Reddit Migration - Tumblr Posts
twitter users come in! we're completely fine and sane we promissssssse š.
reddit users welcome. the pit is over there have fund.

Well, well, well look who came running back
You gotta love that Tumblr is on the rise because of Twitter and Reddit going down, and not because Tumblr has actually done anything to really improve its website.
I personally kin with a website that accidentally and coincidentally fails upwards.
The site that wins simply by remaining upright.
We are literally this meme, posted eons ago, in our ancient texts.

to all of the reddit refugees who have just arrived: welcome! we here at the tumblr community are always at the very most 2 minutes away from full on nuclear power plant explosion (or at least the online equivalent of that) and we scream and complain too much and the rest of the internet thinks we're dead but we're alive asf mind you, we just like to make it seem that way to keep (most of) the toxic ones out. if you abide by the rules and not be an ass then by all means, welcome! if not, š šŖ. door is thataway.

welcome reddit refugees
This is so.... poetic? romantic? One or the other. I love it
I honestly think that the migration to tumblr thing honestly has some really neat stuff. Like imagine that tumblr is that one guy who was never expected to do anything out of high-school. They got their lives together enough to lead a basic life on a farm. But then the apocalypse hits. It doesn't mean much to tumblr, their barely bothered, but they suddenly have refugees on their doorstep. Tumblr was bullied by Twitter in high-school and hates them accordingly but still refuses to abandon them. Meanwhile Reddit was supposed to be our high-school sweetheart but we ended up having a super bad break up. We can both respect the good times and we let then in as well. (Lovers to enemies to lovers anyone?)
Yup! Have a great time here! Spam your blog if you want, break into other people's blogs and like+reblog+follow all their posts if you want!
Just block unpleasant content+people. No hard feelings!
im seriously surprised at how cozy and welcoming tumblr feels compared to other websites holy shit. its like, are you telling me i dont have to see dumb ppl picking up fights over the dumbest shit possible and trying to ratio each other or trying to get easy karma every day? are you telling me i can actually have dumb fun on social media and post about stuff i like?????
Very Brief Guide to [tumblr], for Reddit refugees
Shit You Must Do Right Fucking Now:
Change your profile picture, blog header, and title to something other than the defaults. Do it right now. You will be mistaken for a bot otherwise, and blocked.
Go into Settings -> Dashboard, scroll down to Preferences, and turn off the options in the picture. This will get rid of most of the algorithmic stuff.

