Your personality: You can be pretty shy and given how you present yourself, people have a tendency to look down on you both figuratively and/or physically.

Why you like him: You felt protected but never did you feel like you were a piece of property. You were an independent person. He just wanted to help you out even if you didn't know it. Someone mocking you behind your back? His large statute just appears behind them like a grim reaper. He always has your back in a supportive manner.

Why he likes you: There were rare times where you spoke up for yourself. The first time he saw that he had a newfound admiration for you. The ability to stand up despite the fear is true courage. Even he was scared of you when you got serious. But he's seen you work twice as hard to get what you wanted and inspired him to do the same.

Itoshi Rin

Your personality: You're incredibly nice to the point where you would offer help to your worst enemy with a smile on your face. A classic sunshine x grumpy type of image.

Why you like him: Even though you did like helping people and always gave them the benefit of the doubt, it wasn't like you couldn't get upset. You had off days too. People expecting you to do everything with a smile on your face can have a lot of pressure added on to your daily life. With Rin however he'll gladly tell that lazy manager of yours to fuck off if they call you in on your one day off in the week. Rin was the type to tell people how it is and doesn't expect anything from you just because you do it for others. Your kindness is a gift and if anyone takes advantage of that, they'll have to deal with him.

Why he likes you: Quite frankly, he did find you annoying at first. You were willing to help others at your own cost that it never made sense how you couldn't just explode. But you were the only person that noticed when he was sick and refusing to rest. You were the only person to offer your lecture notes after missing so many classes. And the only person he could call when he was frustrated at practice. You were genuine with your kindness with no expectations to return it. He wanted to return it to you because it's what you deserve.

Mikage Reo

Your personality: A regular minimum wage worker with no solid guess as to what you're going to do in the future.

Why you like him: No it was not because of his money. He had learned that pretty early on when you rejected his presents for the fifth time in the first week you guys started dating. No, what you liked about him was that he always strived to get what he wanted. Everything to him was obtainable because he didn't see setbacks as setbacks. Just mini obstacles for him to overcome in the long run. He may be considered to be in a "different world" to you but it simply wasn't that way. You felt that you were on the same playing field even if others didn't.

Why he likes you: It was the tiny things that he never thought about that you showed him. It was that you weren't tied down to one plan. You were free and always had a new perspective to what he thought he knew. Plain cup ramen? Add on some vegetables, regular cupboard seasonings, and a cooked egg on top. Gourmet meal. You may not know what you want in the future but you are going at your own pace. That's all that matters. Whatever comes your way, whenever you find your calling he knows you'll do it with everything you have.

Bachira Meguru

Your personality: Someone with a realistic "in the box" mindset. You make decisions based on logic and what will yield the best results rather than on a gut feeling.

Why you like him: With Bachira you never have a dull day. Though you had a lot of questions about how he could function the way he was, you find yourself enjoying yourself more times than not. He introduced you to parts of the town you never knew existed. Experience once in a lifetime opportunities. Had thousands of stories to tell. Why he likes you: You kept Bachira grounded. Even sunshines have cloudy days. As crazy as his life can get, you were stable. The lightning rod that can brave itself through any storm. Your realistic mindset can be boring at times but you didn't change for anyone. You don't get swayed by anything without knowing that's the route you want to take. You lived in a safe space that welcomed him no matter what.

Kaiser Michael

Your personality: You were the kind of person that was more along the lines of jack of all trades, master of none. As far back as you remember you didn't have any special talents or skills that you just go about like a regular person.

Why you like him: Though his cockiness can get a bit much at times, you have to admit, he was one of the top players in the world. He made it look easy. What people didn't know was the countless hours he put into his craft. Training his body in every way from exercises to diet, researching his opponents, coming up with new strategies both on and off the field, etc. He knew what he knew and you couldn't hate that he did everything he could to polish it. To be honest there were times you felt jealous that he could shine so brightly.

