be Mr Diaz?” His hand was heavy on your back and slithering lower by the second, “I think we have an appointment with a bed tonight.”
“I have work tomorrow, so do you.”
“Cmon, for me?” His eyes were pure evil, and you were more than happy to give in, even if you were tired. Really damn tired, but he wanted you, so you should give in right? You did give him a fright. “Take me away Diaz.”
If you’d noticed the signs earlier, maybe you could’ve gotten away. His jealousy, when it did rear its head, was an ugly shade of green.
A late night, again.
Eddie had been by the door for 10, sitting for 20, pacing the kitchen and stress-eating for another 10 before he finally settled into bed. Wide awake of course. The opening of his bedroom door caused him to stir. He watched as you slowly moved around, placing your stuff away, putting your phone on charge and then changing.
He sat upright as you yelped, “Eddie! You scared me, again! Why are you sitting in the dark?” His face was drained of warmth, skin cold to the touch. “Was waiting for you, again.” You frowned at his words, “Baby, you know I’m late these days. Better for you to go to sleep than wait up.” He shook his head, burying his head into your stomach as his body relaxed. Your hands raked through his hair gently, “I think you should consider working from home.”
Your hands stopped in their tracks, working from home? The last time you worked from home was during lockdown, and you’d driven yourself half mad. “Why is that?” Eddie glanced up at you, “You’re barely home, Chris misses you, I miss you. Don’t you want to be with us?” You took a deep breath in before smiling, “Of course I do. I- I’ll see what I can do baby.”
His hands quickly dragged you into bed, “Knew you’d understand amor.” Eddie rested his head in the crook of your neck, his hands slowly making their way underneath your shirt.
“Sweetie, I’m tried.”
“I missed you.” You relented, letting him continue. It seemed to be all you were doing these days, bending backwards and over to please him, literally.
The first time you noticed his behaviour was also when you realised you needed space. Not that he’d give it to you. A new coworker, Harry, had invited not only yourself, but your friend Aleya and Jack out to lunch.
He was a nice guy, very eager to learn and never scared by a little constructive criticism. The only problem was probably his overbearing cologne, very pungent? Intense?
You’d also been driven to work that day, courtesy of your boyfriend. You were working shorter days now, completing about an hour or two of work at home now. It had taken some adjusting, after a few forgetful days and about a million texts from Carla with an impatient Chris at home waiting for you.
You spotted Eddies truck pull up as you wrapped up your conversation with the your three lunch goers, “And that’s me, I’ll see you guys on Monday. Thank you so much for lunch!” You reached out to Aleya for a side hug, the same for Jack and a normal hug for Harry. “Tell Eddie there’ll be a fire at my house later tonight, and he better bring Evan!” Jack joked as you waved him off.
Jack may or may not have a huge crush on Evan.
You hopped in, quickly chucking your purse and files into the back seat before kissing Eddie on the cheek. “Hi! How was Chris’s school?” Eddie shrugged his shoulders, “Fine.” Your eyebrows furrowed at his shortness, “Something wrong?” He turned onto the highway, knuckles tightly gripping the wheel, “You smell like him.”
“Like who? Harry?”
“That his name?”
You rolled your eyes, “No, it’s actually his father’s, middle name Jesus. Care for some wine Eddie?” Not once, had Eddie ever been physical. But raising his voice? Oh that was fair game.
“You think you’re funny huh? Having lunch with other guys and taking the piss outta me?”
“Nothing happened baby, it was lunch. He’s new and trying to fit in and I’m being nice. There’s nothing to worry about I swear.” The silence permeated in the truck, causing the hair on your arms to raise. You hated the silent treatment wholeheartedly.
“Whatever.”
His change in demeanour could flip like a switch, you always assumed it was him putting up a front. But when Eddie showed up the next day, flowers in hand and looking his sharpest, you were forced to reevaluate. “God I wish my boyfriend was that sweet.” Your project partner whispered as you sighed, “That’s Eddie.”
Even your boss wanted you to go with him, “Take the day off sweetie, you deserve it.” And with a pat on the back and a million swooning interns drooling over Eddie, you were sent on your way.
“I got these for you Y/n/n.” Your favourite flowers, arranged perfectly and smelling divine. Your hands wrapped around the bouquet, “Thank you Eddie, they’re perfect.” His smile caused your heart to race, he looked amazing. The Eddie with you that day was incredible.
His infectious laughter, perfect smile and the sweet nothings he whispered into your ear. That, was the Eddie Diaz you knew and loved. A gentleman, who had eyes for only you. Which is why you couldn’t help but wonder, what made him change? How was it possible to go from absolutely furious and unnecessarily jealous to an angel?
You didn’t want to know, and you didn’t want to stay around long enough to find out.
Maybe it was the date, or the fact that you felt as if he deserved an explanation face to face. Either way, if you’d known better, you would have made it away.
“Eddie, we have to talk.” The two of you were currently sitting on the couch, favourite show playing in the background. Eddie hummed along, a slight acknowledgment to your words. “It’s, about us.” Eddie turned the volume down, your sentence piquing his interest.
“What’s wrong?”
“I think, we should break up.”
And with six words, Eddies entire world came crashing down in front of him. What on earth were you talking about? “What did you say?” The smile on Eddies face was anything but sweet or reassuring, a bad attempt at keeping his composure. “You’ve been acting, odd, to say the least.” You stood from the couch as he followed in pursuit, all the way to the kitchen.
“I feel like, all that we’re doing lately is either fighting or sleeping. Every time I come home, you have something to say. Whether it’s about my later nights, about who I was with or what I’m doing on the phone. It’s like I have no privacy at all. I cannot keep a single thing to myself. And if I try to? You blow up at me. I mean last week for example, I tried my hardest to not argue with you by walking away. And all you did was follow me around the house, it drove me crazy. Showing up to my workspace when I tell you I can get more done without random lunch dates. I’m a grown adult but you treat me like a child. And if I stand up for myself I’m cheating. It makes no sense at all Eddie. And I tried to make it work, but I feel like you’re controlling me. I even reduced my hours, because you asked. I moved in even when I wasn’t ready, because you asked. I need a break.” You took a deep breath after your monologue, needing a second.
Turning towards Eddie, he stared straight at you. “I had no idea you felt that way baby. I’m so sorry, I never meant to do any of it. I love you so much, I can’t help but worry. After everything we’ve been through with Shannon,” And there it was, the guilt. It was blinding, clawing its way through you. Shannon. He’d already lost someone he loved, and Chris lost his mother. No wonder he was always to protective over you.
“Hey, I’m not leaving like Shannon okay? What happened was a tragic accident, and I promise nothing like that is going to happen again Eddie.” You immediately engulfed in a hug, his head resting against yours, “I don’t want to loose you, I don’t want Chris to loose you.” Eddie muttered repeatedly as you closed your eyes.
Chris walked into the room, thirsty, tired and curious, “Is something wrong?” You immediately detached yourself from Eddie, wiping away your tears, “Nothings wrong sweetie, did you need something?” He nodded before turning around and walking to his room, “We’ll talk later yeah?” Eddie whispered into your ear before moving ahead.
Sniffles came from underneath Christopher’s blanket, “You alright buddy?” Eddie asked, patting his hair down, “Water.” You watched as Eddie swiftly made his way to the kitchen whilst you sat down, “You need anything else?” Chris’s hand slowly lowered the blanket before smiling your way, “No thanks mum.”
And as quickly as he spoke, he turned over to sleep again. Your eyes were probably protruding out of your head, shock filling your senses. “Mum?” The word sounded foreign on your lips, but apparently comfortable enough on Chris’s.
“He called you mum.” Eddies voice was low, most likely as astounded as you based on the look on his face. You got up slowly, aware of the sleeping boy. You couldn’t help but smile, and kiss his forehead before making your way to Eddie. “I can’t believe it.” Eddies hand came up to wipe away the stray tears before pulling you in and kissing your forehead, “I can.”
“You’re apart of this family baby, always have been.” His words seeped in as he guided you to your bed, whilst you were stuck on autopilot. Chris viewed you as a parent to him, that’s how common you were in his life now, a constant for him to fall back on. He loved you, almost as much as you loved him. Your words weren’t forgotten just swirling in your head, how the hell could you ask for a break now? With this new huge responsibility?
Eddie knew, of course he knew. He was the one encouraging Chris to call you by your new name. Because if there’s one thing Eddie knew he needed, besides Chris?
It’s you, and he’d do anything to make you stay.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Are you going to work now?" (Y/n) glanced her eyes up from her brother to look at the kitchen clock.
All of Chris's activities and plans were on the calendar stuck to the fridge, but (Y/n) thought it would be a good idea for Eddie to add his shifts on there too. She couldn't keep track of what days he was at work and when he was home and she didn't know how Eddie always managed to remember either.
"In about ten minutes, yeah."
It would just be (Y/n) and Chris then. Chris had been more than elated when they told him (Y/n) was going to live with them for a while. And when he learned that she would be helping to look after him and giving Carla a break, he had been over the moon.
He kept (Y/n) busy. He occupied her days and kept her mind from wandering back to Evan. He was all (Y/n) kept thinking about.
She didn't know what she was going to do. She had stopped herself from heading back to Chrissy's or heading back to Texas in the middle of the night. As much as (Y/n) wanted to, she knew she couldn't because of Chris. She told him she was staying and if she left she would break his heart. And she couldn't panic Eddie like that either.
She needed to try and make her fresh start here and hope that she could work things out with Evan and keep him at bay. But (Y/n) wasn't so sure she was going to be able to do that.
(Y/n) nodded and she smiled when she felt Eddie's hand on her shoulder as he walked behind her to get to the fridge.
His eyes followed her as she moved to the calander pinned to the wall. The one on the fridge was Chris's for all his activities and trips out, but the Fire Station calander on the wall was for any generic things happening. Or anything Eddie had planned that he needed to remember.
(Y/n) could feel her brother's eyes burning into her as he found a drink from the fridge and moved to stand behind her. He looked over her shoulder to see what she was adding to the calander. (Y/n) had already gotten her start date for the call centre which happened to be next week. She wouldn't be working there for too long before she had to take maternity leave- if she even lasted in LA that long with Evan now being here. But it was something to get her out and get her life back in order.
"Do you need me to take you to that?" Eddie spoke softly when he realised what she had added to the calander.
She had a scan in a few days.
"No, I'll be fine, plus it might take a while, it's my first one."
"You haven't had one yet?" Eddie folded his arms over his chest and leaned back against the counter while (Y/n) turned around to face him. Her hands fiddled together in front of her chest while she kept her eyes cast downwards.
"He tracked my phone… if he saw me going to the maternity unit he'd figure it out pretty quick."
(Y/n) tried her best to smile, but she could feel tears burning in the corners of her eyes already. Everything she had done to get herself away from Evan had been for nothing. All the risks and precautions she took had led her here, and Evan had already beaten her to the punch.
When she thought she was pregnant, (Y/n) took a home test, then another just to confirm it. But she couldn't make an appointment for the hospital when she knew Evan had been checking her phone and following her. If he saw her going to the maternity unit in the hospital, he would know why and then he would have found out she was pregnant.
(Y/n) took the risk of praying nothing was wrong with her baby and when she started to show, she took it as a good sign. She was nearly twenty weeks now and this would be her first scan. Her first appointment so they would need all her details, her weight and they would have to check the baby and the baby's size and weight to make sure they were growing okay.
She didn't want to drag Eddie along and make him wait through that, and she didn't need a lift either. She would be fine doing this alone. If Evan didn't prove to get in the way.
"Has he tried to get hold of you yet?"
"No." She forced a smile and shook her head.
What would be the point in worrying Eddie? How would (Y/n) even go about telling him it was his best friend that was the problem? She couldn't tell him Evan was her ex, her stalker and the father of her child.
But (Y/n) didn't know how long she could keep this from Eddie. How could she keep seeing Evan everywhere she turned and not be worried? How could she be around Evan and Eddie in a group setting and not let on why she didn't want to be around him?
What happened when she had the baby?
(Y/n) knew Evan, she knew him better than Eddie thought he did. She knew Evan wasn't going to let her keep him out of their child's life. He believed in fate and he thought this was a sign. (Y/n) knew Evan wanted what everyone else had, too.
He was jealous of the family Bobby and Hen had. He was jealous of the relationship Chimney had with his sister. She could see he was jealous that Eddie had Chris whereas who did Evan have, apart from (Y/n)? And he was starting to lose her. He wouldn't let her take this child from him.
If he hadn't of known about the baby, (Y/n) wouldn't have felt guilty. What he didn't know wouldn't hurt him. Until he found out when he spoke to Eddie, and that would have put him on the war path. But now he knew, (Y/n) wasn't going to be able to keep him out of her or her child's life.
She would forever be tied to Evan until the day she died.
"You okay?"
A shiver tore down her spine when Eddie brought her out of her depressing thoughts, but she managed another nod. "Just thinking-" (Y/n) cut herself off when they both heard the doorbell.
Her eyes darted between Eddie and the kitchen doorway when she saw Chris hurry past to go and open the door.
"Expecting someone?"
A grin broke out on Eddie's face and he glanced at the fridge calander just to make sure he was on the right track. "Chris is heading out to the zoo. He usually goes every week."
"Uncle Buck!"
Those two words sent adrenaline tumbling through (Y/n)'s stomach and she could feel bile creeping up the back of her throat. It was Evan. He was here to take Chris out. Why was he taking him out? Why was he here? Why was (Y/n) still here? Why hadn't she gone out for a walk or to the shop or somewhere so she didn't have to see him?
Since seeing him at the station four days ago, (Y/n) had been waiting in agony. She expected Evan to call or text or come by the house and see her. But he didn't. He hadn't turned up and she hadn't slept for fear that he would come by. She knew they needed to talk. They had to sort this mess out and decide what they were doing, but (Y/n) didn't want to see him and face him yet.
This was her family, not Evan's. He couldn't bustle his way in and take everything from her.
"Evan's taking him out?" Her voice came out quiet and meek and she saw the way Eddie's lips quirked.
"No one calls him that, you know. We call him Buck, and yeah, Chris loves his one to one time with him. They've got the zoo mapped out and memorised by now." Eddie waved his hand for (Y/n) to follow as he left the kitchen to go and find Evan.
She didn't want to follow. She wanted to run back to her room and hide away like a frightened child or go to the bathroom and pretend to be sick. But that would only make Eddie worry and speculate something was wrong and she couldn't do that to him.
Her legs felt like they had turned to jelly when she slowly walked out into the hall and clung to the wall to be as far back as possible. Her arms bound around her chest, resting over her bump to try and keep it from sight. When she saw Evan at the station, all he could do was stare at her stomach. He didn't seem to truly believe she was pregnant. She didn't want him staring at her today.
She watched Chris attach himself to Evan like glue and it made her heart melt. Why did things have to go so wrong between them? Why did he have to be so pent up and anxious and controlling that he pushed (Y/n) away?
If things had been different between them, this would have been a dream. Falling for someone Chris loved and who got along great with her big brother. Someone who all her friends and family admired and loved and thought of as loving and endearing.
But that was already how everyone saw Evan. No one saw the pent up, controlling, anxious side of him like (Y/n) had. The side of him that frightened her.
"Buck, you remember (Y/n)." Eddie glanced over his shoulder and looked at (Y/n) who put on her best fake smile to make sure Eddie didn't know she felt so uncomfortable right now.
"Oh, yeah. Are you feeling better now?"
"Hm, much better, thank you."
"We're heading to the zoo, you're welcome to come along. I can show you round, saves you being cooped up here all alone." Evan stuffed one hand in his pocket while he looped his other arm around Chris's shoulders and reeled him into his side.
He saw the way (Y/n) rolled her lips together and the panic that burned in her eyes and it made his stomach flip. Why was she staring at him like that? Why couldn't she look at him like she did the time he first kissed her? Evan wanted her to look at him with that pure, unfiltered love in her eyes. The look that made him fall to his knees and pray to do anything she asked him to.
"Yeah, you can come! Please, please come with us?" Chris started to bounce up and down and clap until (Y/n) wanted to cry.
She looked across at Eddie as if he would give her some sort of magical excuse, but she knew he wouldn't. She knew by Eddie's smile that he thought it was a good idea. He wanted (Y/n) to make friends here and get along with his work family. And he would be happy for (Y/n) to get out of the house, he trusted evan to look after her and Chris. He trusted Evan with his life.
"You won't find a better guide than Buck." Eddie clapped Evan on the shoulder and smiled when Chris squealed as (Y/n) nodded meekly.
"Sure." She hadn't taken Chris out in so long and she wanted to spend as much time with him as she could to make up for lost time.
If Evan happened to be along with them, it was just a small bump in the road. Chris would be with them so Evan couldn't say or do anything unless he wanted to risk Chris hearing and finding out.
Turning around, (Y/n) backtracked into the kitchen to grab her phone and she took a few seconds to catch her breath. She could do this. She could be around Evan for one afternoon, and they wouldn't be alone. God knows she had spent enough time with him over the last few months when he had been out of LA and off work.
Spending time with Evan wasn't the issue, it was the behaviours that occurred when they were apart. How he somehow always knew where she was going and where she was when she wasn't with him. How he was so quick to want her to move in with him and be around him, not anyone else. The way he got riled if he thought she was somehow being distant with him or if he thought she was about to walk out the door and never come back. That had only happened once and that was only after (Y/n) tried to break up with him.
(Y/n) loved spending time with Evan, and a big part of her had fallen desperately in love with him. But she wasn't sure she could cope with the manic side of him and the control that came from his anxieties.
"You ready?"
Her heart thundered against her ribs when his voice broke her out of her thoughts.
She spun round to find Evan stood less than an inch away from her with that charming grin spread across his lips. Every expression he had was somehow magnetic, whether he was smiling so sweetly at her or looking at her with broken eyes that (Y/n) just wanted to piece back together.
