The War Boys seen in the film have also seen major changes from the original design concept; doing away with tribal tattoos, studded leather ensembles, and straggly strands of hair in favor of a look defined by distressed utilitarian pants and boots and shirtless upper bodies with their skin slathered in white paint/clay and sporting black grease around their eyes and foreheads, along with variations of grotesque body modifications.

Mad Max: Fury Road x Harry Potter Headcanons

Imperator Furiosa

Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor. Gryffindor alum. Also a legacy member of the Vuvalini Vixens, an international and award-winning all-female Quidditch team where her mother, Mary Jo Bassa, served as lead Chaser for two decades. She is very famous in the Wizarding world because she successfully defeated a very evil Dark Wizard named Immortan Joe when she encountered him during her gap year travels in the Wasteland where he controlled an army of deranged warlocks and established a very dangerous Death cult that preyed on virginal witches. However, it was in this famous battle that she also lost her left arm due to a very powerful Severing Curse that Immortan Joe aimed at her. Undeterred by her irreversible injury, she promptly fashioned herself a fully-functional mechanical arm that never fails to impress the kids at Hogwarts. She has a slight discomfort teaching classroom theory, but definitely shines when it comes to demonstrating the practical spells in her classes. She's considered as one of the more popular teachers among the students at Hogwarts, and is fair and objective when it comes to grading students. but has a zero-tolerance policy when she catches students bullying others, especially if the victims are girls.

Max Rockatansky

Transfiguration instructor. Slytherin alum. Several rumors surround Professor Rockatansky due to his very taciturn personality and tendency to avoid socializing with his students or colleagues outside of classes. Some say he's a werewolf, even though he's been spotted several times in public during full moon nights. Some say he works undercover for the Ministry of Magic as an Unspeakable, hence his secretive and isolated nature. But the most popular story surrounding his mystique (though still largely viewed as unproven hearsay) is that he went slightly mad from the heat after accidentally Apparating himself to the Australian Outback desert and was unable to get back home for more a month, thus earning him the nickname of "Mad Max" among the students, though they use it more as an affectionate term since the students respect and admire him despite his reserved nature. He's actually quite nice and engaging whenever he's teaching classes, and has been known to crack a smile or two (and delivering rather awkward thumbs-up gestures) whenever his students successfully perform rather complicated spellwork. And even though he and Professor Furiosa share a strictly professional working relationship, that has not stopped the student body of Hogwarts from making good-natured comments about them looking really cute together.

The Splendid Angharad

Seventh Year student. Head Girl. Gryffindor. Angharad is the leader of a popular all-girls clique in the school known simply as The Five. While most girls blessed with genetically good looks would be shallow and self-centered mean girls who make fun of other people, Angharad is actually a friendly and caring pureblood witch who is well-liked by most everyone in Hogwarts. She's a very vocal advocate for student rights, regardless of their Wizarding blood status, and takes her duties as the school's Head Girl very seriously. An unfortunate Potions accident during her Fourth Year has left part of her face and arms permanently covered in a webbed pattern of scars, but this physical deformity has not diminished her inner beauty and as a result, many of the underclassmen girls look up to her as a strong and aspirational figure for positive self-esteem because she refuses to hide her scars underneath glamour or concealment charms. Besides being one of Hogwarts’ top academic students, the school administration also approves of Angharad's many helpful initiatives she has enacted over the years like setting up tutoring sessions for students having difficulties with the curriculum and strengthening international academic relations with Beauxbatons and Durmstrang by establishing an annual cultural exchange program. Needless to say, there is no doubt as to why a lot of people often call her "Splendid".

Capable

Seventh Year student. Prefect. Gryffindor. Capable is considered as the second-in-command of the Five and is also Angharad's best friend since childhood. Living up to her name, Capable is highly skilled in the magical arts—with a natural affinity for Transfiguration and Astronomy—and is known to be exceptionally talented at fixing broken things without the use of magic since she grew up in a Muggle household where her parents work as service repair attendants. Because of this, she is the school's top student when it comes to Muggle Studies and she usually fields a lot of questions from curious pureblood students about how things work outside of the Wizarding world. Apart from her responsibilities as a Prefect, Capable is the president of several extracurricular clubs and is the go-to senior student chaperone whenever the Hogwarts underclassmen take regular field trips to the Muggle world. Although she’s not as sporty as Toast, Capable was the one who introduced, adapted, and popularized the concept of cheerleading for school Quidditch, and thus, all four Houses now have permanent Quidditch Cheerleading squads. She is also responsible for taking over Angharad's duties whenever her best friend is busy with other important engagements or is otherwise sick with illness. Despite being a good girl at heart, Capable is slightly prone to being attracted to guys with a bit of a bad boy streak in them.

