Most people forget or ignore Duke Thomas, when they talk about the batfamily. And even the ones who include him say that he is the 'normal' one. Some people argue with that, and say that Duke is like the rest of the batkids with the example of him jumping out of a moving car and into a bridge.
Duke is way more than that. So, I complied a list of facts and feats of Duke Thomas. This will most likely be multiple parts.
Duke swear a lot.
Has a record of getting kicked out of schools.
Knew Leslie Thompkins way before he met the batfamily. She is also the one who found him foster homes.
His parents are jokerized, that's why he is put to foster homes. He also takes care of them in the mental hospital.
He doesn't trust the police.
He is very sarcastic. Especially to the cops.
He jumped out of a moving police car and through a bridge. The reason why he was arrested is because he had wore red shoes. In those times, vigilantism was very illegal and appearently red was the symbol of Robin.
One time, Bruce got amnesia. And Duke, to make him remember, pulled him and himself onto a railway and did not move even when he saw a train coming. Thankfully, Bruce snapped out and pulled them of the rails.
His mom used to call him Babybird.
Some villains nicknamed him as Babybat.
He understands Joker in a way Bruce never did.
He doesn't see himself apart of the Batfamily.
His powers are: He can technically see peoples weak parts through how much power they concentrate to them. He can see glimpses of future, rewind the present time like a video. He has increased healing, super fast reflexes. He can see particles in substences. He can literally see light. He also has a bit of telepathic powers. He can speak and be seen on different frequencies, so he can be invisible or speak in a tone that no one would understand. Invisibility.
To add to it, he did not have shadow powers from birth. A supervillain, kind of mutated his genes so that he could control the darkness.
His mother had powers.
First time he went out as Signal, people hated him.
He was The Signal, way before discovering his powers. He discovered his powers when his father tried to recruit him to his endeavours.
His father is a supervillain named Gnomon, and he has the same powers as Duke. Gnomon also had a picture of child Duke on his desk.
Bruce gifted him his own base of operation, called The Hatch.
Bruce called him a gift to the city.
He is good with Damian.

Duke: Fuck that, I’m not going over there until he calls me my name.
Damian: It could be life or death.
Duke: He’s literally just reading a newspaper? There’s no way it’s life or death.
Bruce, again: Robin!
Duke: He’s not even looking up from his newspaper!
Dick: Yeah he does that… it sucks but—
Duke: Fuck this I’m going on patrol. Bye Robins!
Damian: What if someone died. Would you just ignore—
*Duke Leaves*
Steph: Damn I like this kid.

Brucie Wayne has a bedazzled phone case.
One so sparkly and shiny with so many charms and stickers and trinkets glued to it that he can't even fit it comfortably in his pocket and must therefore carry it around.
Whenever he's asked, he admits that he allows his kids to decorate it for him, and then is able to point out what came from who.
Ballet slippers from Cass's first dance lesson.
An elephant from that time he took Dick to the zoo.
Glitter because Steph and Jason were unattended and bored.
Dog and turkey charms because Damian, despite rolling his eyes whenever his siblings added to their fathers collection, refused to be left out.
A rhinestone crown with 'Yas Queen' under it that had appeared one day. It had taken a week to figure out that it had come from Duke.
I love them^^ I feel like dick would do what i do irl and not even realize i’ve started lying untill i’ve already done it, I also got a thought in my head of how easy it would be for him to lie to everyone bc so many people trust him so easily and he has *so* much training that he must’ve learned to control his heartbeat and how to lie at some point. I love the idea of dick being kinda like a pathological liar sometimes bc it just makes sense like look at all the things no one knows about him! there’s no way none of that was just never brought up in a conversation at some point

Out of the Batfam, Jason is one of the most atrocious liars. He can make it work when he absolutely has to, but usually I think whenever he lies he does with little motivation and with emphasis on irony to make it funny for himself. In comparison Dick is a phenomenal liar and can sell outrage so well before hanging up and reverting to normal that Jason sprays him with holy water and never believes a word out of his mouth.

so on and forth. Not even Bruce or Alfred are spared. Duke won't know proportional response if it hit him in the face. Regularly, daytime villains send batman complaint letters (!!!) about the signal, because damnit they're just robbing banks, no need to bring up their mommy issues into it??? with Duke, there is no passive there is only aggressive. You won't think it, looking into his warm brown eyes and his lovely, easy smile. but you will know it. by god, if you start shit, you will know it.

Dick and Duke bonding over making up the most arduous and evil game of DnD and blackmailing every vigilante in Gotham and Alfred to join in. Also them bonding over having a normal and sane one with their friends and introducing them to the others’ friend group. Bonus points if it’s how Duke meets the fab five.
Also in the same vein, Jason and Damian bonding over plays. Bonus points if Damian slaps Jason with his copy of Death of a Salesman yelling that Jason and Bruce are the same story.
YES PLEASE THIS^ PLEASEEEEEE and also like I’ve seen in another post the second he disagrees with someone or someone says something even slightly insulting hed go ham on them with insults and sass that cut deep and bring up enough trauma to make a normal person cry..and then he just walks away and makes cookies with Alfred’s recipe and then just doesn’t share with whoever’s made him upset including the people that agreed with that person if there is any, why? Bc he’d be petty as hell.

