She didn't know her name, where she was, how long she had been here. She didn't remember her parents, who they were, what they looked like or their names. It was all useless information, because they weren't here now and so they couldn't help her with her only goal. Survival.

Making a life for oneself in the desert was not at all easy. But luck was on her side it seemed.

After wandering mindlessly through the desert for many nights, she found a wreck, of what, she didn't know. It wasn't a big wreck, but it would provide shelter from the storms. Nothing was worse than storms. Tornados, flying sand, strong wind, thunder and lightning, death and destruction everywhere, accompanied by great noise. She decided to make it her hideout, over time she improved it bit by bit, she brought in an old, moldy mattress and found herself a rusty old knife that she stole from a corpse.

Her hideout was near a road, so she waited for cars to appear and as foolish as it was, she tried to stop them and trade water for a place to sleep. Luck was on her side again, because nobody had ever tried to harm her and often felt sorry enough for her to give her a few gulps of the fresh liquid. But never ever had anyone taken up her offer of a roof above their head.

She knew why, but didn't mind it much herself. Being surrounded by two-headed lizards her whole life, or rather what she remembered from it, her mutation felt almost normal to her. Even though she could see why a third eye would throw someone off.

Most of the time, she didn't even know it was there, It's not like it was a functional eye. It was just an eyeball, no pupil, eyelashes or eyebrow and it was completely numb to pain. She wasn't even sure it blinked.

Times were becoming hard, harder than before, hard like times before she found her precious hideout.

No cars have passed this part of the road and she was becoming weaker and weaker. Her body, in an attempt to save itself, shut down as many functions as possible, just to keep the heart beating.

But she knew it wasn't enough.

After a particularly harsh storm, which nearly scared the life out of her and which made quite a few holes in her hideout, the roar of car engines could be heard. Her heart skipped a beat, both from fright and excitement. Cars meant people, people meant water.

But people could also mean danger.

And that was something she couldn't risk in her weak state. So she gathered all her strength, gripped her rusty knife and crawled through one of the holes out of her hideout and quickly hid behind it. She planned on observing the situation and then acting.

The first warning sign was all the battle gear and weapons that basically made those cars. The second was that they pulled up by her hideout, she felt her chest tighten and adrenaline start pumping through her. And the third, final part that told her, screamed at her the word DANGER, was their appearance.

After what could have been seconds, her precious hideout was swarmed by young men and older boys. They looked very intimidating to her, white skin with dark patterns, bald heads, covered in scars with feral eyes and scruffy voices, they couldn't mean anything but danger.

On the other hand, food has been scarce, water non existent, she needed to get out of here and this might be her only chance.

Her mind, so young and naive, came up with a seemingly great idea. Stealthily, careful not to make any sound, she climbed under on of their armored cars. Luckily for her, there were places she could squeeze her her feet into and tubes she could hold onto. They would give her a ride, they just wouldn't know about it. And when she'd decide she wants to get off, she'll just let go.

Yeah, because that would work.

The moment they gained speed, she realized she was screwed. Panic settled in, but not only for this reason. The longer they went, the hotter the tubes she was holding were.

The pain was quickly becoming unbearable. She wanted to scream, but the fear of being found was stronger, so she could only cry silently.

It seemed like eternity before they stopped. Tho whole ride she had her eyes closed and teeth gritted, barely keeping quiet. Her feet and palms felt like she was on fire. Never in her life has she felt greater agony.

She opened her eyes, just a little bit, as if it would aid her in not being seen. The light seemed brighter than in her hideout. The car was on some sort of metal ramp, waiting for something. Thousands of people surrounded the ramp, trying to get on, but were held back by the ghost looking men.

With a jerk, the ramp started rising, much to her surprise. From her view, she saw heavy boots of the scary men and dirty mutated hands of the people trying to climb on. The heavy boots stomped on the hands, everyone was yelling, it was becoming too much and she was getting lightheaded.

The journey up wasn't really long, but the sudden change in light that came right after made her disoriented. It seemed like all the light suddenly dissapeared and darkness swallowed the world around her.

Her mind was in overdrive. It felt like all the pain had transfered from her limbs to her head, making her dizzy. Because of all the pain, she couldn't keep track of where the car was going. She was weak, panicking, lightheaded and disoriented, only a few steps before fainting.

A quiet gasp could be heard and she whipped her head in the direction of it. A small, bald head, with wide eyes was staring at her with shock written all over its face. A small boy, very similar to the older ghostly boys, was peeking under the car.