Why he likes you: You may consider yourself nothing special because you weren't top class of anything but you had more skills than Kaiser could ever think of having. You weren't a pro-sewist but you could stich up his ripped jersey. A top chef in a restaurant, no, instead you made simple, healthy, home made meals that were equally delicious. Average didn't mean boring. It meant that you knew what you knew and it was enough for the both of you.

"saee..!" a small whisper rung through his ear, not paying attention to the other as he focused his on whatever the teacher was saying.

once more, he called out to him. albeit louder than before but not loud enough to alert the people around them. it felt like the two were in their own little bubble. atleast in y/n's perspective.

it didn't take long before he nudged sae on his side. it was only then when he paid any acknowledgement at all with a sharp 'what.'

it sent shivers down his spine, but nonetheless he responded.

"notes. 'need them. i forgot to write 'em down."

"and you think i have some?"

a deadpanned expression made way to your face, a similar one mirroring sae's own face.

"..'had a query that, perchance, you'd be studious enough to take down notes with the time you spent ignoring me."

"do you even know what studious means?"

both stared at each other, as if they were trying to steal a glimpse of their soul before simultaneously turning away, however the loud voice of their teacher called out to them.

"Itoshi, l/n! no speaking to one another!"

as much of opposites the two were, they only had one thing consuming their thoughts. 'so uptight for no reason.'

and they both knew, one or the two of them were going to walk down the halls — not for the gates, but instead detention.

afterwards, they were called to stay a bit later at the end of the last chime of the day.

now standing infront of their teacher. mirroring sae's gaze on the ground cause you were slick like that.

"now do the both you mind to tell me about your conversation a while back?"

the teacher was met with silence, however he kept pushing.

"you will be met with detention, if neither of you don't talk"

again, nothing.

with a sigh, and the most miniscule of patience left; they were sent to detention. the moment the pair was out of earshot, sae slapped the back of your head.

"ouch! what the fuck, sae?!" you processed your words enough to not make it any more louder, since any more violations called of you will be only met with the back of your parents leather belt.

"why didn't you say anything, dumbass." sae on the other hand, did not care. if he was going down then he hands down believed you were going down with him.

"i thought you were gonna start talking!"

"as if."

"asshole."

(both didn't talk about their interlocked hands while walking down the hall, but it was stuffed in the comfort of sae's pocket so.)

left with his thoughts, he sat in the corner of their detention room alongside sae. he laid his head down as sae oh so gently played with your hair.

tranquility, what both of you felt with your time spent. even though anything but peace came out of your mouth, no words could even compare to what you both felt. that's why you two opted for the quote 'actions speak louder than words'

because in this case, it was all the more veracious.

the teacher watching you two didn't even care what you were doing. even going out of the room, unannounced and unprovoked.

and you two took advantage of that by stealing kisses and make up for whatever you spouted at each other.

in this particular time, the teacher seemed to be outside for a longer time. and you always met eye-to-eye with sae (not really). he knew exactly what you were thinking.

dropping his hand from your hair to your waist, he forced you to look up at him by pulling your chin to him.

"ya sure the teacher's gon' be out for long?"

"just shut up, would you? let me have this."

stealing your lips in a kiss, it felt better than no other. soft touches along the surface of your skin and his.

tugging his maroon hair, and teasing the back of his neck. small grunts came from both of you.

pulling away, to catch your breath. he looked pretty, prettier than before.

leaning in once more, he wanted to taste you now that he was intoxicated in the poison of you.

the door clicked, but you nor sae didn't seem to take notice. it was only untill a small cough erupted from the frame of the door.

oops. well, i guess the leather belt was always going to be the denouement, regardless what path you took.

sitting next to your best friend — in completely silence, yet accompanied by the silence filled with warmth. the lunch bell was bound to ring just in a few minutes or so. he didn't want to take his hand out of the locks of your hair though.

finding serenity in the way you rest so peacefully in your seat, in your own little word — he wonders if he ever existed with you in that little bubble of yours.

the teacher didn't seem to care whether or not you were listening, but you were. (yoichi would get mad if you began flunking your classes 'cause of your carefree attitude when it came to academics.)

but, he didn't really have a say on the topic considering how he himself has had his own problems regarding school. more specifically his trouble with passing assignments due the date.

the bell rang in his ear, effectively ending the river of thoughts flooding his mind. and pushing you out of your reverie.

