Police Brutality - Tumblr Posts - Page 3
Question: I fully agree that ACAB, but I've always wondered what police forces should be replaced with, seeing as how organizations like the KKK and all these racist militias like the Minutemen (and of course, Zimmerman) are technically private citizens.
That is an excellent question, Anonymous! While most of us take their existence for granted, the truth is that the concept of having a police force is fairly modern, dating back to the early 19th century. Prior to that, many societies relied on full-community participation to ensure that its members behaved themselves. Neighbours helped each other. Some societies formalized this concept somewhat. Medieval England used something called the “frankpledge system,” wherein all males over the age of 12 would form small groups of ten, all of whom swore an oath to capture and detain members of their own clans who committed a crime. This was eventually replaced by a constabulary system where all males would serve as constables for one year, keeping watch on their community. If something was amiss, they could sound the alarm and all males in the community would come to their aid. It wasn’t until the population explosion that accompanied the Industrial Revolution that we began to see what we would recognize as modern police forces. There are examples of similar systems existing even today. In the Spanish village of Marinaleda (pop. 3,000) there are no police. When their last police officer retired, the village didn’t replace him, instead choosing to focus its resources on ensuring its citizens’ needs are taken care of and coming together as a community when problems arise instead of calling the police. Remarkably, crime is nearly nonexistent there. There’s also this article outlining six ways to reduce, if not eliminate, our reliance on police. Bolstering mental health resources, decriminalizing non-violent offences (especially drug offences), deploying unarmed mediation/intervention teams, and other ideas would greatly reduce and possibly eliminate our reliance on armed police. If any of these ideas - or a combination of them - resulted in even a 1% drop in the incarceration rate in America, 20,000 fewer people would be in prison and $800 million in tax funds could be spent on better things.
or you could, you know, try not having police

Make noise, please.
Right now, people are being murdered by the police and ESMAD. They are trying to do LIVE transmissions on social media and they're being censored.
MAKE NOISE, PLEASE. Let the world know about this. Reblog, repost, share the news. Talk about this. This needs to be known. People in Colombia are being killed by the government

S.O.S COLOMBIA
While this happens in Bogotá, on the night of the 4th of may Cali and the city surroundings power and internet were shut down, leaving them without in the dark without being able to report the massacre that's going down there.
They're censoring Cali, won't let them post videos, they're incommunicado while being massacred.
not maiko related, but this a very important post about what's going on in my country Colombia, it'd mean a lot if you read this until the end and help me spread it. I'll try to be as brief as possible.
tw// police brutality, murder, blood, sexual assault
Seven days ago Colombians have been protesting (yes, in the middle of a pandemic because the goverment happens to be more dangerous than a virus) for a couple of reasons like a tax reform, health reform, murder of social and enviromental leaders and alarming increase of femicides. The things is, protests in all the cities have always been peaceful, but the goverment is not only not listening to us but ordering to attack us and kill us. We're being noticed by others thanks to social media only (like twitter, facebook) where people are using hashtags, making livestreams and asking for help because the media in our country isn't speaking for us, we're being silenced and censored so the international media and other countries don't know about the abuse and violence we're going through.

All we want is other people know about what's going on so we can get the help we need, I'm using this platform to make it possible because the censorship by the Colombian media prevents the world and even colombians themselves from seeing the excessive abuse of the armed forces.
here are some twitter threads where there's more detailed info, please help us spread, please reblog, RT🙏🙏🙏🙏

What is happening in Colombia right now?

If this happened in the United States, people would be outraged. Internacional media is not talking about this. Please, reblog this! Let the people of Colombia be heard!
The media in Colombia is covering up the violence and police brutality against innocent people. Police death squads are shooting at civilians right now, WE NEED HELP
HERE UPDATE
Please be aware, talk about, and share what's happening in Colombia 🇨🇴
Their government decided to rise taxes, yes I'm the middle of the pandemic crisis, which would affect the lower and middle class the most (because they were the ones "who got extra help"), and so the people exercised their constitutional right to speak up against it, and walk the streets asking for it to STOP.
But the government has given instruction to KILL their citizens. We are talking about murder by police and soldiers by government order. We know they have been going into the houses, take out men, women, and children alike and kill them. They are being shot in the streets.
They have been cutting electricity at night to keep them in the dark.
It's a CRIME against humanity what is happening right now. Please be aware, look into it, talk about it. Colombia needs us to speak up for them, because they're being silenced with bullets.
Latinoamérica sangra y son los de saco y corbata los que siempre jalan el gatillo.

Bogotá, Colombia.