For a very awkward while, they just stared at each other, until the boy jerked. He was probably just scolded, because he dissapeared from her vision in a lightning speed. That didn't last long, because in no time, there wasn't just one, but two heads looking under the car.

It was in that moment that she felt something new, something different. All of a sudden, she felt energized, her body screamed at her what are you waiting for? Go!

With one mighty tug, in which she put a force so great she never knew where she had gotten in that moment, she ripped her limbs from the car a bolted from under it.

She didn't know where she was running. She just was. She didn't have the strength to think rationally, or at all. Her body focused everything on survival, like so many times before and shut her mind into a dark cell of adrenaline.

The only thing she could see were possible paths between the sea of white skinned, bald boys and the only thing she could hear were the yells and rapid footsteps of those chasing after her, which only resulted in her body producing more adrenaline.

For a while she thought she might even succeed, but just as she was getting her hopes up, she tripped.

One of the war boys not involved in the chase stuck his foot out and successfully tripped the little girl. She fell to the ground and the only thing she managed to do before blacking out was to roll on her back and with hooded gaze take one look at numerous people crouched down all around her.

Nobody ever told her how long was she out, she just woke up in a strange place. It was a cave and it was full of war boys, but unlike the other place she's seen here, these boys were sitting or laying down on stone benches, connected to people hanging upside down from the ceiling.

Her hands and feet were covered in bandages and she felt exhausted. Later on she found out the place was called the Organic mechanic's shop, it was a place where sick war boys that couldn't do war were being healed by a person called Organic mechanic, a strange man that creeped her out a little. He was a bit rough and it seemed like his mouth didn't have any filter, for he said everything that came to his mind, but she never had any problems with him.

It took a while and a lot of a strange cream the Organic mechanic made for her, but her palms and feet scarred without any complications and she was oficially healed. Before she even had the time to ask what was going to happen to her now, two war boys came over, hooked their arms under her armpits and started dragging her somewhere.

For a while she tried to struggle, but nothing happened, so she listened to her survival instinct and focused on where they were going and tried to remember the way.

They dragged her into a room, where there were three men waiting already. The first was a disgusting man, old and worn down by illnesses and the two behind him weren't any better, one couldn't breathe without a mask, much like the blonde one, and the other looked like a bearded baby.

She didn't understand at first, but the older she got, the more she realized how important meeting Immortan Joe and his sons was to her. But it went well, he was intrigued by her quick wit, and fortunately her third eye prevented her from becoming a wife. But the Immortan knew that casting her out would be a loss and so he let her stay, not that she tried to achieve that, but she was to become a war boy.

And that's how the torture began.

The war boys hierarchy was tough and climbing to the top hard. She started as a war pup. First they took her to a war boy, who shaved her head and caked a mixture of white clay and water on her skin. Then he dipped his fingers in what looked like motor oil and grease and smudged it around all her eyes. Then they took what little clothing she had and gave her shorts made from a rough fabric and bandaged her chest to cover her still underdeveloped breasts. Lastly, she was given a name. For her speed, quick thinking and wit they named her Weasle.

War pups, on the very bottom of the hierarchy, were taught to become war boys. The hard way. There was no teaching theory and then practice. You had to learn while working, because the war boys had to be ready at all times and there were loads and loads of work to do. From learning to fight, fixing cars, to helping tend to the sick or injured war boys and helping pulling up vehicles back from raiding and scavenging.

For any mistake they were bullied and beaten, so they wouldn't do it again. It was cruel, but it worked and Weasel was lucky that she was a quick learner.

The only time she got to rest was night. In the evening they all went to one big cave, war boys and pups alike, and slept there, huddled cuddled together to prevent the cold from reaching them. It was at times like these Weasel got to think about her life.

She wasn't happy. She ached all the time and the pain never stopped. Sometimes she thought that being dead would be much better than this. She worked hard for becoming a war boy, but what would it bring her? War boys bullied each other the same as they bullied the pups. Everybody, even they themselves knew that they were all very ill and would die much sooner than full lives. And nobody took them seriously, nobody ever treated her like her life mattered. She was sick of it all.

Tonight would be the night she'd end it all, she decided. She found a small window some time ago, big enough to climb through it. If she jumped from there nobody would care, she was just a face in the crowd. Just a number, a small wheel in the big machine that was Citadel. Yes, a machine. Human slaves producing, producing children, producing milk, producing warriors and god forbid if somebody didn't produce as much as they were supposed to.