"n/n?" isagi's voice called out ever so delicately, as if he was tending to a flower. — you never liked it. he knew that it made you feel far too vulnerable for your comfort, but he still does it. why? cause he wants you to trust him. trust him enough to have you lend your heart to him; for he would care for you until you bloomed in the warmth of the sun.

"hm?"

"did you bring your lunch?"

"no, 'was planning to buy from the cafeteria."

a frown etched onto his lips. you never went to the cafeteria, because you complained that the noise brothered you a ton. plus, he was hoping that today would be a day for just you and him, under a tree secluded from crowds. a spot just for the two of you.

he didn't wanna go somewhere you weren't fond of. (luckily for him, you were fond of the place just if he was with you.)

"what're you gonna get?"

"apple cider andd..uhh. probably just some melon bread. 'wanna come with?"

"yeah. of course!" and something you were exceptionally fond of was that boyish grin he wore. sometimes you just wished that you could kiss him up on his lips, without the worry if he was going to hate you.

walking on the pavements leading towards the door of the cafeteria, you spotted a vending machine. oh, it also had your apple cider. you looked back at yoichi, he only flashed you a smile. only responding in a quick look away, digging into your bag you got a hold of your wallet.

inserting in the coin inside the slot, you successfully got your drink. with a hint of a smile, you clicked it open.

isagi never really understood your love for the beverage. all he knew was that you liked it. and so, he liked it. with that information alone, if he could he would buy you a box of apple cider.

pressing the cold metal can up to your lips, you drank only some of the drink. swirling the remaining in your hand. looking to your side, yoichi was looking at the drink. (he was actually looking at you, but noone has to know)

"you want?"

and now, being the gentleman that he is, he couldn't just deny you like that now, could he?

with a nod he took the can you handed to him. he gulped down the liquid. the sweet taste turning into a tangy flavor. he didn't like it, but you looked so happy. he figured that it was all worth it he got to see your sweet smile, directed to noone else but him.

interlacing your hands together, you snatched back the drink from his hands — you were so close to him. that was all he could think about.

both of you laughed, for whatever reason. really. there wasn't a reason to, but you just did. and oh how he loved your the sound of happiness coming from you.

"hey, we just kissed."

"oh, just shut up, you idiot." with a fond tone he chuckled. this was the side you liked. his feisty side.

i really realize how sae and aiku are alike: both dreams of becoming the best striker broken. sae, during the years of spain, likely realizing his ability as a striker isn't on par witht the other world-class strikers. and aiku, realizing how they were being molded as the same way to become a striker with similar playstyles with no where for HIM to shine.

except sae becomes a midfielder, then wanting his brother to become the best striker (maybe) and aiku becomes a defender, waiting for the perfect moment to help THE striker shine.

Ruby Rose and Michael Kaiser: Two Growing Roses

I don't know about you but Kaiser shares things in common with Ruby and in a way Kaiser is what Ruby would have been if she hadn't received love from her family and friends in her life.

I'm quite aware that many think that Ruby is more like Kunigami and Kaiser is more like Mercury and Cinder but as I watched their arcs I couldn't help but notice how they are more similar than it seems and that's because Ruby and Kaiser are the same person under different circumstances.

To begin with, Ruby and Kaiser's struggle is rooted in their respective relationships with their families. To begin with, they had to deal with enormous pain at a very young age caused by the disappearance of their mothers:

On the one hand Ruby was raised in an unstable family environment where her mother went on a mission and never returned which caused her family to break down: her father Tai was consumed by depression, Yang had to be a surrogate mother for Ruby although she was also a girl who suffers from the abandonment of Raven, and Qrow, despite being the most stable figure for Ruby, he already had a history of having a semblance of bad luck that he cannot control and that he comes from a family of bandits but Summer's disappearance was the straw that broke the camel's back and he ended up sinking into alcoholism but despite everything all of them continued to love Ruby and tried to do everything possible to stay together as a family.

