Moving Pictures - Tumblr Posts
i feed the birbs (at this point they started backing off)

And i re read Moving Pictures
For those who want to know, I'll probably be posting the Rincewind (rjincewand) fic in a few hours, but i must warn you it's not beta read lol
No because Gaspod was an absolute ICON. He IS The Character and deserves more recognition
I mean, come on:
Traumatic and dark past
Sarcastic and snarky while still being funny
Cares about people more then he'll admit
His height 📉 his ego 📈
He is LITERALLY The Wonder Dog
Chosen multiple times by Fate (or whoever chose him to be in Moving Pictures and M@A)
Saved the world and presumed dead by the first people to care about him
Values his freedom over a home (end of M@A, Carrot and Vetinari get him a home and a family with kids, but he runs away)
Similar to Vimes, he knows every part of Ankh-Morpok by smell
At the end of the day, he doesn't want to go save people, but SOMEONE has to
"Maybe Dean seems bi because Jensen wants to sleep with Misha!" perhaps, but have we also considered Jensen actually didn't act at all on spn and instead blacked out and got possessed by the spirit of Dean Winchester every time they pointed a camera at him?
tom sawyer?
omg, tom sawyer!
i love that song, and ik that most ppl know that song and its a bit overrated but still love to jam to it.
moving pictures in general is a really great album, an album i actually have a copy of. probably my favorites on that album is the camera eye, witch hunt and red barchetta.

(try to humanize Gaspode and Laddie from Moving Pictures, Discworld novel by Terry Pratchett)
You missed the absolute best part. Right after the part about why the two groups are going to the island, he mentions he made a mistake and swapped his notes

Anyway, Terry Pratchett invented the Our Blessed Homeland / Their Barbarous Wastes meme, almost 25 years before Tom Gould got around to it
I ended up snagging Moving Pictures from the library bc why not
Yall
Did you know this is the first book where Ridcully is introduced? I remembered it was a Wizard book but it's been so long and the main dude is some dude I dunno he hasn't shown up yet and I think this is only the 2nd or 3rd time I've read this one
RIDCULLYYYYYYY I love him
This one also has the fabulous line about the final--or at least penultimate--frontier. And some good Alchemist jokes too
Highlights from Moving Pictures
Ahhh the alchemists guild

The FACIAL HAIR

The facial hair one is my favorite. But I'm also very fond of Smells vs Explosions
Moving Pictures, Terry Pratchett
Basically, this one’s okay, in the damned-by-faint-praise sense of okay.
I remembered Moving Pictures as kind of a B- or even C-tier Pratchett book, but I decided to give it another read. (See when I reread Pyramids I liked it more than I expected)
Within the Discworld there are the “topic” books. They usually are standalone, and they’re about a topic, and they’re... okay? Like there’s Moving Pictures and Soul Music and Pyramids. But some of the “topic” books are pretty good (like Small Gods, The Truth, Going Postal, Making Money, and Raising Steam). Unfortunately, Moving Pictures isn’t one of them.
The weakness of the topic books is that they kind of are a vehicle for jokes and references about a topic. If I was more into cinema and cinema history, I’m sure I’d have found this one a lot funnier. But the central plot is weak. I assume that’s because Pratchett was just not as strong a writer at this point in his career.
I read Moving Pictures. It gave me a popcorn craving. It kind of didn’t feel like it had a central theme that resonated.
Good points
Gaspode the Wonder Dog
Ridcully the Brown (and the Bursar, pre-breakdown)
some good jokes about the alchemists
we get to see CMOT Dibbler really starting to fulfill his epic destiny (flimflam salesman of the highest degree)
I probably will read it again, when enough time has passed that I forget how overwhelmingly ‘eh okay’ the book is, but it probably won’t be for a long time
I love how in older movies, they are very worried about whether or not the viewer realizes the movie has ended. Like everyone will ride into the sunset, or walk out of the courtroom after winning a case, and the producers are like, "Do you think it's too subtle? Do you think they realize it's over?" So just to be safe, in big, fancy letters, they write, "The End" to ensure everyone knows the movie is over. Did they really think we were just gonna stare at a black screen and wonder when the "intermission" will end? lol

Oh god i haven't heard this one in a while

This is the only thing that makes me feel genuine fear
