dennis: as a straight m- man. as a heterosexual man (a man who isn’t attracted to men) i like- i like pina coladas… also have i mentioned i like wearing leather?

mac: i’m gay and dennis is hot

not to start reaching but it’s…suspicious how often dennis has been saying he’s straight this season.

hear me out: as far as i can remember, dennis has never called himself straight before season 13. he didn’t have to, because he was acting on it. he talked about women a lot and openly flirted with them or slept with them, but he never specifically called himself anything.

and it’s just…interesting, that mac’s finally out of the closet and has openly expressed interest in dennis, and it’s already pretty likely that this fear of his shifting relationship toward mac (and how it’s hurtling toward something a whole lot more than platonic) and their feelings for each other is what drove him out of philly in the first place.

and now, suddenly, he’s professed how Totally Straight he is at least three or four times already. but even more interesting is that dennis hasn’t actually slept with any women this season. he hasn’t even hit on any, except for when frank and that high school kid came in and started saying that they thought dennis was supposed to be this big ladies’ man and were challenging his Hetero Cred…and then dennis tried (very badly, mind you) to flirt with a woman who was definitely a lesbian anyway but i digress

and it’s just…suspicious. i know that i certainly never called myself straight that much, and certainly not that voraciously, until it had already become startlingly clear to me that i wasn’t. and only after i was trying desperately to hold onto my last hopes of not being gay, and once i was trying really hard to convince everyone around me of it too, did i start saying it a lot. i’m just saying, it feels like dennis is being so loud about being straight to fill the gap in his conversations where he’s no longer actually talking about or flirting with any women, hoping that if he keeps saying it then no one will notice that his interests have definitively shifted elsewhere.

u know what really gets me crying?? 

In “Mac Day”, Dennis is easily the most receptive to Country Mac: He almost instantly idolizes the man after he jumps off that bridge, he’s sitting next to Country Mac at the planetarium, but furthest away from him in the dojo (because the gang is plotting to get Mac’s ass kicked, and thus it’s very understandable that Dennis didn’t want Country Mac to overhear him saying such things about Mac). He laughed first/the loudest at funny/cool remarks Country Mac made, engaged in the most physical contact with him, and was also the most vocal about how much he liked Country Mac (he’s awesome, the way he rides motorbikes is badass, he gave an ocular pat down correctly). 

This all seems to heavily contrast his attitude towards Mac throughout the episode. He’s the first one to bring up all the little things he finds annoying about Mac (his karate, Project Badass, his devotion to god), even going so far as to postulate that perhaps he doesn’t hate Mac’s interests, but rather Mac himself. The others are not as vocal while Dennis prattles on about Mac, mostly just nodding and saying yes in agreement. Out of the members of the gang, it is only Dennis who thinks deeply about Country Mac’s good qualities and how those contrast with Mac’s. The others just think that Country Mac’s cool. And despite Dennis’s criticisms of Mac, it is obvious he has thought most widely about this, a hint at the depth of his feelings for Mac, however negatively he shows them.

A fascinating thing to note about this is how most of Dennis’s frustration and anger at Mac is directed specifically at Mac’s cyclical self-denial—especially when it comes to Mac’s homosexuality.

CHARLIE: Seven straight hours of lecturing?                                          

DENNIS: Yeah, and five hours alone dedicated to the evils of homosexuality, from him?

In fact, most of the decisive action Dennis takes in the episode is to break Mac out of this cycle, he wants Mac to admit he’s not as big a badass as he thinks, he wants Mac to admit that he’s gay. This desire seems to increase tenfold when Country Mac comes out to all of them.

COUNTRY MAC: Dudes. I’m into dudes.

DENNIS: Oh… you’re gay!

COUNTRY MAC: Loud and proud, brother! Loud and proud! Yeah, ain’t nothing wrong with that.

DEE: Nothing wrong with that!

CHARLIE: Honestly, it’s like, refreshing to hear. You know what, happy hunting bro, get after it.

DEE: Good luck.

COUNTRY MAC: Cool, cool, cool, I’ll see you all in a little bit.

CHARLIE: Cool, yeah, yeah. See, he doesn’t want us to grease them, y’know?

DEE: God, that’s awesome.

CHARLIE: Because he wants them!

DENNIS: It doe—right. 

CHARLIE: He wants them for himself. It’s so much more comfortable when someone’s gay and open about it. 

DEE: It’s fantastic.

CHARLIE: And, like, I know we’ve never said this as a group, but— 

DENNIS: Mac’s gay. 

As you can probably tell, Dennis becomes much less vocal after finding out that Country Mac’s gay, staying mostly silent as his gaze switches between Mac and Country Mac, only to chime right back in to declare that Mac is most certainly gay. Yup. Just the Macs. Definitely not him. He’s also the first to observe that Mac has a boner again, from being around all the beefcakes. Unlike Dennis, Mac is unable to force himself to be flaccid at will. 

So the gang moves on to the karate tournament, and Dennis comes up with the idea to sign Mac up for a fight to prove to Mac that he isn’t such an unstoppable badass, to snap him out of his delusions. The gang isn’t very certain about this, but join Dennis as he manipulates Mac into fighting through praise and goading him into wanting to prove himself. Dennis consistently asserts that teaching Mac a lesson is for his own good, and in his own twisted way, Dennis wants Mac to be the best version of himself. After the fight ends with Mac getting knocked down and Country Mac beating up Mac’s opponent in his honor, Mac is still adamant that he was more badass than Country Mac. This frustrates the entire gang, who lash out at him, but Dennis most of all who insists that Mac must admit that he got his ass kicked, and that he is not a badass. Even Dee, who was the most supportive of Dennis’s plan before, begs him to let it go because Mac Day is almost over, upon which Dennis refuses to back down, because in his words “We have a lifetime of this to look forward to!”. Despite everything Dennis has said this whole episode, he has this pre-conceived notion that he (and according to his assumption, the rest of the gang) will be with Mac for life. And that Dennis apparently intends for Mac to be a part of his life, for the rest of their lives. 