It was dangerous how easily Evan could draw her in without having to do anything at all.
She nodded but her chest leaned back when Evan pushed forward and planted his hands down on the counter either side of her hips. Caging her in between him and the sink.
"You look lovely," His voice was low and hollow enough that neither Eddie nor Chris would be able to hear out in the hall. And (Y/n) thought it only polite to smile, he was only giving her a compliment, after all.
She wanted to move, she wanted to push past his arm and tell him they needed to go, but she felt rooted to the spot. It felt too dangerous to move past his arm or try and push against him. Any connection to him no matter how she touched him, might spur him to kiss her like he did the other day. He had felt betrayed by her when he saw her again but he kissed her anyway, (Y/n) couldn't quite figure him out.
"Thank you," She murmured softly but just as she felt some control come back and went to take a step to the side, she stopped.
Evan let go of the counter and dragged his fingertips over her stomach.
She wasn't wearing a hoodie or baggy clothes anymore. (Y/n) didn't have to try and hide her appearance because Eddie knew and they had told Chris who was ecstatic he was soon going to have a cousin. She didn't have to hide her pregnancy from anyone here and Evan already knew. And with the LA heat, (Y/n) had chosen a thin cotton shirt and some leggings which revealed her bump.
Her hands curled around the counter behind her, digging the sharp edge into her palms as she waited to see what Evan was going to do. (Y/n) knew she should be pushing him away, but she didn't know how anymore. What would be the point?
She watched him slip his hand beneath her shirt and the way he smiled when he pressed his palm against her abdomen almost made (Y/n) feel bad for trying to hide this from him. But she had to remind herself that she had her reasons; she wasn't doing any of this to be cruel to him.
His thumb traced up and down her skin for a few moments and (Y/n) found herself silently watching him. Until he ducked down and attached his lips to the side of her neck.
"Evan, if Chris walks in-"
"Then I'll stop. Come on, your his aunt and he calls me his uncle, you think he won't be happy if he caught us?"
That didn't even deserve an answer. He was baiting her to start an argument, to distract her from what he was doing so he could carry on.
And something inside (Y/n) told her if Chris caught them, he would be bubbling with excitement. He thought the world of Evan, he wanted him to be his real uncle and (Y/n) was by far his favourite relative and the one he was closest to out of everyone. If they were together Chris would be overjoyed.
A shudder crawled along (Y/n)'s spine when Evan sank his teeth down into her neck and she found the strength to grab his shoulders and try to push him back. She couldn't risk making a sound in case Eddie heard. If Eddie didn't put two and two together right away, he would still be very unhappy and suspicious that his friend was trying to pull a move on his sister. And if Chris saw he would blab to Eddie right away.
(Y/n) bit her lip to smother the gasp she felt crawling up her throat when Evan swiftly darted his hand down into her leggings.
All her effort went into her hands and she pushed him far enough back to worm away from his touch and add some distance between them. At least with Chris around when they went out, Evan wouldn't try anything. Probably. Hopefully.
"Let's go, Chris doesn't like waiting." (Y/n) put her phone in her bag and slung it on her shoulder but she held her breath again when Evan reached out for her hips.
She shimmied her arms in front of her and tried to push him back but it was futile. Defeat showed in her eyes and she let him reel her in close enough so he could take her by surprise and kiss her. It was just a small kiss, a fleeting touch, barely there before he let go and waited for her to walk in front of him.
"Off we go, sweetheart."
She wished he wouldn't call her that. He knew petnames always made her knees weak and coming from his lips, with that voice, only made (Y/n) want to give in when she knew she shouldn't. She couldn't.
She walked quickly to keep some distance between them just in case Evan tried to grab her again or walk close enough to her that one of the boys noticed.
As he walked out the kitchen, Evan turned to the left and darted his eyes along the calander on the wall. And he smiled.
***
A gasp tumbled past (Y/n)'s lips and she stumbled back a few steps when she opened the front door.
All the blood drained down to her feet and she felt her body slumping against the door when she stared up at Evan. What was he doing here? Why was he back again? Chris was at school and Eddie was at work, surely Evan knew both of those things. Did that mean he was here to see her specifically? Was he here to torment her because she was home alone, and there was no risk of anyone catching him here?
"Hi sweetheart."
"Evan, I- I'm just on my way out." She tried to hold herself up again and push away from the door, but moving wasn't much of an option with Evan on the doorstep. His tall, broad frame took up most of the space so (Y/n) would have to squeeze to get past him.
She stepped onto the porch with him until their chests were almost touching and quickly closed the front door behind her. (Y/n) didn't want any reason for Evan to step inside and delay her or be around him in privacy where he could try something.
"I know, I thought I could take you."
"No thanks." Her reply was instant and she darted her eyes down to the floor and pressed her lips tightly together.
Her shoulder bumped into Evan's arm as she passed him, aiming to walk down the path and leave. She didn't want Evan's help or assistance, she didn't call him and ask him to take her anywhere. (Y/n) was perfectly fine getting the bus where she would be surrounded by people and much safer than being left on her own with Evan.
At least four days ago when they went to the zoo, Chris had been there with them. Evan had stayed respectful. Every now and then he had reached out for her hand or moved his hand to the small of her back, and (Y/n) almost forgot that they were a somewhat separated couple with a lot of issues.
But Chris was at school now and Eddie wasn't here. (Y/n) hadn't been alone with Evan since before he found out about the baby.
She didn't get far down the path before Evan's hand curled around her upper arm and he pulled her until her back tumbled into his chest. And he leaned down, hovering his lips dangerously close to her ear as he grinned against her skin.
"I'd like to come to your appointment, sweetheart. This is my baby too." The tender kiss Evan placed behind (Y/n)'s ear made her heart clench and beat uncomfortably in her chest. And he made adrenaline fuel through her stomach and liven up the baby.
"How did you know about that?" Her head tilted to the right and she looked up at Evan with panic burning in her eyes.
He wasn't going to let her go alone today. He knew she was going for her scan, that was why he was here.
"You put it on the calander."
Her shoulders slumped down as she felt like a balloon starting to deflate. She only put that on the calander so she remembered and Eddie would know where she was going. (Y/n) didn't write that so that Evan could sneak a peek when he came over. She wanted to do this alone, like she had been doing since she found out she was pregnant.
Evan wasn't supposed to be involved because he was never going to get her go now. But he knew. He knew about the baby and regardless of whether or not he attended her appointments with her, Evan wasn't going to go away. They were going to have to work through this some way or another.
"Fine." She tore her arm from his grip and held her chin up as she passed him and walked over to his jeep.
If he wanted to give her a ride and save her the trouble of catching the bus, (Y/n) would let him. She couldn't avoid Evan and if she said no, he was only going to go into one of his manic modes. It was better to tame the beast than to rile him up.
"So, how far along are you, about five months, right?"
(Y/n) let her eyes dance across Evan's frame when he climbed in the jeep and started to drive. He always looked natural and relaxed when he drove. (Y/n) hadn't seen him driving a lot when they had been together, he had still been recovering from his surgeries. But the few times he did drive her, he looked like it was something that calmed him and helped him focus.
He had one elbow resting on the door with his fingers darting across his lips and chin, and his other hand was slowly turning the wheel, flexing his bicep.
"Yeah, twenty weeks." She smoothed her hand up and down her stomach and looked out the window so Evan wouldn't catch her staring. "Evan, what's your plan here? What do you think Eddie will say if he knows you're taking me? He'll find it strange, unless you want to tell him you're the father."
She didn't like the unease that washed over Evan's face, but when he turned his head to the left to look over at her, his eyes were soft like melting sweets.
"I don't care what he thinks or if you tell him. He'll find out sooner or later, I told you before, this is my baby too. Don't think I'm gonna stand back and let you do any of this without me."
Evan wasn't here to wind Eddie up or to taunt him or mess around with (Y/n). He was here because he loved her and this was their child. She wasn't going to these appointments and hiding any aspect of this pregnancy from Evan anymore.
And he knew they would have to tell Eddie soon because once the baby was born, Evan was getting involved no matter what (Y/n) said or what she tried to tell people. He had waited years to find someone he had a connection with and to settle down and have a family. That time was now and this was his child, he was going to be in his child's life no matter what.
(Y/n) could feel tears bubbling up in her eyes but she did her best to push them aside and put on a brave face. She didn't have to think this through right now. She didn't have to argue with Evan or try and sort this sticky, tangled mess. All she had to do right now was focus on the baby and get through this appointment.
Her teeth sank down deeply into her lower lip when they got out the jeep and headed inside. She felt Evan close at her side and when his palm pressed against her lower back, (Y/n) didn't have the nerve or the energy to shake him off. She stayed leaning against his arm as she gave the receptionist her name and sat down.
"I- I haven't done this before." She wasn't sure why she was telling him. He was going to find out anyway when they went through all the questions and gave all (Y/n)'s details to the midwife in a few minutes.
But she was nervous.
To try and keep this a secret and move down to LA, (Y/n) hadn't told her doctor back home. She hadn't gone to a single anitnatal appointment so Chrissy or her family and especially so Evan wouldn't find out.
What if she had left it too late? What if there was a complication with the baby or they weren't okay? What if something came up and the baby wasn't going to be alright or if (Y/n) needed to go to hospital for something?
It all seemed pointless now. Evan had found out. Everything had been secret and hidden and done for nothing.
"You haven't had an appointment yet?" Evan leaned his elbows on his knees and clasped his hands together between his thighs, but he turned his head to the left to look at her. Concern pooled in his eyes and the look he gave her made (Y/n) hold her breath deep in her lungs.
When she shook her head, Evan reached across and took her hand. The gesture was small, simple, sweet. And it made her heart add in five extra beats as she stared at him in silence.
"You'll be fine."
(Y/n) looked down at their hands and couldn't stop herself from squeezing his hand.
"(Y/n) Diaz?"
She didn't question it when Evan got up and walked along with her. The whole reason he was here was to see the scan for himself and see that the baby was okay and get a glimpse of them. Evan wasn't likely to wait out here and let (Y/n) go in alone.
Their hands stayed interlocked as they followed the midwife into the room and sat down in front of the desk.
"It says this is your first appointment, you haven't had any prenatal care yet?" Her smile was kind and made (Y/n) relax, she was expecting to be told off for not seeing a doctor yet. God knows if they weren't in public Evan probably would have scolded her for it too.
She shook her head and tried to smile. "Not yet, I've just moved here."
"That's okay. Let's pop you on the scales and get you examined, and perhaps dad over here can fill in a few details for me."
(Y/n) darted her eyes across to Evan but he was already smiling and taking the clipboard from the midwife. Evan knew her like the back of his hand. Despite not being together for very long, Evan knew more about (Y/n) than her friends did and she couldn't dispute that he was the baby's father. That was why he was here. She may as well let him help and be useful if he was here.
She followed the nurse over near the door and hopped up on the scales, feeling herself relax a little more when the midwife nodded and murmured a quiet "Good." Clearly she was in the right weight zone.
"Alright, lift up your shirt for me please."
She rolled her shirt up over her bump but her eyes wandered back over towards Evan. His eyes were already on her. He didn't even hide the way he looked her up and down as the midwife measured and examined her stomach and the look in Evan's eyes made her chest tighten and her stomach clench.
It was those kind of looks that got them in this position in the first place. Those looks were the ones that made (Y/n) melt and made her want to get closer and closer to Evan. But it was his other side that pushed her away.
"Shall we take a look at baby?"
It was something of a comfort when Evan put the clipboard down on the desk and followed her over to the exam bed. She felt in two minds about having him here. Evan being here was comforting, (Y/n) didn't have to do this alone like she had been trying to build herself up to do. But being here just cemented the fact that (Y/n) wasn't going to part from Evan, ever.
This baby was going to be their bond, it would tie them together until the day they died. She would always have a connection to Evan and (Y/n) couldn't fight him off.
She couldn't tell him to stay away, she would never be able to run from him and take his child away and (Y/n) wouldn't have the heart to keep Evan from their child if he was going to be this persistent.
Wouldn't it be easier to try and make something of this fractured relationship, for all their sakes? It would be easier to co-parent if they were together. (Y/n) wouldn't have to rely on Eddie or think she had to do this alone. Her baby would have two loving parents and (Y/n) wanted her baby to have a loving home too.
But would Evan's manic side increase if they had a baby together? Would he become overly anxious about (Y/n) going out without him or taking the baby out? Could she even leave the house without telling him if she had a baby? Would his protective, anxious side smother her and this kid?
Every possible scenario fluttered through (Y/n)'s mind as she sat on the bed and looked over at the monitor. She barely felt the cold gel on her stomach but she could feel her anxiety spiking when the sonogram started to move across her abdomen and press down.
Did she really wait too long for this appointment? Had it caused irreparable damage?
She felt Evan's hand on her arm when they heard the heartbeat. His other arm leant on the bed just above her head but his eyes were magnetised on the screen.
"Baby looks a healthy size, placenta is all fine and in place, you have quite a bit of amniotic fluid though."
"Is that bad?"
"Just something to keep an eye on, it could make baby on the small side, but nothing to worry about right now. Would you like to know the gender?"
"Yes please." (Y/n) spoke before she could think better of it.
Chris had been asking if she was having a boy or girl, he was desperate to find out and Eddie had to keep bribing him not to tell his grandparents when he spoke to them on the phone. And (Y/n) wanted to know so this felt more real and she could start thinking and planning ahead. She knew Eddie was curious too.
But knowing might make it more real for Evan, and cement him in (Y/n)'s life. But she had said yes now and her curiosity was overpowered her sensibility.
"You're having a girl."
All (Y/n) could do was stare at the screen, even when it froze so the midwife could print off some copies. She was having a girl. They were going to have a daughter. Evan was going to be head over heels in love with this little girl, and (Y/n) wouldn't be able to keep him away.
She barely felt Evan kissing her temple and she couldn't focus or understand whatever the midwife was telling them. When she climbed off the bed, she curled her hand around Evan's wrist and leaned her head on his shoulder to stop the static in her head.
She let Evan answer most of the questions and tried to smile and nod through them after that. But (Y/n) felt like she was in a trance. She was happy. She was going to have a daughter. Chris and Eddie were going to be happy. Evan was over the moon.
What was she going to do now?
What was she going to tell Eddie when the baby was born and Evan wouldn't stop coming round? What would she say if Eddie caught Evan being far too close and intimate with her?
Oh God, was Evan going to insist on being at the birth?
(Y/n) knew Evan better than she cared to admit, better than Eddie thought he did. She knew he wasn't going to miss the birth of his daughter, he would want to be there and if (Y/n) didn't let him or didn't tell him, he would go on a rampage. How would they explain it to Eddie without giving away everything and causing a fight?
The ride home was quiet, but it was peaceful. It almost felt like their first date, trying to think of what to say and how to act, but feeling so comfortable and at peace with each other.
"Thank you, for taking me." (Y/n) broke the silence at last just as Evan pulled up on the drive. She would admit it had been easier than taking the bus and he had been very helpful. If all their moments together could be as loving and easy as this, (Y/n) would make a second go of this relationship, no questions asked.
"You're welcome."
(Y/n) climbed out the jeep but she felt her heart thudding in her chest when Evan got out too.
If she asked him inside, he might not leave. Nobody was home and (Y/n) didn't know what time Eddie was due home from work. If he came home and found Evan here he might be suspicious. If Evan went with her to collect Chris, then Chris would want him to stay over for tea and (Y/n) would have to be around him for the rest of the day.
In his good spirits, Evan might try something. He might try and touch her or kiss her or make a risky move in front of the boys.
When she unlocked the door, (Y/n) tried her best to keep her hands from shaking as she turned to face him. She could feel how close he was standing behind her like a shadow, looming over her and looking down at her with that bright smile that always shocked her heart.
"Evan-"
He didn't give her chance to turn him away. His hands found her hips and his lips crashed down on hers like the waves lapping at the sand. His lips found hers with a fierce, burning intensity that stole her breath and knocked her on her back foot sending her into the door.
With the door ajar, Evan nudged (Y/n) backwards until she was walking inside and he could kick the door shut with the heel of his boot.
Her hands found his shoulders to keep herself stable but it only gave Evan the momentum he wanted to push her backwards and turn her to the side. Until her back hit the wall next to the shoe rack and she had Evan pressed against her front like they had been glued together.
He leaned his chest down into hers, sandwiching her against him and the wall and she could feel his lips curving into a grin when his abdomen merged into her curved stomach.
"Evan," The way she groaned his name made his fingers clutch her hips like they were his lifeline and he pressed down on her until she had to concentrate on taking each breath against his lips. Pins and needles flooded down (Y/n)'s arms towards her fingertips when Evan dug his hand beneath her leggings and held her bum while his other hand curved around the side of her neck.
She dug her nails into his shoulder and reached down for his wrist, trying in vain to remove his hand from her leggings but she couldn't make him budge.
"You can't do this," She gasped desperately against his lips, pushing his shoulders but he felt like he was made of stone, far too heavy for her to push back no matter how hard she tried.
He couldn't start this. He couldn't kiss her and make her weak and try to worm his way back into her life. She left for a reason and Evan knew exactly what that reason was. This baby didn't change the fact that Evan frightened her and he got controlling and manic and out of control and dangerous.
It didn't matter how badly (Y/n) missed being with Evan or how his touch made her melt and his kisses made her feel like she was on top of the world. Every day wasn't going to be like this with Evan and that was the point. She didn't know how he would change as the days went on and his moods changed and turned sour.
"Haven't you missed me, baby girl?"
"Evan… no, t-this isn't fair-"
"Why? You let that midwife believe I'm your partner, and I am, aren't I? And that's our girl in there." He panted each word against her lips, barely parting so (Y/n) could feel each way his lips moved against hers and she swallowed each word, gulping for the air he'd stolen.
