You Have Waited For Aeons, But The Results Of The Great Sneezing Poll Are Finally Here! With A Whopping

You have waited for aeons, but the results of the great sneezing poll are finally here! With a whopping 98 votes cast*, the hk community has banded together to answer the great question: how do vessels sneeze? (*For all responses where multiple options were answered without one being clearly stated as the final choice, all mentioned options were assigned a full vote) Let's take a look at how many votes the original options got:

You Have Waited For Aeons, But The Results Of The Great Sneezing Poll Are Finally Here! With A Whopping

People really seemed to prefer the most violent option! Vessels can't catch a break, can they? But wait, there's more! The math wizards out there may have noticed the above votes don't add up to 98. And that's because some brave souls stood up for their beliefs and added their own options, let's take a look at those:

You Have Waited For Aeons, But The Results Of The Great Sneezing Poll Are Finally Here! With A Whopping

These are all great, valid options and I'm glad they weren't left out thanks to the caring gamers in the notes - even option F, which is frankly horrifying!

One person even went out of their way to illustrate their own option themselves, very considerate:

You Have Waited For Aeons, But The Results Of The Great Sneezing Poll Are Finally Here! With A Whopping

Of course this came at the cost that they (consciously) chose to use the letter "D" for their option, which was kind of already in use. I am no man to play god, so I had to leave this unchanged. Why would you do this to me? Now that we have the votes for all 9 options, it's time for an analysis! This, naturally, means colorful plots:

You Have Waited For Aeons, But The Results Of The Great Sneezing Poll Are Finally Here! With A Whopping
You Have Waited For Aeons, But The Results Of The Great Sneezing Poll Are Finally Here! With A Whopping

Wicked! D seems to be clearly winning, but I can't call this a real analysis without any statistics, so I ran 100 runs of 10 000 simulations to estimate the p-values that any of the original 4 options had a higher probability to be voted than by chance (other options excluded as they had the unfair disadvantage only people browsing all the notes could vote for them - I'd have to redo this poll for them to have a real chance). This resulted in D being indeed the only outcome significant under the 5% significance level (with a p-value of ~0.000002). In other words, violence wins! Here's a celebratory sketch of one especially funny vote for the winning option:

You Have Waited For Aeons, But The Results Of The Great Sneezing Poll Are Finally Here! With A Whopping

It's worth mentioning that this assumes only one answer is correct, which doesn't necessarily have to be the case as one wise scholar pointed out:

You Have Waited For Aeons, But The Results Of The Great Sneezing Poll Are Finally Here! With A Whopping

Maybe they're all winners, what a nice thought to end on!

By the way, you can improve your executive function. You can literally build it like a muscle.

Yes, even if you're neurodivergent. I don't have ADHD, but it is allegedly a thing with ADHD as well. And I am autistic, and after a bunch of nerve damage (severe enough that I was basically housebound for 6 months), I had to completely rebuild my ability to get my brain to Do Things from what felt like nearly scratch.

This is specifically from ADDitude magazine, so written specifically for ADHD (and while focused in large part on kids, also definitely includes adults and adult activities):

How to Sharpen Executive Functions: Activities to Hone Brain Skills
ADDitude
Executive functioning skills range from working memory to cognitive flexibility to inhibitory control, and beyond. They power our daily func

Here's a link on this for autism (though as an editor wow did that title need an editor lol):

Enhancing Executive Functioning Difficulties in Adults with Autism
Kenneth Roberson, Ph.D.
Practical Strategies for Enhancing Executive Functioning Difficulties in Adults With Autism - Living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as

Resources on this aren't great because they're mainly aimed at neurotypical therapists or parents of neurdivergent children. There's worksheets you can do that help a lot too or thought work you can do to sort of build the neuro-infrastructure for tasks.

But a lot of the stuff is just like. fun. Pulling from both the first article and my own experience:

Play games or video games where you have to make a lot of decisions. Literally go make a ton of picrews or do online dress-up dolls if you like. It helped me.

Art, especially forms of art that require patience, planning ahead, or in contrast improvisation

Listening to longform storytelling without visuals, e.g. just listening regularly to audiobooks or narrative podcasts, etc.

Meditation

Martial arts

Sports in general

Board games like chess or Catan (I actually found a big list of what board games are good for building what executive functioning skills here)

Woodworking

Cooking

If you're bad at time management play games or video games with a bunch of timers

Things can be easier. You might always have a disability around this (I certainly always will), but it can be easier. You do not have to be this stuck forever.

Workbooks to improve executive functioning

Since the post I made last night about improving executive functioning was so popular, I figured I should pull these out of my comments and give them their own post, in case it's helpful for people.

