People who have regular body heat don't experience cold the way we do. They apparently have this little heater inside of them that just, keeps their blood and internal organs comfy all the time. Being "cold" to them is just a chill on their skin. "If you're still cold after the first layer, put another layer on!" That doesn't work if you don't have the body heat to warm up those layers!!! it's just cold fabric on top of cold fabric on top of cold fabric on top of cold skin on top of cold fat on top of cold muscle on top of cold bones.
Then of course, even if there are FINALLY enough layers to make our skin warm. That does not mean it will make our bones warm. I could have an electronically heated blanket on me, and start sweating from it, and STILL BE COLD because it takes a lot of time for any amount of heat to pierce the surface level of my body & warm me in any ways that matter. So yeah, anytime you're interacting with somebody who doesn't have temperature regulation issues, and they offhandedly mention that they love the cold, just be aware they are never ever talking about our kind of cold. the kind that feels like an uphill battle. They're talking about something completely different and unique to them and their little internal heater. something some of us may never experience because we're always trapped in that fight with the air around us.
I did a thing go look at it if u wanna see chronic pain stuff :D

Hi! Your "talking about wheelchair blues" post made me curious if you know any disabled folk singers?
Yea, there are actually tons!
in the early blues, there were many blind artists.
Blind Blake (1896-1934) Blind Willie Johnson (1897-1945) Blind Lemon Jefferson (1893-1929) Blind Willie McTell (1898-1959) Bo Carter (1893-1964) Sleepy John Estes (1899-1977) Blind Boy Fuller (1907-1941) Cortelia Clark (1906-1969) Rev. Gary Davis (1896-1972) Roosevelt Graves (1909-1962) Sonny Terry (1911-1986)
there's also cisco houston, whose eyesight was so poor that it rendered him legally blind by the end of his life.
and then, of course, there was woody guthrie who suffered from Huntingtons disease.
A LOT of traditional folk singers were disabled but that fact about them was not mentioned or only mentioned as an afterthought, or it isn't considered a disability. it would be very hard to compile all of these people.
and, as classic artists like pete and peggy got and get older, they both talked more about disability rights and how they affect them, peggy seeger is 89 currently and still making music. both she and Pete have either performed songs like disability in solidarity with disabled people or made music about how being disabled relates to them.
THEN, there's the Disabled In Action (DIA) singers. much like the Freedom Singers of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Disabled in Action singers were a musical group that made and covered songs that were about disability rights and disability made upof members with from the DIA organization. the DIA is a grassroots civil rights organization focused on ending discrimination against Disabled people, founded in 1970, in NYC.
the folks of the Disabled in Action Singers were not very well known, and the only one who was, was Sis Cunningham, who joined the group in her eighties.

luckily for us ! they have all their recordings available on their website.
here's some fun live performances i found as well of songs either by the DIA singers or by other people about disability
There is definitely more and I'll reblog this whenever I find more disabled folk artists. if anyone knows any contemporary disabled folk artists feel free to reblog this as well. I know that people in the folk-punk scene have been making music about disability.
*lays down and back hurts*
*stands up and knees and ankles hurt*
*sit down and hips hurt*
yall. I just woke up. It is 3:07 am. Why did I wake up you ask?
because my dumb fucking body hurts so much and I can’t do anything about it. I’m gonna go take a hot shower and see if that helps

professionals: they so often don't understand how tiring being tired is, they don't understand pain. they see a broken foot and assume that is the worst pain imaginable. they don't get it. they never have, they pretend to understand with floral words of affirmation and reminders... but… some don't see the late nights spent silently screaming and shaking and begging for it all to stop.
when they don't understand the desire to just stop being in pain; they don't realise a lot of us would rather be decaying than continue with a life we know is doomed to constant pain.
instead, a story is printed using medical jargon, forgetting the humanity stood behind the shroud of professional language.
but yet, there's always one. somewhere out there is a professional who will believe you, who will listen and help you to improve, who will love you and care about you, not just your anomaly...
we must remember that behind the medical jargon, we are people. behind the labels... we will never stop being people. and nothing will take that from us. we are allowed to be angry. we are allowed to feel. we are allowed to grieve the life that could have been without the pain. it's okay to be sad over your symptoms. it's okay to feel.
but, please, never give up.
never forget you're worth it. never forget you're beautiful. never stop fighting to live, even if it is only in the little ways.