Turn off Tumblr Live. You have to snooze it once every 7 days for some stupid reason. It's hosted through another company and will steal your data if you use it.
Go to your blog settings (under the little person menu) and turn off these two settings:
![Very Brief Guide To [tumblr], For Reddit Refugees](https://64.media.tumblr.com/98070812c2860855a9e99a92a4fb6818/757aee1786490958-d1/s500x750/96ffbdc6a7ea196ab3c688102699be405a94e665.png)
Turn off infinite scroll (lags the site) and turn on timestamps on posts, in the same menu as Preferences.
Basic Features of the Site:
Reblogs drive the entire site. If you'd upvote something on Reddit, you'd reblog it on Tumblr. You can add text, images, or tags to a reblog, but you're not required to.
The dashboard is the equivalent to your Reddit feed, and contains the posts of all the people you follow, with the newest at the top
You can send an ask to someone, and it'll appear in their askbox for them to answer. You can receive them too, or turn off the settings if you don't want.
Tags aren't actually used for finding stuff (search function is dogshit), but are more for categorizing. People also talk in tags. Because Tumblr is weird, you can't use quotation marks (") or commas in them without fucking it up
You can filter both tags and phrases under Account Settings; doing this will put a filter over a post that contains them, which you'll have to click through to see the post itself. Useful for avoiding hate speech or blocking out annoying stuff
![Very Brief Guide To [tumblr], For Reddit Refugees](https://64.media.tumblr.com/48ef6c4495856df63a00fa76cedecb36/757aee1786490958-4b/s500x750/1261d117fe331055841780a8c5493859f213c83f.png)
You can make polls in posts. Here's one now.
Likes are useless. They literally do fuck-all except send a notification to the OP.
Stuff Tumblr Does That Other Sites Don't:
Very old posts (I'm talking from like 2012) often circulate on this site. There's no such thing as a post being "too old" to reblog
Blocking is highly encouraged; you can block someone for any reason. Even for just being annoying.
If you and someone else are following each other, you are mutuals. Mutuals are fucking awesome and are treasured like friends. Mutuals are a thing on other sites but Tumblr treats em differently.
You can screenshot someone's tags if you like them and add them to a reblog. This is called "peer review"
Sometimes someone will find a blog and go through it and like/reblog a bunch of posts. This is totally fine and not "creepy" like it is seen as on other sites.
Tumblr jokes often rely on Continuing The Bit and a "yes, and?" attitude. Goncharov is probably the best example of this.
We are fucking infested with bots. They will either have totally blank profiles or be filled with porn. Block and report on sight.
Censorship is pretty lax here. I can say "I want to brutally stab Elon Musk to death and watch him bleed out in front of a crowd" and nobody gives a shit.
General Etiquette:
Don't try to do epic clapbacks here, you'll probably just get laughed at or blocked. If someone is bugging you or spouting bigoted bullshit, block them.
Reblog art!!! Artists often struggle to gain traction on here; reblogging will give them a boost.
Not every reblog needs a comment or tag in it
You can go all out with tagging your stuff to organize it, or you can just leave it all blank. Someone might ask "hey, can you tag these posts as [x]?" and you can decide if you want to do that or not. It's generally polite to oblige, but "no" is still reasonable.
Avoid discourse like the plague. Filter it, block people who start it, scroll past it when you see it. Just don't get involved in it. Ever.
Don't put fandom tags or jokes on someone's posts about serious matters or personal shit
You're responsible for curating your own dashboard; if you complain about constantly seeing stuff you don't like, that's probably on you. Don't be afraid to unfollow.
Follower count doesn't matter much here and you don't have to make yours known if you don't want to.
Reblog, don't repost. Reblogging keeps the credit and doesn't "steal" engagement like Twitter retweets.
If someone likes something a LOT, they might reblog it like 30 times in a row. This is normal
Having a post blow up is actually kinda a bad thing, since it floods your notifications. There's a sort of in-joke about how having a big post is awful and people jokingly try to stop their own posts from blowing up, often in vain.
Tips:
Get XKit Rewritten if you're on desktop, it's a really helpful extension
In the little drop-down menu next to the 'Post now' button you can either save a draft, schedule a post, or add it to your queue. The queue lets you post things in order at a certain interval, which you can change. It's good for spreading stuff out over time.
You can use Shift+R to quickly reblog stuff and Shift+Q to queue!
Filter your notifications under Activity - you can also see some neat graphs
Find each other! If you want your old Reddit communities to stick together, seek out other refugees and follow them.
Have fun on [tumblr], everyone!
the r/curatedtumblr -> tumblr migration is so funny to me. it's like going to the zoo and enjoying it so much you climb into the enclosure to live with the monkeys

Have fun on [tumblr], everyone!
Iām so fucking hurt. Iāve been active on Reddit for 5 years until a month or so before the strike. At which point I was already kind of burned out on social media, so my sub and I went dark. I turned the sub back on a week or so later, but I stayed offline.
I just went to message some friends Iāve talked to there for YEARS and thatās when I learned. Reddit, of course, has deleted everyoneās chat history. I only remember two of their usernames. I may never talk to some of them again and I cared for them for years.
I searched online what happened because I thought it was a user error, but learned that not only were my chats gone for some bullshit, arbitrary reason, but also the coin/award system is dead. Additionally? Everything is GONE. All the art awards I BOUGHT MYSELF to give to my members who made art in competitions I made for them are gone. Itās like they never won anything. All the awards Iād been given for my poems and art? Gone.
Why do these fuckers need to take away years of the, for lack of a better word, culture that was formed there? Reddit was a wonderful source of information and play for me. Now itās so lifeless. If I didnāt still have a sub to mod, Iād be gone so fast.