The Dag

Sixth Year student. Slytherin. Out of the Five, the Dag has earned a reputation for being the most eccentric student in school despite her otherworldly good looks. Originally from Beauxbatons, she transferred to Hogwarts during her Third Year when she became good friends with Angharad while the latter was on a summer holiday in France with her parents. The Dag is fiercely proud of her Veela heritage (from her mother's side) although she largely feels she could do without the constant unwanted attention that boys with no sense of boundaries often place upon her due to her inherent allure. Both serene and cynical, the Dag is a fascinating amalgamation of personalities and often surprises people by doing things that are in contrast to her exterior beauty. Unlike many other girls in the school, the Dag is interested in the most esoteric of things, dresses in a very singular style, moves with a charming mixture of grace and awkwardness, and often speaks in strange turns of phrases that range from poetic (she often describes incoming trouble as "furious fixations") to head-scratchingly crude (she can deliver the harshest of insults in her own brand of slang). And apart from Divination, the Dag consistently gets Outstanding marks when it comes to Herbology, and she is usually found reading books about magical and Muggle plants by the greenhouses or at the edge of the Forbidden Forest whenever she likes to spend some time alone.

Toast the Knowing

Sixth Year student. Quidditch Team Seeker. Ravenclaw. Despite having a tough-as-nails personality indicative of a Gryffindor student, Toast is one of Ravenclaw's best assets and has earned her moniker of "The Knowing" for many reasons. Both book smart and street smart, Toast is a reliable source of information on various topics and the other members of the Five often seek her knowledge and input whenever they do group study sessions together. Outside of her impressive academic abilities, Toast is one of the most talented Seekers that Hogwarts has ever produced, and she hopes to one day join the Vuvalini Vixens as a first-string team player after she graduates since Professor Furiosa has confided to Toast that she will give the team her glowing recommendation. Should a career in professional Quidditch not be in the cards for her, Toast is ready to execute her backup career plan of becoming a top female wandmaker since it is very rare in the Wizarding world for witches to pursue wandmaking as a skilled profession. Despite her petite frame, Toast can handle student bullies twice her size with or without the use of her wand. While her social circle primarily consists of Quidditch boys from all four Hogwarts houses, Toast is still able to get in touch with her feminine side by spending quality girl time with the rest of the Five during weekends or regular trips to Hogsmeade.

Cheedo the Fragile

Fifth Year student. Hufflepuff. As the youngest of the Five, Cheedo is largely protected by the elder members of her clique since she gets a significant amount of (mostly unwarranted) attention from hormonal boys apart from The Dag. Though she was nicknamed "Fragile" during her early years in Hogwarts (she often cried a lot due to homesickness), Cheedo has considerably toughened up as she grew older and has been known to hold her own ground whenever her best friends aren't around; using her facade of fragility to her advantage whenever bullies try to pull a fast one on her. Boasting a formidable combination of brains and beauty, Cheedo has emerged as one of Hufflepuff's star students and is often credited for earning the most points for her House every year. And ever since Capable established Quidditch Cheerleading in Hogwarts, Cheedo has tried out for the Hufflepuff team and is on track to becoming the House’s squad captain when she ascends to her Seventh Year. She also often volunteers to be the head of any committee whenever Angharad announces plans to host fun events on the school's social calendar since this allows Cheedo to showcase her leadership abilities, take on more serious responsibilities outside of classes, and prove to herself and to others that her nickname does not define who she is as a person.

