Thinking about Gideons "are you EVER too late to come into my life and say that now" feeling betrayed by the fact that someone knew she was out there and didn't come for her all those years vs Pyrrha's "but why'd you bring along the baby" when she's literally about to let Wake kill her. Gideon felt so alone and she's so used to feeling alone that she lashes out at the first suggestion that maybe she wasn't as unloved as she thought because in the moment it just hurts even more but god. Nineteen years and Pyrrha still fucking haunted by Gideon. Her last words trying to find out why Wake would put Gideon in danger. Not why the Ninth, not why let me kill you, not did you ever love me. Why'd you bring the baby. Wake, why did you have to do that to our baby. God. Pyrrha thought Gideon was her fucking baby. Like we talk about Pyrrha saying she never mentioned the baby to John because she thought it was hers but we're ignoring the fact that she found out the baby wasn't hers THIRTY SECONDS AGO. She's been mourning her dead kid for NINETEEN YEARS and she just found out that not only was said kid alive and suffering alone for all those years, shes NOT EVEN HER KID. And still! And still! Pyrrha immediately risks everything to save Gideon. Never considers leaving Gideon behind for an instant. Not for a moment. Live or die she was not leaving that girl's side. And I don't think Pyrrha was disappointed that Nona wasn't Gideon but it really says something that she was so willing to care for this body which was the last place she saw her daughter. Buying her a half-birthday present because what if they don't have birthdays on the Ninth. Thinking about nineteen years that Gideon was alone and she was angsting about it alone in space when she should have been helping her. God. Jesus fucking christ. Pyrrha Dve.

i have a question about jon's naming convention of people. like. whole numerical thing is another thing i have thoughts about but. how many languages he knew?

bcs pyrrha surname "dve" feels like it came straight outta slavic mouth. two - russian "dva" - dve.

nigella surname is shodash, hindi word for 16. not even six. sixteen.

why do these two stick out? other cavs surnames have latin roots as far as i know. is it miss tamsyn ideas overruling the question 'how the would he know these words if every dictionary is burnt with apocalypse?' is it intentional?

I love that everybody betrayed John. He absolutely deserved it, and in addition to being tragic, it’s very, very funny. He resurrected his friends and wiped their memories and turned them into disciples, Lyctors who would never leave him, who would live forever and be forever his. And then we, as readers gradually find out how badly his control has frayed, how thin he has worn the love and loyalty of his friends. Judith Deuteros blurts out that there’s a traitor aboard the Mithraeum, and we spend a good third of Harrow the Ninth wondering who it could be, but then surprise, it’s everybody. Everybody betrayed the Emperor. Cytherea betrayed him to Blood of Eden long before her rampage at Canaan House. Augustine betrayed him, and Mercymorn betrayed him, and Augustine and Mercymorn worked together to betray him and sell him out to his worst enemy. Gideon Prime fell in love with the same worst enemy, but didn’t exactly commit treason, however Gideon Prime’s secretly conscious cavalier Pyrrha did. And then in Nona the Ninth, we find out that Cassiopeia already betrayed him millenia ago, in a methodical, well-thought-out and quintessentially Sixth way that took her entire House with her. Et tu, Kiriona?

i beg all the gods for an au where pyrrha got to raise gideon. i bet my ass just single presence of pyrrha in gideon's life would have saved our girl from a couple (hundreds) mental breakdowns.

Thinking about how Pyrrha asked Wake if Pash was really a nice kid and Wake laughed and said of course not she's related to me. And then Pyrrha got to spend time with Gideon and Gideon was Like That and Pyrrha must have thought back to that moment a few times. And she still wanted her because it doesn't matter who the sperm donor was that's their kid. Their mean bitter traumatised sarcastic scared little girl. I'm just gonna curl up for a sec excuse me

Workshopping Pyrrha’s Nicknames for Gideon

We all know that Pyrrha Dve is a serial nicknamer of her kids from Nona, so I’ve been making a running list in my head of nicknames she might use for Gideon. I don’t think she would want to use any of the names she gave Nona (other than all-purpose ones like kid), so she gets an all new set.

Junior- A pretty obvious one, but it feels significant that Pyrrha had two people in her life she loved named Gideon.

Gid/Gid-Kid/Giddo/GG- Again, obvious. Some riffing on names is to be expected.

Sunshine- Starts off ironic and stays that way right up until the moment Pyrrha sees Gideon genuinely smile for the first time.

Romeo/Loverboy/Prince Charming- Obviously reserved for teasing Gideon when she’s mooning over Harrow. She hopes it communicates that she’s rooting for them.

Chickadee- No real reason behind this one I just think it’s really cute. Gideon of course has no idea what a chickadee is.