On the other hand, Kaiser grew up in a completely broken family: his father was a film director and his mother was a famous actress, they both fell in love and Kaiser was born as a result of that relationship, but his mother abandons them to continue with her acting career and his father is so submerged by pain to the point that he becomes an alcoholic, loses his prestige as a director and vents all his anger and pain on his son to the point of telling him that himself (Kaiser's father) and Kaiser's mother are worth less but that Kaiser doesn't even have value.

Both situations are quite different but the effect it caused on both is practically the same: Ruby and Kaiser see themselves as a burden and want to compensate their existence by being special.

Ruby witnesses her suffering from the loss of her mother, which is why she ends up seeing herself as a burden and wanting to be a copy of her mother, not only because she admires her and wants to emulate her to feel that somehow Summer still alive, but she also empathizes with her family and wants to ease the pain they have from losing Summer.

Kaiser sees himself as less than human and witnessing violence and insults throughout his childhood which makes him unable Kaiser is unable to empathize with others, interacts with people through violenceand ends up believing that in order to feel that he is valuable and not a burden he has to take away the value of others.

Even the mere fact that they both look like their mothers only makes them both view their own existence as less: Ruby feels like she has to be Summer's copy to make up for her lack but knows she can never replace her. Because of the way Kaiser's father treated him, Kaiser subconsciously internalizes that he can never be a human (in other words he can never make up for his mother's absence or be loved by his father) because to his own father Kaiser is worth less than himself (Kaiser's father) and his mother (and there are even indications that Kaiser's father probably hated him because of the resemblance Kaiser has to his mother and that made him remember her and increased his pain for abandoning him after having Kaiser).

They have rose motifs and the reason is because of their mothers: Summer left her rose emblem as a symbol of love for her daughters, Kaiser's mother abandoned him and his father and the only thing she left behind was a blue rose that Kaiser's father keeps it as a souvenir of her, becoming a reminder of lack of love.

As I said before, Ruby and Kaiser have rose motifs only that Ruby's motifs focus on the petals and Kaiser's motifs focus on the thorns, this shows that despite being opposites they still have similarities between them just like the petals and thorns are different parts of the rose but they are still parts of the same flower.

Also the fact that their rose motifs are different is because Ruby received love which makes her develop kindness while Kaiser only received hate which makes him develop his malice. This shaped the way they both seek to compensate for their existence:

Ruby compensate her existence by being the huntress who helps and protects everyone with her kindness.

Kaiser compensate his existence by being a striker who crushes his enemies on the field with his malice.

The way in which they both want to compensate or give meaning to their existence is through something that they were passionate about since their childhood: Ruby always listened to fairy tales, stories of Summer and the stories of other hunters in general and the only good thing that Kaiser had in his childhood was his soccer ball that bought himself.

Ruby and Kaiser get their chance to continue their quest to compensate for their existence after they got into trouble and they are detained for that: Ruby stopping Roman from robbing a dust store and Glynda helps her but immediately afterwards takes her to an interrogation room for acting without being a licensed hunter and Kaiser being framed for a crime he didn't commit, beating his father for trying to protect his precious soccer ball and the police and being arrested for it.

After Ruby and Kaiser are detained, an adult (Ozpin/Ray Dark) comes to recruit them when they realizes that they have talent for their respective areas (huntress and silver eyed warrior/footballer and striker). Ruby and Kaiser take the opportunity and join them and although at first they have trouble adapting to their teammates, they eventually manage to become outstanding huntress/footballer who manage to inspire them. Only while Ruby inspires them with her skill as a leader and her optimism, Kaiser does so through his skill as a striker and manipulation.