The idea that Duke is the super well-behaved and rule-following kid is really funny to me cause like, have you read Robin War? His bit in that book opens with him being arrested for wearing red shoes (long story, just know he was also wearing a red hoodie that apparently wasn't a problem) and he explains step by step to the cop exactly how he plans on escaping before executing that escape perfectly by jumping off a bridge. He fought an armored Jim Gordon, the Court of Owls, and Damian who had been manipulated into joining the Court. Duke managed to talk Damian down while getting his ass kicked and then kinda befriended the kid after. He also has defied Batman several times and was proven to be right. All with a healthy dose of sass.
But also I do like lil rule-following sweetheart Duke so I have a proposal. Duke Thomas who follows the rules he agrees with. Most of the time, he's the sweet little angel in the manor. He's polite, he's well-mannered, he's kind, and he does what he's told. However that's only because everything aligns with what he believes to be the right path. The moment Bruce makes a bad call or order, Duke takes it to 11 and becomes more impossible to order around than Jason. Chaotic Good Duke.

The Batkids are totally the sort that would start playing with a Ouija board in some abandoned warehouse post patrol or even in their haunted house base of operations and then scream in a panic/collapse/grab onto the nearest sibling because the board just informed them a spirit was present before Bruce silently turned up out of the shadows.
For his part Bruce's very alarmed because he wanted to ask if they wanted him to go pick up some pizza or something. Duke can't stop laughing because he's been manipulating shadows to freak them out and was fully aware that Bruce was about to turn up.

I want the angst of B having to come to terms that he doesn't know ANY of his kids not anymore at least and maybe never and the fact his kids are just- used to it?
Visiting Dicks apartment, he finds a picture of him smiling while surrounded by a bunch of little kids in spandax uniforms. Turns out he'd been a gymnastics instructor for about four years now and his most recent team had everyone qualify for state. (Bruce didn't even know he still practiced)
Jason stopped accepting Wednesday night patrols, but when he looked into it he found out that was the night he went to DND nights with his roommates every week. The roommates he met last semester after he decided to go to college and get an english major. (Bruce didn't even know he had applied)
Checking the library he found a small pedastal plague put up by Alfred displaying just one book. It said Cass was the author. Apparently she had gotten super into writing and published a book talking about language deprivation and lack of accomidation for deaf/hoh children born to hearing families. She had a book signing last month, Alfred had gone and grabbed this copy now on display (Bruce didn't even know she liked to write)
Tim finished a case early and let it slip he needed to sign off early to "meet up with his boyfriends" and hung up before Bruce could process. It only took a small glance at his middle child's latest social media post to see him alongside Superboy (what was his name?) and a blonde boy he didn't recognize. Both were leaned in to kiss his cheek and the caption said "Happy 3rd anniversary!!" (Bruce didn't even know he was interested in boys)
Steph's birthday came around and Bruce got her a new account and shoved a couple thousand for her to buy whatever she wanted. But he quickly noticed a pattern of everyone getting her- cat supplies? Apparently She had adopted a cat about a month ago to celebrate her new apartment, Mister Mystery was his name, and she had asked everyone for supplies instead of other gifts. (Bruce didn't even know she had moved)
He decided on some impromptu father-son bonding and tries to track down his youngest. But Damian is nowhere to be found. He gets pretty close to calling an emergency meeting but the moment he messages Oracle she reminds him Damian is in Chicago. Damian had won an art competition at school and his piece qualified for a gallery spot. The entire family had gone days ago and he was due back the next day. (Bruce didn't even know he cared about art)
Then Duke- his youngest in terms of time spent. But one he had grown fond of just as fast as the others. Especially working the day shift the time they spent was limited. Bruce got them both lunch, but it wasn't until halfway through eating that Duke had turned to him with panicked eyes and asked if the stew had shellfish. Duke had a severe allergy, thankfully Jason had been just up the street and had an epi-pen ready before they took him to Leslies. (Bruce didnt even know he had any allergies, let alone one so severe)
The worst part? There was no blow up. His kids didn't take his idiocracy as a personal insult or even raise a fight. They just rolled their eyes and moved on. As everyone crowded in the room, surrounding Dukes bedside he could hear Barbras voice. "Its not your fault, Batman may be omnipotent, but Bruce doesn't know anything really"
He wasnt meant to overhear or maybe he was, Oracle had always been petty But he couldn't refute it.
"But you have us"
Well- thats just it wasnt it? Even when Bruce was absent- his kids had each other. But was that ever meant to be enough?