Her eyes darted down to stare at his collar bone instead of his eyes as he let go of her neck and slid his hand down beneath her shirt to hold her stomach.
She felt relieved for all of two seconds when Evan finally pulled back and let her breathe deeply and have an inch of space. But it didn't last long. He pulled his hand out from her leggings only to scrunch up the hem of her shirt and rip it up over her head and tug it off her arms before she could even tell him no or try and stop him.
Her heart jumped up into her throat when he moved the top of her leggings, but he only rolled the hem down a little. (Y/n)'s eyes followed him anxiously when he crouched down in front of her, moving his hands across her hips to hold her bum again. But when he pressed his lips and nose against her stomach, she felt like she was falling through the air, unsure when or where she was about to land.
"You're both my girls, and you know I love you. I'll do anything for you, because you're both mine."
His words sounded so sweet, but the way he spoke made (Y/n) want to cry because she could see the debate in his mind. She could see the anxiety taking over and getting back in control. He wasn't asking or telling her to be his partner. He was telling her she was his. Indefinitely. Absolutely. Forever. She was his and now she was having his child, she was always going to be his in some form or another.
The way he tenderly kissed across her abdomen made (Y/n) bite her lip and she moved her hands to his shoulders because she didn't know where else to put them. But she didn't have the energy to push him away.
He was tearing her mind in two, he was tearing her heart from her chest and holding it so nobody else could ever have it. He was kissing her stomach and silently telling her that their daughter was never going to be taken away from him. And neither was (Y/n).
Evan kissed his way up her stomach, between and across her cleavage and up her neck until he could taste her lips and bite down on her bottom lip to make her gasp.
"I want you."
Of course he did. He wanted her in every sense of the word, especially in the dominating sense that meant (Y/n) would forever be his, nobody else's.
His hands raked down to her thighs and in one swift motion, he lifted her up until she had to hook her legs around his hips to secure herself and make sure he didn't drop her. She gripped his shoulders tighter and gasped when he attached his lips to the side of her neck while he began walking down the hall.
"No, but…"
But what? He knew Eddie was on the afternoon shift. He knew Chris didn't have to be picked up for another two hours. Evan knew no one would be calling round and no one else would be home. There was no excuse (Y/n) could give that would make him put her down. And saying no to Evan was never an option.
Not when he kissed her the way he did and held her like she was the most precious thing in the world. The only thing he wanted, the only thing he needed.
Her hands let go of his shoulders so she could wind her arms around his neck and hold on tighter to stop herself from passing out or panicking. And when Evan stole her lips again, she let him. She let him take her air and kiss her like the world depended on it and dart his tongue past her lips. She let him carry her down the hall and into her room, kicking the door shut behind him.
She had to. He wasn't going to let her go. Ever.

Gif not mine, credits to the owner!
He was cursed, indefinitely.
Getting rescheduled, running out of gas, random remodels galore. It seems as if someone was against him finally making his donation. But the waiting wasn’t the worst part, the no sex rule was major. Why on Earth had he stuck with it? Evan assumed it wouldn’t be too difficult, which it wasn’t.
Until he met you.
It was the fourth day of waiting and he’d changed his usual coffee place ever since they randomly only served skim milk. And he was happy to make the change, since his new place was actually three minutes closer as well as better. Ever since he saw you, he’d found himself ordering more than needed, adding a muffin or two, or ordering for the crew.
Anything that let him stare at you for a little while longer. You were always on time, every morning you showed up, ordered the same thing with the occasional additional treat. A smile on your face and always equipped with a kind compliment.
But Buck surprisingly couldn’t find it in himself to approach you. Whether he was too scared of embarrassing himself or he just liked staring. He found himself second guessing his actions at every turn. It wasn’t until you came in minus a smile that he worked up the courage to interact with you.
You were currently sitting outside, gazing at the oncoming traffic and people going about their day. The cup in your hands taking the brunt end of your restlessness as you tapped your fingers. The hand waving in your face brought you back, “Oh, I’m so sorry. Did you need something?” The man in front of you grinned, “Uh no, not really. I just- well you were…” He pointed out to the traffic before pointing at you again.
“Would you like to sit? Maybe it’d help you get your words together.” You joked as he laughed before pulling his respective chair, “Thanks, I’m Evan. But people call me Buck, whatever works for you.” You reached your hand out, “Y/n, nice to meet you Evan.”
Evan smiled before revealing the brown bag, “I uhm, well you looked like you were a bit down, so I ordered you a pastry. Thought it’d cheer you up.” Your regular pastry sat inside the bag, waiting for you to eat it, “Oh! You really didn’t have to, that’s so nice of you.” He waved his hand, brushing off your words, “It’s nothing really, just enjoy it.” You wanted to ask how he knew, but figured there was no point in it.
And the two of you talked for almost an hour afterwards, slowly getting to know each other better. The pair of you were quick friends to your surprise. And your relationship only grew afterwards, regularly catching up in the mornings over coffee. Which then turned to lunch together during his off day, and then dinner.
You knew it was quick, but you couldn’t help yourself, you really did like Evan. It was unbelievably easy to talk to him, he was such a warm person. And Evan sure as hell liked you. Every day he found it easier to get out of bed, overly eager to get to see your face and hear your voice. God, he could listen to you for hours.
He’d never really clicked so easily with someone, and he was grateful for it. It’d been a while since Taylor, it was refreshing to talk to someone and not just for a night. He found himself checking his phone every few minutes, hoping for a reply from you.
And everyone else noticed.
“What’s got you so happy Buckley?” Chimney asked from the kitchen, pouring a cup of coffee. Hen glanced over to find Buck smiling down at his phone, “Nothing, just looking at photos.” Hen circled back to him, sitting down across from him as she surveyed his body language. You and Evan had been out last night at a movie, and you’d both posed in the cardboard cutouts.
The photo he was looking at had you as a bodybuilder and him in a dress he looked “absolutely stunning in”, according to you.
“It’s like your face is permanently smiling. Please tell me it’s not frozen.” She poked his cheek before he swatted it away, “Can I not just be happy?” Chimney shrugged before settling down next to Hen, “You can be happy, as long as you tell us what, or who, has you feeling this way.” Bobby came towards the trio, Eddie in tow, “Who’s feeling what?” Hen chuckled, “Seems we’ve got a smitten Buckley in the house. We’re trying to figure out who’s making him happy.”
Buck rolled his eyes before getting up, “It’s really not that big of a deal guys, cmon.” Bobby shook his head, “Yes it is, someone’s in love.” The group laughed as Evan shook his head, “Not you too, I thought you were sensible.” He shrugged his shoulders, “I am extremely sensible, and curious. What’s their name?”
“Her names Y/n, and that’s all you get to know for now. Damn vultures.”
“Don’t make me circle back for you Buckley!” Hen shouted out as Evan made his way down, what he didn’t expect was for you to be waiting for him. “Y/n?” You turned swiftly to meet his eye, “Hey Buck, you called me?” His eyebrows furrowed, “It must’ve been an accident, I’m sorry. But you didn’t have to come here.”
He was thoroughly impressed, did a phone call from him warrant a visit? Not that he was complaining. You looked even more gorgeous than usual, and you smelled—
“Yeah but we were supposed to meet for lunch, and you didn’t reply, I only got a call.” His eyes widened in realisation, he’d forgotten your date. Was it a date? Did you think it was a date? Is that why you were wearing a dress? You said you usually only wear them for special occasions or people. Was he a special person?
“I’m so so sorry, it must’ve slipped my mind. We just came back from a run. We can go now for sure.” Your smile spread as he spoke, “Is something funny? Please tell me I don’t have sauce on my face.” Your laughter filled the air, did you know that your eyes creased when you giggled? Your nose also scrunched, god you were cute.
His eyes trailed up to the balcony, where his entire team stood staring before straightening up, “Mhm, the top of the trucks are so pretty. Probably shiny too.” The random topics of conversation were more than enough to alert Evan to the eavesdropping taking place. “Guess you might as well meet those idiots.” You smiled, “Lead the way Firefighter Buckley.”
“Oh! You are brilliant!” Chimney exclaimed as the rest of the group laughed uncontrollably. Buck sat with his arms crossed, “It’s not even that funny!” You couldn’t help but pat his bicep, “Of course you don’t think it is!” You leaned into him as you giggled, practically pushing your chest into his arm.
Don’t look, don’t look, don’t look.
Evan’s eyes were staring right into Eddies soul, as Eddies laughter died down, “You okay?” He mouthed as the man across him from blinked rapidly before nodding. Eddies eyes trailed to you, and your low cut dress before returning to Buck. Oh, oh! Eddie smiled, “That’s a really lovely dress Y/n/n.” Evan’s eyes narrowed, wishing a few horrible accidents upon Eddie.
Murmurs of agreement broke out from everyone else, “It really is, what do you think Buck?” Evan’s lips drew into a tight line, “Oh, yeah. Definitely, they look good in it. I mean— you look amazing. Really good today. Not that you don’t usually, you always look so good. And smell! Not that I smell you, you smell. Good! You smell good.”
You couldn’t help but laugh as he stumbled his way through his monologue, “Good to know Buck, good to know.” You promptly turned to Bobby, “Yknow Evan never shuts up about your cooking, would I ever be so lucky to experience it for myself?”
Buck zoned out of the current conversation, replaying his epic fail in his head.The tightening of his pants had him shifting around uncomfortably, and Eddies grin aimed his way was getting to him.
He was going to kill Eddie.
Dinner that night was probably amongst one of the best dates he’d ever had. And he had asked you before you went out whether or not it was a date, repeatedly. But it was also a test of strength. You’d decided to wear a gorgeous dress, designed to test his patience.
And as if that wasn’t enough, he’d made the stupid mistake of inviting you back to his apartment.
Which, A) Gave the impression that something was going to happen.
B) Maybe made you think that he thought you were the type of girl to put out easily.
And Evan never wanted you to think that.
With a few glasses of wine, sweet music and amazing company you were bound to end up on his bed. Evan’s hands were soft yet controlling, lifting you up onto his lap to straddle him. “God you’re gorgeous.” He murmured into your neck as you giggled, “Is that so?” He smiled up at you as your arms locked around his neck, “Definitely.”
“Then we should settle in for the night, no?”
Evan wanted to curse his own mind for reminding him, maybe he could make the deposit another time, right? He knew it was wrong to think this way, but how could he stop himself from going all the way with you on top of him? “Dammit, I am so sorry. But I can’t.” Your swiftly lifted yourself off his lap, settling down next to him.
“Hey that’s fine, you’re not being forced into anything Buck.” Evan groaned as he leaned in to capture your lips again, “You are so annoyingly understanding. And I love that about you, it’s one of the many things I love. Including this gorgeous lace.” He joked as he traced the strap of your bra. “Oh hush, what’s going on?”
“Promise you won’t freak out?”
“Promise.” You smiled before grabbing his hands, with wide eyes filled with curiosity staring up at him, he couldn’t help but feel the pressure. “An old friend asked me to be a sperm donor, and before making my donation, I thought it best to uh…” You raised an eyebrow as Evan struggled to find the right words, “To keep my swimmers in the tank, if you catch my drift.”
“I catch your drift, or is it a flow?” Evan rolled his eyes as you raised yourself to kiss his cheek, “I fully understand, you don’t have to be sorry. I think what you’re doing is absolutely amazing Evan, helping to start a family? That’s really sweet of you, but it must’ve been a hard decision.”
And that’s what the loved about you. Your willingness to listen, to wait and understand what you were being told. Most girls Buck had been with had never really seen everything about him, nor understood him. With you felt truly seen, and heard. Never judged. And you were breathtakingly beautiful, which was a nice bonus.
“It was.” He watched as you grabbed the hem of his shirt, pulling it over his head, “If i’m half naked, so are you. Now let’s sit and talk, when did you decide to help them out?”
For the rest of the night, the two of you simply laid in bed and cuddled, looking up at each other. Whilst you talked, Evan found his eyes trailing down your body. The two of you were in your underwear, and you your bra. With you practically ontop of him he found an intruder settling in.
“What is that?” You whined from underneath the covers, “Uh, maybe it’s my phone?” Evan rationalised as you stared at him, “Unless I stole someone’s phone and put it on charge, I don’t think it’s a phone.” Evan tried to stop you before you raised the covers, “Oh.”
“Well hello there.” The pillow was swept from underneath you as Evan buried his face in it, “Don’t,” Your laughter made his heart beat faster, and your hand which circled his crotch made him buck his hips upwards. “Oh god, please don’t.”
“Don’t… what?” Evan buried his head into your shoulder as you continued to tease him, it was the funniest thing you’d seen all day. And a helpless Buck was a fun one. “I like hearing you beg.” He slammed the pillow down onto his lap, “Y—you can’t say things like that!” His cheeks were turning red, whether it was embarrassment from his stutter or your hands, you liked it.
“Sure I can, just did. And you want to know something Evan?”
“Not really.”
“Indulge me,”
“Okay.” Evan gave in as you leaned into his ear, “I don’t sleep well with anything on.” You quickly kissed him before unclasping your bra, throwing your undergarments onto the floor and settling back in.
“Goodnight baby.” You smiled before turning off the lamp.
It was going to be a long night. Evan sat in the dark for about an hour before his situation calmed down, if he was sure of one thing? You were going to be the death of Evan Buckley.
It was donation day, finally.
Evan was practically bouncing off the walls after his shift, zooming down to the clinic before another mishap ruined his donation day. And luckily for him, he was given a cylinder and a few magazines before being sent on his way. His fingers drummed against the wheel of his jeep, he was having a good day.
The only thing better? His date with you tonight. What he hadn’t expected was to come home to candles, rose petals and his favourite girl happily sleeping in bed.
“Uhh, Y/n?” You sat up straight away in bed, “Evan! You’re back!” He walked up the stairs before setting his phone and keys down, “Whoa, you look…” You were wearing one of your favourite sets, and a new favourite of Evan’s, it didn’t exactly leave a lot to the imagination.
And he’d seen more than enough of you.
“Oh god, you look so good.”
“Well you’re extremely lucky, this is all for you. Almost five weeks, you did so well Evan.”
“I did well?”
“Yes you did, and you know what?” Evan shook his head rapidly, he was itching to touch you, “I cleared the day tomorrow for you and me, we can stay here as long as you’d like.” Evan felt weak in the knees, “Oh I love you. Now can I please throw you into bed?” You giggled before wrapping your arms around his neck.
“You can do whatever you’d like, Firefighter Buckley.”
“Oh, Firefighter Buckley?” Evan pushed you down to the bed before climbing over you, “Mhm.” His hands lifted your gown slowly, stroking the soft skin, “Now I really want to see you in my coat.”
“Oh? What, with your name on the back? All yours aren’t I?”
“That you are. You’re not gonna be walking for a few days.” Evan teased as he planted kisses along your neck, you raked your hands through his soft hair, “I’m definitely not complaining.”
Hard times have good outcomes, or something like that.

A/N: Uhm, let’s not talk about this…
Evan was in love.
For the first time in his life he was truly, head over heels for someone. Even he himself couldn’t believe it. His friends all noticed the change in demeanour. The excessive happiness that he seemed to radiate at all time. They couldn’t find it in themselves to be anything but happy for him.
He’d had his fair share of relationships, but of course they didn’t last. Whether it was off on travels, untrustworthiness or a bad connection. They didn’t last. But with you, he knew you were the one. From the way you looked up at him, the way you smiled when he held your hand. You never judged him, dealt with his family issues as well as his own recklessness.
You were perfect, in every way. And Buck knew it. It’s why when he found out you were think about breaking up with him that he found himself spiralling.
He’d been using your phone to text Bobby, to tell him he wasn’t coming in the next day. You’d both planned to have a beach day, since the both of you had been busy lately. After texting Bobby, a text from your friend has caught his eye.
Just break up with him!
Evan could feel his heart racing, what the hell?
So he pressed on the conversation and found his worst nightmare. You’d been talking to her about how you found yourself with less time alone, almost always being dragged out to a restaurant or some other place by Buck. You felt smothered, but didn’t have the heart to tell him. If you’d told him he was being clingy he would’ve tried to dial it back. But speaking about him behind his back? To your bitch of a friend?
It wasn’t right of you. And it wasn’t right of her to encourage these thoughts. She’d met Evan before, multiple times. She always talked about how perfect the two of you were for each other. And here she was, trying to get you to leave him, your soulmate.
So he texted her, on your behalf.
I’m not breaking up with him, don’t text me. I don’t want to see you anymore.
Then he blocked her number.
“Evan?” His head rose from the pillow, looking down at you as you walked into the apartment. “Yeah babe? Everything okay?” He heard you jogging up the stairs, “Maya blocked me, I think. I tried to talk to her on Insta and she told me to screw myself. I don’t know what I did wrong.” Bucks heart hurt at the sight of you crying.
“Oh baby, you didn’t do anything. You shouldn’t be thinking about a friend who can be so rude with no explanation. C’mere.” He held his arms out for you as you settled into his arms, tears dampening his shirt. “I’ve got you, you’re okay.” He cradled your head against his chest. “I— I just don’t know what I did.”
“Shh, don’t waste your energy on her. Okay?” Your head lifted, “Okay…” He could sense your uncertainty, you’d been friends with Maya for a while, almost a year. He knew it’d be hard for you to get over it, but it was for the best. Evan knew what was best for you.
Your boyfriend was acting strangely, to say the least.
He’d been much more involved with your friends now. Always asking after them, what you guys were doing, whether or not Maya came back in touch. It felt as if you couldn’t breathe in their presence without a million texts from him.
Evan ❤️
Where are you right now?
Who’s with you?
When are you coming home?
Home. He always assumed you were coming to his place. As if you were already living together when you’d only been together for five months. Even when you brought it up to him, he’d brush his actions off.