Fun little art things Iāve done this year!!
First is a print I did, pattern by yours truly. I had to simplify it cause I only had 3 layers to work with but itās still a vibe!
Second was for a friends shirt, i love drawing eyes, theyāre neat and super good if u wanna mess with colours :))
Last is a wacky self portrait with a few sonas, mostly homestuck but there is also my ENAsona!
N e wayz, havenāt been on Tumblr for too long but best of luck to those coming from Reddit. It can be weird but once youāve spent some time here itās genuinely hella fun!!
-Pebble ;33
funniest thing about the āreddit migrationā is that I havenāt seen a single post shitting on anyone coming from Reddit. when twitter started bleeding users everyone was firing rent-lowering posts but with redditors skittering about weāve left the doors open and put out food bowls
Getting used to Tumblr is so hard because I literally never interact or follow anything on any other social media. I only follow my irl friends on Instagram or subscribe to like 5 YouTube channels and I just search for the rest of the things I watch. So migrating to a site which in all other aspects is wonderful but is also so heavily based on users interacting with the content by reposting is difficult with my current habits.
Hey everyone, just a small thing (Especially for those coming from reddit)
Make sure to change your name, icon and banner! Bots are very frequent on this website and they often don't have these things! I want to block bots, but I also don't want you to miss out on my stuff because I assumed you were a bot. Make sure to give yourself an icon and name, even if you don't change the banner. Your icon and name are so important when it comes to telling you apart from a bot! Thanks!
If we want to introduce Reddit users to Tumblr, they need independence and pressure to properly integrate into the environment. Therefore, I volunteer to fill the role of hunting and attacking migrating redditors to breed a proper ecological heirarchy.
Reddit usersā you are welcome here.
A few things you should know: Tumblr doesnāt care about karma or popularity or whatever. Post whatever you want. If all you care about is being seen, youāre in the wrong place. Also, curate your feed with following and somewhat with tags, but tags can also be used for conversations, quips, witty one liners, and additional commentary. Reblogging is important, calm down on the angry discourse, andā¦ just dive in, guys, cāmon, as long as youāre not mean weāre not gonna bully you out or anything.
Tumblr usersā PLAY NICE. I know we joke about how we use a hellsite, but Reddit really is a minefield. You canāt say anything without someone screaming at you about it and everything is extremely organized into subreddits, no one cares about the people or follows anyone really, and they never use their reblog-adjacent feature. Theyāre gonna be confused. They might mess up. They wonāt understand our inside jokes yet. They probably think weāre still like we were in 2012. Give them time and kindness. Hellsite is a safe space.
Some helpful tumblr jargon/references for our new friends:

Blorbo is a word you might hear a lot. Idk who uses this outside of tumblr, I know some people do, so Iām just gonna leave the urban dictionary definition here and move along.

Again, I think Spiders Georg is pretty well known, but Iām leaving this here anyways because itās referenced fairly often in the way that the āfree real estateā used to be where the guyās face would just be slapped down somewhere out of context with no words and weād all know.

Miette isā¦ everything. We have all agreed that cats are little Victorian children. Miette is referenced often too, soā¦ love her.

Ea-Nasir is the weirdest one, and the one it took me the longest to figure out. This is the transcript of a 3800 year old complaint tablet in cuneiform about Ea-Nasir the terrible copper salesman. This is the oldest recorded customer complaint in the world. People quote this one often without directly stating what it is, so if you didnāt know about it, you may not even realize thereās a reference there, or youād skate on by and ignore it. Itās much funnier when you know the context, soā¦ youāre welcome.
If you have any tumblr questions, ask me, and Iāll answer the best I can. Donāt be scared to ask. Youāre welcome here. Hellsite is for everyone.
Simple. Horse,

Plus plinko,

Equals horse plinko

(No, I donāt know where this came from either, itās justā¦ a thing. I think it might be like vanilla extract or similar things where people just kept sending this one random thing because it was funnier every time for no reason.)
Now that my mind is on itā¦

