Kiri tamed Tanhì at a very young age simply by asking it to be her friend instead of using the banshee catcher.
In 2169, after the second human invasion on Pandora, Lo'ak, Kiri, and Tuktirey were taken hostage and imprisoned in Hell's Gate. From there they were freed by Spider. As the children fled through the woods, Tanhì found them and landed nearby to help them get home. At that moment, however, it was shot dead by SecOps soldiers much to Kiri's horror.
Additional Info - Trivia:
Tanhì was depicted as being a green color earlier in The High Ground, but was then changed to a purple color.
James CameronΒ has stated that the color indigo is associated withΒ Eywa, making it tie-into the color of Kiri's banshee.
Kiri lost her banshee to the RDA, similarly to herΒ adoptive mother'sΒ banshee.
Kiri can be seen riding a new banshee in Avatar: The Way of Water, implying she tamed a new one after Tanhì's death.
"Tanhì" means "star" and "bioluminescent freckle" in the Na'vi language.

You were an Omatikaya warrior, tasked with scouting the perimeter of your clanβs territory alongside Lo'ak Sully, the second son of Jake Sully and Neytiri. Tonight, however, was different. Tensions with the RDA had escalated, and the patrols had become more frequent and more perilous.
Lo'ak, with his youthful exuberance and rebellious streak, often made these patrols feel less like a chore and more like an adventure. You glanced at him, his lithe form moving with a grace that spoke of his Na'vi heritage, yet his expressions and occasional awkwardness betrayed his human upbringing.
