So, while I was looking up information about certain minerals that form certain popular gemstones (such as beryl, which includes aquamarine, heliodor, and emerald), I learned about trapiche emeralds. They're a rare type of emerald that is characterized by inclusions (foreign minerals or other things inside the gem) in a radial pattern, like the spokes of a wheel. The pattern is fixed, unlike the pattern (asterism) in a star sapphire, which seems to change with the position of the gem. However, you may sometimes find trapiche stones that have a cat's-eye effect (chatoyancy) in some of the radial segments, which looks super nifty.

There are other gemstones that sometimes show the trapiche effect: sapphire (and ruby), tourmaline, and quartz, for example. The process that forms trapiche crystals isn't clearly understood, but the results can be very cool.

The International Gem Society had more info and more pictures, if you're curious.

Ne tuhaf. aynı gökyüzüne bakıyor ve aynı havayı soluyoruz iki ayrı şehirde ama. hiçbir şey bizden yana değil işte..

Maybe a dream will pass through us…

A lot of times, when people talk about mad scientists, they mean medical or biology or chemistry, sometimes you'll have a physicist or mathematician or even an engineer... But let's not forget about the hard working mad science geologists who help people scout out and build their "evil lair in a volcano" while furthering their own plot to rid the world of their competition by using their own egos against them. Meanwhile they're bending the secrets of the earth to their will, making new and strange crystalline mineral structures, and dialing in the frequency of their earthquake generators to only destroy what they're aiming at. They deserve attention too!

reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics

This because I love crystals and I believe pretty rocks are pretty rocks (and they’re even prettier when created/found ethically)

Weird peeve time. Calling lab grown gemstones ā€œfakeā€ is stupid because it’s the same shit just not formed naturally. An artificially grown diamond is the same shit as a natural diamond it is the exact same material bro it’s all fuckign carbon

i know several geologists. They do. It's actually a reward from their professor that they get to lick special rocks if they do well