Nux

Seventh Year student. Quidditch Team Chaser. Slytherin. Known for being the fastest and the most dangerous broom rider in Hogwarts, Nux has also gained school notoriety since he was a transfer student from Durmstrang during his Fourth Year. Having entered the school midway through a typical Hogwarts student's academic tenure, Nux initially had a hard time fitting in with the rest of the student body until he showed up for the Slytherin Quidditch Team tryouts where he easily defeated the competition with his death-defying broom riding and Chasing skills. Since then, he has charmed most of the Hogwarts students with his impressive Quidditch talents (along with his rakish yet boyish good looks) and is largely credited for conceiving popular battle cries on the field which has evolved into now-legendary school catchphrases ("I live! I die! I live again!" and "Witness me!") that the Slytherin Quidditch Cheerleading squad loves to incorporate in their routines. Despite his knowledge and objectively keen interest in the Dark Arts due to being educated in Durmstrang, Nux has never once been inclined to use such negative forces in his magical studies or in everyday life. And while he does engage in typical shenanigans that is expected of mischievous adolescent boys like him, Nux has demonstrated remarkable restraint when it comes to improving his slightly mediocre grades and immature behavior considering that he hopes to catch the attention of a certain red-headed member of Hogwarts' most esteemed social group.

MAX ROCKATANSKY IS A SLYTHERIN. PERIOD.

So I wrote this headcanon post (which is getting a lot of traction lately) about Team War Rig of Mad Max: Fury Road as crossover characters in the Harry Potter universe and I wrote that Max Rockatansky is a Slytherin, but most everyone who’s been reblogging the post is saying he’s a Hufflepuff (with the rather superficial reasoning that he’s this overgrown feral puppy dog of sorts, which — okay — is actually true). Now, this bit confuses me because Max has largely exhibited actions in Fury Road that are indicative of a Slytherin than a Hufflepuff, which I present thus:

A key factor of being sorted into Slytherin is a person's blood purity, and this is taken very literally in Fury Road because Max is a "full life" with clean blood needed to energize the "half-life" War Boys. Therefore, it would make sense that Max in the HP universe would be a pureblood wizard because of his literally "pure" blood status.

Another important Slytherin trait is their strong sense of self-preservation, and this means that Slytherins tend to hesitate before acting in order to weigh all possible outcomes before deciding exactly what should be done. In the film, Max does start out only caring for himself as shown when he attempted to steal the War Rig from Furiosa and the Wives and even going as far to try and shoot off Nux's hand to free himself from the chain connecting him to the sickly War Boy had the rifle worked. But his sense of self-preservation has not diminished even after helping out Furiosa and the Wives take back the Citadel because it is in his very nature to fly solo.

Let's not forget that Salazar Slytherin prized potential Hogwarts entrants to possess cunning, determination, leadership qualities, and a "certain disregard for the rules"—all of which Max has showcased in Fury Road. He was smart enough to not underestimate Furiosa's capability as a toughened warrior despite her physical disability (cunning); he was highly driven to survive at all costs even if it meant teaming up with a group of people that clearly do not trust him at first sight (determination); he is a natural leader because he proposed a decent battle strategy to Furiosa and allowed her to make the call rather than forcing everyone else to follow his lead (leadership qualities); and he is also a person who chooses to march to the beat of his own drum by leaving the Citadel even though he knows he is welcome to stay ("a certain disregard for the rules").

And need I remind everyone that NOT ALL SLYTHERINS ARE EVIL?! Case in point: Severus Snape, who worked his whole life to redeem himself by swearing fealty to Dumbledore and helping to protect Harry Potter due to his inability to save his mother Lily from dying at the hands of Voldemort. In the same way Snape is forever haunted by Lily's death, so too is Max with his mental visions of all those people he couldn't save from his previous adventures before the events of Fury Road took place. And through his character development by the end of the film, he was able to redeem himself by not only saving Furiosa's life with his "pure blood", but also realizing that despite his internal flaws, he is still a good person at heart.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Max shouldn't be Sorted into Hufflepuff (given that he has also exhibited dedication, kindness, and fearlessness of toil — which are all central Hufflepuff traits), but I personally think that he's more of a Slytherin based on his characterization not just in Fury Road, but also in the past three films he was featured in. He's a damaged character who has suffered through so much in a very dangerous world, and in his own words, he was reduced to a single instinct which is to survive—and this in itself is the most Slytherin as you can get rather than being a Hufflepuff.

