Tom Hardy takes the lead in this reboot of the popular post-apocalyptic Mad Max franchise.

Although a modestly budgeted Australian production, the original Mad Max (George Miller, 1979) was an enormous box office success and shot star Mel Gibson to international stardom. Mad Max: Fury Road is once again directed by the original series' co-writer and co-creator George Miller.

The movie opens in a futuristic post-apocalyptic wasteland ruled by masked bad dude Immortan Joe (Hugh Keayes-Byrne). Captured by Joe's army and used as a 'bloodbag' by sickly soldier Nux (Brendan McCarthy), our hero Max soon finds himself adorning the hood of Nux's gasoline guzzling vehicle. Nux is in pursuit of Imperator Furiosa who is fleeing Joe with five of his wives in tow, one of whom is heavily pregnant. After some initial misunderstandings(!) Max and Furiosa soon team up to whoop Joe's ass. Which they do in spectacular fashion!

Mad is right; this movie is a bit bonkers! It is also nonstop adrenaline, with breathtaking action set pieces. The pace barely lets up for a second, and while occasionally confusing, it is never dull!

It is also visually stunning; from special effect sets to costumes to John Seale's exquisite cinematography Mad Max: Fury Road has to be one of the best looking blockbusters out there.

It is quite violent and occasionally grizzly. But the movie's overtly stylised and somewhat surreal atmosphere made the violent scenes much more palatable, even to a sensitive soul like me.

Tom Hardy is great in the lead, and makes for a surprisingly sympathetic Max. As the kick-butt Imperator Furiosa, Charlize Theron is Hardy's equal in the action stakes and, refreshingly, of equal importance to the narrative. This lends the movie a welcome feminist angle relatively rare in mainstream action films.

While I found the narrative in Fury Road a little confusing I was ultimately won over by its bonkers charm! Action movies as artistic as this are rare beasts; Mad Max: Fury Road is therefore recommended viewing, even for those who are not especially fond of the genre.

"In any other movie those women would be background noise, showing up just to be menaced/sexually assaulted. ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ isn’t any other movie, and the Five Wives — Zoe Kravitz, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, Abbey Lee, and Courtney Eaton — each get their own character arcs and moments, and each react to their situation differently. Some fight, some cower, some want to return to the familiarity of their abuse, but all react as humans, not as plot devices. “We Are Not Things,” they write on the wall of their chamber before escaping. Yet if “Fury Road” doesn’t deliver as pure a hit of girl-power retribution as say, Quentin Tarantino’s “Death Proof,” it’s hard not to respect the dramatic stature with which Miller elevates his female characters; Huntington-Whiteley and Kravitz, in particular, embody the sort of quiet defiance that ensures these women, though victimized, are never reduced to mere victims."

It’s like ‘Grand Theft Auto’ revamped by Hieronymus Bosch, with a dab of Robert Rodríguez’s ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’... Dialogue is at a minimum, and when Max says anything it is usually preceded by an eccentric rumbling, mumbling mmmm sound, like a macho Mr. Bean. He is impassive, to say the least: the nearest Tom Hardy’s Max comes to an emotional outburst is when Splendid does something very brave while hanging on to the side of the truck. Max gives her a little smile and boyish thumbs-up. It’s the Mad Max equivalent of hugging her and declaiming: “Darling, your courage is magnificent.” And when Nux wishes to express defiance or euphoria, he sprays his mouth with silver-grey paint, to make his face look even more like a skull. That is pretty dysfunctional..."

"The first act of the film is where most of the money shots from the trailer come from, and we are clued in quickly to something rather shocking: Max isn’t the main character. Oh sure, he’s there in one form or another for the duration of the picture, but the primary action figure is Ms. Theron. Even when Max goes from a bystander to an aggressive participant, the focus remains on Theron’s would-be rescuer, and all of her charges are given agency and sympathy. You may have heard that George Miller brought in ‘Vagina Monologues’ author Eve Ensler to consult on the film and wow does it show. ‘Fury Road’ is not a film that just uses the notion of human sex slavery for topical seasoning and/or an excuse to show quivering young girls half-naked in shipping containers or cages. It is very much about the notion of a world that has ditched most of the remnants of so-called civilized society yet has kept the patriarchal system that keeps women under the thumb of arbitrarily designated male rulers and consigns them to be no more than (often unwilling) breeders. If you’ve read me for any length of time, you’ve heard me whine about the quantity and quality of female characters in mainstream motion pictures. ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ is everything I say I want."

