In the past, Zhongli never would have thought heโd get to have this experience throughout all his time walking the lands of Teyvat. Of his past sins but also merits, he thought nothing could truly be novel to him anymore.
Until he fell in love with you, and the life he got to now have with you after giving away his Gnosis. And if he had to do it all over again or was offered a return to his archon days, heโd unwaveringly decline. As nothing would amount to being your lover and now, your husband. Where his first priority above everything else was you.
Like currently, as Zhongli returned home from his work. Done with meetings with clients, filling paperwork, or Hu Taoโs antics. He gets to come to a home shared with you, where the lights are already on and the kitchen being used for dinner to be served.
And while this doesnโt happen every day, your routines changing once in a while where your schedules donโt always align in your different jobs. It doesnโt diminish the fluttering and swelling feeling in the former archonโs chest when he gets to have you like this. Something so sweetly intimate and domestic, a word heโs now grown quite acquainted with. For a dragon, this was his nest, a cave where the most precious things he kept safe were here, such as your shared moments together.
โWelcome home, Li!โ you smile serenely at him as you turn around from attending the working stove.
โHello, my love.โ Zhongliโs gold eyes soften as a gentle smile of his own reaches his lips.
Especially when you meet him once he enters the kitchen, wrapping your arms together in an embrace. Pressing your head against his chest, hearing his heartbeat despite his layers of clothes, your husband lays a kiss to your head. A light sound of a purr rumbled from him, leaving a tiny giggle to escape you at the sound. You can just imagine his hybrid formโs tail swaying around as he does so as he hugged your waist.
โHungry yet?โ you ask as you turn to look up at him, but not pulling away. โDinner is almost ready.โ
โYes, I am.โ he nods. โYour cooking smells as lovely as ever.โ
A light blush spreads across your cheeks at his compliment. A man of words, your husband was, and how skilled he was at it when praising you to the sky. Your habit of being flustered by his attention like a new bride never faded. Something Zhongli found incredibly endearing.
Moving on your tiptoes, you kiss his chin, earning a chuckle from him. Raising his hand to cup your cheek, bringing you forward to properly kiss you. Slowly moving your lips together in sync, the action was sensual and all consuming. It took a few minutes for you to break apart. Admiring each other from close proximity.
โI could never miss out any chance to dine with my wife, after all.โ says Zhongli as he grasps your left hand to lay another kiss to your knuckles. Where your wedding and engagement rings were worn. A beautiful gem of Cor Lapis shining under the lights, matching the color of your husbandโs affectionate gaze. His left thumb rubbing the backs of your fingers as his own ring twinkled.
โOkay, Iโll let you wash up then.โ you reply, giving him another squeeze in your hug before turning back to the meal youโve been preparing.
โThough, beloved,โ Zhongli says as he sheds his blazer off, keeping his wedding ring his bare skin after taking his gloves and thumb rings off.
โHmm?โ you tilt your head back to him, listening in curiosity.
โPlease do keep some room for desert. I would like to have it later.โ
Your face emitted a dark red flush, heart fluttering at the look on Zhongliโs face as he eyes you with intensity. Like a beast watching his prey, yet an admirer appreciating an artwork.
Gold irises glowed as he stared back up from observing your body to your visage, his left hand on his chin, the right supporting it with it crossed over his chest. A smirk now dawning his face. Playful, sultry.
โOhโฆโ you thought, knees almost trembling. This was definitely going to become a long night.

Oh, I have seen some works on this theme! From what I understand and have read, while Iโm no expert(sorry, I know Iโm rambling): specifically, Fenghuangs are mythological birds of Chinese mythology, also interpreted from other eastern cultures, do symbolize the union of yin and yang. They also tend to be considered one and the same as Phoenixes, which blur a lot of what separates between them. The two birds are both thought to contend to the same status as the dragon. Hence, they are portrayed to be perfect pair.
Representations and symbolisms vary about either bird. Fenghuang can be interpreted to represent yin and yang by itself instead of having another being as the other half. The Phoenix is mostly regarded with rebirth than the Fenghuang.
The name, Fenghuang, is a combination of names from Feng(male/yang) and Huang(female/yin), the symbol of yin and yang. But later on the Fenghuang would symbolize femininity while the dragon represents masculinity. The bird(fenghuang/phoenix) and the dragon generally represented the harmonious union of husband and wife, depicted at weddings and royalty.
When I first learnt about it when reading some Zhongli stories with this premise, I was really fascinated and liked the idea a lot. But it honestly slipped past me to try it until you came, Anon! Iโd love to write it! I just need to think of a plot. So I hope you donโt mind being patient with me while I figure it out.