Her small feet pattered through the nearly pitch black hallways, so silent were they that her footsteps sounded to her like thunder during the mighty storms. She shuddered at the memory. Storms were still the scariest thing, scarier than any war boy or pup. And nobody offered comfort when they came, because nobody probably even knew the word comfort.

Another pair of footsteps could be heard, created by feet similar to hers, they were running, running towards her and before she could even blink, she felt her body being tackled down.

She fell harshly on her stomach, hitting her chin on the hard stone. The other pup, because who else could it be, straddled her back and she could feel his smug grin as he watched her feeble attempts at getting from under him.

"And where do you think you're sneaking off to, huh?" he asked cockily. He flipped her on her back, his eyes going wide and his jaw dropping when he saw who exactly he caught. "It's none of your business!" Weasel snarled at him and thrashed wildly in his hold, so wildly in fact, he had trouble to keep her under him.

"You're...You're The Weasel!" he exclaimed, in awe. She scoffed and rolled her eyes, but stilled "Yeah, so?" "You're the one who sneaked in under one of the cars!" he jumped off her and grabbed one of her arms to take a look at the burn scars on her palms.

Watching this kid inspect the reminder of her injury with sparkling eyes ignited something warm inside her. Her eyes softened and she let him silently marvel over her scars.

After a few minutes, she broke her arm out of his hold "Right, I have places to be." and got up to walk away. He watched her for a few seconds, but quickly got up too and soon he caught up to her.

"What places?" he turned his head cutely to the side. She pondered quietly on how to answer him. "To see the stars." she decided and he didn't press the subject, content with the answer he got.

The rest of the way they walked silently, side by side. Coming to the window, first to climb out was Weasel, the pup right after her.

Turns out there's a small ledge outside, wide just enough to sit on. They sat, side by side, Weasel looking at the stars and the pup looking at Weasel. "Y'know, I never got your name." she said without taking her gaze away from the night sky. "It's Nux." the boy said, turning his head upwards, mimicking Weasel.

"What was it like?" he asked quietly "Riding a car." "It hurt. I haven't felt a pain greater than that." she whispered, bowing her head to look at her scars and he whipped his head to her with a shocked expression and a near silent wow escaping his lips.

They sat for another few minutes, when she felt another wave of hopelesness wash over her and she knew it was time.

Slowly,

shakilly,

she stood up,

Nux's gaze following her. "Be careful or you'll fall." he warned her softly. "I want to." she told him, tired of fighting and trying to forget how everything hurt.

Nux looked shocked, once again "What, why?" he asked with an unbelievable tone. Weasel shrugged "Everything hurts. I don't have a reason to live." she told him simply.

He frowned "That's stupid." Before she could get mad at him, Nux continued "How are you going to get to Valhalla then?"

Now it was her turn to be shocked "The what?" she asked, quirking her eyebrow, looking straight into his beautiful blue eyes. "Did nobody tell you?" At this she shook her head, confused.

Nux took a deep breath "The older war boys told me. We fight for the Immortan, because we are half lives. If we die historic on the Fury road, we spray chrome on our mouth, so we can enter Valhalla, where our half life is cured and we can live happily forever in the afterlife." he told her in one go.

Weasel frowned. She didn't want to die for old Joe. He didn't look like a saviour, she didn't trust him, why would she when he treated everyone the way he did? Nux caught her frown and asked "You don't want to get to Valhalla?"

"I don't want to die for Joe." Weasel said firmly. "Why?? Have you seen him? He's Immortan, the man who grabbed the sun!" Nux praised him, making a triangle from his hands. "Yes, I've seen him!" Weasel snapoed at him. The pup's eyes lit up like two little explosions "Really?? What's he like?" he asked excitedly.

"Illness ridden and he stinks." the girl said and stuck her tongue out at Nux. He giggled, thinking it was a joke "You're funny Weasel."

As the seconds ticked by, she realized something. Even though she didn't understand half the things Nux said about Valhalla, he called himself and everyone else a half life. She knew what that meant and he must've known too.

That could only mean he knew he was going to die, that they trained him to die. But Valhalla gave him comfort, just like to all war boys. And that was sad.

Just then, she didn't feel hatred towards war boys and war pups anymore, but sympathy. They craved the same thing she did- hope.