Which is why he is so shocked at the next thing the gang suggests.

DENNIS: Listen, listen. The guy is in complete denial about absolutely every aspect of his life. And there is nothing we can do about it. 

FRANK: I say we switch him out. 

DENNIS: Huh? 

FRANK: Country Mac for Paddy’s Mac. 

DEE: We send Mac to the country, bring Country Mac here. 

FRANK: Yeah, to the bar. 

CHARLIE: That’s not a bad idea. I mean, look, we’d be safer with an actual badass in the bar. 

Although he ends up agreeing with the plan, it is important to note how Dennis expresses the most disbelief when Frank suggests this, and remains in shock for a good moment, being the last one to respond to this idea, which is intriguing given how he’s led the gang in most of their anti-Mac talks all day, dominating most of the conversations. So why is it that he’s so slow to respond to this idea?

It appears that no matter what he says about the man, Dennis is the most attached to Mac, most unwilling to let Mac go. Which is funny, given how he was practically over Country Mac the second he died, and was already denouncing most of Country Mac’s “cool” traits at the funeral. 

alright so i have a macdennis theory please everyone gather around and turn your phones on silent for the duration of my lecture

(s13 spoilers ahead)

it’s pretty obvious at this point that mac has Big Feelings for dennis so the biggest question now is whether dennis feels the same. everything between season 1 and 12 has been discussed already so i’m gonna focus on a very specific time frame instead, the last two minutes of season 13′s first episode

so dennis returns and the gang goes back to normal, he calls dee a bird and she’s visibly upset by it, then he asks if mac’s gained weight, which we saw earlier in the episode upsets mac. basically, dennis comes back and insults mac and dee. that’s nothing new, dennis has been a dick to these two for a long time, but this time it’s a clear focus in the short time he was present in the episode.

but why? why mac and dee? because he hates them, right? at least he says he does, but we know he doesn’t hate dee. in the gang broke dee, dennis is the only one not in on the joke and ends up chasing his sister down to say he loves her and begs her to stay. later in the gang goes to hell part 2 dennis tells dee he loves her again when he thinks they’re all about to die

so when dennis insults dee, he’s doing it to cover up that he holds familial love for her. a symptom of BPD is that a person will go to great lengths to avoid perceived rejection or abandonment, so dennis distances himself from his Big Feelings by minimizing them and insulting the people he loves because he’s already expecting rejection from them (something that actually happened both times he said he loved dee). it’s self-preservation

what about when he insults mac? it’s not reasonable that he’d expect rejection since mac is very clearly in love and dennis knows this. newsflash, asshole: BPD isn’t reasonable. actually, mac’s feelings make it worse. if dennis acknowledges them and his own feelings as well, there’s a chance that down the road mac would stop loving him. so instead of accepting his love, dennis rejects mac before mac gets the chance to reject him. this has already happened a few times on the show, most notably in flowers for charlie and PTSDee where he leads mac on to get the validation that those feelings are there but rejects them before anything can happen. again, it’s self-preservation

alright, so back to the last two minutes of season 13′s first episode. dennis returns and insults mac and dee. if this has happened so many times before, why is it meaningful now? because the first episode sets up storylines. clearly season 13 is gonna be different and will most likely delve deeper into the characters. for example, the camera focused on dee’s reaction after dennis called her a bird, showing how affected she was, and while she’s always been upset, the focus hasn’t been on that because it wasn’t going to be addressed.

regarding macdennis, a big focus of the episode was how badly mac had been coping compared to the others. the sex doll could’ve been a cardboard cutout, but it wasn’t because apparently it’s important for the audience to know that mac really wants to fuck dennis. the jokes go on too long and too consistently to be just jokes. so if there was a focus on mac’s feelings for dennis, and dennis insulting him along with dee, it’s not unreasonable to conclude that those feelings are gonna be addressed. why focus on them otherwise?

as a non-macdennis sidenote, i am so down to see dee standing up against the bird jokes and against dennis. something about dennis’ behavior is definitely gonna be addressed this season

ngl im a sadist watching macdennis shippers discussing thousands of theories on every upcoming episode that will take further or finally confirm macdennis and then it doesnt happen

mac canonically thinks back on any given moment he spent with dennis and goes, “oh, actually? we were holding hands when that happened”

and dennis canonically thinks this over and goes, “you know what? yeah”

Mac Finds His Pride meanings:

1. Mac is more open and prouder than ever to be gay

2. Mac discovers and joins an lgbt group, “his pride” referring to a collection of like-minded people

AND/OR

3. Mac is able to be proud of Dennis finally being open about himself and his emotions with him

Mac obtains what is his pride (which is a healthier Dennis) and can be happy at his loved one’s personal achievement, knowing that he had a part in him making that progress and getting to be there for him for it.

Dennis is Mac’s pride.

Mac finds Dennis.

(Mac is able to see Dennis and discover parts of him that have been concealed because of what happens)

Additionally, Mac finding “his pride” doesn’t have to mean only his own (as he already seems comfortable with being totally open with his sexuality, though if it’s true that he still has insecurities that make him reluctant to do certian things then that would be addressed) in that Mac could “find his pride,” Dennis’ pride.

Mac also seems proudest of being gay and most comfortable with it when it’s in relation to Dennis.

Looks like Mac ended up adopting Dennis’ mannerisms and flitty dramatic speeches to compensate for his absence