Disability services interactions be like
ds: we can offer a support person, or home help, or some level of assistance!
me: ...but i don't want a support person?
ds: we can offer a supportive person to help you live better
me: i just said i don't want a support person
ds: we can give you home help and someone to keep you company
me: are you completely ignoring me. i want to keep what freedom i have left.
ds: we can offer support person, you can pick them, we don't chose them for y--
me: i want to stay as independent as possible!!!!!! i've already lost most of my life to my disability! i was told you'd help me find ways to be independent. having a person to help me will ruin my mental health because i hate being seen as incapable.
ds: oh.
ds: we can offer a support person!
disabled system asks: 1-4, 10!
1. Is your disability invisible, visible or both?
Both: invisible in the way that there appears to be nothing outwardly wrong with us (as doctors kindly keep reminding me) but visible in the way that we use mobility aids almost all the time. We wear a sunflower lanyard in public, and use a mixture of a cane, crutches and a wheelchair depending on the day.
I wish to add, as someone who has looked able bodied, and disabled in various fonts.. people don’t treat disabled people better if they’re in a wheelchair or visibly ill, and some are arguably worse to young wheelchair users.
2. Do you use mobility aids? If so, what for?
We do! As said above. We have a mixture of issues (ranging from endometriosis to POTS to hEDS to fibromyalgia) that create.. well, a mixture of issues XD. We’ll use the wheelchair on bad pain and fatigue days and carry the crutches.. or, on better days, just use the crutches to take some pressure off our knees, and aid as balance. As cool as our cane looks (photos later), we stopped using it as it was giving us pretty severe hip pain on one side from the way we had to lean to get support from it (still my fav visually though).
3. Is there a specific alter/part/headmate who fronts to deal with pain? How do they manage it?
Yes, that would be me. I split when we were very young to deal with injury, particularly blood. As our chronic pain increased, so did the amount of time I spent fronting, until I slowly became our most common fronter. Sucks though, cuz that was never meant to be my job, I was supposed to stay sitting on the sidelines only appearing to deal with first aid and other protector things. Instead, I’m here, and somehow I make it everyone else’s problem.
My appearance as most common fronter got us outed as a system because I’m so drastically different from the common fronters of the time. {its a little more complicated than that but you get the idea}
I manage it with a combo of pain killers (including medicinal CBD, THC, and flower, pregabalin, panadol, ibuprofen, codeine and morphine amongst other things… happy to answer questions about any of them if you’re curious), dissociation, weaponised tears and sheer fucking willpower… I wish I could say sheer fucking will was still working, but it is not very well anymore. There’s only so much one can deal with, and our pain has been getting steadily worse for the past few years with very little support (most of our illnesses have no cure, only management). We’ve reached the point where our doctors and specialists aren’t sure what to do with us and are wondering if there’s something they have missed…but uh, our tests, bloods and results are coming back clean. Looking into that at the moment lol.
4. Do you experience pain variety based on who’s fronting?
Oh hell, do we ever. Certain members of the system *cough* Kyle *cough* have dreadful pain tolerances - I always know when one of them is cocon because our pain skyrockets into impossible levels, even if I’m trying to keep it under control. Certain other members of our sys have average pain tolerances, some age regress to cope, others just curl up in a ball and sob.. depends on the alter - and the cyclical nature of parts of our pain make it difficult to manage, and to recognise how each alter is affected. Plus, it’s hard to compare pain tolerances when each of us have no other/barely any frame of reference.
10. Do you decorate your aids?
YES. We use a combination of spray paint, cheap nail polish, stickers and in the case of the wheelchair, holders designed for prams and bikes (water bottle holder, clips, bells, reflective stripes etc).. aids start out super boring and for us, decorating them and making them prettier is the only way to make them tolerable. And political - if the government is going to make our life into a political ‘issue’, we will turn right back around and make them aware of our existence ;)
the pic doesn’t grasp it very well, but we painted the chair’s spokes rainbow (and they look super cool when we’re driving it)
Thanks to @disabled-systems for the game <33

It is very punk to not take an all or nothing approach to shit.
Just like your post above. I’m with you on treating neurodivergent folk like, you know, people. And I’m with you on staring a broken system in the eye and saying ‘fuck you, I know me better than you do’ and looking at self-diagnosis for some conditions.
I sure as fuck hope you’re not talking about being too punk to wear a fucking mask in public to protect people from a disease. There’s nothing punk about saying ‘I’m fine, I won’t get sick, so fuck you.’
You say you’re punk but are you normal about it when someone asks you to wear a mask?
You say you’re anti-establishment but are you normal about self-diagnosis?
You say you’re an ally to neurodivergent people but are you normal about people with personality disorders? People with low/no empathy? Are you normal about psychotic people?

When I was twenty I was almost shot by a police officer because of my mental illness. I was peeling bark off a tree on public property to calm my anxiety.
Two officers pulled up very quietly in a squad car while I had my back turned. They did not announce their arrival. When I noticed them approaching me by the sound of their footsteps, I was frightened and reached for my phone to record them. They thought I was going for a weapon and one reached for his pistol. I put my hands up.
They illegally detained me and took my ID to run a background check. The one who had started to draw his gun on me asked me if I’d had any thoughts of hurting myself or others.
My background check came up clean. They released me and told me I wasn’t doing anything illegal. I went to my car and bawled my eyes out, thinking about how I’d almost died for the crime of “weird behavior.”
Don’t give these pigs a registry of the mentally ill. They’re already trying to kill us for no good reason.
anyone else feel like people who preach "if you buy from amazon/chains you're a poser" is sort of classist and ableist? we're living in a society run on capitalism where these could be someone's only way to be able to afford things for hobbies or just to make life easier
also if you're a punk kid who's parents use amazon there's no need to feel guilty for also buying off of it if there aren't better options. i always say buy second hand or diy but if there isn't any other options you're not a bad person man
this isn't the 70s anymore and amazon is worth 1.81 trillion. keep your mental health safe and focus on what's important: standing up for those who can't