For those who donāt know, Tumblr Polls were introduced very recently. One of the first big polls that existed was āletās bake a cake,ā with a whole bunch of ingredients representing the percentage of the total in the cake. Vanilla extract ended up with around 50%. Needless to say, you canāt make a cake thats 50% vanilla extract. Of course, Tumblr disagreed, and many polls after that were consumed with vanilla extract. We all justā¦ couldnāt help but click whenever we saw it. That was a large percentage of the platform for a whileā¦ heck, Iām just excited to be able to share something I actually lived through!
Another one I missed is color theory. Artistically speaking, thatās determining which colors work well together to create the most aesthetically pleasing piece. Tumblr-ly speakingā¦ itās the abstract red paths painted in a childrenās hospital. Someone attached a color theory chart and pointed out that āred has more positive than negative meaningsā and everyone immediately fired back with sure, but it still looks like blood. This argument continued for a while. Iāll attach the original image down below so you can see, itās not just an unfair mistreatment of the color red, it really does look like blood; also, a small taste of that argument.
Anyways, thatās all I have for now. Iāll let yāall know if I remember any more.

(Reblogging this because this is the post that finally inspired me to go searching)
Iāve been seeing the tag r/196 a lot from Reddit refugees and such, so being a former redditor myself (I stopped using the platform very much before it crashed and burned) I looked into it.
Itās a subreddit where the only rule is if you show up, you have to post something before you leave. The top posts of all time are incredible Reddit contentā the third top is a condom full of spaghetti, the fourth is ālike if you genuinely fucking despise this website,ā and five and six seem to be back to back posts by the same guy, no idea how far apart time-wise they were posted, with five second videos of pilots captioned āgo fuck that guyās momā and āroger, on my way to fuck that guyās mom.ā The āhotā posts truly made my heart ache for this community, because it was a whole lot of āfor old timeās sakeā and āone last one before this place closes downā and such. It locked around 20 days ago.
Let me be clear: overall, tumblr is much better than Reddit, and all you 196ers will be much happier and safer here, especially since we all sort of follow that rule here anyways. However, for all the bashing weāve done on Reddit and redditors, which we were correct to do about political subreddits and the horrible trolls and people just using it as a place to make personal attacksā¦ Reddit had a lot of really good communities on it. Strong, personal, intimate, loving communities, like little villages except you could be in more than one, and it was truly special beautiful, and itās being lost because the idiots controlling it couldnāt get themselves together and thought they were calling a bluff that just wasnāt a bluff at all.
I will not regret Redditās death. I will not wish for its revival. But I will mourn it. I will mourn with you, r/196, and I will argue with you about columns or whatever it is yāall did there. Iād love for yāall to tell me stories or fill me in on inside jokes or bits, because I love the little Reddit communities and I yearn to know everything I can about this beautiful piece of art which is being lost to time.
I cannot say it enough: redditors, TUMBLR WELCOMES YOU.
man this place seems like a really good alternative to Twitter and Reddit for real. I'm beginning to love this place. And some people even recognise me here :3
Still gonna stay on the sinking ships tho, until we finally hit rock bottom
I almost never posted when I used reddit. I left comments maybe once every few weeks. But here on Tumblr I feel like I need to be posting something. I know I don't really, but I've got 5 followers for some reason. I have a responsibility now. I wasn't ready to have kids, but here they are, all 5 of them, and I need to keep them fed. Here, my children, have a meager text post.
I am rewarded for my efforts with a little pop up that says some people reblogged my post. Once again, I cannot imagine why they would do that, but here we are. Back in the reddit lands, there were no tantalizing little notifications for upvotes. There was a little ticker for people to click, but that's passive. I got over a thousand upvotes once and I said "neat." But here on Tumblr, these interactions are active. If I get reblogged, it's not just a passing bit of reassurance. It's someone actually taking the garbage I just spewed out and sticking it up on the fridge for everyone to see.
I'm up on the fridges of like 10 strangers. And I want more.
