So I saw him yesterday. He had a piece of mail for me. The dread and anxiety was heavy.

I was worried he was going to be charming or his sadness was going to melt the walls I have sweat blood to build.

That didnt happen.

I was just reminded how bad he makes me feel; that feeling in my chest that I hadn't felt it in weeks returned in full force. The feeling where I can't exhale or drop my shoulders from a defensive position.

I don't ever want to feel like that again. But I'm glad I felt it yesterday.

I do not want to be lured back in.

Next time I won't stay, as planned.

Wip Ask Game

Also me: *second later, after realizing that about half of my WIPs don't have a title because I'm writing it on paper at school* Oh. Oh no. Not the title!

Me: *next second later, realizing that I'm a mess so most of these papers are out of a satchel I brought among other purposes, specifically for that* Well, gotta pull Drake and ignore my responsibilities to dig some shit up :D

I managed to get through both of these inconveniences so here we are, ask if you want. Most of them are one-shots but some (majority) are on their way to becoming something like my contingencies prompt fill (40 pages in Word document, over 20,000 words :D)

update on this: still haven't looked into other kinds of radiation, but I remembered that lead does in fact block x-rays. I think it blocks some other radiation, too, so that doesn't prove anything, but still

Recently, I had a thought- according to the animated series at least (I am not up to date on lore from anything else at the moment), Superman's strengths and weaknesses are both tied to radiation. He gets power from Earth's sun, and is weakened by light from Krypton's sun and whatever radiation kryptonite emits. What I'm wondering is, what if the weaknesses are related?

What I propose is that the red sun radiation and kryptonite radiation are, actually, the same radiation. Whatever this form of radiation is, our own sun does not emit it (or at least not much). The question is, though, what kind of radiation is this? (In-universe, it's probably some type of radiation that doesn't exist in our world, but I'm ignoring that for fun.) This is not an important question in any way, but I think it would make for an interesting headcanon, and depending on what it is it could open up other potential weaknesses to be explored at some point.

Because kryptonite seems to be radioactive in an unnamed unusual way (again, using the animated series for lore), I don't think radioactive rocks are the place to start here. So, I've been looking at the types of radiation red stars produce.

The first thing to do is find which type of star the Kryptonian sun is. According to a very brief web search, there seem to be three main types of red stars: red dwarfs, red giants, and red supergiants. I am not knowledgeable enough in star types to tell which one it is, but apparently red dwarf stars are quite common, so I'll assume it's that for the time being.

The second thing is to find out what type of radiation these stars emit- and there's some interesting stuff with red dwarfs here. Apparently, red dwarf stars (specifically young ones) are "strong sources of high-energy radiation, including...ultraviolet light and X-rays" (NASA website). Apparently, this radiation can make it hard for planets orbiting these stars to support life. In real life, this is because the planet's atmospheres can be destroyed. It's not too hard, though, to extrapolate this and say that if it orbited a star like this, life on Krypton could have been more resilient in order to deal with this star- and then seem much stronger when removed from it's presence. That's just speculation and not really rooted in science, which is what I'm trying to be here for.

The radiation we're looking for has to be something the sun doesn't emit much. Apparently, the sun doesn't emit many x-rays- not none, but not much compared to other wavelengths. The sun definitely does emit ultraviolet rays, but not as much as some other colors. Additionally, ultraviolet light is partially filtered out by Earth's atmosphere. Because the sun does emit quite a bit ultraviolet light, even if it's blocked, it seems for the moment like x-ray light is more likely.

X-rays also have another property that this mystery kryptonian radiation does: it is harmful to humans, specifically when they are exposed over a long period of time. X-rays have quite a few negative effects, really, which I don't feel like talking about here. I really think x-rays fit quite well. There's just one more thing: according to the theory I mentioned earlier, this would mean that kryptonite would emit x-rays, too. So, could rocks emit x-rays?

No. No they can't.

According to an internet person's math, water needs to be heated to 5000K (4726.85 °C, or 8540.33 °F) to start emitting x-rays at all (link to math). To produce any noticeable amount of x-rays, something would have to be heated to the temperature of the sun. I cannot express in any way just how much this isn't happening. The theoretical rocks which theoretically emit x-rays are literally being held by people with their bare hands. The rocks are still rock-shaped instead of plasma.

So, there are a few options here:

For handwavey reasons, kryptonite is a material that breaks the laws of physics and chemistry and probably other things too by emitting x-rays (and green light) instead of any other type of radiation. No infrared, no ultraviolet, just x-rays.

I'm completely wrong and red sun radiation and whatever radiation kryptonite has are completely different. I don't really like this from a narrative perspective. It seems more interesting if it's all the same radiation, just from different things.

It's magic in radiation form and there is no explanation.

It's actually ultraviolet light, or some other radiation that might not even be electromagnetic. I'm going to assume it's this, for now. Sometime later I'll look into other types of radiation to see if any work (unless someone else does it).

In conclusion: idk, but it's interesting to think about.