So yeah, everyone who agrees that Max is a Hufflepuff is free to think so, but you people cannot convince me otherwise that the Road Warrior is a hardcore Slytherin through and through.

If you think this iconic introduction of the Five Wives caters to the male gaze, then you seriously need to take a good, hard look at your totally sexist life and your chauvinistic choices. Absolutely nothing about this scene glorifies tits, ass, legs, or pussy in a manner intended to arouse a straight male viewer, so please sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up because your arguments are otherwise rendered invalid.

Max Rockatansky and Nux vs. Imperator Furiosa and the Five Wives

Things I Loved About This Scene:

Furiosa just fucking going for it against Max without the need to have her badass dieselpunk arm prosthetic. Mad respect to my fierce and flawless post-apocalyptic goddess and savior!

A temporarily unconscious Nux being tugged around like a poor little rag doll while the Furiosa and the Wives confront Max.

Obviously Angharad and Capable leading the charge by taking hold of the chains to get Max off from Furiosa. Yas queens!

Max on the defense by using the car door as a shield to block Furiosa's attacks and just sucker punch her on the face with it.

Nux finally waking up and just getting in on the fight action without a second of hesitation. That's the War Boy spirit!

I love how The Dag's body language suggests that she really wants to fight with the other Wives but because Cheedo is fearfully clinging on to her and pulling her back, she's torn between helping Furiosa and trying to get Cheedo to stay away because clearly she’s a beautiful cinnamon roll too good and too pure for this post-apocalyptic desert world.

I love that little bit where Max hisses at the Wives to get the fuck away from him because he really looks like a rabid dog barking at some poor innocent girls with a muzzle in that part.

The intensity in Max and Furiosa's eyes as they're both engaged in the fight is just so amazing to see.

Angharad, Capable, and Toast just dogpiling on Nux to wrestle the magazine of bullets from his clutches which results in Max falling down to give Furiosa the advantage.

The funny but great part where the Dag just jumps in and pulls on the chain connected to Max just emphasizes my image of Max as an oversized rabid dog that needs to be restrained.

Also, I am going to be so upset if this doesn’t get nominated (or even win) for the Best Fight category at next year’s MTV Movie Awards (even though I know that award show doesn’t mean shit for anything).

The Heroic But Tragic Death Of The Splendid Angharad

Things I Loved About This Scene (Even Though It Completely Killed Me Watching The End Of It):

The moment where Immortan Joe is about to shoot at Furiosa when all of a sudden, the backseat door flies open and OUT POPS ANGHARAD WHERE SHE USED HERSELF TO SHIELD HER SAVIOR FROM HER NASTY RAPIST. Swear to God, that was possibly the most metal thing I've ever seen a heavily pregnant woman do onscreen and it was such a glorious thing to watch!

For real, Angharad is literally almost suspended in midair to give Joe the most epic and defiant stare-down in cinematic history as she is held in relative safety by Capable's grip. You know this fierce and flawless desert queen was all like, "NOPE. NOT TODAY, SATAN!" Bonus "fuck yeah!" points for Capable and Toast giving equal amounts of death glares at Joe as well!

Loved that flash of complete powerlessness in Joe's shocked eyes when he saw Angharad risking her life and realizing that she really hated his fucking guts for even trying to get her and the other Wives back. Nothing has made me happier seeing this scene than a newly empowered woman taking control and using the very weakness of her vile captor to fully destroy his pathetic delusions and inflated ego.

Angharad be like "BYE FELICIA!" as the War Rig drove away and she was still hanging out the cabin to continue giving Joe her amazing death glare. YAS QUEEN! Also: amazing hairspiration moment! You can't deny that Angharad's hair looked absolutely on fucking point blowing around her face while she was staring down at Joe. Gorgeous honey blond girlfriend knows how to work her crowning glory!

As Joe was driving right next to the War Rig, the Five Wives just look at him with utter disdain (except for Cheedo who honestly looked like she was really scared). Loved the part where The Dag just hissed "Schlanger!" at Joe becuase let's be real here, he really fucking is one.