La ciudad de México, México.

for people who are unaware of why the riots in minneapolis started happening, here’s the facts:
it wasn’t george floyd’s protesters who started reacting violently; it was the cops.
the protest was peaceful until the cops showed up in riot gear, and started using water cannons, followed up by tear gas and rubber bullets. i got videos from friends who were there, of people screaming and running away from the cops shooting the water cannons, rubber bullets and throwing tear gas at them. they were even shooting at the protesters dragging people away to get medical attention.
speaking of medical attention, dispatch refused to provide any medical attention to the protesters. people literally had to drive their bleeding friends to the hospital because they refused to send ambulances.
cops are using non-lethal weapons in a lethal way. they shot rubber bullets into people’s heads and injured them. there’s dozens of photos of protesters with bleeding head wounds from the rubber bullets.
multiple people used police scanners and heard that there were undercover cops pretending to be violent protesters who were throwing rocks and whatnot at the police, with dozens of eyewitness accounts confirming that information.
the person who instigated all the chaos last night (it was a fire at an autozone) with the looting and burning buildings is highly suspected to be an undercover cop pretending to be a protester, because the video of him keeps getting taken down. protesters tried to stop him but couldn’t because he had a hammer and they were scared for their safety.
the cops jammed cell phone towers and cut live streams to interrupt broadcasts and to prevent people from seeing what was really going on and who actually started the violence.
the cops lied about protesters being armed and about throwing rocks and are literally trying to continue the violence happening and yet no one is holding them accountable for that.
and during all this, the cop that murdered george floyd still hasn’t been arrested. he has had more than ten complaints filed against him and was involved in three other civilian shootings in the past. and yet he’s still out free along with his three other buddies involved, probably sitting on his couch while all this chaos is happening.
so don’t get it twisted. the cops just want to change the narrative to make it look like they’re the wounded and righteous party, when they’re the ones who started reacting violently in the first place and are still acting violently. so don’t you ever forget who started this tragedy and murdered someone, and who are continuing to react to the situation with violence.

END SARS
END POLICE BRUTALITY IN NIGERIA
This hits so close to home for me...this little girl was one day older than I am...ONE DAY. She deserved to have a life, a family, and to follow her dreams. I will never stop saying ACAB until there are no more stories like Aiyana’s,Treyvon’s, Michael’s, George’s, Philando’s, or Sandra’s.

RIP Aiyana Jones, who was killed in her sleep by police 7 years ago this week. black kids deserve to grow up too. #BLM

When I was twenty I was almost shot by a police officer because of my mental illness. I was peeling bark off a tree on public property to calm my anxiety.
Two officers pulled up very quietly in a squad car while I had my back turned. They did not announce their arrival. When I noticed them approaching me by the sound of their footsteps, I was frightened and reached for my phone to record them. They thought I was going for a weapon and one reached for his pistol. I put my hands up.
They illegally detained me and took my ID to run a background check. The one who had started to draw his gun on me asked me if I’d had any thoughts of hurting myself or others.
My background check came up clean. They released me and told me I wasn’t doing anything illegal. I went to my car and bawled my eyes out, thinking about how I’d almost died for the crime of “weird behavior.”
Don’t give these pigs a registry of the mentally ill. They’re already trying to kill us for no good reason.

Anyways, Breonna Taylor
Breonna Taylor - On March 13, 2020, Breonna Taylor lay sleeping with her boyfriend Kenneth Walker.
Outside police silently gathered, preparing to raid what they believed to be a residence linked to two drug dealers.
One of these drug dealers was thought to be receiving mail at Taylor’s apartment, resulting in a judge signing a search warrant with a “no knock” provision.
The warrant claimed that a US Postal Inspector confirmed that the dealer had been receiving packages at the apartment. Postal Inspector Tony Gooden has said that his office had told police there were no packages of interest being received there.
Taylor and Walker were awoken by a loud bang at the door.
Taylor yelled “Who is it?” multiple times to no response before Walker armed himself with a legally owned firearm.
Walker fired 1 shot before the officers returned with over 20 rounds. Taylor was shot at least 8 times. No drugs were found in the apartment.
Breonna Taylor worked as an EMT. She aspired to be a nurse and had no criminal past. She was working during the coronavirus crisis.
On May 29, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer indefinitely suspended the use of “no knock” warrants. The shooting is currently under investigation.

On the Beat
Before I get into this post I wanna make something clear: I don't hate cops. My grandfather was in the force and I was raised to show them respect. Or to at least not be so sarcastic and argue back. To my mother's eternal relief, I have not done either of the last two things.
If you know me in real-life, you will know that this is quite a feat.
At no point is it a good idea to beat the crap out of people.* I know that the urge can be strong (I know...I feel it too sometimes) but you just don't do it. Be smart and trick them into beating themselves up; call the cops on them; get all youtube on their asses. Whatever! Just choose an option that's satisfying and pretty much legal.
I'd been following the case of the drunk cops who beat up some students while off-duty.
I think what really got me was one (now-former) officer's reason for wanting to escape conviction:
[Patrick Garty] wanted to escape a conviction so he might one day apply to become a policeman in Queensland.
Really? Really, really? Dude. There are cops beat up defenceless people in Queensland too. You woulda been fine!
Seiously though, this kinda stuff makes me sad.
* Okay, sometimes it can be a good idea. But very rarely. Like, two moons in the sky rare. It needs to be saved for the seriously fucked up shit, like the people who take a 'hands on' approach to little kids. Are we clear? Good.