"We spent a lot of time in DI (digital intermediate), and we had a very fine colorist, Eric Whipp. One thing I’ve noticed is that the default position for everyone is to de-saturate post-apocalyptic movies. There’s only two ways to go, make them black and white — the best version of this movie is black and white, but people reserve that for art movies now. The other version is to really go all-out on the color. The usual teal and orange thing? That’s all the colors we had to work with. The desert’s orange and the sky is teal, and we either could de-saturate it, or crank it up, to differentiate the movie. Plus, it can get really tiring watching this dull, de-saturated color, unless you go all the way out and make it black and white."

Personally, I think that the black-and-white version of Mad Max: Fury Road looks just as good as the hyper-saturated color version! And this one may be great for those people who have specific triggers involving super-colorful (and therefore, realistic) violent visuals like not standing the sight of gore, wounds, and red blood; sort of like how Quentin Tarantino did a black-and-white version for that ultra-violent and blood-soaked scene in Kill Bill, Vol 01 where The Bride fought off O-Ren Ishii’s private army in the House of Blue Leaves.

On June 17, 2015, an official comic prequel that tells the story of Imperator Furiosa and The Five Wives in the Citadel before the events of Fury Road will be released. The preview above reveals that prior to leading the supply run, Furiosa’s primary role as an Imperator seemed to be as the chief guard to the Wives held captive inside the Dome and had interactions with them before the great escape.

This is the second entry to the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel comic miniseries released by Vertigo following the first issue revolving around the characters of Nux and Immortan Joe. This issue is collaboratively written by George Miller, Nico Lathouris, and Mark Sexton with the cover art done by Tommy Lee Edwards and interior art done by Tristan Jones.

Coke And Cigarettes

"You're such a dumbass", George flicks your forehead as he watches you struggle to spark the flame on the lighter. He snatches it away.

Your pout does not go unnoticed, for he shoves a can of Coca Cola towards your mouth, basically forcing you to gulp its contents down. Rolling your eyes at the gesture, you drink it anyways. "Can't even use a lighter... you afraid of fire now?"

You shrug, carfeully watching him alight the cigarette, flame illuminating the gentle features of his face. "Your face is small," you mutter, mindlessly.

He turns towards you, exhaling smoke through his nostrils. "What?" George asks. "I said your dick is small," you huff, snuggling into the puffy jacket that you had decided to wear for this meeting with him.

He heartily laughs at your comment. "How do you know it's small if you've never seen it before, hmm?"

"I know a lot of things- WAIT, are you admitting that you're small?" Your eyes widen, staring at him in utter shock. He sucks into the cigarette, holding direct eye contact with you.

"Do you wanna see it?" George asks, in the most serious voice, making you suck in a breath. "W-what," a gasp leaves your mouth when he turns on the light of his balcony, extinguishing his joint, and starts unbuckling his belt, only to stop when he sees you staring with your mouth open.

"You're not telling me to stop huh? Thats new."

Another laugh rings in the air, and suddenly you want to punch him in his pretty face, make it bruise and bleed to the point that he becomes unrecognizable.

"Oh come on, I'm joking!" He smiles, confused as he tries to read the expression on your face. Leaning in closer to you, he srunches his brows. You flinch, back meeting the cold railings. George's eyes scan your face, and in the dim light of the small bulb on the ceiling, he catches the slight disapointment in your eyes.

His gasp is loud, a little too loud for this late hour. "No way! You... you actually wanted to see it?"

You sigh, pushing his chest, making him fall back towards his previous spot. "Can you get any louder?" A sip from the can is all you can muster into your stomach, that suddenly feels very queasy, bubbling away at the current situation.He sits and stares at you, a look of complete surprise on his face.

"Do you... get off from seeing dicks?"

"Shut up George"

You smile, eyes still not confident enough to look at him. But you already know how hard that idiot is smiling. The uneasy feeling doesn't go away, but you think he already knows, how long you've been in love with him.