And let's not forget that it wasn't just Mom Furiosa that Angharad saved in this scene: she also saved Dad Max! Look at Angharad once again springing into action as she climbed out of the cabin with bolt cutters in hand in order to sever the chain that harpooned Max's hand. Seriously, did I mention how totally metal as fuck this flawless woman is? Also: bolt cutters are total life-savers in this world.

Loved, loved, LOVED that heart-stopping fake-out where the audience thought Angharad reacted too late to avoid the giant rocks, but nope, she totally did avoid them! Then what followed was that brief moment that warmed my heart: Angharad fixing a really proud look on her face―like she couldn't believe she was able to perform such a dangerous act―and Max giving her that adorably awkward thumbs-up like a proud father would give to his daughter accomplishing an incredible task.

But then my relief was short-lived because―spoiler alert!―when Angharad attempted to climb back in the passenger cabin, she slipped and tragically fell to her death. And as you can clearly see, she did not slip using her bloodied leg, so certain people out there can now stop indirectly blaming Max for contributing to the cause of her death, okay?! It's already devastating to watch a fan favorite like Angharad die, so let's not blame someone like Max for her demise.

I found it so heartbreaking to see Angharad's body so oddly contorted in that position as Joe held her in his grody arms. Even after so many viewings of this part, it still makes me cry to see someone so fierce and brave like Angharad die off so soon and unable to join the rest of the War Rig Family to the Green Place of Many Mothers.

The War Rig Family Driving To The Green Place Of Many Mothers

Things I Loved About These Scenes:

While not explicitly one continuous scene, I loved how the War Rig Family (now sans The Splendid Angharad, sadly) had relatively peaceful moments inside their massive getaway vehicle despite the fact that they were still not in the clear from the pursuing war parties of Immortan Joe and that they had a long way to go before arriving at the Green Place of Many Mothers.

I mean, really: how fucking badass is it of Furiosa to make repairs under her jacked-up tanker while said vehicle is still in motion?! Like, they could have stopped in order for her to properly fix the damage but she's all like, "Fuck stopping! FYI, we're still being chased by a psycho warlord, so let's keep my baby moving while I fix her up good." Lesser cinematic heroine bitches better bow the fuck down to her incontrovertible awesomeness.

The long drive to the Green Place was also the moment where Capable and Nux had their version of a meet-cute. There are no words to describe how tender and heart-wrenching their interaction was inside the War Rig's lookout post.

It was so interesting to see The Dag trace the symbol of Immortan Joe embossed on the passenger cabin's roof while Toast was silently taking inventory of their dwindling ammunition. There could be several possible explanations as to why the Dag would be fixated on tracing an image associated with her oppressor, but my interpretation would be that since she has this eccentric and sort of shamanistic aura, the Dag was trying to place a repelling curse on her rapist's emblem so that she and the rest of the War Rig Family would be free from Joe's treacherous reach.

The nighttime drive scenes were so great, too! There was that pensive moment where The Wives huddled with each other in the backseat as Capable and Cheedo held a lantern whose light gave a nice contrast to the blue night enveloping them. The other cool part was when the tanker drove past the now-dead Green Place and the War Rig Family caught a good glimpse of the creepy Swamp Crows. Though the latter scene was so fascinating to see, I loved how it was just short enough to immediately capture my attention and it would be a memorably striking image that would stay in my mind even after several viewings of the movie.

Of course, I can't forget the part where the young and beautiful kids all slept in the backseat while Dad Max and Mom Furiosa had a really deep conversation about Mom's motivation and reasons for taking the kids to the Green Place. Also, plenty of reasons for the Fury Road fandom shippers to celebrate in this moment because you got Maxiosa and Cheedag (or Dag/Cheedo/Toast) and Nuxable. There's practically a formidable armada of great OTP ships just waiting to be sailed right inside the War Rig!

Enough said about Nux eating that bug with Capable snoozing gently next to him. Precious cinnamon roll and all that jazz.

That awesome moment when Furiosa finally spotted a familiar landmark that she remembers from her childhood. You can literally see the spark of hope twinkle in her eyes as she lowers her binoculars.