In that moment, she decided she wants to help them. If everyone wanted to treat them like they meant nothing, she wasn't going to. She was going to show them that their lives mattered, that they were the ones who Citadel stood on. That without them, everything would turn to ashes.

"Right, you convinced me." she told Nux and turned to climb back inside, the boy following closely behind.

As they walked back to the big cave to sleep again, she asked him "How did you know who I am?" Nux snickered "Everyone knows who you are. Being the only girl 'n all. Well, 'cept for Furiosa." and shrugged.

Furiosa was the only other girl that Weasel knew joined the war boys. She tried to befriend her, but seeing the look of disgust she sent Weasel's way made her want to throw up. So she just nodded and continued to walk silently.

At the entrance of the cave she grabbed Nux's hand, the first tiny part of her big plan already in action. "Can I stay with you?" she asked shyly, expecting to get kicked or punched for being soft, but he only nodded with a smile "At least we won't be cold."

This Page From The First Issue Of The Prelude Mini-series To MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (revealing The Backstories

This page from the first issue of the prelude mini-series to MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (revealing the backstories of both Nux and Immortan Joe) is incredibly significant because this implies so much about the resilience of the Five Wives featured in the movie.

According to official canon (since all the stories in the comic prequels were conceived by George Miller himself with help of fellow FURY ROAD writers Nico Lathouris and Mark Sexton), the Immortan gathered all the healthiest women he could find that were scattered across the Wasteland so he would be able to produce a healthy male heir given that three of his older sons were imperfect and could not carry on his twisted legacy in the desert kingdom that he created and ruled. Two (Scrotus and Corpus Colossus, pictured above) had physical deformities while one (Rictus Erectus, played by Nathan Jones in the film) had a developmental disability despite his relatively healthy exterior and physically intimidating size.

It is revealed that the first few waves of women taken to become Joe's breeders had tried and failed to sire him a healthy male child. What is troubling is the fact that Joe had imposed a strict "three strikes" policy upon them: if a breeder produced a child that had any physical or developmental imperfections, or if they delivered stillborns, or miscarried and committed any of these offences three times, then they would be cast out to languish among the Wretched populating the grounds of the Citadel.

While we will be able to find out more concrete details about the Five Wives (as well as Furiosa) in the second issue of the prequel miniseries coming out next month (to be released by Vertigo Comics, by the way), I'm now very curious as to how Angharad, Capable, Toast, Cheedo, and The Dag lasted so long under Joe's captivity and achieved the status as his "most prized breeders" considering that there was a three-strikes rule in play among his harem of imprisoned women.

[And the War Boys] would die for me, because the Immortan was God; the Immortan had chosen to come back to Earth and be with you and suffer with you..."

Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I’ve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice.

So Mad Max: Fury Road and Snowpiercer are basically complementary post-apocalyptic films that share a lot of socio-political themes and complex characters. Don't believe me? Well...

There's the totally badass chief protagonist without a left forearm who wants to defeat the antagonist ruling over the oppressed (Curtis Everett and Imperator Furiosa).

There's the taciturn secondary protagonist who is also great but really lets the chief protagonist do all the cool shit (Max Rockatansky and Namgoong Minsoo).

There's the brutal antagonist who abuses a position of power to control the lower class and not to mention having a really hideous set of false teeth (Minister Mason and Immortan Joe).

There's the gung-ho and eager-to-please adorable younger sidekick who ends up dying for a good cause (Nux and Edgar).

There's also the supporting female character who's never portrayed in a sexualized manner, and who's a bit weird and eccentric and has a heightened sense of awareness that allows her to see things before other people (Yona Minsoo and The Dag).

Featured concept art and production design sketches created for Mad Max: Fury Road

1.) A vision of the opening scenes where Max Rockatansky is ambushed and taken prisoner by a gang of War Boys as he is taken to The Citadel.

2.) A glimpse of the battle-ready War Rig rolling out of the Citadel and driven by Imperator Furiosa as she secretly smuggles the Five Wives hidden in the tanker's cargo hold.

3.) An early rendering of Coma the Doof Warrior whose job is to rouse Immortan Joe's army of War Boys by shredding industrial-strength rock music blasting from a massive wall of speakers attached aboard the Doof Wagon.

4.) A wide-angle view of Immortan Joe's war parties chasing Furiosa into the massive sandstorm containing deadly tornadoes and lightning.