The field was littered with bodies and discarded weapons; the stench of blood billowed and blew all around through the blades of grass that swayed in the gusts of wind. It was disgusting, grotesque as the new colors of the once green and colorful field became steel and crimson. Trees laid broken in half from the massive strength of the stampede of the armies that galloped the whole place to the ground. Alas, over the centuries of life, Zhongli did not find that disturbing anymore, but in any other circumstances he wouldn't be as panicked as he was now. One person was missing, and he couldn't find her among the living. He wanted to scream his head off with your name on his lips but his throat closed tight and he hardly breathed as he ran through the field, looking over the many faces of the dead, twisted and gray. He ran like never before, his mind running ahead of his movements as he tried remembering if he ever even saw you after the battle began, he wished this was some cruel joke and that you were in the medical wing- a hand suddenly sprouted from the ground and grabbed him by the ankle.
Zhongli stumbles but catches himself, and before even he knows it, his spear digs itself into the head of the person; crunch of bones and squish of the man's insides go flying by Zhongli's ears as his eyes stare widely at the corpse. For a moment your face flashes before his eyes, thinking he had accidentally struck you, but he breathes a silent sigh of relief before another sound reaches his ears. This time he's frozen. Like a battle horn that had sung the death song today, your silent, pain filled moan of his name howls into his eardrum as if you were screaming. He has no time to even pull his spear away before he's spinning to the direction the sound came from- and there he sees you. Your limp body laying among the dead, barely moving, your back turned to him but you knew- you knew the feel of his presence, the smell he carried with him, you knew him.
His weight dropped beside you, and it was like he suddenly turned limp himself, as his eyes glued themselves on the awfully large gash below your ribs, metal shards and a blade sticking from it. Your hands were clutching on it previously, as evident by the cuts on your fingers. Zhongli's breath hitched, but his mind seemed to clear suddenly, an awful and scary realization dawned on him. The calm he found himself in was terrifying. His arms folded underneath you, and as if you were made of the most fragile glass, he brought you into his lap.
"Y/n.. darling.." he called softly, seeing how your lashes barely fluttered, how your eyes stared aimlessly, your pupils blown and tired.
"Zh... Zhongli.." it was death's whisper on your lips, words you managed to get out with the little breath you had in your damaged lungs. The taste of copper and iron stung your tongue and swallowing made it further worse, the sting in your body made it hard to do even the simplest thing as breathing; it was then when you realized your legs had gone completely numb. You could feel nothing but the biting cold.
"What happened to you my dear..? Hey... speak to.. me" he spoke, yet his voice seemed to stammer with the tightness of his throat, almost broken with sadness he felt take hold of his heart. His hand cupped beneath your cheek and his thumb tried to wipe away all the blood that bubbled and poured out of your mouth.
"I don't-.. i don... want to die.." you croaked out suddenly, voice breaking like his heart as you found strength to take hold of his hand. "Please..."
He held you closer, sharing all the warmth he could offer, arm wrapping around you and bringing you further into him. As your figure shivered he tucked your head beneath the crevice of his shoulder and neck. Your pleas echoed in his head, bringing tightness to his chest.
"Hush now... It will be alright. Just stay calm, the healers are already on their way.." he hushed softly to you as his tears threatened to spill with the lie he told. He knew no healers was close by, and he knew even if they were close that no one would be able to save you, not even a god would be... his heart was shattering at your sad flicker of a smile.
"I'll stay here with you, just relax...don't strain yourself" he said as he caressed your cheek. The hairs at the back of his neck rose at their ends at the way you stared through him, even if your eyes searched for him they didn't seem to find him. More rivulets of blood poured down your chin.
"Please... don't let.." he nodded swiftly, holding your head close to his chest as he knew you liked. Remembering all the time you had placed your head over his heart to listen to the steady rhythm he never seemed to lose. Only difference was that you carried your own steady rhythm back then, your own warmth and happiness and hope.
Celestia, he wanted to weep with you. But he didn't dare make your last moments more sorrowful than they already were.
"I will not. I'm staying right here.. How about I tell you a story while we wait..hm?" he felt you weakly nod, eagerly so, and he tried to get his throat to let him breathe, his adam's apple bobbing with anxiety he attempted to refuse to feel.
"I never told you about this story.. It is about a man; who was quite different from the standards his residency had written out. He didn't like change much and did everything to keep things running smoothly, his heart laid where his business and career were, duty and work were his girl and wife. He became rejected from the others due to this, as he grew quite detached.. yet there was reasoning to all his hard work, my dear. All the time he spent building his work, all the countless hours he had spent working were so his beloved could be happy.. a girl he had met not too long ago- you hear?- he.. he fell for her. Like a meteor from the sky.. He loved her so much. He loved her like the oceans loved the moon, and the way flowers loved the sun. And he would have done everything to see her smile and laugh, to see her safe and looked after-"
Your skin felt cold beneath his fingertips, and your eyes were fixated on his face suddenly. His thumb continued to caress your cheek, the softest of smiles stretched on his face. No.