How very astute of Dad Max to correctly assume that seeing a naked and distressed woman (hey, it's The Valkyrie!) on top of a disused electric tower is actually a trap for unsuspecting scavengers. But naturally, Mom Furiosa knows the real deal behind this sneaky setup and she's all like, "Chillax, everyone. Mama's got this. All of you stay in the War Rig while I handle this because shit is about to get hella fucking real for all of us. But in a good way, obvs."

The War Rig Family Rallies To Escape The Bullet Farmer In Trigger-Happy Pursuit

Things I Loved About This Scene:

First and foremost, this is the first instance in the movie where we see everything at night, and the visuals are absolutely incredible in this one. Even though all the "night scenes" were actually filmed in broad daylight, the visual effects team really did a fantastic job during post-production in terms of creating an eye-catching nocturnal landscape defined by gorgeously rich shades of blue that I've rarely seen in any other film before. Possibly the closest I could compare Fury Road's night scenes were the bioluminescent blue-green plankton swimming in the dark oceanic waters in Life Of Pi.

The stakes are crazy high for my precious War Rig Family considering that their primary getaway vehicle keeps getting stuck in massive mud patches and they know that the bad guys are right behind them. They may not be the Avengers, but they exhibited incredible teamwork during this intense moment. This scene also emphasizes that The Wives are not passive damsels in distress, but that they are empowered women who have reclaimed their agency to carry out their drive and initiative in aiding their own escape from Immortan Joe. They are seen actively helping Max and Furiosa in various ways to help get the War Rig out of a sticky situation, and that is just fucking awesome to see.

On that note, it was so great to see the Wives lifting heavy things like car doors and giant spiked tyres that would make Walter Bankston from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt quite proud (females are strong as hell!). I especially loved the part where Cheedo and The Dag rolled that giant spiked tyre as the team was quickly changing wheels, and they held hands afterwards. Big shoutout to the Dag/Cheedo shippers out there!

That awesomely LOL moment where Furiosa was wielding her sniper rifle and she's so fucking ready to just put the Bullet Farmer out of his deranged misery only to share a silent and confused look with Max when they both realize that the War Rig was suddenly driving away from them. Oh, Nux!

Speaking of our favorite War Boy, it was so great how he just didn't hesitate to help the good guys even though the rest of them were clearly skeptical of his intentions. Good thing Capable was there to act as mediator otherwise he would have been a goner. Of course, Furiosa can't take her assurances at face value, so she hands over her gun to Toast and our pixie-haired girlfriend just takes to her task to make sure Nux doesn't pull a fast one on them. Fucking loved how Nux and Capable reacted to that quick gun transfer: he's all like "Whoa shit girl, I'm honestly here to help you guys out and I just feel so attacked right now" while Capable is like "NOW TOAST SIS".

Of course, this scene contains the most iconic moment between Max and Furiosa that firmly cements their drift compatibility: he knows he's a crap sniper who's only going to waste the last bullet so he hands over the rifle to her and she FUCKING BLINDS THE BULLET FARMER in one shot from a crazy far distance at night! Note to all macho men in the world: drop your fucking ego and let confident women take charge if you know you are bad at certain things and skill sets.

A major shoutout to all the Nuxable shippers out there because this is also the scene where Nux kisses Capable on the cheek after she cuts him loose from the chains with the bolt cutters that the Dag used earlier in the film to free Cheedo from her chastity belt. Side note: bolt cutters are definitely an essential must-have tool if you are to live out a post-apocalyptic life in the desert. It’s an effective piece of technical equipment that also doubles as a lethal combat weapon.

Can't forget some nice Max and Nux teamwork where Max ties the cable to the tree and Nux trying his best to drive the War Rig out of the mud with the leverage they created. Did I mention this entire night chase scene from start to finish is drenched in so much awesome teamwork by the War Rig Family?

Not sure if anyone else noticed, but I definitely loved that moment of incredulity from Cheedo where she expressed a mixture of disbelief and outrage that the Bullet Farmer would even dare shoot at them knowing that Immortan Joe wanted his "treasures" unharmed and intact. Girlfriend definitely knows the high value of her assets and I appreciate that a lot! Of course, the beautiful cinnamon roll too good and too pure for this world has to be shielded and so Furiosa's maternal instincts kicks in and she pulls Cheedo immediately to the ground for safety. That's right, this greased-up mama bear with the badass bionic arm isn't taking murderous shit when her precious charges are involved!

