Aromantic Awareness Week!

It's Aro Week! This one is a bit special, folks. Today, for #aromantic Awareness Week, we are celebrating all things aromantic. This one is for you mighty fine folk. Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week (ASAW) is a week to spread awareness and acceptance of aromantic spectrum identities, the issues the community faces, and not to mention a chance for the community to celebrate their experiences and existence! ASAW generally occurs the first full week (starting Sunday) following Valentine’s Day. It was conceived, in large part, as a way for those in the aromantic community who had difficulty finding space for their experiences in such a universally romanticized event to come together and celebrate their own unique experiences.

Here at Tumblr, our community is doing what it does best and marks Aro Week with its winning combination of pizzazz, thoughtfulness, and good humor. You can check it out below or catch the latest over at #aromantic.

I wish a very happy aromantic spectrum awareness week to everyone on the aromantic spectrum! To me aromanticism is an orientation, a life philosophy, a political stance and a big fuck you to heteronormative and amatonormative society and I think that's beautiful! So shout-out to all aros, your experiences are worth sharing and your aromanticism should be celebrated!

ok yeah maybe i am missing out. maybe being aromantic IS a curse bc ill never get to relate to the heartbreak or the torture of knowing the other person doesn’t like you back or that specific form of intimacy or the security in being able to rely on one person or knowing where the boundaries of a relationship are. maybe i’m missing out on a central part of the human experience without ever really getting the answer why. and maybe ill never really know how to progress a friendship bc ill never truly understand a large chunk of the Relationship Spectrum. but at least ill never fucking have to deal with romantic feelings amiright. L to the allos out there fr, maybe i’m winning

I want to make a joke about how stupid Arophobia really is. Why do you care if I'm in a relationship or not?

But then, I remember how aromantic people, in general, are seen as predators and abusers for being aromantic. We are seen as taking accountability for things that have nothing to do with us for the sole reason that we can have sexual relationships but not romantic relationships.

I see it all the time, especially if you are on the spectrum, in general. :(

"Oh, so you can have sex with X but not date them. You must be a predatory fetishizer of X relationships!!11!!" Like, why do you care!? Why are we not allowed to exist!?

A minamalistic digital drawing of a green spotted bush snake. The snake is shown from the side, and has the front half of its body raised up, with the back half curling behind and its tailing curling up the flagpole of the aromantic flag (dark green, light green, white, grey, black stripes) which flies to the left from behind the snake's head. The snake itself is green, with black stripes and spots, and a white and grey underbelly; the white also extends to the underside of its mouth. It had a round, circular black pupil in a white eye, and it is poking out it forked tongue, which is a light green save for the tip, which is black. The snake is wearing a black bowler hat on its head, which has a light green ribbon growing around it. Altogether the snake makes up the colours of the aromantic flag. The background is a pale green.
A minamalistic digital drawing of a messenger/common pigeon. The pigeon is shown from side on, and has a grey head and body, with green feathers banding around its neck. It has a lighter grey wing with black, arching, stripes and markings, the wing ending with green feathers, dark grey transitioning to black tail feathers, and light green feet with black claws. It has a round, circular black pupil in a white eye. It has a light green bowtie on its neck, and it is holding the aromantic flag (dark green, light green, white, grey, black stripes) in its mouth, with a part of the green fabric in its black and grey beak, and the rest flying behind it to the right. Altogether the pigeon makes up the colours of the aromantic flag. The background is a pale green.

It's Aro-Spec Awareness Week again my friends, and that means it's time for more silly little critters! (You can find last year's here.) ✨Keep up the amazing work, fellow aros✨

Cute illustration of 5 cats stacked together and forming the colors of Aromantic Flag.

It's Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week (ASAW).

Aromantic people, aka aros, are those who experience little to no romantic attraction. Hence, they may have trouble relating to the experience of "falling in love" or having romantic crushes.

Let's show love and support to the aromantic community by educating ourselves and helping to spread awareness.

arospecweek.org and acesandaros.org are good resources to start learning more about aromanticism. Ig: @irenekohstudio

A drawing of a leafy plant in aromantic pride colors. Its roots turn to torn strings at the end, symbolising the tearing apart of a red string of fate.

Happy ASAW! Reject amatonormativity, take root in your own meaning!