“I mean we’re practically living together already no? What’s the point in you having your things somewhere else when you can have it here. Saves you a trip in the morning baby.” Evan murmured into your neck as you stood in the bathroom. “I… I have my own place Evan. I like having my own place. It’s not just my things that are there. It’s my place.” His arms briefly tightened around you at the sound of your protest.
“I know, but don’t you want to live with me? Be with me?” Buck retracted his face from your neck, his arms circling around your neck as your hands held on to his arms. “I do! I do want to be with you. I am with you baby.” His frown disappeared in a second, replaced with an unsettling smile. “That’s what I thought.” He kissed your cheek before walking out the door.
You stared into the mirror. What the hell does that mean? That’s what I thought? You shook your head in an attempt to collect your thoughts. Did you want to be in this relationship? Where you felt like you were being babysat? As if Buck was your parent, always asking where you were and who with. As if you couldn’t handle yourself, needing supervision.
It took you another month to realise this isn’t what you wanted in a relationship. You wanted to be equals, to rely on eachother and trust each other. The ability to go out and not give your exact location every ten minutes. To not feel as if you have an overwhelming pressure behind you, always looming. Like a shadow.
But it was a month too long. You’d given Evan even more access into your life. He’d sweet talked you into sharing your live location with you. Even your bank account was accessible to him, being able to overlook your transactions. He had keys to your apartment and even his face ID on your phone (not that you knew he had access to your phone).
You’d confided in your best friend. And she’d encouraged you the whole time. She herself hadn’t noticed Evan’s overbearing behaviour, he always handled himself properly in public. Not a single person would suspect him of being so controlling. He was to sweet for that. And even if they noticed his clinginess, they viewed it as a sweet trait.
He loves you so much he can’t breathe without you. Half of his personality had become you. His wallpaper was a photo of the two of you, his password was now your birthday. His pantry and fridge were filled with your favourite foods, even when you weren’t staying over.
It was all you. Evan finally had someone to love, to spoil and to hold with all his might. He’d be damned if someone tried to take you from him. So when he used your phone to call an Uber since you’d both walked to the restaurant, imagine his surprise and anger in finding another friend of yours against him.
Y/n: I think I’ll tell him tonight, at his place. Somewhere he feels comfortable and won’t be embarrassed.
Rebekah: Good idea, I hope he takes it well. I don’t think he means to cling in all honesty. Might just be a subconscious decision since he hasn’t had many long term relationships. Hopefully he finds someone for him.
Y/n: I know, me too. I just feel so bad, he’s had like two or three girlfriends before me and none of them worked out :(
Rebekah: I know babe, but don’t stay with him out of pity. That’s even worse for him.
Y/n: It’s not pity, I’m not still with him out of pity. I really do love him, but I can’t help feeling as if I have no space. He’s always asking for where I am, and with whom. It’s overbearing. And he seemingly can’t handle me being independent, as if I need him to do everything for me. I’m not a child.
Rebekah: You aren’t, no where near it. I get that you love him, but this isn’t healthy. You both deserve better. Some girls love a guy who cares so much. Wishing you all the best, I have a wine bottle waiting for us x
Y/n: Maybe I can wait to do it another night? I’m having a good time, reminds me why I love him :(
Rebekah: No!! If you keep going you’ll never get away.
Y/n: Pleaseeee??
Rebekah: Breakup sex isn’t a horrible idea. Might soften the blow lmao 🤣
Y/n: That’s not what I meant! I’m gonna go, and am NOT leaving to have sex.
Rebekah: Whatever you say, happy break up day xx 💋
Happy break up day? What a bitch.
If there was one aspect of your relationship that never suffered, it was in the bedroom. And Evan couldn’t help but notice when he was closing your open apps, your cycle tracking app. His thumb hovered over it, he looked around to make sure you weren’t returning from the bathroom. Only a few words stuck out for Evan.
High chance of getting pregnant.
You soaked in the ride back to Evans place. One more night with him, that’s all you were giving him. The idea of breaking up with sounded alright over text, but actually facing it? Your hands were sweating, heart racing. You didn’t want to let go, but you knew you had to.
Now or never.
Your eyes darted around Evans apartment, soaking it all up for your last time, when his hands came around your waist as he kissed your neck. “A bit eager aren’t we?” You joked as his hold tightened, “Mhm.” He grabbed you by the hips before turning you to face him, “You look amazing, and you smell so good.” You couldn’t help but blush at the compliments, Evan always knew how to make a girl blush.
“I do?” His hands cradled your face, kissing you on the forehead, “You do baby.” Evan’s hands travelled down to your butt, “Up.” He only needed one word, and so did you. He carried you up the stairs, then softly laying you down on the bed.
Evan was swift in taking your dress off, then his own outfit. “I love you.” He spoke as he thrust into you, your hands held on tightly to his hair, “Oh god Evan!” He couldn’t contain his smirk, he loved you like this. An absolute mess, all for him.
“Say it back.” His fingers dug into your hips.
“Ow! What?” Your brain was foggy, Evans words went in and out your ears.
“Say. It. Back.” His voice held no sweetness, it was purely demanding. His pace was brutal, and again it felt as if you couldn’t breathe. The pleasure was overwhelming, you felt so good. “I…” Your heart was racing again, it felt wrong to tell him you loved him.
His teeth bit down on your collarbone, “I love you!”
You shouldn’t have said it back. It was all that you could think about as his demeanour changed again, a lovesick grin on his face as he kissed you passionately. His hands felt heavy on your skin, burning into you. All you could feel was Evan. Your head was hazy as he carried you, bridal style. The water was warm, and so was he.
Evan slid in behind you in the bath, his arms were strong around you. He took his time in cleaning you off, savouring the moment. “You hungry?” He sounded so casual, as if he hadn’t literally bruised you moments before. “A little.” Your voice was quiet for some reason, you didn’t know why. “We’ll have anything you want.”
That night you spent with him was one of the weirdest of your life. You felt safe with him, more so than you felt with anyone else. But you couldn’t shake the memories of prior times. Him literally crashing a birthday party to make sure you were where you said you were. Evan dragging you back into bed when you needed to work. Him telling you to not reach for the top shelf, saying it was ‘too much for you’. Or him cutting up your food.
Everytime he looked at you, you felt conflicted.
Was this what love was? Uncertainty? Through the night you found yourself tired. Your brain was constantly filing through a million thoughts, about Evan, about yourself and your life. You loved him, but would it be wrong to stay with someone who seemingly infiltrated every aspect of your life? You didn’t know, all you knew was that the pizza was amazing and he was snuggly.
So you stayed the night. You’d fallen asleep in his arms halfway through ‘Me Before You’. You’d spent majority of the movie arguing over whether she should’ve stayed with him or left. And whether he should’ve lived to be with her. “It’s not right! He’s miserable! She should be understanding of him wanting to leave! Which she is in the end.” Evan shook his head as he tossed his slice into the box. “You’re so wrong.” You gasped.
“He should stayed for her. He knew she loved him and it was selfish of him to leave.”
“He was miserable Evan!”
“Would you leave me if I lost my ability to walk?”
Well that sentence shut you up quickly. “I—, I wouldn’t. I’d stay with you. But the movie is different, she meets him afterwards. He’s already miserable, and she makes it better, yes. But he knows he can’t give her the life she deserves. So he’s selfless in letting her go. And also, if you wanted to go, I’d support you. I’d be sad, yes, but you’re not happy. And I’d want you to be happy.”
“I’d never tell you to leave me. You’re too good to let go. Having you by my side is all I need.” You remained staring at the screen, unable to move. “Thank you.” Evan raised his eyebrows at your dismissal of his words.
“I love you Y/n.”
You turned to him with a small smile, “Love you too.” And within ten minutes, you were sleeping in his arms. Evan glanced down at you with a smile before pulling out his phone. He typed out the date of yesterday. It seemed like a date he’d need to remember. And it was lucky, in about nine months, he’d be holding a mini you in his arms.
You woke up with Evans arm draped over you, locking you in place. You slipped out slowly, grabbing a shirt and leggings of yours. You’d failed in breaking up with him, you knew you had. Last night had sucked you right back in to the storm that was Evan Buckley.
He looked at peace when he slept. Content. Maybe you could have a talk with him about boundaries. You weren’t ready to let go of him yet. And it was exactly what he was counting on, he’d wormed his way into your life. To the point where you weren’t sure what life was like without him.
Evan kept his eyes closed as you left. Letting you think you’d gotten away without him knowing. Last night was amazing in his opinion, and when you didn’t respond through out the day he surprisingly kept his cool. He had a good feeling about the night, and if he was lucky, you’d come crawling back either way.
The day had been quiet, you ran some errands, completed your laundry. And with only one text for Evan compared to the usual twenty.
Have a good day ❤️
You found yourself smiling at the text. Simple and sweet. Maybe he’d read your mind and was now reeling back? God you hoped he was adjusting his behaviour. And through the rest of the week, he didn’t show up. He didn’t randomly come to pick you up from work, or bombard you with calls and texts when you went out for drinks. You’d become so accustomed to telling him your location that he didn’t have to ask.
You called every day, barely over an hour. Just debriefing eachother about your days and gossiping. It felt as if you were both improving in your relationship. You were lowering your guard, and he was working his way in. He wasn’t being too pushy, and you weren’t being protective.
And it was a new chapter in your eyes. Since he’d stayed that way. You found yourself even happier than usual. Going out with him more willingly, especially to dinners with the 118. In two months, they saw more of Bucks girlfriend then they had in the previous 7-8 months.
And whilst you may not have noticed any changes of your own physically, Evan sure did. He felt them, your chest was heavier, and a slight bump was developing. You’d recently been an avid sushi lover when it came to eating out, and you’d been having cravings.
You’d confided in Evan about missing your period, and whilst he acted concerned, it was probably the best news he’d ever gotten. He’d come home the next day after his shift with about six different home pregnancy tests. And you’d been willing to take them.
His world stopped when each one came out positive. But first he had to gauge your reaction, the relief was unmatched when you turned to him with a smile. “We’re having a kid.” You whispered as he nodded, “A mini you, or me.” Tears fell down your face as you squealed before jumping onto him. He laughed as you buried your face into his shoulder before facing him, “You’re gonna be a daddy.” And he couldn’t help but cry himself.
You were going to be a family.
Evan was outstanding when it came to taking care of you. Anything you needed was in front of you within the hour. You’re tired? Here’s a pillow, blanket and soothing sounds to help you sleep. You’re hungry? Here’s every craving that he’s logged of yours, with delivery on the way. You’re sore? He’s got oil in his hands and eager look on his face, to which you tease him.
“Missed me that much huh?”
“You have no idea.” He whispered before kissing you.
It was a Friday dinner at Bobby and Athena’s when you announced the pregnancy to them. To which you were met with blank stares which eventually erupted into cheers and hugs.
“Oh god, Bucks having a kid before me.” Chimney shuddered as Evan slapped his bicep, “Evans going to be an amazing father.” You smiled as he grinned, “Why thank you Mrs Buckley.” He kissed you before you could react, is marriage around the corner for you?
“Well actually…” Maddie spoke out as you all turned, “Oh my god, are we pregnant at the same time?” Her small nod caused chaos to erupt amongst the home, “Two new additions to the family!” Bobby cheered. Chimneys mind was close to exploding as he hugged her.
“I’m so happy they all know.” You spoke happily as Evan sighed, “I can’t believe she’s pregnant.” You kissed his cheek before holding his hands, “Do we need to have the butterflies and bees talk?” He rolled his eyes as you pretended to pout, and he poked your cheek.
“Can’t believe we’re going to be a family. The three of us, forever.” Evan kissed the top of your head as Athena and Bobby smiled, “They’re going to be great parents.” Bobby nodded along, “Can’t believe Buck’s going to be a father. I remember his first day, and now he has a whole family.” He couldn’t help the slight tears in his eyes.
As Evan stood in the middle of the room he felt happier than ever. He had a family he loved and a family member on the way. He knew he finally had everything the could’ve ever wanted. Especially with the girl he loved in his arms, and he’d never let go.

You thought the world of Maddie, always had and always will.
So when she showed up on your doorstep, tears running down her face with bruises everywhere? You couldn’t believe your eyes. “Maddie? Oh my god, come in.” You ushered her in quickly closing the door behind her.
“What happened sweetheart?” You always called her nicknames.
She shook her head immediately as you opened your arms, “I’ve got you, don’t worry. Wanna tell me what’s wrong?” You took her hand and sat her down on your couch before sitting next to her.
“Doug.”
Just one word was more than enough for your blood to boil. Her husband, the piece of trash he was, always treated her horribly. Ruining her mental health and wearing down the strong woman you knew she was. He never deserved such a wonderful woman.
“He… I can’t do it anymore Y/n.” Her eyes were glossy as her lip quivered. You could make out a forming bruise on the side of her face, as you softly traced it. “That’s okay, you’re so strong. I know you are baby, I can help you leave him. Is that what you want? Cause I swear, I will pack my shit up and we can leave.”
Maddies heart was racing, most likely the adrenaline from running away. But also having you so serious, so attentive and determined to helping her leave.
Through her years as your best friend she found herself naturally drawn to you, and you were always there for her. The first night she confided in you, you didn’t ask any questions. Just opened your door and your arms as refuge. You never had any good vibes when it came from Doug, and your anger only amplified when you realised what he was doing to Maddie.
“No, you can’t Y/n. Your life is here.” She shook her head at the idea of you leaving with her, for her. “That’s not your decision to make Mads. I have friends here sure, but most of my family is either in L.A or out of America. Friends come and go, but you’re more than that.” Her eyes flicked up at your words, eyebrows furrowed.
What is that supposed to mean?
“What does that mean?” You sighed as you grabbed onto her hands, “This isn’t the right time to say this to you Maddie.” She clutched onto your hands tighter.
“Please, just say it.”
“I love you.”
Her world stopped, the words she’d dreamed of hearing.
“I- I’ve loved you for so long. How was I supposed to not? Maddie you are unbelievably sweet, and kind, gorgeous, intelligent. God you’re perfect. And I am so sorry that Doug took that away from you. But you deserve to live. You deserve to help people, to live life without looking over your shoulder or worrying about angering him. If we leave. I promise I will do anything to keep you safe.”
She didn’t stop the tears as they rolled down her face, wiped away courtesy of you. “Let’s go.” She nodded as you grinned, “Really?” Maddies face broke out in a small smile, “Anywhere to be with you.”
And you did.
For the next hour you spent grabbing all the essentials, clothes, memories, documents etc. You texted another one of your bestfriends that you were leaving, and that she should come over and take inventory before selling your furniture. She was an avid user of Facebook Marketplace.
Luckily you were on good terms with your landlord and your lease was expiring in a week. As long as your friends sold everything of yours, you’d be in the clear.
Home isn’t a place, it’s a person.
And yours was currently right next to you.
It’d taken you and Maddie a bit of time to get on your feet, having crashed with her brother Buck who was nothing but welcoming.
“So you’re the reason she finally left him?” Maddie was currently in the shower, allowing Buck to finally question you. “No, she wanted to leave. I just helped her, I mean you did steal her car.” Buck jokingly gasped as he clutched his chest, “She gave that to me!”
“Sure thing Buckley.” You replied as you took a sip from your glass. “But, seriously, thank you. I have no idea where she’d be right now without you. And she really does love you, I can see you love her too.” Your smile was evident at his words.
“I do, I have for a long time. I’m just lucky. Now speaking of gay couples, you and Eddie.” Buck groaned as you giggled, “I see the tension everyday! You can’t tell me there’s nothing going on there!”
“She’s right, Evan has a crush.” Maddie joined in as Evan shook his head, “The two of you are menaces to society.” The three of you sat down on the couch and continued to bicker. Seeing you getting along with her family so well made Maddie’s heart swell. You were everything and more.
And you proved your love for her over and over. Always supporting her, handling her emotions and caring for her. When she woke up in the night after a nightmare, you were always there to calm her down. When she felt anxious, you listen to her concerns and assured her.
The two of you settled into life in L.A easily. You’d always wanted to live there, longing for home when you moved to study. Your parents were nothing but lovely to Maddie, which made her feel at ease.
She became close with Josh, and Chimney whilst you grew closer to Eddie, Evan and Hen.
So when it came time to the two of you discussing starting a family, you were nervous but confident in asking Chimney.
And out of respect for him and his mother, you named her Jee-Yun.
Maddie couldn’t help but become emotional when she thought about how far she’d come. From the days where she feared returning home to now, when she counted the minutes till she could home to her daughter and wife. Her family.
But she wasn’t in the clear yet.
Doug was still alive.
i usually don’t read characters paired together but i loved this!!

Evan Buckley Masterlist
Summary: During Buck and Tommy's first date, things take a strange turn. And Buck is in awe when his date stands up for him like no one has done before.
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Evan dragged his hands up and down his thighs, trying in vain to wipe away the sweat lingering on his skin that was prickling all over with heat.
Why did Tommy have to look at him like that? Why did he have to smile in such a way that made Evan's stomach twist? Why did he have to exude so much confidence and authority that it made Evan feel like a teenager on his first date?
Well, this technically was a first for him. It was his first time dating a guy.
He didn't know what to do with himself. He wasn't sure how he was supposed to sit or what his stance should be or what was even considered normal anymore. It was as if Evan had suddenly become self-aware. He was aware of his sweaty palms. He was aware of his quickened heartbeat that was pounding in his ears and making it hard to hear anything Tommy was saying.
He was hyperaware of the fact that his hands had been on his lap for too long and he didn't know where to put them now. He didn't know whether to let his shoulders slouch down or stay sitting as straight as a ruler. He wasn't sure if resting his elbows on the table would make him look casual or demanding. He felt like putting his arms on the table but didn't know if that would make him seem too eager.
What was he supposed to do?
"You seem a little tense."
Tommy's voice snapped him back to reality and Evan quickly realised his nails were puncturing through his jeans and digging into his thighs that were now starting to ache.