Who says Mama Furiosa gets to hog the parental spotlight? Right after he makes quick work of the Bullet Farmer, Papa Max returns triumphant bearing gifts like extra ammunition, a new steering wheel for the War Rig, and a boot for Nux! Of course, the cinnamon roll War Boy looked so chuffed seeing that his burly blood bag was thoughtful enough to give him footwear to replace the one he lost earlier in the movie. And yes, big shoutout to the Max/Nux shippers out there, too!

The War Rig Family And The Vuvalini Take A Moment Of Reflection At The Edge Of The Plains Of Silence

Things I Loved About This Scene:

In contrast to the fast-paced night chase scene, this nocturnal scenario is quieter and more introspective as it shows the War Rig Family and The Vuvalini communing in relative peace underneath the stars and looking out at the Plains of Silence. I loved how this moment allowed me to take a decent breather from all the nail-bitingly intense action set pieces that preceded this lovely scene. Looking at this setting from outside of its original context, you'd think that they were out having a nice and peaceful time camping al fresco in the desert, where the only thing missing was a blazing campfire and everyone roasting marshmallows while singing happy folk songs.

There are three distinct conversations happening in this scene and all of them really resonated to me. First was Toast and Cheedo talking with the Vuvalini about the shining satellite they saw orbiting high above in space. The elder biker grannies reminisce on how satellites used to transmit signals around the world and relay TV shows to people and the younger girls respond that their caretaker, Miss Giddy, used to talk about things like satellites during their captivity back in the Citadel. I find it poignant that even in Miss Giddy's absence, there are intelligent women like her within the Vuvalini to share knowledge of the past upon the younger generation like Cheedo and Toast.

The second conversation involves The Dag and the Keeper of the Seeds. First, the two women talk about the Dag's fears that her unborn child might turn out to be a boy that will grow up to be ugly (inside and out) just like his bastard father. The elder green thumb assures her of the possibility that the Dag might give birth to a girl as opposed to a boy. The Dag then expresses her disappointment that the Vuvalini would resort to violence given her initial impression that their tribe was supposedly calm and peaceful. In response, the Seed Keeper explains and justifies the unfortunate necessity of their actions in order to preserve an ecological rebirth for the largely poisoned world represented by the seeds she keeps in her leather apothecary bag. It is at this very moment that the Dag begins to see that there is indeed a possibility that the world she knows can really change for the better when left in the hands of those who prefer to nurture with positive intentions rather than to destroy with negative reasons.

The third conversation revolves around Max and Furiosa at the fringes near the War Rig. The two drift-compatible warriors discuss their chances for survival knowing that the once-thriving Green Place is now an eerie dead space sparsely populated by the Swamp Crows. Furiosa discloses to Max that her tribe is willing to risk a lengthy motorcycle caravan across the Plains of Silence in the hopes of arriving at a fertile and habitable location where they could not be reached by Immortan Joe and his ally forces. She extends her offer to Max, saying that he and Nux are welcome to join given how they have proven themselves trustworthy in helping her ferry The Wives to safety. But rather than accepting her invitation, Max gently turns her down by saying that he can find his own way. This broke my heart quite a bit because when you see Furiosa's unhappy facial reaction to Max's rejection, you can clearly see that she was hoping he would join them given how effective they both worked as a defensive team to protect their young charges. Huge shoutout to the Max/Furiosa shippers out there when this moment happened!

There were other small moments in this entire scene that I loved apart from the three major conversations. Obviously, that brief shot of Nux and Capable cuddling in the War Rig's lookout station is a total keeper. I would have liked to see a fourth discussion that involves the two of them, but I guess since they already had a "paradigm shift moment" earlier in the film at the same location, the filmmakers decided to keep their appearance in this scene relatively simple. I can only hope that in the home video release, there might be a deleted scene of Nux and Capable talking again at night high up on the War Rig (if only to please me and the Nuxable shippers out there).