Part of the reason they have managed to be so prominent in their respective fields is because they have proven capable of being resourceful and cunning, even more than people give them credit for: Ruby is always seen as a naive and enthusiastic girl, but she has managed to make her enemies lower their guard and attack them when they least expect it and Kaiser not only manipulates people off the field, but is able to think and create solid plays when playing his matches.

However, Ruby and Kaiser share their obsession with being the best in their respective areas to the point of becoming symbols because that way they don't have to deal with their trauma and even refuse to talk about it with those closest to them. Ruby is so busy saving others that she doesn't have time to think about her own trauma, Kaiser takes too much delight in being the best striker on his team that he pushes aside any thoughts about his own trauma. Neither of them thinks about it because both Ruby and Kaiser see themselves as worthless to the point that not only do they feel they have to prove that they are not a burden, but they both believe that their own traumas are not important because Ruby and Kaiser deep down doesn't believe that themselves are important.

Ruby and Kaiser have a belief in “making the impossible happen”, Ruby really believes that she should keep fighting even if winning is impossible, she believes that she and her friends can stop Salem and change Remnant for the better, Kaiser really believes that if he was able to escape from his abusive home that seemed impossible, he can achieve anything he sets his mind to. However, Ruby and Kaiser take this belief to extremes due to their respective traumas, which prevents them from having true growth: Ruby truly believes that she has the weight of the world on her shoulders and that she has to solve everyone's problems, Kaiser never believed in himself to the point that he needs to feel that others are inferior to him in order to feel special.

All of the above makes both characters want to become symbols (after all there is nothing better to represent the impossible than a symbol), only they don't understand that being symbols isn't about Ruby redeeming the world with her hope or Kaiser destroying the hope of others; it's about Ruby and Kaiser learning to live in a world that wants to crush hope with their hope still intact.

Ruby and Kaiser believe that symbols are loved by everyone and that symbols don't feel pain but always move forward but Ruby and Kaiser forget that they are still human so seeing themselves as symbols that don't feel pain is not a healthy coping mechanism and as their respective stories progress these coping mechanisms stop being viable and they are forced to take the first step to grow which is to accept their humanity (accept their trauma to be able to face it, accept that they are humans who suffer and they fail like anyone else but don't let themselves be defined by said suffering or failures, be more independent, trust others more and ask for their help, etc.) because if they don't do so they will not advance.

On the other hand, Kaiser is so focused on crushing his opponents with his thorned goals that he doesn't realize that he could become crushed by his own thorns.

But part of those first steps that they need to take to begin to evolve begin with a process of destruction

and rebirth.

Part of that rebirth is that both have to redefine the meaning of their rose motifs: Ruby and Kaiser must convert the meaning of the rose (a mother's promise/a mother's abandonment, being in the end a reminder of the pain left by the departures of both women in the lives of Ruby and Kaiser) and give them a new meaning, converting them from the symbol of their mothers to their own symbols, the roses go from being a symbol of loss to a symbol of hope. Ruby transforms her mother's rose symbol into a symbol of “achieving the impossible” not only for her family, friends and the people of Remnant but also for herself by inspiring everyone to have hope, Kaiser is finally able to stand up, regain his hope and turn the game in his favor with his “Impact Kaiser Magnum” move, a move that was considered impossible in the circumstances in which he found himself.

Ruby Rose stops being Summer Rose 2.0, remembers who she is and takes the first steps to recognize herself as her own person, Kaiser goes from being the prodigy of Bastard Munchen, remembers who he was and that drives him to take the first steps to define himself not because of his status but as his own person.

Curiously, both had to reconnect with their inner child in order to move forward and take these first steps towards their evolution: Ruby connects with Little (who represents her inner child) who is vital for her development in volume 9, Kaiser remembers his self as a child and this becomes key to his growth in the match against PXG.