I have worked with the publishers of all of the books linked below and can vouch for their psychology books. The publisher of most of them, New Harbinger, is an extremely credible evidence-based psychology publisher.

Obvious disclaimer that everyone's brain is different and what works for someone else may not work for you.

Is there evidence that executive functioning can be improved? Yes. This book appears to be a very thorough overview of the field, and contains both advocates and detractors of cognitive training, for a balanced perspective. From the table of contents, I would really recommend jumping straight to Part 3: Developmental Perspectives for executive functioning (EF) writ large.

Certain therapy modalities are specifically designed for skill-building in areas like impulsivity, decision-making, emotional regulation, and cognitive flexibility, all of which are EF skills or very dependent on EF skills. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is probably the best field to look at for these - skill-building in those areas is its core goal.

Some DBT workbooks:

The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook: Practical DBT Exercises for Learning Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation, and Distress Tolerance

The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook for Teens

There are also a lot of workbooks for ADHD that are sometimes more broad but also can help with executive functioning:

The Adult ADHD and Anxiety Workbook: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Skills to Manage Stress, Find Focus, and Reclaim Your Life

The CBT Workbook for Adult ADHD: Evidence-Based Exercises to Improve Your Focus, Productivity, and Wellbeing

The Neurodivergence Skills Workbook for Autism and ADHD

General executive functioning workbooks:

The Executive Functioning Workbook for Teens

Executive Functioning Workbook for Adults: Exercises to Help You Get Organized, Stay Focused, and Achieve Your Goals

Hope these are helpful to someone!!

The most valuable thing I learned doing a Masters degree with depression, anxiety and ADHD was to change my “things I’m bad at” list to “things I can’t do on my own.” Stop thinking of them as things I could do if I tried hard enough, and accept that I can’t accomplish them by effort and willpower alone; they’re genuine neurocognitive deficits, and if I need to do the thing, then just like a blind person reading or a mobility impaired person going up a storey in a building, I need to find a different method.

I’m “bad at” working on long-term projects without an imminent deadline or someone breathing down my neck? Okay, let’s change that: I can’t work on long-term projects without an imminent deadline and someone breathing down my neck. So let’s create an imminent deadline and recruit neck-breathers. Find a sympathetic prof who will agree that 3 weeks before the due date they expect me to show them my preliminary notes and bibliography. Get a friend I trust to block off an hour to sit with me and keep asking, “Are you working on your project?” Write a blog post about my progress. Arrange to trade papers and proofread them with another student.

Accept your limitations and learn to leverage them, instead of buying the neurotypical fairytale that they’ll go away if you just try hard enough.

How I got these results on my finals without spending hours stu"dying" at my desk.

How I Got These Results On My Finals Without Spending Hours Stu"dying" At My Desk.
How I Got These Results On My Finals Without Spending Hours Stu"dying" At My Desk.

Now that finals season is over, we almost all recieved our grades and results.

However, sometimes you don't get the results you wanted despite studying for hours and hours on end. It's frustrating and discouraging, right?

Here are my tips on how to get better grades without having to spend all of your free time at your desk! ↓

NB: That doesn't mean that you should stop studying entirely.

Also this is a really long post but you can of course just read the tips that interest you!

How I Got These Results On My Finals Without Spending Hours Stu"dying" At My Desk.

1. Be attentive in class. I know it's tempting to just sit down and chat with your friends or stay on your phone, because class can be really boring. However, paying attention to what your teacher says and taking note of everything that might sound useful is a huge step in getting better grades.

Your note-taking doesn't have to be aesthetic. At the beginning of the year I wasted a lot of time making my notes pretty in class, and that made me lose a lot of precious information. You can always rewrite your notes in an aesthetic way later! Re-writing is a great study method too, so it's a win-win. To give you an example, here are the history and theatre history notes I take in class:

How I Got These Results On My Finals Without Spending Hours Stu"dying" At My Desk.
How I Got These Results On My Finals Without Spending Hours Stu"dying" At My Desk.

They're ugly. And that's okay! If I could score 35 and 50 respectively with these, so can you.

2. Be active in class. Of course, most of the time just listening isn't enough. You need to participate. Teacher asks a question? Raise your hand!

Now, you might be thinking "but what if I don't have the right answer and say something false? Everyone will make fun of me", and to that I will answer, who cares? They're not trying. You're making efforts to absorb the material, they're just sitting there and laughing because they're insecure about their own answers. I'm not making fun of them by saying this, it's just a fact.