What else? Oh yes, I really loved the subtle color details in this scene. Like, the only bits of color you can discern among the beautiful shades of blue are the yellow flame illuminating Capable and Nux and the vivid green plant growing inside an animal skull. Also a very brief (if largely shadowed) glimpse of Capable's red hair since she was the closest to the lantern.

The subtle details I noticed in this scene also extends to the costumes. The Dag now wears her platinum blonde tresses with some cool hair accessories and she's also sporting a utility belt around her waist. Cheedo can also be seen sporting the colorful striped headscarf that she continues to wear even during the climactic race back to the Citadel.

Speaking of Cheedo, this was the rare instance where I noticed that she isn't with the Dag. Normally, you would see them both together in the same way that Angharad (bless her soul so much) was always with Capable early in the second act of the film. Though it's great to see Cheedo together with Toast among the other members of the Vuvalini, it was a bit disorienting for me to notice this after several viewings given how the film naturally paired her with the Dag, especially after realizing that their relationship was actually cemented as a result of the Dag trying to protect the virginal Cheedo from being raped for the first time by Immortan Joe in the official Vertigo prequel comic.

The War Rig Family Returns Triumphant To The Citadel With Immortan Joe's Corpse

Things I Loved About This Scene:

The quiet tension of everyone in the Citadel seeing the Gigahorse driving towards the loading dock until Max steps out of the vehicle to reveal the mangled corpse of Immortan Joe and celebratory shit just got way too hella real.

Max just kicking Joe's corpse to the ground like it was yesterday's garbage and the Wretched just going apeshit tearing his dead body apart with unbridled joy knowing that their tormentor is confirmed gone to hell. That was such a fucking satisfying moment like I can't even.

The super cute War Pups just looking at Corpus Colossus and those boys deciding to just fuck it and let the vanquishers of Immortan Joe up on the loading dock at the behest of the Wretched, while the elder minions are just too shell-shocked at the death of their former leader to even react against the War Pups' actions.

I really loved the telescopic POV showing Capable, Toast, Cheedo, and The Dag emerging like ethereal post-apocalyptic warrior princesses from the Gigahorse and Max helping an injured but undefeated Furiosa out of the driver's cab and onto the hood of the monster truck. That was such a great shot of the War Rig Family and I imagine Angharad and Nux looking down on them with immense pride and joy knowing their sacrifice for their comrades didn't go in vain.

Major props at the inclusive attitude of the Wives as they happily pull up the citizens of the Citadel onto the loading dock to rise up with them. It really shows how they see the Wretched as their equals and that they want them to share the victory and freedom now that they are all free from Immortan Joe's tyranny.

I also loved how the Milking Mothers opened the floodgates to let the water flow free so that the citizens down below can truly savor a life-saving resource that was cruelly withheld from them under Joe's rule. Even though it was a wide shot, you can really sense the elation on the Milking Mothers' faces when they activated the waterfall mechanism because they know that everyone in the Citadel deserves to drink water and not something so barbaric as breast milk.

Obviously, it goes without saying that the silent exchange between Max and Furiosa―him from below and her up above―is an incredibly powerful moment which I absolutely adored. The audience just witnessed a tacit understanding and recognition of mutual respect between two similar people: fierce road warriors who are now bound not just by blood, but by their epic shared experience of defeating a post-apocalyptic dictator amidst intense action and dramatic events.

Very few movies contain a really memorable and highly emotional closing shot that encapsulates the exhilarating climax of a film, and I'm happy to see that this masterpiece has a perfect ending. Seeing Furiosa and the Wives looking down towards the audience as the loading dock slowly covers the screen to black was the glorious icing on top of an explosively delicious feminist action summer movie cake! Also: the Dag looked so adorable clutching the apothecary bag of seeds. You just know that she'll definitely make good use of the contents of that satchel and will honor the Keeper of the Seeds by planting her precious collection in the Citadel gardens in order to continue the eco-positive legacy of the Vuvalini.

I made a damn good mixtape for this specific moment in the movie if I do say so myself. Citadel liberated, Citadel victorious indeed! And for real, this movie deserves all the damn awards come awards season early next year otherwise outraged shit is going to hit the fandom's fan. Oscars, you have been warned.