And even both of them have a rivalry with someone who are considered high-level strategists who have enormous resentment towards our roses for different reasons:

Although Isagi has more valid reasons for being upset with Kaiser than Cinder being upset with Ruby but that still doesn't take away from the fact that part of the reason Ruby and Kaiser go through their breakdowns and development arcs is because of the actions of Cinder and Isagi.

Cinder hates Ruby for hurting her with her silver eyes (optimism), but I'm sure that later Ruby along with other characters will save and inspire Cinder to change.

Isagi on the other hand clearly hates Kaiser for the way he treats him (malice) but also sees Kaiser as the type of soccer player he aspires to be and is inspired by his plays to improve his own.

Our roses' journey is not over yet, but considering how their arcs are similar despite their differences, I am excited to see how they will end and I am very sure that there will be more similarities and contrast between the two.

Ruby Rose and Michael Kaiser: Two Growing Roses

I don't know about you but Kaiser shares things in common with Ruby and in a way Kaiser is what Ruby would have been if she hadn't received love from her family and friends in her life.

I'm quite aware that many think that Ruby is more like Kunigami and Kaiser is more like Mercury and Cinder but as I watched their arcs I couldn't help but notice how they are more similar than it seems and that's because Ruby and Kaiser are the same person under different circumstances.

To begin with, Ruby and Kaiser's struggle is rooted in their respective relationships with their families. To begin with, they had to deal with enormous pain at a very young age caused by the disappearance of their mothers:

On the one hand Ruby was raised in an unstable family environment where her mother went on a mission and never returned which caused her family to break down: her father Tai was consumed by depression, Yang had to be a surrogate mother for Ruby although she was also a girl who suffers from the abandonment of Raven, and Qrow, despite being the most stable figure for Ruby, he already had a history of having a semblance of bad luck that he cannot control and that he comes from a family of bandits but Summer's disappearance was the straw that broke the camel's back and he ended up sinking into alcoholism but despite everything all of them continued to love Ruby and tried to do everything possible to stay together as a family.

On the other hand, Kaiser grew up in a completely broken family: his father was a film director and his mother was a famous actress, they both fell in love and Kaiser was born as a result of that relationship, but his mother abandons them to continue with her acting career and his father is so submerged by pain to the point that he becomes an alcoholic, loses his prestige as a director and vents all his anger and pain on his son to the point of telling him that himself (Kaiser's father) and Kaiser's mother are worth less but that Kaiser doesn't even have value.

Both situations are quite different but the effect it caused on both is practically the same: Ruby and Kaiser see themselves as a burden and want to compensate their existence by being special.

Ruby witnesses her suffering from the loss of her mother, which is why she ends up seeing herself as a burden and wanting to be a copy of her mother, not only because she admires her and wants to emulate her to feel that somehow Summer still alive, but she also empathizes with her family and wants to ease the pain they have from losing Summer.

Kaiser sees himself as less than human and witnessing violence and insults throughout his childhood which makes him unable Kaiser is unable to empathize with others, interacts with people through violenceand ends up believing that in order to feel that he is valuable and not a burden he has to take away the value of others.

Even the mere fact that they both look like their mothers only makes them both view their own existence as less: Ruby feels like she has to be Summer's copy to make up for her lack but knows she can never replace her. Because of the way Kaiser's father treated him, Kaiser subconsciously internalizes that he can never be a human (in other words he can never make up for his mother's absence or be loved by his father) because to his own father Kaiser is worth less than himself (Kaiser's father) and his mother (and there are even indications that Kaiser's father probably hated him because of the resemblance Kaiser has to his mother and that made him remember her and increased his pain for abandoning him after having Kaiser).

They have rose motifs and the reason is because of their mothers: Summer left her rose emblem as a symbol of love for her daughters, Kaiser's mother abandoned him and his father and the only thing she left behind was a blue rose that Kaiser's father keeps it as a souvenir of her, becoming a reminder of lack of love.