5.) A drawing depicting the introduction of the Five Wives, namely: the Splendid Angharad, Capable, The Dag, Toast the Knowing, and Cheedo the Fragile. Note a major difference: in the initial production sketches, the Wives are seen without clothes while bathing after the sandstorm and even Furiosa is among them while just being topless. In the final cut of the film, we see that the Wives are covered in diaphanous white fabric even while hosing themselves down with water and removing their chastity belts and Furiosa is instead seen making repairs to the War Rig rather than joining the Wives during their cleansing session.

6.) A look at the passengers of the War Rig reacting to the violent onslaught brought upon them by Immortan Joe and his allies.

7.) An early design of Immortan Joe flanked by his loyal band of War Boys bathed in moonlight. The final look of Immortan Joe sees the antagonist sporting a full head of long white hair with his breathing apparatus simplified into that of a lower section of an animal skull covering his mouth. The War Boys seen in the film have also seen major changes from the original design concept; doing away with tribal tattoos, studded leather ensembles, and straggly strands of hair in favor of a look defined by distressed utilitarian pants and boots and shirtless upper bodies with their skin slathered in white paint/clay and sporting black grease around their eyes and foreheads, along with variations of grotesque body modifications.

Personal Observations on “Mad Max Fury Road: Furiosa #1″ by Vertigo Comics

Having read the second issue of the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel comic miniseries released by Vertigo Comics, here are some of the observations I have gathered from the official canon backstory involving Furiosa and the Five Wives. Obvious spoilers ahead for those who haven't yet read the comic and to those fair few who still haven't yet seen the film.

image

While the issue does feature the badass Imperator we all know and love, the title of the comic gives the misconception that the reader will finally learn the backstory of Furiosa and how she came to the Citadel. On the contrary, the entirety of the comic actually focuses on Furiosa and the Five Wives, with the latter group actually taking center stage as the plot of the issue details the everyday lives of Angharad, Capable, Toast, Cheedo, and The Dag under the guarding eyes of Furiosa. If anything, the comic should really be retitled to Mad Max Fury Road: Furiosa + The Five Wives given that the first issue gave equal billing with Nux and Immortan Joe. I mean, come on: even the cover of the issue highlights the Five Wives surrounding the close-up image of Furiosa, which gives the impression that it’s not just about Furiosa but also about the Wives.

That being said, the second issue is a few pages longer than the first one, which is great because that means more story for readers like us to enjoy. And because the story centers on the women of Team War Rig pre-movie, the setting of the whole issue takes place inside the Dome— the interior prison with a repurposed heavy-duty bank vault by the entrance where Immortan Joe keeps his prized breeders.

Because of this, we get to enjoy the minute details of the Dome that we only briefly see at the start of the film. There are proper glimpses of the Wives' sleeping quarters and various scenes where we see a grand piano and plenty of books stacked everywhere in the main area. It is also quite interesting to note that the prison aspect of the Dome is emphasized with exterior views of the place in several panels, which gives the impression that the section of the Citadel looks like a massive bird cage embedded into the rock tower.

It is confirmed that Miss Giddy is one of the Wordburgers—rare history people in the Wasteland whose entire skin is tattooed with various words to preserve stories of different things and people in the past. She was assigned as mentor and caregiver to the Wives and deeply hated Joe and the situation that her charges were suffering under his tyranny. Her presence in the story is so great and valuable because she was ultimately instrumental in giving the Wives a proper education that led them to rebel against Immortan Joe.

Furiosa's appearance in the story mimics her entrance in the film. We see her walking towards the entrance of the Dome with her back towards the reader in order to highlight Joe's insignia branded onto the nape of her neck. Immortan Joe assigned her to guard duty for the Wives because Rictus Erectus made a violent sexual pass towards Angharad after the Organic Mechanic performed a fertility/medical inspection on her. Joe believed that because Furiosa was a woman, there would be no funny business going on if she was the one guarding his “prized treasures”. Coupled with the fact that Joe viewed her as his most fearsome Imperator, he knew that not even his own man-child giant of a son would dare to face off against her. Later on in the story, Joe arrives in the Dome with Rictus Erectus and the Organic Mechanic in tow carrying the fanged chastity belts and forcibly demands that the Wives wear them for their blatant disobedience.