"I uh, yeah, this is my first date, with a guy. But it's okay, it's going well- isn't it?" He needed to stop. He needed to stop talking and veer onto a different track before he made a fool of himself.
All of Evan's insides started to turn to mush when Tommy smiled. It was a smile that made his eyes crease and his cheeks puff out and even his nose crinkled, something Evan noticed he did a lot. And it was cute. It was endearing. His smile was infectious; Evan could feel himself smiling and flashing his teeth and he didn't know why.
Just looking at Tommy made Evan want to break out into a big smile and start shaking and drum his fingers on the table to tap out the rapid music his heart was creating.
"I'd say it's going well."
Good. Evan wasn't making too much of a fool of himself right now. If Tommy was agreeing that this date was going well then surely Evan was on the right track. He wasn't ruining this like he managed to do when he went on dates with women. Maybe that was the point. Maybe he messed them up because they weren't what he needed.
Maybe this was what he needed.
He could feel himself getting lost in the sound of Tommy's voice that was slightly gritty but still had a smoothness to it that drew Evan in.
He wasn't sure what managed to drag his eyes away from his date, but somehow, Evan found himself glancing behind Tommy towards the bar. And he suddenly wished he hadn't.
"What time did you say the movie was on?"
"I didn't… we haven't picked one yet." Tommy huffed a silent laugh and raised a brow. Was Evan suddenly so flustered he'd forgotten what they'd just talked about? They hadn't decided on a movie, they were going to see what was on by the time they got there. Tommy didn't see the point in rushing dinner and setting a timer when they could just take things slow and see where dinner led them.
"Oh, well, should we go pick one?"
Evan took another swig of his beer to try and clear his throat that had suddenly gone as dry as the desert. He hoped holding his breath to have a drink would slow down his heartbeat.
He wanted to go. He was ready to go; dinner was over but Evan wanted this date to carry on and move onto the next stage. He wanted to see what would happen when they got to the movies. He wanted to see if the night would end with another kiss that knocked him off his feet. Evan wanted to know if sitting next to Tommy in the cinema would stir up his heart and if there would be electricity when they touched. He wanted to bump their knees together and see what would happen.
He wanted to see if he was brave enough to do what he had imagined doing since Tommy asked him out. Reach across for his hand and hold it.
"Is something wrong? You know no one's looking at us, Evan." God, the way he said his name made Evan's heart burst up into his throat. Why did he call him Evan and not Buck? Why did it have such an effect on him when he did? Why did it sound like heaven personified when it came from Tommy's lips?
"I know! I know, I… it's not that, oh God," He slumped his elbows on the table and took a moment to run both sweaty palms across his face.
He didn't want to give that impression. He didn't want Tommy to think Evan was self-conscious and paranoid and didn't want people to suspect that they were on a date. If that was the case Evan would have suggested staying home for their first date and being closed off. He was out with Tommy because he didn't care if people saw or looked or gawped at them.
Them being seen out together wasn't the problem here; it was who Evan could see standing at the bar.
"Evan, talk to me." Tommy's voice was so soft and coaxing and when he leaned across the table to rest his hand on Evan's arm, he felt the way Evan sucked in a deep breath.
He tilted his head to the side and waited, resisting the urge to drum his fingers against Evan's arm and settled for holding his arm as lightly and delicately as he could. To let him know that he was here, he was waiting and he was listening. Evan could tell him what was on his mind, Tommy wasn't going to judge or get upset or annoyed.
"There's someone at the bar that I can't… I can't be around him, that's all."
"Who?"
Evan was almost upset when Tommy's touch left his arm, but it was replaced by a much better feeling when Evan studied the man sitting in front of him.
He studied the way Tommy's jaw ground up until his teeth were grinding together. He noticed the way his face tensed and his upper lip stiffened and curled like he was about to snarl. He noticed how Tommy leaned back in his seat and his chest hardened in a way that made Evan both look and feel small and protected in Tommy's presence; in his shadow.
It was clear it took a lot of Tommy's strength for him not to spin round in his seat and look behind him at the bar. He wanted to scan the entire restaurant to find whoever it was that Evan had clocked eyes on. He wanted to find him and make sure he didn't come over here.
Evan realised the way he worded that might have come across as if Evan was the one who needed to be protected. That wasn't the case. The man at the bar was the one who needed to be protected from Evan, not the other way around.
"It doesn't matter,"
"Yes it does, who is it?" Tommy couldn't resist anymore. He turned in his seat and looked through the wooden pannels behind him to get an obscured view of the bar.
There were four men dotted around the bar and two women. Which guy was it that Evan had seen? Why couldn't Evan be around him? What had the guy done to him? What could Tommy do to make this situation better and make sure nothing happened to his date?
Evan wasn't sure where the surge of courage came from, but he leant across the table and grabbed Tommy's wrist before he could think better of it or shy away. He curled his hands around Tommy's wrist that felt a lot sturdier and larger than his own and he gave a small, almost childlike tug until Tommy turned back to look at him again.
"It's okay, I just… fuck, he's got a restraining order against me, okay? I'm not allowed within ten feet of him, but he technically shouldn't be allowed near me either. This is our date, the last thing I want is to be arrested for violating an order."
The way Evan's lips curved into a crooked, lopsided grin made Tommy's chest tighten and he almost smiled.
"Can I ask why?" Tommy kept his tone soft and his voice gentle, he didn't want to be pushy or intrusive. This was their first date, they were still getting to know each other and clearly there was a lot about Evan that Tommy didn't know yet. But he was as curious as he was worried.
He knew Evan enough to figure that he wasn't the violent type and he certainly wasn't aggressive. So whatever reason there was for him to have a restraining order against him, it had to be some strange, compelling reason.
He realised Evan was still gripping his wrist, as if he was somehow afraid Tommy was going to get up and walk away. And to calm him down, Tommy gently moved his left hand and curved it around Evan's slightly smaller hand. He brushed his thumb across the back of his hand and smiled, waiting patiently to see if Evan would talk or if he wanted to change the subject. Either was fine with Tommy.
"My sister called me one night, freaking out, her boyfriend was going mad at her, he hit her. She locked herself in the bathroom, but by the time I got there… he had her on the floor with a knife to her throat."
Evan closed his eyes at the memory he couldn't get out of his head no matter how hard he tried.
He could still hear the fright in (Y/n)'s voice when she rang him. He could hear her hiccupping down the line, asking him to help her. He could hear Vince bashing his fists on the bathroom door, trying to break it down to get to her.
And when Evan closed his eyes, he could still see the state of that old apartment when he got there. He could see vases on the floor, petals crumpled and trampled into the carpet. He could see wine spilt on the counter, pictures hanging off the walls. And his little sister pinned to the floor with a madman sat on top of her and a kitchen knife held beneath her chin.
"Did he hurt either of you?" Tommy was almost too afraid to ask and he wasn't quite sure why he did.
Maybe it was because Evan was holding his wrist so tightly that he could barely feel his fingers anymore. Maybe it was the look in Evan's eyes that worried him into asking. Or perhaps it was because the man Evan was talking about was still in the same restaurant as him. Posing a threat to the very person Tommy felt a huge need to protect.
"Not badly…" Evan kept his left hand curled around Tommy's wrist, and before he could stop himself, he undid the first two buttons on his shirt and pulled his collar down. He lowered it enough to reveal his left shoulder where there was a bubbling white scar just beneath his collar bone.
It had been small but deep and Evan had to get four stitches that night while (Y/n) got a wound down the side of her neck that had been extremely lucky to miss her artery.
"He stabbed me, but by the time the police arrived, they found me pinning him down… and I'd hit him a few times. He got an order against me, but we got my sister one out against him. I haven't seen him since, but I wouldn't put it past him to cause a scene."
It had been very unfair that the police arrived just as Evan got Vince pinned to the living room floor.
He'd been running on adrenaline, he broke Vince's nose, smashed the side of his head into the floor and broke two ribs to subdue him and keep him away from (Y/n). Evan was acting in a mixture of self defence and anger and the police tried to arrest him until (Y/n) explained the situation.
But a judge still thought it was necessary to approve Vince's restraining order against Evan. But (Y/n) now had one against him, he couldn't get within fifty feet of her and if he approached her he would be arrested. If Evan didn't get there in time, he could have lost his sister.
"Sounds like you did the right thing… was it Maddie, Chimney's fiancee?" The 118 had definitely become more of a family unit since Tommy had left, something he wished he had been a part of. They were all so close and it was even closer, if a little more complicated, given that they were all tied together. Such as Chimney dating Evan's big sister.
"Oh, no, I didn't tell you? Maddie's my big sister, but I have a twin sister, (Y/n)."
"Eddie's wife, (Y/n)?"
"Yeah," Evan nodded his head with a smile. He hadn't been best pleased when his team started to worm their way into his family and hustle in on both his sisters.
With Chimney and Maddie it had been different, Evan didn't see it as a bad thing. But when his best friend started dating his twin, it felt a little too close for home. If he fell out with Eddie, he couldn't go and talk to his sister about it because they were together. And if he argued with (Y/n), he couldn't talk to his best friend because Eddie was her husband.
But he was happy to see them all together, they were all happy, the girls were the happiest Evan had ever seen them and that was what mattered most.
"Wanna get out of here?"
Evan could feel his heart desperately trying to break out of his chest when Tommy gave his hand a squeeze and looked at him with those eyes that were full of burning intensity and something Evan had never seen before.
He could feel his lips curving up into a grin and he could barely breathe when he tried to nod and agree.
There was nothing more that Evan wanted than to get out of here and be as close to Tommy as he could get, whether that was in public or in private, Evan didn't care. He just wanted to be close. He wanted to touch him, hold him, kiss him and attach to him for the rest of the night, the week, the year.
"God yes." Evan could barely hear himself over the sound of his heartbeat pulsing in his ears and he was sure he didn't speak louder than a whisper, but it was more than enough for Tommy.
It felt like pins and needles raked their way up Evan's arm from his fingertips right to the joint of his shoulder when Tommy reached out for his hand when they stood up. He could barely feel his numb fingertips that curved between the grooves of Tommy's hand and it felt like magic Evan had never imagined. It had been a while since he'd held someone's hand, but this was the first time he'd held a guy's hand.
More specifically, someone's hand that was larger than his own and made him feel protected and small and adored and confident.
He took a step closer until there was less than an inch of space between their chests and when Evan took a deep breath, he could almost feel Tommy's heartbeat trying to reach his own. He wrangled with he little ounce of confidence he had stored up within himself, desperate to make the first move this time. To surprise Tommy and show him he truly didn't care if people saw them or stared or realised they were on a date.
He inclined his head but couldn't find the will to close his eyes, not when there was so much to look at and blinking felt like he was missing something.
He didn't get close enough before a familiar voice called out his name and sent a shiver coursing down his spine and down to his toes. And when a set of delicate hands gripped his bicep and gave him a little shake, he stumbled on his back foot.
Evan felt the urge to cry for more reasons than one when he turned to the right and looked at the two people behind him.
Eddie and (Y/n).
"Hey, you two hanging out?" Eddie's smile was somewhat bewildered but his eyes were blind to the closeness between the two men. And the fact that their hands were still intertwined.
But (Y/n) noticed. Evan knew she would; he'd told her this morning he was going on a date, but he left out the very relevant information of who and where he was going. He told her not to tell Eddie because he wanted to keep it quiet, he wanted to see where the night took him before he told anyone other than his sister that he was going out his first date in a while. His first date with a man.
A silent but layered look passed between (Y/n) and Evan as she looked between her big brother and the man next to him.
Huh. He was going out on a date with the guy he was complaining about last week; the one he seemingly couldn't stop talking about. She wasn't expecting that.
"Hey, fancy seeing you here… you two leaving?" Evan couldn't breathe. He glanced to the left at Tommy who was still so close that Evan's shoulder and arm were brushing his stern chest.
Tommy needed to get the hint. Evan wasn't clamming up because they were being seen by family. He was clamming up because a certain person was still in this restaurant who both Evan and his twin shouldn't- couldn't- be around. They needed to leave; all of them needed to leave.
"Gee thanks." Eddie rolled his eyes and swooped his arm tighter around (Y/n)'s waist, reeling her into his side like he was pulling her under his wing. "Don't worry, we're not gonna cramp your style or tag along with you, we're heading home." He gave (Y/n)'s hip a squeeze and kissed the back of her head, but something about the tense smile on Evan's face put him on edge.
Evan gave Tommy's hand a sharp squeeze and jammed his elbow into Tommy's very hard, stern chest before he looked towards the bar.
He could have swooned when the realisation finally dawned on Tommy and his lips faltered into an 'oh' shape before he tried to smile. "We'll walk you out."
"No, that's okay-"
"Yeah, come on. We're leaving anyway."
(Y/n) frowned when Evan grabbed her shoulders and gave her a nudge to get her walking. What was he doing? She wouldn't tell Eddie, she was about to guide him out and head home. There was no need for Evan to panic or for them to try and play this off, (Y/n) and Eddie would leave them be. They only wanted to say hello when they noticed two familiar faces.
She reached behind her and curled her hand around her brother's wrist, glancing up at him a few times before she looked ahead to make sure she didn't trip down the steps.
Her eyes narrowed when Evan moved to stand tall on her left side, as if he wanted to cage her in and steer her forward. She had Eddie on her right, Evan on her left and then on Evan's other side was Tommy who looked very much like their bodyguard with his advanced height and large build.
"Buckley, is that you?"
A quiet whimper mixed with an 'ohh' left (Y/n)'s lips and when her knees started to shake and her feet became rooted to the spot, Evan's jaw locked. He tightened his hands on her shoulders and moved to stand behind her while Tommy inched closer to Evan's side.
They couldn't be sure who Vince was referring to, whether he had only noticed Evan, or if he had seen (Y/n) too.
They had been so close. Almost passed the bar, almost at the doors.
"Who is it?" Eddie couldn't find the ability to smile when he realised his wife had become frozen and his brother in law was now tensed and had a face like thunder. Evan's upper lip was curling up, his shoulders were taut and pulled up around his neck and he was gripping (Y/n)'s shoulders so tightly he was going to hurt her.
"Out. Get her out, it's Vince."
Hearing his name was enough to make (Y/n) shiver but she couldn't find the ability to move. It was as if the faint scar on her neck was pulsing and aching and coming back to life. She could almost feel the skin splitting apart at the seams and the way her blood curdled and shivered felt just like blood oozing down her neck and trickling down her chest.
"Baby come on, you're okay." With his left arm already around (Y/n)'s waist, Eddie moved his other arm around her chest and gripped her elbow.
His lips pressed into a thin line as he locked eyes with Evan before he started to drag (Y/n) forward. He could understand why she had clammed up and he could see she was starting to shut down, but they had to move. They couldn't stand here and create a bottle neck and they couldn't wait for Vince to approach them and cause trouble.
They had to move and Eddie was more than willing to drag or even pick up his wife if it would get her away from her crazed ex. Eddie had seen the damage first-hand when the team turned up after Vince attacked (Y/n) and Eddie. He wouldn't have that man anywhere near them in case he hurt either of them again.
Evan let his hands drop from his sister's shoulders and watched Eddie practically drag her towards the door. With her feet dragging and scuffing behind her and her head flopped forward like she was about to pass out.
"Evan, we need to go too."
Tommy's hand found Evan's shoulder as he looked between his date and the man vastly approaching them. They didn't need to hang around and have a fight or warn Vince away. They needed to follow (Y/n) and Eddie, all of them needed to get out of here and carry on with their night.
"He'll follow her." Evan could feel the panic burning away in his stomach and it was making him feel sick. They couldn't just walk out because Vince was going to follow after them. He wasn't the kind to just turn around and walk away, he would see this as an opportunity.
He had gone to jail and got a fine and a restraining order because of (Y/n) and Evan. He would see this as the ideal situation for payback.
"No he won't, we'll get her and Eddie in a cab, he can't run after a car. But I'm not letting you get into trouble so let's go." Tommy voice was coaxing and calm as if he had been in this situation hundreds of times before.
The way he placed a sturdy hand on Evan's shoulder and looked right into his eyes made Evan breathless and feel faint. He found himself nodding along, even if he didn't totally agree with what Tommy was saying. He continued to nod and he let Tommy turn him round to face the doors, but Evan cringed when an unfamiliar hand found its way onto his arm.
"Buckley, long time no see… was that (Y/n) leaving?"
Dread held Evan by the throat so tightly he couldn't breathe but he found enough willpower to spin on his heels and look at Vince who was so close he could smell the liquor on his breath.
The last time they had been this close, Evan had a kitchen knife punctured in his shoulder and his sister was bleeding out on the floor behind him.
Everything Evan imagined he'd want to say, everything he thought about screaming at this man if he ever saw him again, it all vanished like footprints on the sand. He couldn't find any words. All he could do was look to the left at the closest table which was only four feet away.
There was a knife on that table. If Vince was swift enough, he could grab the steak knife and imbed another jagged scar into Evan's skin. Or Evan could get payback and give him the same matching scar he now had. He could make sure Vince never followed him or his sister again if he grabbed that knife and threatened him with it.
Evan didn't realise Vince was still holding his arm until Tommy leaned across him and grabbed Vince's wrist so roughly it made Evan jolt forward. With such a grip, Tommy could have snapped his bone in two if he wanted to. He could squeeze just a little bit tighter and crush the joint into fragments, he could twist his hand to one side and snap the tendons holding it together.
He felt enough rage to snap it. He wanted to. Tommy felt the greatest urge to break the shorter man who thought he had the right to cut into Evan's pale, perfectly porcelain skin. And when Tommy noticed the way Evan couldn't stop looking at the knives on the table, it made his vision turn red. He was looking for a weapon to defend himself. He was looking at the weapon that had been used on him. He was assessing whether or not he was going to get hurt tonight.
And Tommy decided on the spot that he wasn't going to let that happen. He wouldn't let Evan get hurt, emotionally or physically.
