‘1-Fake a Day’ #12 (2017)

Walking up to the ever-familiar Nascar racetrack that he was so fond of visiting, John Krasinski had a light spring in his step as he pictured another full day of hanging around Matty, Matty’s garage and Matty’s precious car. Like a hyperactive child in an unattended candy store, Krasinski had such a blast the past couple of weeks that he honestly could not wait to dive back in; his feet tingling with excitement as he approached the main entrance. Wearing a white tank top with blue, pit-crew pants to fit in better; John was ready to do whatever he could to get on Matty’s good side. It was a particularly burning day and already his brow and underarms were sweating profusely, his matted top patchy with the saline liquid. Essentially skipping through the sizeable doorway, the smell of burnt rubber on sizzling asphalt as well as the gentle aroma of spilled gasoline filled his nostrils, the combined scent bringing such a nostalgic feel to the 29 year old.
As it was a Tuesday afternoon, the racetrack was mostly empty and lifeless; aside from the odd mechanic or maintenance worker fixing the metal fence that separated the cheering crowd from multiple 3-ton metal death cubes going over 120 miles per hour. Beelining straight towards the garage in the centre of the oval-shaped track, Krasinski was thrilled to see Matty there, working hard as usual. “Matty! Hey, it’s me again! Did you miss me?,” beamed John, his hair waving freely as an industrial air-con began blowing gales of cool air towards him. Matthew seemed pissed off to see the 29 year old but he was usually like that so it was probably just his default state and totally not because of a notably bothersome individual. “What do you want John?” fumed the 34 year old driver, currently covered in splatters of viscous oil as he was maintaining the underside of his vehicle; the black and yellow car suspended 2 metres in the air by a red lift device. “I came here to see you and your baby,” replied John eagerly, leaning on a large tool rack as he wiped the excess sweat from his arms and forehead. “Think I could finally give the ol’ girl a spin?” gushed an obviously enthusiastic Krasinski, drumming his fingers along the racks metal surface.
Matthew sighed loudly below the car and moved out from under the heavy vehicle, pressing a small button in his pocket to lower the car lift back down; a whining screech filling the cold garage as the lift descended. “I’ve told you this at least one hundred times John, you can’t drive the car,” expounded Matt irritatingly, his voice hoarse and scratchy from what appeared to be mild dehydration. John hung his head down slightly in disappointment, though his energy from before remained the same. “What do I have to do to drive around the track? I’ll do anything at this point,” pleaded John, his hands in a prayer clasp as he pushingly begged the other man. There was a noticeable spark in Matty’s eyes for one split second, John knowing that if he pushed a little further … he could finally get his way. “C’mon Matty, you know you want to,” chirped John, waving his arms so forcefully that he then accidentally knocked a large can of paint from the tool rack onto the floor; the clang as the tin hit the floor causing both men to jump.

the office was silent, except for the incessant tapping of the end of your blue pen against the papers scattered across your desk as you stare at the phone. there’s a red light, blinking every other second, and a double digit number on the monochrome screen beside it. you allow yourself to sigh, and lean back against your chair, relishing in the loud and annoying squeak it always made when you did so; the sound catches Jim’s attention and his brows raise, but he doesn’t look up at you.
another huff, and you lean forward, only to fall back against the chair and have it whine against the pressure. he pretends that he doesn’t hear you, but you can see the corner of his lips twitching. he’s close to his breaking point, though he’s trying his best to look invested in his work.
you know this time has to really crack him. you practically howl, voice breaking as you slam back against the back of the chair. it creaks beneath the force with a hissing squeal, and Jim scoffs, his lips curling up into an involuntary grin. “Wow,” he exclaims with a sigh as he leans back, setting his pen down. “You are persistent. You might be even more annoying than Michael.”
you giggle, rolling your eyes. “Shut up, I’m bored. I hate when we work through lunch.” you glance around the office, empty except for the two of you. they’d be coming back soon, at least. quirking a brow, your eyes fall to Dwight’s desk and you smirk. “Hey, wanna play a prank on Dwight?”
“Way ahead of you.” when you look back to your coworker, he’s gotten up from his desk, tracing into the carpet with one toe, he circles the cluster of desks backwards, and you watch, puzzled.