I really love the art style implemented in the comic because it shows the kind of post-apocalyptic desert grittiness that we see in the film. All the characters featured are deliberately drawn to be imperfect, including the Wives. The girls are never shown to have supermodel good-looks on the pages (i.e. The Dag was drawn to be slightly unkempt and feral-looking) which I greatly appreciated. There's even a few well-sketched panels that highlight Joe's disgusting boils and pustules when he is shown partially naked. Furiosa's design in the comic is largely faithful to her look in the movie and it's so interesting to see that she mostly keeps to the shadows when she stands watch on the Wives because it adds so much mystery to her character as a hardened and taciturn female warrior.

Let's get the bad news out the way: expect to have slightly graphic scenes involving rape, violence, and self-harm in this issue. I know a lot of fans of the movie were relieved to see that we never get to see the ordeal of the Wives onscreen, but that's because this was reserved for the prequel comics, which I personally think was a smart move on George Miller's part. Readers are warned that several parts of this comic may be triggering because of the images on display. Among the scenes that may be hard to stomach include Joe's first rape of Angharad (though again, it's never explicitly shown), Angharad attempting to abort the fetus after the Organic Mechanic confirmed her pregnancy, and Joe cruelly dragging The Dag by her hair after she lashed out at him for trying to make sexual moves on Cheedo, who is confirmed to be a virgin and the only one of the Five untouched by Immortan Joe.

This isn't to say that the comic doesn't have it's lighter moments. Apart from the gnarly mistreatment we see the Wives endure, we get to see them flourish under the loving tutelage of Miss Giddy. The comic makes good work of showing us that the Wives are really well-educated and talented women. Several panels showcase their ability to read books, play musical instruments (Capable wielding an acoustic guitar!), and even singing. It's especially telling that their capacity to hope for a better life has not diminished even under the horrors inflicted upon them by Joe. There's even a great moment where The Dag humorously cosplayed as Immortan Joe while making exaggerated impressions on their oppressor, and the other Wives had a good laugh about it. I'm really glad that despite their nightmare situation the Citadel, the Wives are still able to bond together over small things that allow them maintain a positive outlook in life.

Initially, the relationship between Furiosa and the Wives is a fraught one. Furiosa starts out as a distant and indifferent presence to the Wives that Capable actually berates her for not being the protector they all thought she was. There is even a key moment when Furiosa stopped Angharad from her abortion attempt and the other Wives immediately dogpile on her to protect their sister. The tongue-lashing that the Wives receive from Furiosa after their scuffle is exceptionally powerful and heartbreaking because it shows exactly how the two sides see each other under the circumstances they were forced into. Ultimately, the Wives come to trust Furiosa and be comfortable with her presence despite the knowledge that she is merely there to protect them from untoward male attackers and not to protect them from Immortan Joe himself. And although it is never confirmed by Furiosa herself, it is revealed by Angharad during one of their tense conversations that she knows Furiosa was once a Wife of Immortan Joe. Unless there will be another prequel issue (or a film prequel) that will put credence to this revelation, it is left to the reader to speculate on the exact circumstances that led to Furiosa's demotion (or promotion) from abused breeder to respected Imperator.

I love the fact that even though they share the same plight, there are still little details between the Wives that lets us see them as three-dimensional characters. There's a poignant scene where The Dag angrily confronts Angharad because she's Joe's "favorite" and Splendid responds by affirming The Dag's courage and initiative to protect Cheedo when she couldn't. What follows is a pivotal moment of fierce sisterhood between the five women (the birth of Angharad’s iconic words, namely: ”We are not things!”) witnessed by Miss Giddy herself. This is where you truly appreciate Angharad's position as the de facto leader of the Wives because she is fiercely vocal about them getting through their ordeal as one, that she feels the influence of Furiosa has showed them that they do have the strength to survive the world they live in, and believing that they can truly escape their situation at all costs.

The final pages of the issue are especially moving and filled with tension since it shows that Furiosa had finally reached her boiling point with Immortan Joe's bullshit and told the Wives about the "Green Place". Suffice to say, the last panels reveal that the escape of the Wives was done the night before Furiosa's supply run and the women were aided by Miss Giddy. It broke my heart to learn that the Wives actually wanted their beloved Wordburger to join them, but Miss Giddy refused knowing she was too weak and frail to survive their perilous quest. Fun fact: Furiosa managed to kill her replacement guarding the Dome's entrance with a deadly headshot so that she would be able to safely smuggle the Wives out of their prison in the dead of night and stow them in the cargo hold of the War Rig.