Tommy took the deepest breath of his life until his chest tightened and expanded to the max and he was at the point of shaking. With a little too much force, he threw Vince's hand down at his side, causing the shorter man to stumble back.
And with the small membrane of space between them and a split second to move, Tommy took his chance. He curled his fingers as delicately yet somehow firmly around Evan's arm and pushed Evan behind him. He made sure he was as much of a shield as he could be for Evan and squared his shoulders to hide his date behind him.
When he felt Evan's hand on his shoulder, his hardened composure almost crumbled.
"Touch him again and you'll need a restraining order against me too."
If Evan wasn't overwrought with panic and adrenaline, he knew he would of swooned.
No one had stood up for Evan like that before.
People had agreed with him on things. Maddie had always put him first when it came to their parents. Bobby had his back when it came to work and when Evan did things that were considered dangerous or acting without thinking. But no one stood in front of him and stood up for him like that.
People took one look at Evan and assumed he could look after himself and stand up for himself and he didn't need any help at all. Whereas Tommy looked at him and decided he was worth the effort, he was worth the fight. He was worth protecting.
"Tommy…" Evan glided his hand up and down Tommy's shoulder to try and gain his attention. People were looking; they were anticipating a fight and if they called the police everyone would make a scene. That was the last thing any of them needed. They had agreed to go. They had to make sure Eddie and (Y/n) got off in a cab alright, and then they needed to salvage the rest of their date, if they could.
"If you know what's good for you, you'll stay away from both of them." Tommy locked his jaw, narrowed his eyes and gave Vince a rough shove in the chest until he backed up into the nearest table.
Then, with his hand on Evan's lower back between his hips, he turned and began walking them both out. He strained his ears to focus on the sounds they were leaving behind, the clinking of silverwear, the sound of chairs scraping against carpet. Gasps and murmurs fluttering through the air. But he didn't hear the sound of footsteps following swiftly behind them. Vince had listened to the only warning he was going to receive.
The fresh air almost knocked them both off their feet. It flooded Evan's nose and made his head tip back like it suddenly weighed too much to hold up.
He scanned his eyes around the street until he finally locked onto his family, just a few feet to the left. The sight both made his heart float and break at the same time.
Eddie had one arm looped around (Y/n)'s waist, pinning her into his chest, while his other hand was cradling the side of her neck. The very side where Evan knew his sister's scar was visible.
Eddie had his lips smothering the top of (Y/n)'s head while her hands had scrunched up his shirt so tightly she was starting to tear holes into the fabric. He gently swayed them from side to side, tangling his fingers in her hair while his thumb glided up and down her neck and across the tip of her jaw. "It's okay, baby. You're okay, I've got you."
Part of Evan wanted to walk over to them. He wanted to wrap them both up in a hug and reassure (Y/n) that she was alright. She wasn't going to get hurt tonight, none of them would let that happen. But he didn't want to intrude. She was shell-shocked but she had Eddie. He was enough.
When a taxi pulled up beside them, Eddie finally lifted his head up enough to rest his chin on top of (Y/n)'s head and look across at both men.
He silently tilted his head to the side towards the taxi. They could join them if they wanted. They could come back to Eddie and (Y/n)'s place and talk or have a drink, it was up to them. Evan shook his head. Something told him his sister wouldn't be in the mood for talking and he and Tommy wouldn't want to intrude.
"I'll call you," Eddie mouthed, pressing his hand to his ear just to Evan got the message. He watched his brother in law nod before he pressed his lips back to (Y/n)'s temple and guided her towards the car.
As soon as the car pulled away from the curb, Evan turned to the right, suddenly feeling as if his knees were going to cave in and his legs had turned to jelly. He didn't feel able to hold himself up, he felt like he was going to keel over and collapse.
With that worry in mind, Evan latched his hand around Tommy's shoulder and inched closer until there was barely a membrane of space between them.
"Thank you."
"Evan, you don't have to thank me-"
"You just stopped a fight from happening… you- you stood up for me. Not many people would do that." He wanted to add that Tommy had stood up for (Y/n) too, but he stopped himself. (Y/n) had people in her corner, she had Evan and Eddie for a start. But Tommy was in Evan's corner when he didn't have to be, he barely knew him and he stood up for him anyway.
He couldn't find the ability to breathe again when Tommy smiled that sweet, endearing smile and brushed his hands against Evan's neck to sort out his skewed collar.
"Well that's their loss, not mine. Are you okay, we can call it a night if you want." He would understand if Evan wasn't so keen on going out to a movie after that. Tommy would admit the movie seemed a dampener now after the adrenaline rush they'd just gotten.
He doubted either of them would be able to focus on a movie now anyway and if Evan was shook up and just wanted to go home, Tommy understood. He would make sure he got home and they could reschedule and he would check on him in the morning.
"No! I- I don't want you to go." He almost worried that he sounded too desperate, too eager to stay in Tommy's company. The night may have taken an unprecedented turn, but Evan didn't want to part from Tommy just yet. He wasn't sure he ever would, if he was being honest with himself.
He found himself smiling and his lips parted to let out a shaky breath when Tommy's hands left his straightened collar and moved to cup his neck. He could feel Tommy's thumbs gliding up and down his neck and tickling the side of his jaw like he was drawing patterns or trying to write a secret code into his skin.
"Well then… your place or mine?"
The kiss took Evan by surprise, even though he could see it coming. His heart still rammed away in his chest like a wild rabbit and his skin flushed beet red as heat wrapped around him. And his palms began to sweat as they pressed into Tommy's chest and clutched his jacket to ground himself and remind himself that this wasn't another dream. This was real.
He wanted to be the one to initiate their second kiss. Evan wanted to be the one to take the lead and take Tommy by surprise and kiss him like he was trying to devour him and steal all the air from his lungs.
But it didn't matter so much anymore. Their next kiss could be Evan's chance to take him by surprise. Third time's a charm, and Evan would charm the Hell out of Tommy.
When you and Eddie started dating, you waited quite a while before meeting Chris as you wanted to be sure in your relationship so as not to unsettle Chris. After about 8 months, you were pretty sure Eddie was it for you, and you eventually met Chris. Within 6 months of meeting Christopher you had pretty much moved in with the boys, and when the lease on your apartment was up for renewal Chris was the one who suggested you move in. That was over a year ago and since then the three of you had been living life as a happy little family.
Today, you had a day off from work but Eddie did not, so you had decided to take Chris out for the day. For weeks, Chris had been saying his shoes were starting to get tight so you had decided you would take him to buy some new shoes and buy him a couple extra treats. It wasn’t often you and Eddie weren’t both at work at the same time, even if you didn’t have the same shift, you often overlapped so Chris would spend time with Carla.
Eddie was at work before you even woke up, so you and Chris had a slow morning before heading to the mall. The car journey was filled with music and laughs, you loved spending time with Chris and you guys always had an amazing time.
Once you got to the mall you found yourself chasing Christoper, the shoe shop was all the way on the other side of the mall so you had decided to do fun shopping first. The first stop was at the ice cream parlor, and then the two of you made your way quickly over to the lego shop. You both bought a lego set, as you planned to watch a movie and build lego together in the afternoon. Once the pair of you had gone to all the shops you wanted to, you slowly walked back to the car, trying to agree on a movie to watch while you were building your legos.
You were nearly at the car, when the ground started to rumble. Small tremors weren;t uncommon living in LA, but this was not that. The slight rumble turned to full blown shaking and the lights in the parking garage started to come loose and smash to the floor. You quickly dropped your bags and grabbed Christopher and headed for the car, it might not have been the smartest idea but in your panic it seemed like the safest option if the garage was to crumble.
Somehow, you managed to get to the car in record time as you were opening the door, you noticed a piece of debris falling and you quickly pushed Chris into the car. Within seconds of you getting Chris safely into the car, the debris had come down, knocking you down in the process. You hit your head on the concrete and briefly lost consciousness, but you quickly came around to the sounds of Chris’s cries.
“I’m here Chris, I’m okay,” you mumbled as you tried to wriggle free. Although, your right leg was trapped under the piece of the parking garage that had knocked you to the floor.
Not long after you regained consciousness, sirens were all you could hear and it became nearly impossible to keep your eyes open, and you were soon consumed by the darkness.
“Cap, get Eddie over here!” You heard being yelled from close by. Squinting at the bright light you started to blink your eyes back open and were met with Buck’s face looking down at you.
“Chris, is Chris okay?” you forced out, your throat was hoarse and felt as though you had woken from a deep sleep. You could feel yourself being rolled onto a stretcher, presumably to move you to an ambulance, or at least a safer area.
“Chris was with you?” Buck panicked.
“I think I got him in the car,” you coughed, “Check him first.”
A couple minutes later you heard a car door be forced open, and then Buck’s shouts.
“Chris!” Eddie’s shouts were so loud. He had arrived onto the scene and saw Buck carrying Chris over some rubble away from the car. You turned your head slowly and saw Eddie embrace his son tightly.
“Where’s Y/N?” Eddie suddenly asked. The panic in his voice was palpable.
“Over here,” You heard Buck’s voice get louder as he led Eddie to you. Eddie placed Chris down next to your stretcher and cradled your face.
“Baby, are you okay?” he questioned, whilst scanning your body for any obvious injuries.
“My leg got crushed but I’m fine. How is Chris? Is Chris okay?” you spoke so fast.
“I’m fine,” you heard Chris speak. You could have cried with relief upon hearing his voice. You had seen Eddie carry him, but hearing him speak and confirming he was okay made you so happy.
“Now, let get you taken to hospital, Buck can you take Chris to Athena and get her to call Carla please,” Eddie said as he began to wheel you out of the area. You saw Buck begin to usher Chris towards Athena who you could see a while away directing people.
“No.”
You and Eddie both stopped and looked at Chris who was avoiding Buck and walking towards the two of you.
“Chris, bud, y/n is okay. Your dad is just making sure she gets her leg checked out,” Buck tried to convince Chris.
“No,” Chris shook off Buck’s arms and carried on walking in your direction. Eddie sighed, letting go of your stretcher and turning to Chris before squatting down to his level while holding onto him.
“Chris, I need to take y/n to get checked out. Can you please go with Buck?” Eddie begged.
“No.” Chris was being stubborn.
“Chris please,” Eddie was starting to get desperate.
“I want to stay with mom.” Chris yelled.
You, Buck and Eddie all went still. Suddenly, the atmosphere had changed. Chris had never called you mom before. The three of you all looked at each other in shock unsure what to say or do next.
“Come here Chris,” you beckoned the boy, before helping him to sit on one side of the stretcher after you had collapsed the arms, “You can stay with me.”
Eddie was still looking at you in shock, starting to feel love swell in his chest. The idea that Chris saw you as a mother figure made him so happy.
“Chris, it looks like your dad is frozen,” you laughed whilst looping one of your arms around the boy. You had managed to get him in a place where he wasn’t near your leg which was causing excruciating pain.
This brought Eddie out of his shock and he walked over to the two of you.
“I love you both so much,” he breathed as he leant to kiss both of your foreheads, “Let’s go get mom all checked out.”
Are you Jealous?
Summery: You are with Eddie and Marjan when the plane goes down. (This is set during the crossover)
Pairing: Eddie Diaz x Reader
“I’ll show you mine if you show me yours”- Marjan said and you couldn’t help but roll your eyes.
They were so busy flirting with each other that it was like you weren’t even there.
You wanted to slap them and it didn’t have anything to do with you being in love with Eddie Diaz... no sir! You just didn’t think it was polite to ignore other people, in particular when those people were really close friends with one of the person who was doing the ignoring.
You groaned out loud... you should have stayed in LA. Damn Evan Buckley and his “come on Y/n/n you can’t leave me alone with Eddie and Hen.” And he had looked at you with those puppy eyes you couldn’t tell no to.
Beside Buck had spent the last two weeks listening to your moping for his best friend so you kinda owned him.
So yeah that was it: you were in love with your coworker/ friend who was so busy flirting with another girl he basically forgot you even existed.
Fuck Buck... you would like for him to be here just to prove him how wrong he was about Eddie hypothetical feelings for you.
“Mayday mayday... we’re going down”- you heard on the radio while watching the plane with Hen on falling down.
You hadn’t even metabolized what was happening yet that you watched Eddie falling on the grown.
“Diaz”- you heard Marjan saying with concern while getting to him
“Don’t touch him”- you almost screamed and you abruptly shoved her back
“What the hell”- she looked at you
“Sorry. But touching him is not a good idea. He’s having flashbacks.”- you said to her before focusing again on Eddie. She could think you were rude how much she wanted, you didn’t care. The only thing that mattered was Eddie
“Eddie. It’s me Y/n”- you softly said but all Eddie did was taking you down while covering you with his body before starting talking
“This is Eagle two we need extraction, I repeat we need extraction right now”- he said
Marjan looked at you like he wanted to come help you, but you shook your head. Who knew what Eddie would do if someone tried to come close
“Eddie, I need you to focus on my voice and come back to me ok? This is not Afganistan, we are in Texas remember”- he looked at you like he was seeing through you, but at least he had stopped calling for help -“we are here fighting wildfire and I really need firefighter Diaz back with me ok? So why don’t you tell me five things you can see”
He shook his head
“Come on Eddie, I know you can”- you slowly caressed his cheek trying not to spook him to much -“Come on Eds five things you see please”
“Levees, threes, your eyes, the fire, your radio”- he said slowly and you could see his eyes were becoming more and more focused
“Good job. Now four things you can feel”
“Your hand, the dirt, the levees and the wind”
“Three things you can hear”
“Your voice, the radio, Marjan talking”
“Two things you can smell”
“I can only smell the smoke”
“Yeah you’re right. Last one...One thing you can taste”
“The smoke again... fuck I’m so sorry”- he said taking a deep breath
“Hey it’s ok”- you said still caressing his cheek -“are you ok?”
“Yeah thank you”- he whispered.
You couldn’t stop looking at his eyes... damn if they weren’t beautiful
“Hmmhm”- Marjan cleared her throat behind you and you stepped away from each other after Eddie had helped you stand up
“The guys are here we should go”- she said
You simply nodded and started walking trying to calm your heart that hadn’t stopped going crazy since Eddie had pushed you on the ground.
After hours and hours fighting the fire, after rescuing Hen and Owen with the fire truck Buck and Tk stole, you were finally ready to go home and you couldn’t wait even a minute longer.
“I gotta mention though, I already have a boyfriend and it’s pretty serious so...”
You heard TK saying to Buck and you snorted and started laughing once you saw the shock on Buck’s face.
“You’re such a flirt”- you said to Buck once TK left
“Shut up! I wasnt flirting, I am a people person I can’t help if it comes out as flirting sometime”- you heard Buck but you were too busy looking at Eddie and Marjan who were talking behind him.
“What are you even looking at?”- Buck turned enough to see what got your attention- “I can’t believe Eddie and Marjan are friends and she didn’t give me even the time of a day”
“Please not you too”- you whined
“Oh is someone jealous?”- Buck said while patting your side
“Please don’t start with me, I had to stand those two flirting with each other for hours in the middle of a wildfire. You can give me some slack”
“It wouldn’t have happened if you hadn’t been such an abandoner. Anyways I’m sure he’s not interested”- he shrugged his shoulder
“If you say one more time he’s interested in me I’m gonna kill you Buckley. Because if I was going to believe you before, I sure don’t now. Believe me, I know Eddie Diaz’s flirting smile and he was giving it to her”- you pointed your finger at Buck
“Hey”- you hear behind and you saw Mateo behind you
“Hi”- you smiled
“I’m... well... I just wanted... ok I know that we live in two very different country but could I have your number?” - he said in one breath
You turned to look at Buck and you could notice he was laughing
“I... I’m honored but-“- you started saying but you were interrupted by Eddie
“What’s going on?”- he asked
“Mateo has a little crush on our dear Y/n and was asking for her number”- Buck answered and if your look could kill, Buck would be dead already
“Don’t you two live a little bit too far from each other?”- Eddie huffed
“Well it didn’t stop you and Marjan, did it!”- you said and if you could, you would had taken all back because everybody was silent now and you knew it was because your jealousy was showing
“Uhm... well I’m sorry if I overstepped, I didn’t know you were with somebody already”- Mateo said before leaving
You closed you eyes hoping for a moment you could just teleport yourself back to LA and avoid everything and everyone.
So, since you were a mature person that wasn’t scared of confrontation, you turned around and hopped on the fire truck
“What just happened?”- you heard Eddie saying. You couldn’t hear if Buck told something to him because you decided that listening to some music was the better option.
Someone took one of the earbuds out of your ear and when you looked with one eye you saw Eddie.
Fuck everything, you thought
“Could you explain to me what just happened”- he asked and you wanted to just knock some sense into him
“Don’t know what are you talking about? Are we ready to leave?”- you tried to change subject but one look from Eddie was enough to understand it wasn’t happening.
“Come on, just tell me what’s going on? Do you think I haven’t noticed you have done everything to keep me at arm length”- he said and you snorted because... come on
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”- you said
“What?”
“Really Eddie? You’ve been flirting with Marjan for days totally forgetting I was there, and didn’t have any interest in seeing it by the way, and now you have the gut to say I’m keeping you at arms length. Well you know what Fuck you Eddie Diaz. FUCK YOU!”- you were basically breathless
“Are you jealous?”- he smirked and you started hitting him because let’s be honest he deserved it -“hey hey stop hitting me”
“Fine”- you said before leaving the fire truck
“Is everything ok?”- Buck asked
“Your best friend is an asshole”- you said
“Y/n wait... wait”- you heard Eddie following you - “wait a second”
“What?”