3. Ask questions. Just, a bunch of them. If you don't understand the material, or have doubts, ask your teacher! They're not your enemy, even if they might sound dismissive. This year for example, I had a physics teacher who was a PAIN in class. He talked through the lesson super quickly and never really explained anything to anyone. However, there was one time where I didn't understand the material at all, and I went to talk to him. And he took time (like 20 minutes!) to re-explain to me what I hadn't understood.

Teachers are here to help you. Take advantage of it.

4. Research research research! By that I mean, go further! For example, in French class I had to read a book that talked about the genocide in Rwanda. But it was told through a child's eyes, so didn't really talk about what exactly was going on. So, I took it upon myself to take some time to make my own research about it. And guess what? Talking about it improved my grade on that project. In history, make sure you understand the causes and consequences of the historical events you study in class. "Why did it happen?" and "What was its impact on society?" are two questions you must be able to answer at the end of the day.

5. Understand how. This is maths-specific. Take this simple question about arithmetic sequences:

If the first term of a sequence (a1) is 2 and the common difference (d) is 5, what will be the 7th term (an) of that sequence?

It's not enough to know that the result is 32 because that's the answer you got in class. You need to understand the steps you use to get to the result.

Here for example, the formula is:

an = a1 + (n-1) . d

So, here:

a1 = 2, n = 7, d = 5.

The equation becomes :

an = 2 + (7 - 1) . 5

It's now simply a matter of method! 7-1 comes first, so you're left with:

an = 2 + 6 . 5

Then, the multiplication:

an = 2 + 30

And lastly:

an = 32

It's all a matter of taking the time to do things in the right order, one at a time. Think of it like reading a sentence! You can't just read the words in a random order, right? That wouldn't make sense. Read the words in the right order. Calculate in the right order. It's the same thing, I promise (coming from someone who used to hate maths)!

I really like the exam scene in assassination classroom for that reason. The moment the big monster to slay becomes a simple fish to cut because you know from where to start? That's the goal here.

6. Let go. You don't have to be the best of the best all the time. Putting unnecessary pressure on yourself and beating yourself up for not having full marks is doing the exact opposite of what we want here. You're smart, okay? Stressing yourself out does one thing: it turns your brain to mush, making you incapable of remembering information and will make you lose your means when you're faced with a test or an exam. That's what I did for chemistry this year, because I struggle with it, and would you look at that! I got 28. So let go. It's okay, you got this. ⚝

All in all, you're your own best friend. Take care of yourself. Don't put on yourself a pressure you wouldn't put on others. Being too hard on yourself will only end up hurting you, and we don't want that!

any tips on time management and studying tips? im a college freshman and im fighting for my life everyday trying to keep up with everything being thrown at me, its so overwhelming… :(

(lowkey makes me feel like im too stupid for college…)

Hi! I just want to start off by saying that we all lose our minds with school and stress (hell, I just had my my 3rd (I think…maybe 2nd, idk) mental break down of the semester a couple of days ago. So no one is immune to this! You’re not stupid; college just a lot of shit to do all at once.

1. One thing I am starting to do is take the day of the week that I am doing school stuff the most (so a 10 hr day between class and clinicals) and then doing NOTHING school-related when I come home. I eat, I watch tv, go on tik tok, and try to plan out my homework for the next week while I enjoy a tv show, etc. Giving yourself a mental break once a week after a long day can be really helpful. And, this gives you something to look forward to.

2. SLEEP! Try to get at least 6hrs of sleep/night (more like 7-8, but 6 at the very least). This is so helpful to memory and your mental and physical wellbeing. One thing I’ve lived by for YEARS is, for the night before an exam, if I don’t know it by midnight, I’m not gonna know it for the exam. Meaning, I go to sleep now to be well-rested so I can do my best on the exam because it is a known fact that sleep helps with focus instead of staying up and trying to figure out that concept.

3. Learn how to skim a textbook, record your lectures (I voice memo my tougher ones to go back to), and if a textbook isn’t helpful, do NOT waste your time reading it! For more science-heavy classes, I’ve been just going to class and recording the lecture, and then after class, coming home and taking notes based on my lecture recording (NO textbook reading). This helps because I can pause and have time to write things down and go back if I’m confused or miss something…and I don’t waste my time deciphering a textbook.

4. When writing out your homework, write down everything you want to get done that day and pick the top three things you want/need to get done (I highlight these specifically in my planner each day). This will help you prioritize what you need to get done exactly (I call it the eat the frog method [harder stuff first])

I hope this was helpful! And remember, EVERYONE feels this way in college; it’s not just you! ❤️