Baby Girl- For a long time, Pyrrha never says this one aloud. She worries it’s too much, forcing her feelings on a girl whose wounds from life are too big and too raw. But Gideon has been her Baby Girl practically since the moment she first saw her. When she thought she might be hers and when she knew she wasn’t. All those years she grieved for her. When she learned that she lived eighteen years past anyone’s expectations, only to die and become a chewed up cavalier’s soul just like her. When she might have been Nona and when she definitely wasn’t, standing in front of her a living corpse powered by barely contained rage and despair. And finally there’s a moment when her Baby Girl is right there, alive and whole and healing, that she finally dares to say it out loud. And it’s in this moment it finally sinks in for Gideon that she really does have a mother that loves her.

yeah okay but consider this: if Harrow had any chest at all, Gideon would’ve mentioned it. Also, Pyrrha taught Nona (in Harrow’s body!) to stuff her bra in ntn. no chest nonagesimus remains canon

Thinking about what Dios Apate Minor must've been like for Gideon Prime, and like.

Imagine your dinner nearly killed you the other day because the new kid your boss will not let you stop trying to kill finally took matters into her own hands. Fair enough, you can respect that, you'd prefer not to be doing all this either. Your dead ex is haunting the body of your recently deceased coworker, suffice it to say you have other problems.

Then a day or two later everyone shows up to dinner dressed to the nines. Nobody thought to tell you there was a party going on. You feel a bit awkward, and then they break out the wine, and you just know it's all about to get Worse. Because now your coworkers are talking about their dead best friends, and you know that never ends well.

They start talking about your dead best friend, talking about her appearance like being hot was the only thing she deserves to be remembered for. You remember that she had at least a dozen nicknames for everyone. Sometimes it feels like she's still here with you, but you will never find out for certain. All you have left is her green eyes in your face.

They still won't let you forget about your ex, either, refusing to let you live down a relationship you only half remember. You're still the only one who knows she's here. You're convinced that the new kid knows more than she says, but you have no way of confirming this.

You leave long before the threesome starts. You've got too much unfinished business to sit around talking about ghosts.

Okay but can you imagine if G1deon was the one who found Wake's body? G1deon "Thought it was my kid" just thinking Alecto possessed the baby or something. Just trying to raise her in secret, not living with John but everytime John visits or makes an unexpected phone call G1deon is aggressively hiding baby toys in the closet or cradling this baby hoping it doesn't start crying during the call It's not until Kiriona is like, 5 that G1deon is like "I don't think my baby is possessed by Alecto, and I'm starting to have some questions for my boss"

I HAVE IMAGINED IT, I think it would be

1) frankly cute. G1deon gives me vibes of someone who needs SOMETHING to latch himself to, and it's usually killing people and/or John but I think if he decided "I'm going to look after this baby" he WILL look after the baby. He will look after that baby so hard

2) Hilarious? That baby is the culmination of a plan 500 years in the making. A chubby-faced Destroyer of Gods. Key to the Tomb of the Apocalypse. And G1deon has 0 idea about it and he just thinks she's the product of a hatesex affair he wants to keep under wraps because his colleagues can't be trusted around babies and John will never let the Wake thing go.

Then when G1deon decides he has Questions for John it turns into one of those slapstick comedies where 2 single guys accidentally acquire a baby except it's the galaxy's deadliest killer, a pathetic god with abandonment issues, and Pyrrha who shows up every once in a while and nobody knows she's there except for the toddler

thinking abt the subtle yet overwhelming body horror and dysphoria present in Nona the Ninth. I’m not even talking about Ianthe piloting around Naberius’s corpse or Kiriona’s whole. thing.

it’s the subtler shit. imagine you’re Pyrrha. you’re lying awake in bed on a doomed wasteland of a planet and you’re in your dead best friend’s body. in the next room is a kid, and you have no idea who she actually is. she eats pencils and she’s physically weak but when she’s mad she will break her own bones over and over just to communicate her rage. you kind of have feelings for two people living in the same body, and that very situation is killing that very body. You shave your dead best friend’s face every day. You will never have your own body back.

Don’t worry, kiddie, I’ll keep loving you — my problem is I don’t know how to stop.

I've finished Nona the Ninth. Cried like a little bitch thank you. The people in this book just loved each other, strangely, deeply, truly, and I liked the first two books but this one made my heart flutter <3

[I can't stop thinking about how this was the first time that Harrow's body knew... genuine parental/friendly affection? Holding hands and hugs and braiding hair and dancing and forehead kisses. The body smiled and giggled freely. It pains me that Harrow was not in the body at all to feel it, but... You can't take loved away]

This is the most beautiful thing I have seen in such a long time. Everything about it is so perfect, I can't explain. I am crying instead. Nona, you may never know how much I love you, but if you were to see this I hope you could see in it how much OP loves you, and from that guess at the feelings of the world in general.