As I said before, Ruby and Kaiser have rose motifs only that Ruby's motifs focus on the petals and Kaiser's motifs focus on the thorns, this shows that despite being opposites they still have similarities between them just like the petals and thorns are different parts of the rose but they are still parts of the same flower.

Also the fact that their rose motifs are different is because Ruby received love which makes her develop kindness while Kaiser only received hate which makes him develop his malice. This shaped the way they both seek to compensate for their existence:

Ruby compensate her existence by being the huntress who helps and protects everyone with her kindness.

Kaiser compensate his existence by being a striker who crushes his enemies on the field with his malice.

The way in which they both want to compensate or give meaning to their existence is through something that they were passionate about since their childhood: Ruby always listened to fairy tales, stories of Summer and the stories of other hunters in general and the only good thing that Kaiser had in his childhood was his soccer ball that bought himself.

Ruby and Kaiser get their chance to continue their quest to compensate for their existence after they got into trouble and they are detained for that: Ruby stopping Roman from robbing a dust store and Glynda helps her but immediately afterwards takes her to an interrogation room for acting without being a licensed hunter and Kaiser being framed for a crime he didn't commit, beating his father for trying to protect his precious soccer ball and the police and being arrested for it.

After Ruby and Kaiser are detained, an adult (Ozpin/Ray Dark) comes to recruit them when they realizes that they have talent for their respective areas (huntress and silver eyed warrior/footballer and striker). Ruby and Kaiser take the opportunity and join them and although at first they have trouble adapting to their teammates, they eventually manage to become outstanding huntress/footballer who manage to inspire them. Only while Ruby inspires them with her skill as a leader and her optimism, Kaiser does so through his skill as a striker and manipulation.

Part of the reason they have managed to be so prominent in their respective fields is because they have proven capable of being resourceful and cunning, even more than people give them credit for: Ruby is always seen as a naive and enthusiastic girl, but she has managed to make her enemies lower their guard and attack them when they least expect it and Kaiser not only manipulates people off the field, but is able to think and create solid plays when playing his matches.

However, Ruby and Kaiser share their obsession with being the best in their respective areas to the point of becoming symbols because that way they don't have to deal with their trauma and even refuse to talk about it with those closest to them. Ruby is so busy saving others that she doesn't have time to think about her own trauma, Kaiser takes too much delight in being the best striker on his team that he pushes aside any thoughts about his own trauma. Neither of them thinks about it because both Ruby and Kaiser see themselves as worthless to the point that not only do they feel they have to prove that they are not a burden, but they both believe that their own traumas are not important because Ruby and Kaiser deep down doesn't believe that themselves are important.

Ruby and Kaiser have a belief in “making the impossible happen”, Ruby really believes that she should keep fighting even if winning is impossible, she believes that she and her friends can stop Salem and change Remnant for the better, Kaiser really believes that if he was able to escape from his abusive home that seemed impossible, he can achieve anything he sets his mind to. However, Ruby and Kaiser take this belief to extremes due to their respective traumas, which prevents them from having true growth: Ruby truly believes that she has the weight of the world on her shoulders and that she has to solve everyone's problems, Kaiser never believed in himself to the point that he needs to feel that others are inferior to him in order to feel special.

All of the above makes both characters want to become symbols (after all there is nothing better to represent the impossible than a symbol), only they don't understand that being symbols isn't about Ruby redeeming the world with her hope or Kaiser destroying the hope of others; it's about Ruby and Kaiser learning to live in a world that wants to crush hope with their hope still intact.

Ruby and Kaiser believe that symbols are loved by everyone and that symbols don't feel pain but always move forward but Ruby and Kaiser forget that they are still human so seeing themselves as symbols that don't feel pain is not a healthy coping mechanism and as their respective stories progress these coping mechanisms stop being viable and they are forced to take the first step to grow which is to accept their humanity (accept their trauma to be able to face it, accept that they are humans who suffer and they fail like anyone else but don't let themselves be defined by said suffering or failures, be more independent, trust others more and ask for their help, etc.) because if they don't do so they will not advance.