There Exists, For Everyone, A Sentencea Series Of Wordsthat Has The Power To Destroy You. Another Sentence

“There exists, for everyone, a sentence―a series of words―that has the power to destroy you. Another sentence exists, another series of words, that could heal you. If you’re lucky you will get the second, but you can be certain of getting the first.”

― Philip K. Dick

The Heroic But Tragic Death Of The Splendid Angharad

Things I Loved About This Scene (Even Though It Completely Killed Me Watching The End Of It):

The moment where Immortan Joe is about to shoot at Furiosa when all of a sudden, the backseat door flies open and OUT POPS ANGHARAD WHERE SHE USED HERSELF TO SHIELD HER SAVIOR FROM HER NASTY RAPIST. Swear to God, that was possibly the most metal thing I've ever seen a heavily pregnant woman do onscreen and it was such a glorious thing to watch!

For real, Angharad is literally almost suspended in midair to give Joe the most epic and defiant stare-down in cinematic history as she is held in relative safety by Capable's grip. You know this fierce and flawless desert queen was all like, "NOPE. NOT TODAY, SATAN!" Bonus "fuck yeah!" points for Capable and Toast giving equal amounts of death glares at Joe as well!

Loved that flash of complete powerlessness in Joe's shocked eyes when he saw Angharad risking her life and realizing that she really hated his fucking guts for even trying to get her and the other Wives back. Nothing has made me happier seeing this scene than a newly empowered woman taking control and using the very weakness of her vile captor to fully destroy his pathetic delusions and inflated ego.

Angharad be like "BYE FELICIA!" as the War Rig drove away and she was still hanging out the cabin to continue giving Joe her amazing death glare. YAS QUEEN! Also: amazing hairspiration moment! You can't deny that Angharad's hair looked absolutely on fucking point blowing around her face while she was staring down at Joe. Gorgeous honey blond girlfriend knows how to work her crowning glory!

As Joe was driving right next to the War Rig, the Five Wives just look at him with utter disdain (except for Cheedo who honestly looked like she was really scared). Loved the part where The Dag just hissed "Schlanger!" at Joe becuase let's be real here, he really fucking is one.

And let's not forget that it wasn't just Mom Furiosa that Angharad saved in this scene: she also saved Dad Max! Look at Angharad once again springing into action as she climbed out of the cabin with bolt cutters in hand in order to sever the chain that harpooned Max's hand. Seriously, did I mention how totally metal as fuck this flawless woman is? Also: bolt cutters are total life-savers in this world.

Loved, loved, LOVED that heart-stopping fake-out where the audience thought Angharad reacted too late to avoid the giant rocks, but nope, she totally did avoid them! Then what followed was that brief moment that warmed my heart: Angharad fixing a really proud look on her face―like she couldn't believe she was able to perform such a dangerous act―and Max giving her that adorably awkward thumbs-up like a proud father would give to his daughter accomplishing an incredible task.

But then my relief was short-lived because―spoiler alert!―when Angharad attempted to climb back in the passenger cabin, she slipped and tragically fell to her death. And as you can clearly see, she did not slip using her bloodied leg, so certain people out there can now stop indirectly blaming Max for contributing to the cause of her death, okay?! It's already devastating to watch a fan favorite like Angharad die, so let's not blame someone like Max for her demise.

I found it so heartbreaking to see Angharad's body so oddly contorted in that position as Joe held her in his grody arms. Even after so many viewings of this part, it still makes me cry to see someone so fierce and brave like Angharad die off so soon and unable to join the rest of the War Rig Family to the Green Place of Many Mothers.

"Who killed the world? No one could say, but I remember the After-Time.

It was the Age of the Immortan, the Warlord of the Wastes. His Citadel rose high against the meat-eating sun. It was here he kept his Five Wives locked up tight, all shiny and chrome; his ticket to a full-life son and heir. Their teacher was Miss Giddy, the History Woman who fed their heads with Wordburgers and smarts.

Then there were the War Boys, the Immortan's rabid warriors. As their flesh failed, the War Boys refueled at the Blood Bag Bank where the Organic Mechanic primed their pumps with healthy Hi-Octane Red. Further down were the Cog Fodder; their ragged legs powered the lifts. Below us all were the Wretched, the deformed and rotting garbage of this world.

As for us, we were the War Pups. Too young to fight, we watched and waited for our time to do war...

This was Citadel.

Oh, what a lovely day..."
