Linux isn't really an alternative if it's what the problem is based on
Computers in schools used to be in a seperate computer lab room running windows
If you wanted you could break it or even write .swf and .bat
and you HAD to have used the OS's basic features if you even wanted games
There were so few web apps then, so you had to know how to save and open files
There were classes on how to use a computer
now we have laptops that are so locked down all you can do is browse the web
(the fact we could get here is the fault of managed systems like linux btw)
Computer skills are now "how can i play games/watch movies without the web filters blocking me"
And that's not good, that sounds dystopian
"at least we'se protecting kids from porn"
Yeah, keep telling yourself that, but that kid has a cell phone, and those web filters are not great at their job

Yeah, and that's because Google is bribing the school with these low prices so that these kids will buy a Chromebook as adults
That sounds like a conspiracy, and it almost is, but I was buying a laptop for my sister, and we were heavily considering a Chromebook
i don't see a conclusion or solution, but let's hope this doesn't/hasn't cause/caused any Major Issues™

We need to lay more blame for "Kids don't know how computers work" at the feet of the people responsible: Google.
Google set out about a decade ago to push their (relatively unpopular) chromebooks by supplying them below-cost to schools for students, explicitly marketing them as being easy to restrict to certain activities, and in the offing, kids have now grown up in walled gardens, on glorified tablets that are designed to monetize and restrict every movement to maximize profit for one of the biggest companies in the world.
Tech literacy didn't mysteriously vanish, it was fucking murdered for profit.