“I’m sorry ok. It’s just that you sounded a little bit jealous”- he was still smirking
“I’m warning you Eddie Diaz you better stop smirking or I swear to God”
“What?”- he said still with that smirk on his face
“You’re lucky I love your son more that my own life and I could never do something that could make him sad because you wouldn’t be able to go back home otherwise”
Eddie wasn’t smirking anymore and he took a step towards you
“So what would you do if you didn’t love my son?”- he asked and his voice was weird but you didn’t know why
“I... I... well I don’t know. I am not a violent person”
“You hit me before”- he smiled
“Yeah well you probably didn’t even feel my punches with all of that”- you said while pointing at Eddie’s chest and biceps.
Fuck he had so many muscles
He was smirking again and you hated him... well not really but he didn’t need to know that
“You know you sounded a little bit jealous before ”- he said while coming closer, your feet were basically touching and you were having trouble breathing -“and just to be clear, if you are, you don’t have any reasons to”
“I’m not”
“Good, because I’m not interested in Marjan”
“I don’t care”- you said
He caressed your cheek and you finally lifted your eyes up to look at him
“You don’t need to be jealous”- he whispered
“Ok”- you said
And in that moment you almost believed Buck about Eddie having feelings for you, but why wasn’t he kissing you?
“Guys we have to go”- Hen said and when you looked at her you saw she was filming you two and you couldn’t help but groan. Eddie must have seen it too because he laughed before hugging you.
“Come on”- he whispered- “I can’t take you out on a date if we don’t go back home first”
“What?”- you were dumbstruck
He just kissed your cheek and went to the fire truck.
Damn it! Now Buck wouldn’t stop gloating about being right for sure...
Fate’s fault
Summery: you’d always been confused about your feeling for both Eddie and Buck, but then Eddie had started dating Ana and Buck started flirting with you so you thought ‘that’s destiny choosing for me’. But you should have known destiny was a bitch
Pairing: Reader x Evan Buck Buckley x Eddie Diaz
Getting your job at the 118 had been a dream coming true; your last firehouse had been a nightmare: you had been the only woman firefighter, the first they had ever had and, let’s be honest, they hadn’t been nice. The teasing had been never ending, the constant flirting, even thought you hadn’t been interested and you had made that clear, was annoying.
So when you heard about an opening at the 118 you had seized the opportunity. You had soon felt like you were home: your colleagues were nice, they respected you and even though the rookie had flirted with you the first time you had met, he had stopped as soon as you had told him you weren’t interested and now you were actually friend. So you were finally doing the job you loved in a stimulating working environment.
Trouble started when you met Eddie Diaz and Evan Buckley. You had only heard about the first shift team and you had heard talks about Eddie Diaz and Evan Buckley in particular: Jessica, your colleague, had described them as two hot badasses who were also really nice. You had rolled your eyes at her.
The day you had met them you had just decided to go to work early so you could do some work out.
You had just entered the gym when you saw them training and your first thought was that “fuck Jessica was right”. You had tried to pretend you didn’t see them and focus on your work out but they had also see you walk in and, being the nice person that they were, they had smiled at you and introduced themselves.
That day you had spent most of your time in the gym talking to them instead of working out and when their shift ended and they left, after you had promised to go out for a drink with their team, you had stood there looking at the door gym until Jessica had walked in. You hadn’t told her about your meeting with the two super hot firefighters of the first shift that day, because you knew she would have smirked and said “I told you so”.
That day you had gone home after your shift and you hadn’t been able to stop thinking about them and the troublesome thing was that, you were sure you had a crush on one of the two firefighters, but you weren’t sure which one. You didn’t think much of it that day though: you had talked with them barely an hour, you didn’t really know them. That night you had gone to sleep and you had dreamed about blue and brown eyes.
You had started spending your free time with Eddie and Buck since that day; you had taken the time to know them as friends but the time spent together hadn’t dispelled the doubts about who you actually liked between the two. It wouldn’t have been a problem if you were sure neither of them liked you but some time you could feel their eyes on you when you were out together and you weren’t looking, they were always touching you somewhere, your leg, your back, your arm, your cheek: if you were together they were never far from you. And most of all they flirted with you in particular when the other one wasn’t there.
So yeah you were confused because you had feeling, strong feelings, for both of them: you thought about Eddie’s smile as much as Buck’s laugh; you dreamed about Buck’s blue eyes and soft caressed as much as Eddie’s brown eyes and strong arms. So yeah you were screwed and the worst thing was that, during all this time they had become your best friends so you couldn’t tell them the truth because the mere idea of ruing your friendship scared you.
So you didn’t tell anything, hoping that your feelings for one of them would disappear with time or that fate would tell you which one of them was your destiny. You should have known you couldn’t trust fate, because FATE WAS A BITCH!
It had happened suddenly: one day you were sure that if you kissed Eddie he would have gladly kissed you back, and the next day he was dating Ana Flores, Christopher’s ex teacher.
You were crashed when you found out because even if you had been waiting for a sign to help you choose you still loved him and seeing him with Ana wasn’t easy.
But fate had made the choice for you and you were gonna act accordingly because it was true that you loved Eddie but you loved Buck too.
You started spending more time with Buck and less with Eddie, it wasn’t really your doing to be honest: Eddie had his dates with Ana and needed to spend time with Christopher so you saw him less and less and when you did Buck was there most of the time. Eddie didn’t talk about Ana with you and you didn’t ask, so it was Buck who told you Eddie had told Chris about his girlfriend and they were spending more time together just the three of them together. You thought you heard sadness in Buck’s voice while he told you about Eddie and Ana but you were too distracted by your own broken heart to really pay attention.
If your relationship with Eddie was drifting, your relationship with Buck was flourishing: you had always fun with Buck but now that it was mostly just the two of you you were awestruck by him.
Your first date had been a blast: you had had dinner together, there hadn’t been even a moment of awkward silence and the night had ended with Buck kissing you on your door step. You were happy with Buck, and even if thinking about Eddie sometime huffed a bit you were happy he was happy. Everything was ok... until it wasn’t.
You were on shift when you heard a sniper was targeting firefighter and that Eddie had been shot. You were taken by panic: Eddie was hurt and you didn’t even know how bad it was, you knew Buck had been with him but he wasn’t answering your phone. You couldn’t breath: the two people you love the most on your life were in danger, one of them was surely hurt and you didn’t have news about the other one and you couldn’t do anything.
Jessica found you sitting on the floor in the bathroom, silently crying and trying to breath.
“Hey come on, it’s going to be ok”- Jessica tried to reassure you
“Eddie has been shot, Buck isn’t answering his phone. What if... what if...”- you sobbed. No one was telling you anything and you couldn’t stop thinking about the worst outcome.
“Don’t think about it, Buck is gonna call you soon and Eddie is strong, he’s gonna make it. You gotta be thinking positive honey and you need to be strong for them”- Jessica hugged you trying to calm you.
You had never told her about Buck and Eddie but you had always thought she had her suspicions even though she had never told you anything.
You could finally breath: Eddie’s surgery had gone well, Buck was ok even if still scared and your panic had finally lessen.
You hadn’t talked to Buck yet but Bobby had finally answered your call telling your everything: about the shooter, about Eddie’s surgery, about Buck taking care of Christopher.
You had texted Buck but he still hadn’t answered you, so now that you were finally out of shift and calm you had decided to visit Eddie at the hospital because even if you knew he was ok, you needed to see for yourself.
You were almost at Eddie’s room when you saw Ana angrily leaving. You didn’t think much of it and kept walking: the door of Eddie’s hospital room was open and you could hear voices, in particular it sounded like Buck’s.
You looked inside the room: Eddie and Buck were kissing... on the lips. Actually Eddie and Buck were making out.
You stood there watching without a word: the guy you were in love with and you were kinda dating was kissing your best friend aka the other guy you were also in love with.
Apparently fate hated you and decided to screw you up: you had been in love with two guys between which you couldn’t choose and you had thought fate had chosen for you.
You were right: fate had decided you didn’t deserve either.
You left the hospital with a broken heart not even noticing Hen and Chimney saying hello to you.
Your heart hurt: you didn’t know if you were mad at Buck for kissing Eddie while dating you, you didn’t know if you were mad at Eddie for kissing your boyfriend…. Could you really call Buck your boyfriend? You didn’t care much for labels but evidently Buck did and didn’t think of you as his girlfriend.
In the end you knew you were just mad at yourself for even thinking for a second they actually cared about you how much you cared about them. You had never been happier to not be on the same shift as them: you really needed some time away from them.
They deserved to be happy together if they really wanted to but you couldn’t be their ‘cheerleader’, at least not for now: the betrayal would sting for a while and your heart needed time to heal.
You spent the next day alone: Buck had tried to call you but you didn’t feel like getting your heart crushed even more than it already was. Beside you were kinda feeling petty: Buck had ignored your calls and texts for hours, even after the madness had ended. So why couldn’t you ignore him?
Your day ended with you alone in your bed watching the screen of your phone lightning up with Buck’s calls. You silenced it and tried to sleep.
You knew going to work in the morning wasn’t going to be easy but now that you were in front of the firehouse you were feeling dreadful: why was Buck’s car in the parking lot? You had been sure he would have taken some day to help Eddie and Christopher.
You kept your head up and walked into the firehouse: you had nothing to be ashamed for, you had done nothing wrong beside this was your house too.
You went straight to your locker to leave your bag and of course Buck was there.
“Hey I tried to call you yesterday”- he said while looking at you with his puppy eyes.
“Yeah”- you weren’t sure what you were supposed to say: yeah sorry I didn’t answer but I’m very fucking mad at you for kissing our best friend while we are sort of an item? You didn’t think you were ready to have this conversation with him
“Just yeah… you don’t answer me for a whole day and yeah is all you have to say?”
“Listen Buck this is not the moment nor the place to talk about it, ok? My shift is just starting”- you said while closing your locker so you could head for the door.
“What the hell is wrong with you? Why are you acting like this? So what is this? payback? I don’t answer to you so you decide to do the same to me?! Very mature of you. Well I’m sorry if I was busy trying to save our friend and couldn’t answer your thousand texts”- he was yelling and you could feel the stare of your squad.
You were trying to stay calm because you didn’t want to give everyone a show but you were hurt and he was really pissing you off.
“Too busy saving Eddie or making out with him?”- you said calmly and you could see the shock on Buck’s face.
“What?I-“- he tried to say but you rolled your eyes at him
“Guys?”- Eddie’s voice came from behind you… of course he was here… fate had apparently decided that it really hated you
“So can I go to do my job or you wanna scream something else at me?”- you said to Buck while completely ignoring Eddie. You were mad at both of them because they both had betrayed you. -“good”- you added when Buck didn’t say anything else.
Eddie stopped you looking at you pleadingly but you talked before he could say anything
“Please let me through. I really don’t want to talk to either of you right now”- you knew you had watery eyes but you were hoping he wasn’t going to say anything about it. You took a breath of relief when he moved to let you through.
“I’m really glad you’re ok”- you told Eddie without looking at him before leaving the room.
After Eddie and Buck left, your shift went smoothly: you noticed people looking at you but they were kind enough not to ask anything.
The end of you shift arrived sooner than expected and now you were finally home, ready to end your day… you should have known better.
As soon as you parked you noticed two people waiting for you on your porch; you thought about turning your car and leaving but they had seen you and you knew you had to talk to them sooner or later.
You got out of the car, walked towards your house and once there opened your door without saying anything to them. You went in, still not talking, but leaving the door opened.
“Can we talk?”- Buck said
“Sure… about something in particular or do you want to talk about our day, because let me tell you my day didn’t start that good and I think it’s going to end even worst”- you told them
“Listen, I’m sorry ok”
“Whatever it’s fine”- you shrugged; you didn’t want them to see how much they hurt you
“It’s not fine”- Eddie said- “we didn’t mean to kiss Y/n, ok?”
“Yeah I’m pretty sure Buck fell on you and his lips coincidentally found yours”
“Can you please be serious? I’m sorry I kiss Eddie but I love him, ok? I’m in love with him”- well Buck really wanted to destroy your heart it seems
“Well I’m glad I was able to entertain you until you could have him Buck. I’m glad you finally have what you wanted.”- you weren’t screaming but your calmly attitude had gone out of the window.
“I don’t… I don’t have everything I wanted, neither does Eddie”
“Listen Buck, I really don’t care. I don’t care if you think I’m childish or a bad friend, but I can’t be happy for you two right now. You two hurt me ok? I love you guys with all my heart and you fucking crushed me”- you said without thinking
“You love us? Both of us?”- Eddie said
“What?! No”- why didn’t you think before talking
“You love us. That’s perfect”- Buck laughed
“Are you seriously laughing at me right now? Are you for real?”- what the hell…
“You don’t understand. We love you too”- Buck was giving you his best smile and you weren’t sure you understood what he just said
“What?”
“Buck and I love you, and we love each other too”- Eddie said once again
“Well isn’t that a mess”- you weren’t sure if you were supposed to be happy or cry… because seriously
“It doesn’t have to be… a mess I mean”- Eddie said
“What do you mean?”- you weren’t so sure the bullet hadn’t mess with Eddie’s brain because he wasn’t making any sense
“We love each other right? Why can’t it be a good thing, a wonderful thing. Why can’t we make each other happy, the three of us “
Yeah why can’t you… you thought and you smiled for the first time in days.
Ok… maybe fate hadn’t been a total bitch this time if it lead you to both of them
Oh my god this one shot has been the death of me; I have worked on this for so long and I don’t even like it but I know I’m not going to work on anything else if I don’t take it out of my draft. So yeah. I know it’s a mess but yeah. I didn’t even re-read it so… it is what it is
Summary: (Y/n) tries to convince everyone at the station that she is fine, especially her boyfriend Buck. But when she takes a bad turn out on a call, he gets panicked.
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Whatever you're cooking smells good," Buck folded his arms and leaned forward onto the counter, pushing his hips out and arching his back a little to stretch out.
It didn't really matter to Buck what Bobby was cooking, it could have been anything from cats to crocodiles and he would eat it. Half a bowl of cereal wasn't enough to keep Buck going through a hectic morning shift and it was almost two o'clock now, way past dinner. He was starving and he was desperate to eat anything Bobby cooked.
"Pasta bolognaise," Bobby looked up from the large serving bowl he was pouring the pasta into, smiling when he could see Buck's eyes widening happily.
"And garlic bread." A smile worked its way onto (Y/n)'s lips when she walked past Buck and patted his shoulder as she went. She knew her boyfriend like the back of his hand and he was very food orientated.
She felt his hand graze her lower back as she passed him and grabbed the plates from the side to set the table. They didn't know how long they would all get to eat so dinner was usually fast. Set the table within a minute, everybody down and chug the food and drink to get as much as possible before a call sounded. Half the time they gobbled food and ended up with twenty minutes left to spare and they actually got to sit and digest their food and talk. But more often than not, food was partially eaten and left to go cold while they hurried out on a call.
(Y/n) could feel a headache burning behind her eyes and igniting through to the back of her head.
For over a week now (Y/n) had been feeling off, her headaches were becoming more common and persistent and she was feeling sluggish no matter how much sleep she managed to get or how she tried to eat enough and regular to keep her energy up.
Buck had said she was starting to come down with something and now (Y/n) was slowly beginning to believe him.
When the plates were all in place and utensils were laid out in the middle of the table, (Y/n) curled her hands around the back of one of the chairs and took a second to clear her foggy head. It felt like someone was slowly pumping her head full of air and any moment it was going to burst.
"Alright, are we ready?" Chimney clapped his hands and approached the table with a grin as Hen and Eddie followed behind.
(Y/n) tried to keep smiling and slowly shuffled away from the table and towards the cupboard near the sink where they kept the glasses. She couldn't stop her breaths from becoming shaky when her fingers curled around a glass and started to tremble.
"(Y/n), you coming?" Bobby glanced back over his shoulder when he approached the table with the food. She was awfully quiet all of a sudden when normally she would be first at the table to dish out the food and pour out the drinks.
When he didn't receive an answer, he glanced over at Buck who was halfway between the kitchen and the table before he stopped in his tracks and looked across at his girl. He looked back at Bobby with furrowed brows but waved his hand out at them to signal that they could go ahead and get sat down. He turned on his heels and headed over to where (Y/n) was stood in front of the kitchen counter with her back to him.
"Babe… you okay?" His voice was quiet but when he reached out to rest a hand on (Y/n)'s arm, he could feel her subtly shaking. "What's wrong?"
"Buck…" Her head was splitting like someone was banging a drum so harshly that her head was ripping open at the seams. The thudding of her heartbeat pulsed beneath her skin and pounded through her head so badly that she couldn't even see anymore. All she could make out were the black and white sparkles blinking in front of her eyes.
She could feel Buck's hands both coming up to rest on her shoulders and his lips merged against the back of her head but she couldn't hear what he was trying to whisper to her. Everything was turning to static in her ears.
Both Buck's arms moved to bind around (Y/n)'s waist when her knees gave out and she buckled. Her fingers slipped off the edge of the counter and her arms fell limp at her sides.
"Oh shit!" Stooping over, Buck braced himself a little better and slowly moved down until he was kneeling on the floor with (Y/n) hoisted up against his chest. Her head fell forward onto her chest as her legs curled up beneath her but she was still shaking. Buck kept one arm secured around her lower waist and moved his other arm round so he could carefully rest his palm against her temple and tilt her head up so she could lean her head back on his shoulder.
With a mouthful of garlic bread, Eddie pushed his chair back and jogged over to the pair while Hen busied herself grabbing a medical bag from near the stairs.
"Alright, here we go." Eddie knelt down in front of Buck and reached out for (Y/n)'s crumpled legs, carefully pulling them so they were straightened out and she was laid a bit more comfortable up against Buck. He pressed his fingers against (Y/n)'s wrist as Hen came over to them. "Pulse is a bit fast, not too bad. (Y/n), you with us?"
A muffled groan escaped (Y/n)'s lips as she tried hard to open her eyes but the lights suddenly felt like spotlights shining down on her and they were burning her eyes. She could feel Hen carefully taking her arm and sliding a blood pressure cuff up over her elbow and the tightening sensation sent a shiver down her spine and cleared her mind just a little.