No-
"-and he had her for a while. Those times were the happiest moments the man had ever lived through. He never wanted to leave them. He never did. The woman was so kind to him, so sweet and gentle and she knew all his weakest and softest spots, and she was the person he could rely on with even his darkest secrets he had kept buried for years long. He loved her, my dear, do you hear me..?"
No...
Your breathing had stopped with a shudder, your body becoming even heavier in his arms.
"He did everything for her, everything to see her smile- Oh, how he loved her smile..... Before that, before he met her, no one loved him. But with her, he knew- he was loved, she loved him like he loved her and more...Yet.. soon came fate, knocking on the door of their happy lives, and it took her away. The woman he loved so much so, even more than his duty and work. Fate took her away.... it took her away.. you hear..? they...took you away, my darling-" his tears finally spilled from his eyes, and he doubled over your body that had gone cold minutes ago.
Zhongli would have done anything to turn back time, and be with you again. To feel your warmth, see your smile, hear your laugh and to feel your lips on his. But like the ocean can't have the moon, he couldn't reach you anymore - no matter how much he wanted to.

Zhongli:
ย ย The former Geo Archon is a very patient man. After centuries of experience, he knows within himself when to take a break. However, the physical exhaustion of a mortal body was something he was not quite used to yet. His office basked in a warm orange as the sun sets over Liyue, and Zhongli exhales softly through his nose. The pen in his hand scribbles away at the documents left by Hu Tao, but his mind was elsewhere.ย
ย ย Tiredness ached within his joints, and he sets the quill down to flex his fingers. Heโs not one to complain; he was grateful for his job at the funeral parlor, and he wasnโt about to draw attention to a measly setback such as this.
ย ย As Zhongli gains the motivation to start again, an agonizing pulse shoots through his palm. A hiss escapes through his teeth and the pen clatters to the floor. He barely registers the pull on his pants leg as he gathers himself. His amber orbs trace over the face below him, two (e/c) doe-like eyes watching him with curiosity.ย
ย ย โWhat are you doing down there, little one?โ Zhongliโs voice rumbles as a soft smile graces his features. The child quickly lifts the writing utensil he dropped moments before and giggles.
ย ย โWrite!โ They exclaim.
ย ย โYes. That is used for writing,โ the consultant replies as he lifts the young being onto his lap. Taking an empty copy of paper, he places it on the table in front of the child, who immediately scribbles away at the white sheet. Zhongli couldnโt help but to place his hand on top of theirs, stopping any erratic movement of the pencil. They look at him, their cheeks puffed out in irritation.
ย ย โWrite!โ They announce sternly, making the Archon chuckle.
ย ย โLet me teach you how I do it.โ

Kokomi:
ย ย Her Excellency of Watasumi Island is a very busy lady. With all her time spent on finding ways for Sangonomiya to grow, she tends to forget about her own needs. With the villagers finding new ways to cultivate the land; to the daily tasks needed to be sent out to the soldiers; to the duties at the shrine; the lead priestess was tired to say the least.
ย ย She knew a few hours with her books would do her some good. She asked General Gorou to keep an eye out while she rejuvenated herself with new tactic plans. She sat contently in her own company, eyes gazing across the words printed on the page. She was truly invested in the plot, theories and questions dancing in her thoughts. The suspense was killing her as the scene unravels, and though she was quite immersed, the sudden laugh from under the table confused her.
ย ย Kokomi tilts her chair back to peek beneath the desk, and a relieved sigh retreats from the priestess. โWhy, if it isnโt little (Y/n). How did you find this place?โ She questions as the child climbs up her legs and into her lap.
ย ย โEasy peasy,โ They exclaim, โI found your tree!โ
ย ย โI see,โ Kokomi coughs out in response to their boisterous personality, โso you found my reading spot?โ
ย ย โYou can read books?โ (Y/n) mumbles, a sudden glumness falling on their face.
ย ย โI canโฆ you cannot?โ
ย ย โI can, Iโm just not very good at it. I bet youโre a pro at reading! Youโre good at lots of things, Miss Kokomi!โ
ย ย โYouโd be surprised,โ She says with a small smile, โHow about this: you read me a chapter, and I read you one.โ
ย ย โYouโre going to read to me?โ
ย ย โIf you read to me. Itโs only fair, and besides, how will you get better if you donโt practice?โ
