I've had this exact theory since the opening scene of season 2! Looking back, Satan is never referred to as Lucifer in either season, and Crowley was the first angel (that we know of) to bring light into the universe. Add his former extremely high rank in heaven and it all makes so much sense. The only issue is Crowley mentions hanging out with Lucifer, but he was drunk and could have been speaking in 3rd person, I suppose. Idk. I like the theory, but that line is season 1 might prove it wrong.

Check out this video from the AMAZING YouTube channel “Religion for Breakfast” who is a religious SCHOLAR who breaks down biblical, and cultural religious aspects.

In this video he clearly shows us the only references to “Satan” and “Lucifer” in the Bible and this is where my theory that CROWLEY was an Angel associated with the “morning star” is who culturally goes on to do all the things on earth associated with “the devil”.

I think Neil Gaiman is combining some actual biblical scholarship, where Satan and Lucifer are never biblically tied as the same entity with some Paradise Lost, which culturally tied them together forever, and some original goodness for the good omens universe, which seems to place a supreme archangel closest to God over all the other angels.

In conclusion Crowley had the angel name Lucifer, and was the supreme archangel before Gabriel. Crowley, and unreliable narrator was actually the cause of everyone’s fall by asking too many questions which started seeding foment.

He is not “Lucifer king of hell” he is not a Duke of hell, Satan was still the big “opposer” who took over and lead the war.

That’s it that’s my essay

The fact that Good Omens S2 was SO QUEER.

Not Just Maggie and Nina (and Lindsey)

Not just Aziraphale and Crowley

Not even just Gabriel and Beelzebub (who is NB)

But the magician shopkeeper and his trans/NB spouse who wore a fancy early 19th century dress to the ball.

Job's son who was flirting with Aziraphale (hilariously played by Ty Tennant giving Michael Sheen heart eyes in front of his dad lmao)

Even the tough macho man in Scotland that Aziraphale borrows the phone from - using it for "Grindr".

Plus of course Michael, Uriel, Muriel, and Dagon also all being non binary/gender queer characters.

With all this, there was no homophobia, no one batted an eyelid at any characters sexualities, sexuality wasn't even brought up, characters just are who they are and like who they like. Its a non issue in the GO universe.

AKA my favourite type of queer representation. The same type found in The Sandman (show not comic).

And whilst there was plenty of drama and not everyone gets a happy queer ending (YET) there was no queer trauma to be seen. No hate crimes, no "bury your gays", no stupid discussions about how HARD it is to be out of the closet in a bigoted world, because the GO world isn't bigoted.

Its SUCH a BREATH OF FRESH AIR.

I know we have similar experiences in The Sandman, In OFMD, and even in WWDITS, but each time a new show takes this very new approach towards queer representation I feel like I'm once again sinking into a comforting hug from someone I love, who loves me back.

Its just really fucking wonderful to see. I hope we keep seeing it more and more often.

A painting of Crowley posing with four goats. Crowley is dressed in his season 2 Job flashback outfit, including that awful goatee. He has his arms around the front two goats like they're bros while one chews on his hair and another bites at the top of his head. Another goat has taken a bite out of the banner at the bottom of the screen, which appears to be made of paper, and which reads "The Kids Are All Right".

He's very easily peer pressured

(Edit: I meant by the goats)

So here’s what I’m thinking.

Good Omens was about Crowley being charged with delivering the Antichrist to earth and overseeing his upbringing.

The sequel, then, would’ve been about Aziraphale being charged with bringing about the Second Coming. A nice parallel to the first book.

But in order to get there, we would need a reason as to why it was Aziraphale, not Gabriel, who was charged with that. Traditionally it would’ve been Gabriel, right?

So Gabriel had to go away somehow, and Aziraphale had to become Supreme Archangel after rejecting and being rejected by Heaven. Hence, season 2, connecting the two stories.

And I love how Season 2 did this.

(and I have a lot of thoughts, so putting the rest of this long post beneath the cut)

I think there is A LOT in the fact that Crowley chooses to kiss Aziraphale.

Gabriel and Beelzebub have chosen each other, yet the show is very careful in not having them kiss or even hug romantically; they are Superior Beings, not humans, so they don't conform to humans' way of performing, showing, or possibly even feeling love. If they were humans, I'm sure they would have happily kissed before disappearing into their happy ever after, because that's what (most) humans want to do in such circumstances, and also because it's a fast and sure way to clarify the feelings to the audience.

This is in contrast with the kiss Crowley chooses to give -a very rushed, passionate, not though through, human kiss. He had already talked about his feeling (as Nina suggested), he had already made a confession, no one at that point was in doubt about where he stands for Aziraphale. So why the kiss? It wasn't necessary to clarify his feelings...or was it? I think is was necessary to further clarify them. To me Crowley is not saying just "I love you" with that kiss, he is also saying "I love you in a human way, I love us not the Angels we could be Up There, I love us here on Earth".

He does not want to be back in Heaven, not even with Aziraphale; he's been there, he's been there in a very high rank, he knows that it is not a nice place. He wants to stay on Earth with Aziraphale and that's what he's trying to tell him by choosing to show love in a human way.