"Open your eyes, babe," Buck coaxed while he smoothed his hand up and down (Y/n)'s arm. And something tingled to life in his chest and bubbled through his blood when he felt her hand shakily reach back and squeeze his thigh.
"Do you feel dizzy or sick?" Hen shone a light across (Y/n)'s pupils when she finally managed to open her eyes and something flickered on her face like a brief smile when she managed to follow Hen's finger from left to right.
"Dizzy… I- I'm good, probably just hungry." (Y/n) shuffled herself a little higher against Buck's chest so she was sitting up properly and she could feel the blood rushing back down to her feet and the storm in her head was starting to calm down, finally.
"You blacked out and you think you're good?" Buck rolled his lips together when Eddie gave him a look. He wasn't being rude but he knew (Y/n) better than any of them, he knew she was more likely to brush this under the rug than consider there might be something more serious than just a little dizzy spell. He for one didn't want to act like this was something small when he had said for the last week that she was coming down with a bug from how uneasy she felt and the constant headaches.
"Alright, if she thinks she's gonna be okay then let's all try and eat lunch, but you're benched today (Y/n). Any callouts, you hang back here to be safe I'm not taking any risks."
(Y/n) pressed her lips into a thin line to supress the groan burning at the back of her throat. She didn't want to hang back and wait around for them to come back off a call when she could be needed, she was here to do her job not sit back and worry. But she could see Bobby's reasoning, she would be a liability today if she went on a call and felt rough or this happened again. It was a safety measure.
She let Eddie take her hands and Buck loop his arms beneath hers so they could hoist her up between them. Her legs felt wobbly like setting jelly but she could shuffle them towards the table without worrying that she was about to collapse again.
It was just a blackout, she probably needed something to eat.
Loosening the suspenders on his shoulders, Eddie pulled them off his arms and shimmied out of his overalls and boots. He picked them up and shuffled tiredly through into the locker room, smiling softly when he glanced over and saw (Y/n) sat on a far bench near the glass wall.
"How you feeling?" He dumped his things into his locker but when he didn't hear a response, the smile slowly slipped from his face and he glanced back over at her.
He knew Buck had been worried for the rest of the shift when they went out and left (Y/n) behind at the station. She had kept herself busy, they all saw the tidy kitchen and the mopped floors implying she had been desperate to occupy herself when she got left behind for the afternoon. Buck had been the first one to run up to her when they got back and make sure she had been fine while they had been out. He worried; a lot.
"(Y/n)?"
Eddie walked over and gently perched himself beside her on the bench before he clasped his hands together in front of him and stooped over a little. His head tilted to the left to try and see her since she was sat at an angle but he sucked in a sharp breath when she turned to face him.
Her hands were full of used, bloodied tissues and there were streaks of blood smeared all across her mouth and chin and a lot of dried blood caked around her nose.
"What happened?" He was careful when he gingerly reached his hands out to tilt her head back. It looked like the blood had mostly stopped now but there was a hell of a lot on her face and the pile of tissues she had crumpled up in her fists.
"I had a headache, then the heavens poured out my nose for over five minutes. Has it stopped?" (Y/n) tightened the tissues in her hands until she could feel them starting to shred and pull apart between her fingers.
She had barely walked away from Bobby after reassuring him she felt much better, and her nose started to pour like a tap. Her head started to go fuzzy and heavy like it did earlier and no amount of tissue or pinching the bridge of her nose seemed to stop it. And Buck had gone for a shower so he didn't have to bother when they got home, the last thing (Y/n) wanted to do was run to him and ask for help. She would only panic him more than he had been earlier and she didn't want that.
"Yeah, I think it's stopped, are you sure you feel alright? You know this doesn't look so good." Eddie couldn't help but feel nervous, constant headaches, blacking out and a nosebleed on a large scale weren't signs of something minor.
"I feel better than this morning… Eddie, please don't tell Buck. You know he worries."
(Y/n) swiped the last crumpled tissue against her face before throwing them all in the bin. She would have to dart into the bathroom and wash her face clean of the blood if she didn't want Buck or any of the others realising what had happened or getting the wrong impression.
"I won't." A nosebleed could just be that and not mean anything else, it could be a one off and Eddie certainly wouldn't want to worry Buck unnecessarily.
He wouldn't say anything; yet.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A soft smile flooded (Y/n)'s face when the man whose name was John, grabbed her hand and held it tightly to her heart. He needed reassurance and (Y/n) would help him as much as she could and calm him down, it was all part of the job.
"Am I dying?"
"Of course you're not, we won't let that happen. We're going to free your leg and get you to the hospital, you'll be right as rain soon." It always felt easier to reassure someone with minor wounds like this.
It was when the victim had organs spilling out or a crushed chest or third degree burns that wouldn't heal that made (Y/n) panic about giving reassurance to them. When she knew there was no way she could guarantee they would survive, telling them everything would be okay felt like a lie and that wasn't always the best course.
But this man only had a leg crushed by some rubble and a few broken bones, nothing fatal that they needed to worry about. He was going to be fine and (Y/n) knew it.
"Alright, I'm going to let go of your hand so we can get ready to move you, okay?" (Y/n) gave his hand a gentle squeeze before she let go and moved so she was crouching behind him with her hands hooked under his armpits.
Eddie was going to lift the metal beam from the man's leg and Buck was in position to free his legs and help slide him onto the board so they could carry him out. He was the last person trapped in here, everyone else was out and taken care of and after this, the team could head back to the station and wait for the next call of the day.
(Y/n) wasn't sure if it was the dust and smoke filtering through the air that was making her head spin or if it was the headache she'd had since this morning but whatever it was made her feel off. Every part of her felt sluggish and slow and her head felt like it had cotton wool stuffed in it.
"Go!"
On command, (Y/n) pulled him back and lifted him up and she and Buck quickly laid him down on the read board and shuffled him up until his head was safely in the foam brace to keep his neck still and straight.
"Alright let's get out of here."
(Y/n)'s arms had never felt so limp and heavy than they did when she lifted her end of the board and followed Buck back through the small break in the wall they had created to get in. Her hands were tensing and twitching in the grooves of the board and it felt like her centre of gravity was shifting more to the left like the world was tilting at an angle. It made (Y/n) want to lean to the left to balance herself back out but when she tilted her head, she felt like she was about to topple over.
She had carried people out like this thousands of times, she'd hooked people over her shoulders and ran from burning cars before and gone quicker than this but today she couldn't seem to catch up. Buck was going too fast and her feet were heavy and weighted in her boots but she did her best to kick the rubble out the way and keep up. She could feel Eddie close behind and her eyes focused on looking up at Buck.
He was wearing his overalls and his coat and helmet so she couldn't see the way his biceps would twitch and strain or the way he would hunch up his shoulders to tense his muscles and go faster, but she could imagine the way his body would move beneath the jacket.
As soon as they were outside, all of them were coughing from the wave of fresh air that hut them like a truck.
Something burned in the back of (Y/n)'s head like she'd been struck with a knife and as soon as they were clear, they set the board down as close to the ambulance as they could manage. Two paramedics filed over and Buck busied himself reeling off the injuries John had sustained.
Forcing herself to smile, (Y/n) leaned down and rested a hand on his shoulder.
"T-they'll fix your leg and have you up and walking in no time, you will be okay." She couldn't wait to hear his response or wait for a thank you or even a smile, she had to move.
Her feet stumbled beneath her and she could feel herself beginning to shake down to her boots. She didn't feel good. She wasn't sure where she was heading, she just had to get away from the victim so she didn't worry him and be away from prying eyes.
When she couldn't walk any further, (Y/n) threw off her helmet and unzipped her jacket and launched it down on the floor. She was sweating, she was cold, she was burning up and shaking and feeling sick all at once.
"(Y/n), hey, what's up what's going on?"
Running her fingers over her face, (Y/n) turned her back to Eddie and shook her head. She didn't know what was going on or what the problem was but there was just something that didn't feel right. Her head was pounding like it was going to explode and since she'd blacked out, it had been progressively getting worse. All of her symptoms had been getting worse whether she wanted to admit it or not.
There was caution in Eddie's movements when he gingerly placed his hands on her shoulders and turned her round to face him but when he did, he could see that her eyes weren't able to focus on him.
"I think you should sit down,"
"I… wh- I want-"
Eddie couldn't fathom what she was trying to say or what words were passing through her lips, none of it made a sentence or any sort of sense but it didn't matter.
(Y/n)'s eyes rolled to the back of her head and she tumbled down like the collapsed building behind them and Eddie couldn't catch her in time to break her fall, but that didn't matter either. He barely managed to go down on his knees when (Y/n)'s limbs tensed and tightened up like she was a puppet whose strings were being pulled.
Both her hands bent at odd angles and her arms pinned against her chest that pushed off the floor while her head started to tremble and jerk back and forth.
She was having a seizure.
"Cap! Captain, go get Buck! Now." Eddie threw his helmet to the floor and leaned over (Y/n) whose body was taut and tense and looked like she was shivering all over. He was the least bit relieved to see that she wasn't fully thrashing around on the floor and her arms and legs weren't being thrown about at all angles, it was more her head that was jerking than the rest of her body.
He carefully turned (Y/n) over so she was laid on her left side and tried to keep his hand pressed against the back of her neck to keep her head forward. He had no way of knowing if she was going to be sick or if she might bite down on her tongue and make it bleed. Either way, he couldn't risk her choking.
"Hey, what-" Whatever Buck was about to say fizzled into the air when he looked over at his girlfriend, laid on the floor spasming and shaking.
He'd never seen her have a seizure before.
"What happened?!" Fury boiled over in Buck's voice as he roughly grappled with his helmet and chucked it down to the floor before he went down on his knees in front of (Y/n). "Babe? (Y/n), baby it's me, you're okay, it's alright." He tried to keep one hand on her arm to let her know he was there while he pushed his other hand beneath her neck and the floor to feel her pulse and check her airways were still open. They couldn't be trying to intubate her while she was seizing like this.
"Hen, get over here! Don't let that second ambulance go, get it here now!" Bobby waved Hen over and pointed over at a paramedic who was about to take the other empty ambulance away from the scene now that all the people were accounted for and safely being transported.
"Has she had an accident, hit her head? Had a reaction to something?" Hen kneeled down next to Buck and took Eddie's place keeping (Y/n)'s head tilted forward while she tried to clip a monitor onto (Y/n)'s finger and listen to her heartbeat.
"No, nothing. She, she doesn't have seizures, this isn't normal." Something violent flashed across Buck's pupils as his jaw locked shut.
This wasn't normal for her, (Y/n) didn't get seizures or get seriously ill other than the odd bout of flu or a cold. She had never collapsed before, never had a seizure and she hadn't hurt herself or had any reaction to anything that would bring this on. Nothing had happened to her today or even this week for this to happen, Buck had kept a close eye on her to make sure she was alright. Clearly she wasn't.
"Okay, okay I think it's starting to wear off. (Y/n), it's Hen can you hear me?"
(Y/n)'s arms stayed pinned against her chest like she was protecting herself from something and her body started to calm down with the shakes but her upper half was still tilting and pushing back and forth like she was being pushed and pulled.
Hen gently pulled up her eyelid to flash a light across her pupil but her eyes were only half visible, still looking up towards the top of her head. Now that she had stopped shaking, Hen tried to listen to her heartbeat and put a blood pressure cuff on her arm.
"Buck…"
"I'm here baby, it's me." Reaching forward, Buck carefully slipped his hand into (Y/n)'s half-curled fist that felt tense and stiff and unusual to him but he knew he could feel her fingers trying to press against the back of his hand. It was enough to make his erratic heartbeat calm down and he brought her hand close enough so he could kiss the back of her hand before he pressed it against his chest.
"Her pulse is steady and her blood pressure isn't too low, she's stable enough. Get her on the stretcher, she needs an MRI."
"On three, Buck. One, two, three." Eddie slipped his hands beneath (Y/n)'s shoulders and Buck lifted her lower half and legs and they carefully laid her down on her back on the stretcher the paramedics wheeled over. She felt so tense and stiff like she was in rigamortis, Buck had never felt her so taut like that before and he hated it.
"I'll ride along with you," Hen patted Buck's shoulder nd glanced over at Bobby for confirmation. One nod of his head was all it took for Buck to shed his jacket which he handed to Eddie before he and Hen climbed in the ambulance.
"We'll meet you at the hospital,"
He wouldn't be able to focus on shift without being by her side and making sure she was alright and everybody knew and understood that.
"Buck, it hurts," (Y/n)'s words were slurred and she could barely keep her eyes open for long but he managed to make out what she said and it broke his heart.
He shuffled closer to the stretcher and brought her hand to rest against his cheek to let her know he was still here with her. He leaned his head to the side a little so he could kiss her wrist and he rubbed his other hand up and down her arm and shoulder to try and stimulate her and keep her awake with him.
"What hurts, baby?"
"My head." (Y/n) tried to lift her free hand to rub her temple but her limbs were so stiff she could barely curl her fingers to her palm.
"It's okay, the doctors will make you better, don't you worry baby. Just keep talking to me, eh? The team will come up and meet us at the hospital, they're all worried 'bout you."
"Stay with me," (Y/n) tried to smile and managed a half smile in Buck's direction and she tried to keep her eyes on him and his baby blue orbs that were staring down at her intently. She could feel his fingertips grazing up and down her skin and his wet lips pressing on her wrist like he was kissing her pulse and helping her heartbeat calm down.
"I ain't going anywhere, baby." Buck smiled down at her and he could feel himself slowly starting to calm down. Maybe this was just a one time thing, maybe she would just need her head checking out and some tablets and be perfectly fine. That was what he was hoping for. But when he looked down at her again, his smile started to fade. "What's wrong with her eyes?"
He glanced between Hen and (Y/n) until she carefully leaned over and pulled (Y/n)'s eyelid higher to get a better look. Both her eyes were trembling from left to right so rapidly it was making Buck's head hurt just from looking at them.
"Baby, talk to me… what's wrong?"
"She's having another seizure." Hen held her wrist and checked her vitals before she sat back down but kept close watch.
"But she…" Buck didn't know what he wanted to say. He'd never seen someone have a seizure like this. Sure, (Y/n) was tense again like her muscles were about to snap, but she wasn't shaking or spasming and her head wasn't moving. Nothing was moving apart from her eyes, he'd never seen anything like it but then again, the fire department didn't deal with seizures all too often.
This wasn't right.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Buck's knee juttered up and down like he was a drummer hitting the bass beat over and over again and it caused his elbows to shake and his neck to strain. He had his shoulders hunched over, his elbows perched on his thighs and his entwined hands propping up his chin.
Something burned to life in his chest when the rest of the team came down to the waiting room to sit with him and wait for any news. He didn't have much of a family out here apart from Maddie who was currently still on shift, but the station had become his make shift family.
He almost clocked himself in the jaw when Eddie gently elbowed him and pointed over to the doctor who was fastly approaching them.
Panic was all Buck could feel and in a moment of desperation, he turned his head until his eyes locked on Bobby who got the silent plea. He advanced over to Buck, laid a hand on his shoulder and followed him to meet the doctor a few feet away from the rest of the team. If it was bad news Buck didn't want everyone else listening in, he wanted to hear it for himself first but he wanted Bobby there too. He was like his dad now and he needed that support.
"Is she okay?" Buck tucked his hands into his pockets to stop himself from scratching his arms to pieces out of nervous habit.
"The MRI showed she had a small bleed on the brain which we've managed to fix, the pressure caused the seizures."
Buck didn't know what to make of that, he wasn't one of the paramedics, sure he had the basic training. He could do CPR, he knew the basic recovery positions and he could help someone in respiratory distress, but this was beyond him.
"What caused the bleeding?" Bobby tightened his hand on Buck's shoulder, it mattered more to know why this happened than how they fixed it.
"We ran a few blood tests which showed her red blood cells were shredded, this is caused by a condition, TTP. It's brought on by pregnancy."
Buck's shoulders slumped and his mouth hung agape as he turned to look at Bobby as if for confirmation and reassurance that he was hearing this correctly. (Y/n) was pregnant. She never said anything to him or to anyone else, surely she couldn't have known about this either. He was going to be a dad. He was gonna have a baby.
"Is she- I- is she okay, though?"
"With medication and close monitoring she will be fine, you can go see her now. Congratulations."
In an instant, Buck had his arms around Bobby, reeling him in for a crushing hug and a breathless laugh before he reeled back and shot down the corridor. He had to go and see her right now, (Y/n) had to be the first person Buck talked to about this, she had to be the one to see his ecstatic face and feel how fast his heart was beating out of his chest at this news. He had to reassure himself (Y/n) was indeed alright after today, he couldn't get excited or relieved until he saw with his own eyes that she was alright.
"Baby," Buck could barely speak from how breathless he felt as he stumbled into (Y/n)'s room and his eyes set on her.
She was sat up in bed, her lips rolled together to supress a smile and tears drenching her exhausted features. He ignored the horrid look of the IV cannula in her hand and the white patch taped to the side of her head where he guessed they had managed to drain the bleed on her brain. All he could focus on was how she was trying to smile at him and just looking at her had his eyes watering.
(Y/n) couldn't help but giggle when Buck hazardly collapsed on the side of the bed and wound his arms tightly around her middle. She smiled when he nuzzled his face in the crook of her shoulder and kissed her neck while she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed the top of his head.
"I- I was so worried,"
"I know… are you happy?" Deep down, (Y/n) already knew the answer to her question but she had to ask anyway, just to be sure. She could feel him laugh into her neck, unable to believe she even had to ask him that and his arms tightened around her until he was pulling her up and crushing her into his chest trying to stuff her into his heart.
"Happy, are you kidding? I'm gonna be a dad!"
